What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Doctor Who Day...ish

Tomorrow is Doctor Who Day so of course we had to post some amazing Doctor Who Sweets today. Sadly, we're at a convention so we ran out of time and couldn't write our usual commentary. Sorry about that. Please enjoy today's cakes and imagine we're saying something witty and/or profound. -john (the hubby of Jen)

All awesome, but the starry night, nightmare before Christmas and minion ones are my favorites :D

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

So, shortly after asking readers to donate to you because "this IS your job", there's plenty of time to make bracelets and attend conventions, but not enough time to write commentary for todays post? I've enjoyed both sites for years, but I'm done with both.

[Editor's note- Hi MB. First let me say that we've never asked for donations on Cake Wrecks. Our Epbot readers were given the option because so many of them asked and we are extremely grateful.

Secondly, the reason Jen makes bracelets and goes to conventions is for content for Epbot. You may have noticed the extensive tutorial post on the bracelets complete with photographs and commentary. Those posts are ridiculously time consuming. Today, we're picking up more art for the give-away board and meeting readers at this con.

Finally, today was a fluke on Sunday Sweets. We had a post written but at 2am, we realized that tomorrow was Dr. Who day and I decided to throw a quick post together last minute. With finding the photos and real sources, that took 3 hours. I'm sorry that you hated it so much that you can never come back.

All that to say, I'm sorry to see you go. I assume you donated over on Epbot so please send me your email and I'll refund your donation. -john]

The Van Gogh episode was pretty creepy, so it's fun that someone got it into a cake!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHAL

I appreciate the effort you took to pull these together at the last minute, and all the effort you put into BOTH of your sites. Hugs.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Please tell me that post by MB about unfollowing your blogs because you went to a convention is some sort of satire or performance art commenting on the absurdity of entitlement the internet creates. Because I have read it three times and still don't understand why someone would get indignant because you didn't have time to write commentary for a web post that they get to enjoy for free. My head.

Regarding the cakes: I don't even watch Dr. Who and I feel compelled to insert witty commentary now. For example, the second to last cake with the Dalek: "And I thought they smelled bad on the OUTSIDE"

That last one is amazing. All buttercream too?

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

I love love love these cakes! I am a half-hearted Dr. Who fan (I love watching it but never remember to record it) and I love seeing how people are inspired to make art based on their love for the show.

I just used "love" about 15 times, didn't I?

Anyway. I was inspired to comment based on MB's comment above. Visiting a website, complaining that you want to be paid (even if it wasn't on this site) and then judging that they didn't get the normal commentary for a Sunday post is seriously just rude. You guys do this for us FOR FREE and you rock it 99.99% of the time; even without commentary, those cakes must have taken time to find and put together, so I am extremely grateful for your hard work!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Great post. Thanks for putting it together on short notice. Carry on with your bad selves! Have fun at all the conventions I can't make it to!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterApop

This just added to my Face The Raven feels. T _ T

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTheCreepyTribble

No time today to post a witty comment.
Will assume that MB will never read my comments again.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLuLu

Hear, hear to Lindsay! Sorry you guys had to deal with the ridiculousness of MB this morning. Please, please don't let that lone comment bring you down. John (thoJ), your kind, even response speaks volumes. Have a great day at the convention!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErin

The masups are fantastic, and with minions, adorable!

Sending love and light, and praying for peace in all our souls. Everyone, everywhere.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAngelaS

I would have serious problems actually eating any of these beauties! Except perhaps the second to last one. Not because it's not brilliantly done (it is), but because it wouldn' t feel quite so bad cutting up and eating Davros... :)

Also I completely agree with Lindsay!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterElincello

Huge Doctor Who fan here, as is the whole family. But more importantly, we're huge fans of this site too, and we really appreciate all the time and effort that you both put in to make it consistently wonderful.

I think I'll manage to get through my day without a handful of witty quips about cakes.

Thank you.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

Not a Doctor Who fan, but I do appreciate the Van Gogh one! That was one episode I actually saw.

And THANK YOU for this hilarious and inspiring website that y'all put together for free.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterErica

To MB: patooie! And shame on you.
To John and Jen: thank you for brightening almost every day since I discovered CakeWrecks. I'm both entertained and inspired by the good, bad, ugly and SNARKY! you share so freely.
The Starry Night mash-up is awesome.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenters.marie

What stunning cakes! If I absolutely had to pick a fave, I would go with the van Gogh cake, but then I would feel bad for the gorgeous wedding cake with Gallifreyan script and the spectacularly detailed Davros cake and the Tardis with the light-up top and actually, all the others, so I suppose I have to say that my fave is all of them.

