What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: A Disney Movie Marathon

Have you guys seen that NY Times article about a family that learned to communicate with their autistic son Owen through Disney movies? If not, GO READ IT. Best thing I've seen online in ages.

And in the spirit of that sweet story, I bring you... THE SUNDAY SWEETS DISNEY MOVIE MARATHON!!

Let's kick it off with a few classics, shall we?

(By CW reader Brittnee W., who's in culinary school!)

Cinderella's helpers really did have great taste; her original pink dress just doesn't get enough love these days, which is why I especially love this cake! The trailing "threads" and blue beads are a great touch.

And who here remembers the Aristocats?

(By Zucchero e Polvere di Stelle)

Ok, I admit it: I honestly don't remember ever watching this movie. o.0 I wonder if it's on Netflix? Anyhoo, regardless, these characters look like collectible porcelain statues - and that bridge on the bottom tier? AMAZING.

Here's a newer classic, and a personal favorite:

(By Richard's Cakes)

Tangled!

Take a sec to really look at all those details, guys. The little bunnies! The moss on the stones! The individual shingles! I've got a dream, and it involves that tower under a big glass dome on my desk.

This next cake's badness level is at ZERO:

(By Le Pazze Torte di Titty)

Yep, any alien experiment bringing me a cupcake is A-Ok in my book.
(Also digging Stitch's lil' nose wrinkle.)

Timon and Pumba, on the other hand, have a slightly more questionable offering:

(By Cake Central User Yummy-Mummy Cake Creations)

Bug cake? Gee, guys, you shouldn't have.

Another classic movie, paired some truly ingenious cake design:

(By Atelié Kero Bolo)
(And thanks to @EchoGalfas for helping me track down the world's most elusive cake!)

Can we talk about that globe encircling the apple? And the evil witch sculpted over the glass? GENIUS, I tell you. And that's not even mentioning the hand-painted cottage, or the 3D sculpted Dwarves nestled in roses!

That's a tough act to follow, but I think this Frozen beauty just might manage:

(by Pasteleria Dolci. See this cake on their Facebook page)

At what point does your brain just short-out from the staggering amount of talent in these cakes? 'Cuz mine's long gone, and we still have four more cakes to go!

When John and I visited Disneyland, one of my favorite parts of the park was the giant whale's mouth you sail through during the Storybook Land Canal Boats. It's based on Monstro from Pinocchio, of course, but I never thought I'd see him in cake form!

(By Le Torte di Anny)

As impressive as Monsto is, I've gotta point out those waves, too. Frothy perfection.

For obvious reasons, I have a certain... affinity... with Ralph here:

(By The Royal Bakery)

Nice to see he hasn't wrecked this cake, though!

(Though you must admit, a Wreck-It-Ralph Cake Wreck would be deliciously ironic.)

I'm going to end with two movies that were big players in that article I mentioned - movies that first showed Owen's family just how strongly he resonated with these characters.

First, the queen of Poor Unfortunate Souls herself:

(By Christian Giardina)

Took me a second to spot them, but Flotsam and Jetsam are in there, too!

And finally, I couldn't find an Iago cake to feature, so instead, here's the most jaw-dropping Aladdin masterpiece I have ever seen:

(By Artcake)

And for all I know, Iago IS in there; there are so many tiny details, I'm still finding new things to look at!

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm seriously jonesing for some Disney movies now. That, and cake, of course. ;) Hope you guys have a great Sunday!

P.S. - There are so many great Disney cakes out there that I already have a second movie marathon post in the works - so if you have a Sweet to nominate, feel free to share your links in the comments or over on the Cake Wrecks Facebook page!

The Wreck-It Ralph cake is wonderful...especially considering that there is a Wreck-It Ralph cake in the movie. I kind of expected this cake to match it identically...although I'm not complaining.

Aristocats was MY Disney Movie the one that I remember being new and not having to "take someone younger too see" so I didnt look like a baby. 1970 when I was ten years old....Its great fun and the songs are brilliant! its a sort of re-make of Lady and the Tramp but with felines...fabulous cast and such fun! The kittens are just adorable and Duchess and O'Malley are a cute couple.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

I love all these cakes! And by the way, The Aristocats is on Netflix. :) The amount of talent in these cakes are astounding!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

These cakes are all stunning, but it was the autism article that moved me the most. Thanks for both.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

My all-time favorite is Disney's "Fantasia". The original, 1940 version. I saw it for the first time when I was about 5 or 6. Absolutely spellbinding!! I really think that seeing that movie kick-started my love of music (especially classical music). I recommend it to everyone, of any age! (A cake based on that movie would have to have LOTS of tiers!!!)
=^~.~^=

Having zero artistic talent myself, I am in awe of people who can make such masterpieces. On every cake, the thing I most admire is how they craft the faces to express such emotion. Fantastic.

