They blamed each other, of course, but at the end of the day the fact remained: their Soccer ball was broken, and neither of them had any limbs.

I volunteer at the local SPCA and have seen that look thousands of times! There are dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. that will wait until their kennels are all nice and clean and then go and "decorate." Gotta love those furbabies!
(As an aside, in the US, SPCAs and Humane Societies are all independent organizations -- there's no American "umbrella"-- so if you donate, please donate locally). :)
I don't see that last one as a "smirk". To me, it looks more like an "Oops! I couldn't HELP it! When you gotta go, youGOTTAGO-and there was no one to let me OUT but you still love me anywayRIGHT? (Just don't eat the "chocolate"...)
So on the first cake: Do you think someone just came along and cut the ball in half AND cut off their limbs? Or are they mad because even though they had no limbs, they could just push the ball around with their noses until someone cut it in half?
And if the ball was cut in half, why didn't it deflate?
As for cake no. 3, I have seen that look on the faces of babies who know you've just put a clean diaper on them, and they GOTTAGO again.
The Far Side posts are my favorite. You have that understated humor down pat.

Hmmmm....judging from the green slime trails near the blob monsters on cake #1, they have the same problem controlling themselves as the yellow ridgeback does.

Whatever the orange blob did to the blue blob had to be unsportsmanlike. Unless the blue guy started out cross-eyed and smeary.
Point of order, J&J (HOJ):
Anyone with cats has ALSO seen that facial expression, although normally associated with a slimy regurgitated hairball or a bloody dead thing, rather than a pile of poo.
I love how the baker of the second cake avoided the it's/its conundrum, but still managed to make two other errors.
They figured out how to break open the piñata, but how do they collect the candy?
I just noticed the other half of the soccer ball is upside-down in the bottom right corner of the first cake. It split in half!

Ahh how I miss the Far Side. And that D.C. cake is hilarious. I can't tell if it says welcome or just gibberish pretending to mean welcome. Ahh the joys of wreckerators lol.
Am I the ony one that think the smirky yellow ridgeback is cute? Could be because i've spent the night with a serial vomiting dog, with serious cuddle need between the gos. the sleep depravaton really messes up my head.

The first cake is based on the Super Nintendo game Spanky's Quest. A monkey had to defeat giant fruits with various sports balls. So to anyone who used to play that game the cake would make sense :)
