What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Disney Wedding Cakes

When you know you'll never be too old for Disney, but still want to keep it elegant:

(By WDW Resorts)

A beautifully subtle design for Lady and the Tramp lovers:

(By WDW Resorts - specifically, The Grand Floridian)

Ever wanted Cinderella's feathered friends to lend YOU a hand?

(By WDW Resorts)

All together now: D'awwww.

This Beauty and the Beast homage has the famous song lyrics handwritten on top:

(By Gimme Some Sugar)

...but the skirt ruffles at the bottom are my favorite. SO GOOD.

Can't decide on a favorite movie? Then why not have all your favorite characters?

(By Story Teller Cakes)

This silhouette style is incredible! I like the unexpected touches of teal.

Or maybe you prefer the classic Cinderella's castle:

(By WDW Resorts, pic by Robert Brown)

Can't go wrong with this "something blue."

But I think you just might love Cindy's carriage even better:

(By WDW Resorts)

WOWIE. The gilded coach is definitely the icing on top, but check out those curves and ruffles! I could stare at those beautiful textures all day.

This next one was inspired by one of my favorite Disney artists, Tim Rogerson:

(By WDW Resorts)

I love the art deco feel. Gorgeous.

And this one was inspired by the design of It's A Small World:

(By WDW Resorts)

Ear worms aside, Small World is one of the most beautiful original rides, and this design captures it perfectly.

FACT: Just about anything related to the lantern scene in Tangled makes me cry:

(By Sweet Fix)

::Sniffle::

And finally, a more light-hearted approach to the classic wedding castle:

(By WDW Resorts)

Now that promises a great big beautiful tomorrow, right there.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I can't see the Small World cake. Refreshed twice with no success. Is it just Safari being jerky?

[Editor's note- I think it was probably Safari but I reuploaded it just in case. Thanks for the heads up! -john (the hubby of Jen)]

PSA: You can order the Cinderella's Castle cake topper (made out of white chocolate!) here: http://www.themescometrue.com/index2.php#/vendorlist/6/

That's what I did for my wedding. The topper comes in pure white, but it looks even more amazing with some frosting added to the tops of the towers. My friend Joy (attorney by day!) made and decorated the cake, and you can see her process (including the unpainted vs. painted cake topper) here: http://thejoysofcaking.blogspot.com/2013/06/going-to-chapel.html

I can't for the life of me figure out how those bluebirds are staying aloft on the Cinderella cake. . . . Anyone?

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

That silhouette cake is really something else! I can hear the wind in the upper layers.

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNahtmmm

WHAT??? How are those bluebirds staying up there, hovering in the air? That cake is impossible!

LOL. Isn't that Elsa with Woody? Kiddo just told me that one is sea, land, sky, space!!

I haven't been able to attribute the Lady and the Tramp cake yet, but I have identified the topper as a Lenox figurine. Does that count against its wonderfulness?

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChris Staffa

4 of those cakes were done by me, black castle, golden coach, Tim Rogerson, ice castle.

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRichard

Lynne - I think that's Elsa on top of the silhouette cake with Woody...

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLinden V

@Lynne: I think that's Elsa's silhouette atop the fifth cake. Does that mean she's marrying Sheriff Woody? Weird.

I know I'lll probably be banned forever from this site for saying so, but Disney has never been my favorite, and I don't really look forward to Sunday Sweets, as I prefer the wrecked cakes.

BUT!!
These are some of the prettiest cakes I've ever seen. The silhouette one with teal, the Lady and the Tramp one, the song lyrics on Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella's castle, and my favorite one, the lantern one from Tangled. I want that in art to hang on the wall.

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBetty Martin

Simply gorgeous!! Love Love love the lighted castle!!

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLisa P

The black and white silhouette cake with teal accents is perfecto. Incredibly original.

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJerry

It's A Small World is my all time favorite Disney ride. I love all of the costumes and characters, the design, even the song. I know lots of people despise the song (and the ride), but it just makes me feel happy! Thanks for including it with all of these gorgeous cakes!!!!!!

I'm going to come to this website in 10+ years when I'm ready to get married just to find a cake.

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJessie

*scraping lower jaw from the floor*

Wow, just WOW!!! These are AMAZING!!!
My favourite is the silhouettes cake. Are there other angles of it? I want to see ALL the characters...

*sigh*

Pretty much ALL of the cakes (with the exception of maybe one or two) were made by Walt Disney World/Disneyland bakers. The Lady & the Tramp cake was definitely made by Walt Disney World (I believe the Grand Floridian Bakery), because our wedding photographers photographed that particular wedding at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Back when I was in the process of planning my Disney wedding...I followed the Disney wedding blog religiously. I've seen nearly all of those cakes either on the Disney website or the Disney blog.

Okay, those birds....???!! Wha----, howw---, ...?? Only thought I had was there's wires in the pink ribbons? Somehow. Wow! Loved all the Cinderella cakes, but especially the white one with the gold carriage. Gorgeous! (I'm one of those who doesn't think her ball gown was blue but white!)

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVioletRose

In answer to Julie who wondered how the birds stay up, perhaps it's pixie dust!

Nice to see a little Disney magic now and again. So cool! Makes me want to dash down to So Cal and visit the park!

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarl C

So pretty! Love the small world one with all the shades of blue and teal. And now I have an ear worm "...it's a world of laughter, a world of tears, it's a world of hope and a world of fears........"

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

Retro Mickey and Minnie....sigh......)sigh(.....))SIGH((

July 3, 2016 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I wish I knew how they did those curved layers on the cake with "Cindy's" carriage on top. Flawless.

July 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMary Kay

I doubt that Lady and the Tramp was taken at Disney's Animal Kingdom. The balcony railing is thoroughly inelegant, unlike any shot I can find of the resort's balconies. The upholstery on the seat is stained. And, the picture seems to have been taken through glass, as there is a bright reflection just to the left of Tramp. I would check with the Floridian; the cake pictured doesn't live up to their usual level of impressiveness, and it has begun to crush on the bottom tier, warping the icing in the middle of the double doors.

July 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterChris Staffa

How can people do such amazing work on cake? I can't come close on paper, much less in icing! Always amazed by the Sunday Sweets (and the wrecks, but in a different way) - but these are over-the-top incredible. Well done, decorators of these cakes. Well done.

July 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

is it just me or does it really bother anyone else that on the silhouette cake, they highlighted Ariel's hair in teal instead of her fish-half.

*triggered*

July 6, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSian

These cakes are amazingly beautiful. I know they will be cut into, it almost seems like a shame to destroy them.

July 9, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBodynsoil
