What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Superb Owl Sunday Sweets

As I'm sure most of you know, it's Super Bowl Sunday. To those of us who aren't fans of sportsball, though, it's Superb Owl Sunday.

Our day has less cheering, sure, but what it lacks in beer and hot wings it more than makes up for with adorable cakes:

Like this!

Or this:

I like how this one uses piped buttercream to mimic the texture of wood grain:

(By You've Been Cupcaked)

Also, baby owl. 'Nuff said.

Here's one that's ALL buttercream - no fondant!

(By White Flower Cake Shoppe)

Just to remind you guys that it CAN be done.

Love the colors on this one:

(By Fat Cakes Design)

Plus the way the branch wraps around the two tiers.

Check out the detail in these feathers:

(By Cake Crumbs)

Ahh-mazing.

Who else needs these owl wedding toppers?

(By Delicut Cakes)

And though it's not necessarily owl-related, I'm digging all the great textures on each tier.

It turns out owls are PERFECT for baby shower cakes:

Right?

I like how this tree adds a 3D element:

Of course, I have to include the world's most magical owl:

(By Delectable Cakes)

Hedwig!!

Who looks surprisingly cute in Harry's glasses.

And finally, a dramatic cutie with wafer paper feathers:

(By The Cake Tin)

Ah! SO GOOD.

Happy Superb Owl Sunday, everyone!

Love them all! Superb Owls are worth watching, even if they won't kick Peyton Manning's butt. (Sorry, disappointed Patriots fan here.) My favorite is the texture on the bottom layer on the first one. Looks like real wood!

So pretty...I don't see how people could stand to cut them.

Question though - on the cake with the owl toppers, what is the middle tier supposed to be? On my phone it looks like raisins...(if that's the intent then they nailed it, but not sure how it applies to owls or trees).

Awwwww :D

Thank you for the owls! I did NOT know it was superbowl Sunday, so thanks for mentioning that.

Now I know why my husband is up so early.

Superb Owl Sunday - I love it! I'll be thinking of these fabulous cakes while I cheer and yell at the refs.

Owls are the BEST!
I love the pink baby shower owl cake the best - lovely design elements and cherry blossoms (or dogwood, not sure) - so adorable.

Superb Owl Sunday - Now this is an event I can get behind!

Gorgeous cakes - I love them all! (Or should that be "I love them owl!"?)

Aw, all these owls are adorable! And thanks for the fondant-free!

Cake #7, what texture is that third tier supposed to be? What is it made of? How?

February 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterErica

The maker of the last cake had looked at owls closely enough to see that they perch on branches with two toes in front and two behind. Hardly anyone notices this.

I will take an owl baby shower cake ANYTHING day over some of the hideous monstrosities that have been on CW.

Ha ha! Yesterday my husband said, "I keep trying to text super bowl and it keeps auto correcting it to superb owl." and I told him, "Now THAT I would watch." So when I saw your Sunday Sweets I had to laugh (and cheer!) Hooray for superb owls! Again, impossible to choose a favorite. Today, that would be like Sophie's choice. must. have. them. all. Thanks for the fun, non sports sweets today. They were right up my alley.

Awwwwwwwwwe, I'm screeching for owls here! THANK YOU.

Superb owl! I love it. I only wish there was a way to warp rugby like that. Something to do with rugs and bees maybe?

Anyway, the owls are gorgeous. Especially the cake with the wrapping branch and pastel colours. As for Cake 7 tier 3, that texture looks a bit like tightly packed dried rosebuds to me.

Hey, a wedding cake with my and hubby's initials on! And OWLS! I hereby claim that cake! To whom to I send my address?

Penalty for delay of game, because I keep pausing for a closer look! Wowie wow, these are unique and wonderful!

I am dying over the miniature clothespins on that second baby shower cake. And the little clothes and stuffed animal hanging from them? Squee!!!

February 8, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAngie

Thank you Jen. Superb Owl Sunday was a rousing success! I'm particularly excited by these cakes, since the owl is my spirit animal and these are all great examples. My favorite is also the fifth one with the wrap-around tree and the pastel owls at the top. So pretty and serene. On cake 7, the mystery layer looks to me like corks laid horizontally and packed together. I don't know why such a cake would have corks on it, but I appreciate the texture nonetheless. I'll head to bed dreaming of owls.