And the story about the family is inspiring. Thank you for including it.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

Okay, everybody pick one of the cakes above.
Take a picture and bring it to you're local bakery.
Give them $75.00 and ask them to make a cake using your picture as inspiration.
Take a picture of the resulting cake and send it to Jen.
She'll have enough material to fill posts until August!
I call the Tangled cake as inspiration for a CCC!!!

My first Disney movie in the theaters was Bambi. My favorite cake in this series would be the Snow White cake, simply amazing!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterShelly

I did read the article when it was in the paper. Wonderful story and now I'm waiting on the book's release to read more. These cake are amazing! Been a long time Disney fan. No way would I be able to cut into these. I also would display them under glass. :)

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLynn R

"The Aristocats" is one of my favorites. It IS on Netflix -- I really think you should see it.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDorothy

These cakes are simply stunning - true works of art indeed.

I would like to make a suggestion to the Cakewrecks team - how about including the prices of these masterpieces? I think it would be very enlightening to your readers to see just how much money these cakes are worth.

Just a thought. :)

You MUST watch the Aristocats-it was my now 19 year old son's favourite for a year. Loved the music

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

No awesome St. Patrick's Day cakes? :(

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJean

Beautiful cakes even more beautiful story. Can't keep my eyes dry.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterIrismom

Squeee :D

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

So apparently @Sharyn isn't the only one that can get songs stuck in my head. I can tell you now that Ursula singing the Aristocats song really doesn't work. O.o

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Monstro scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid and I can't watch Pinocchio to this day, but that cake is super adorable. But my fave has to be the Ursula cake. I'm in awe of the talent.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCdnGinger

Gorgeous cakes. My favorite is the last one.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Ditto to Pancakes! above - I'd love to know how expensive some of these cakes are (although I realize that some are made specifically for cake shows). I attended a 2nd birthday party yesterday with an astoundingly beautiful Frozen cake, and I kept thinking what a waste to spend that kind of money on a toddler's birthday cake. Of course, I still totally appreciated the talent and skill it took to create.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermscisluv

It's funny you say that about Cinderella's pink dress, because my daughter LOVES it. More than the ball dress. She keeps asking me for a Cinderella doll with the pink dress, and I'm having trouble finding one.

It's hard to pick a favorite cake, but that Monstro one is so awesome.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTori

Just read the autism/Disney article and bawled me eyes out (but in a good way!). Thanks for leading me to such an amazing story. And of course thanks, as always, for the amazing Sunday Sweets! Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next Disney Sweets post!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPam in FL

Thanks for sharing that article! I keep hoping I will found a similar path to my son's mind someday.

Glad you finally found the source of that Snow White cake!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

I found the Frozen Castle cake maker! Someplace in Mexico called Dolci Pasteleria. Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/dolcipasteleria and there's lots of pictures of their awesome Frozen Castle cake! It was pretty hard to find, but I need these pictures for inspiration... because I'm making a Frozen castle out of cake in April!!!!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKatie Goodpasture

Read this post with my 3yr old daughter who insisted that her next birthday cake be whichever cake we happened to be looking at. She especially loved the Cinderella cake, but then it's pink & she's a major girly girl ( no idea where she gets it, I refused to wear dresses past the age of 4).

I have been a huge Disney fan for as long as I can remember! I recall when "The Little Mermaid" came out it was touted it as an "instant classic". At 18 & having many Disney classics under my belt I was quite skeptical. Then I saw it. Love! I also vividly remember dragging my parents to go see "The Lion King" 'cause I didn't want to go alone. So there I was, 23, with my parents...along with a thousand little kids and their Mommy's & Daddy's and I couldn't have cared less how silly I'm sure I looked! Once that title sequence hit...amazing!

Probably can't name my favorite Disney movie, too many are wonderful in different ways. I do think "Lilo & Stitch" is underrated and never fails to make me laugh. :). I thought "Frozen" was beautiful, music & story a proud addition to the Disney family. But with a 3 yr old & a 7 yr old constantly belting out "Let It Go", this mom needs a break from it. Lol

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMovieMom

My son is autistic and that article made me cry like a baby. His obsession is video games. Thank you so much for sharing it!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLissia

The cakes are amazing today!

Even more amazing it the NYT article.

Loved it. I've shared it and will keep sharing it.

Thanks for the smiles and tears today :)

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaty G

All of the cakes were beautiful. I'm torn between the Snow White cake and the Cinderella cake.

Thank you for sharing that article. I probably wouldn't have found that otherwise, and it definitely made my day. I'm lOoking forward to the release if the book.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSunshyne1922

These cakes are amazing, but I do have the sense that the Ursula cake is pretty close to having a wardrobe malfunction. She is showing quite a bit of side-"fondant."

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Thank you for the article about Owen and his family. My 21-yr-old daughter has autism, and I could relate to much of the story.

Aristocats is a wonderful movie! Please see it as soon as possible.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCJG

I saw "The Aristocats" in the theater as a child. I own it today. It's the "forgotten" Disney movie that few remember. See it. You'll be glad you did.

That being said, I wasn't especially thrilled with today's theme. I love Halloween WAY more than Disney, but your posts are always great, and I love the "Sunday Sweets". As usual, "don't judge a book by it's cover". My brain had shorted-out at Raphunzel, and I scrolled the rest of the cakes slack-jawed in awe.

Please don't EVER stop.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDebbie

@Tori, they're selling a singing Cinderella at the Disney Store right now that wears (an admittedly much less awesome version of) the pink dress. It comes with the rags costume, too, and appears to be roughly the same size as their regular dolls, so you could probably get the blue dress to complete the set. http://www.disneystore.com/cinderella-singing-doll-and-costume-set-11-1/2/mp/1337542/1000259/

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTAL

If a baker was able to accurately reproduce the way the cake in Wreck-It Ralph looked after Ralph smashed it, would it be both a well-done cake to be placed in the Sunday Sweets section, AND also a literal cake wreck?!

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRainbow

I can appreciate what has been done but anyone with any sculpting skill can easily make any one of these cakes. It should really come down to taste and more often than not these cakes taste subpar.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTheMadBaker

The Aristocats is the first movie I remember seeing (I was 3 or 4) -- I loved it so much I had a stuffed toy cat named Marie. They re-released the movie when I was in college and my mom, sister and I went and took a little girl we were babysitting -- I think she was a year old. She stopped crying and became transfixed once the jazz music began playing.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDee

Everyone should go check out the FB page for the bakery that did the "Frozen" cake.... Pasteleria Dolci. They are out of Mexico. Their pictures of past cakes is AMAZING! So many that are true to character and theme. Possibly more "Sunday Wrecks" to come from this site.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNetasha

One of the many things I love about Cakewrecks is that, unlike many blogs and forums, it is not only safe but usually wonderfully enlightening and enjoyable to follow any links or references presented, be it in the main article or the comments. The link to Owen's story is no exception - thank you for including that.

The cakes are beautiful too. =-)

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSeabird

Since I'm a huge Beauty and the Beast fan, I have to be sure you see this one, if you haven't already. One of my faves. :) http://disneycakes.tumblr.com/post/4367071819/beauty-the-beast-by-www-sweetfantasies

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMel

At what point does your brain just short-out from the staggering amount of talent in these cakes?

during all sunday sweets posts, usually right after the second one.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

I'm another Aristocats Fan. The music from that one is the Best. "Everybody Wants to be A Cat"

"We are Siamese" and "You must learn your scales and your Arpeggios" Had the album. Yup.

Cinderella cake is my fave. My heart just fell right on the floor when I looked at that one.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWickedtuff

I'm glad you liked the article, too (I sent it to you via email, but used my other email). The cakes are also amazing!

Coincidentally, I had "Everybody wants to be a cat" going through my head while I made breakfast this morning. It's been years since I've seen Aristocats, but I know I saw it as a kid (along with The Rescuers). I think I had the little book that came with a 45 record, too.

March 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

The amazing Aladdin cake is made by Art Cake.
http://www.artcake.ru/cakes.htm/b1230/

You can find Iago at the back of the cake. :)

I read that article last week and passed it on as something definitely worth reading even if you don't have autistic kids. Absolutely fantastic cakes.

March 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersamatwitch

So many amazing cakes! I saw a Tangled cake at a toy store that I really want to send in, but I have to get pictures that do it justice! Also, it seemed like a lot of these bakeries were Italian. Do Italians have a Disney cake decorating gene?

March 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMeggan

Wickedtuff, "We are Siamese" is from Lady and the Tramp. It kind of fits in Aristocats, though.

March 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

The Aristocats is hands down my all-time favorite disney move. You should watch it when you get a chance. ;)

March 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura I

That article reminded me of the book "Following Ezra". Find it. Read it.

The Aristocats is my all time fav non-fairy tale Disney movie. I highly recommend you watching it. The best kitten is Toulouse!

March 18, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSunKrux

The Aristocats was one of my favorites as a kid. And it is on Netflix! I watched it last week.