My fave is also both of you, for this and every post on Cake Wrecks and on Epbot. Thanks for all your hard work and the stress you go through to add fun and entertainment to the days of complete strangers! Enjoy every minute of the convention! I really appreciate the humor and lightheartedness you give us!

Way to harsh the mellow, M.B.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterOld Marshmallow

Most creative people are sensitive people. I just wanted to say that I can NOT believe someone would criticize you for one measly blog post that didn't happen to have the usual comments - it isn't the first time you guys have had to give it a miss and you always explain why. Please know the rest of your fan base is more tolerant because we love and appreciate what you do - and you do it so much better than most.
Cyber Hugs.

Now...who wants the Dalek head? Yum!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTeresa from Oregon

That Vincent and the Doctor cake is FANTASTIC! I want it so badly!! That is one of my favorite episodes and that cake is gorgeous. Love the Doctor and this post. Ignore people being cranky, it is so not worth it. Sorry you have to deal with that.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAllie L

Wow. Just...wow...that someone would throw that amount of snark into what is ordinarily our peaceful Sunday ritual of Sunday Sweets!

My partner nailed it right on the head - she said, "Boy who pissed in HIS oatmeal today?" We appreciate you guys immensely and we also appreciate all the time, thought, and labor that goes into both this site and your other one, too. So, so creative! Some of the things that I see made (like the Halloween doll mobile and the candy-corn bracelets) just leave me shaking my head at how Jen ever comes up with the ideas! So please imagine me sending you both a huge virtual HUG of love and support! And sending, at the same time, a shake of the head toward MB, whose heart (unlike the Grinch's) actually must have shrunk at sending such nastiness to such gentle, kind people!

Now! All that aside, who's the old guy in the motorized wheelchair-thing? Not being a "Who" fan, I thought first of Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek. Is that he? Or is this a Who character I'm not familiar with?

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterChenaya

Is the last one a reference to "Cinderella III: A Twist in Time"?

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

@Chenaya, that's Davros, creator of the Daleks.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Thank you John and Jen for all you do! I love cake wrecks although I have banned myself from reading at work due to the weird looks I get from laughing at my iPad. This is hard work and I appreciate the time and effort you both put into it. These Dr Who cakes are stunning! I love love the minion mashup!happy Dr Who day!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJanelle

Beautiful cakes as always on Sunday Sweets. The Starry Night cake has the greatest use of buttercream ever.

I'll take this post as a reminder that it's the people behind the blog that make it fantastic. Funny cake pictures are awesome, but funny cake pictures with input from the Cake Wrecks team is the reason I've been following this website for years.

(Walks away muttering about ungrateful, entitled freeloaders who already forgot about the 6 days x 42 weeks so far this year that your team has been on the job for NO CHARGE.)

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterteabunny

I think I would love to be a Dr Who fan, but have never seen an episode. Love these cakes, and I pretty much "get" them all due to the education I have received through Cake Wrecks and Epbot. Thanks! Who knows, maybe I'll start at the beginning and spend the rest of my life catching up!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMaryM

Lindsay's comment wins! A nod to the Star Wars saga in a witty comment about Dr. Who? Yes, please!

I'm going to assume that MB was pulling your leg. Otherwise, I would have to think that s/he was the CCC of fans (a hot mess, that looks nothing like what it is supposed to represent). Ptui!!

Classy response, John, thoJ!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJMixx

So much to love in these creations! The Whomare Before Christmas, Starry Night by Vincent van Who, darling Minions, Lighthouse Tardis... Stunning wedding cake (Thanks, @Kristin "Gallifreyan script"), and I especially adore the CinderWhoLa cake.

Jen and John, and all wrecky commentators: you brighten my days and I thank you.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterjuice

Doctor Who cakes need no introduction! What a fabulous selection! :D

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterOwen Wills

Jen, john, you guys are amazing. I feel like you are my Florida friends, and I appreciate all your hard work. I know that there are projects that don't get finished, or don't go the way you wanted, posts where you can't source the cake photo, etc. You both are amazing and I, for one, appreciate that you are so consistent and punctual on posting here on CW! New content 5 days a week is so much work. And this Thanksgiving week, I'm grateful for you both!

TL;DR The Yates are amazing. End of story.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterScaperMama

Wow, I'm actually touched that you changed everything to celebrate Doctor Who day, especially when you've got other commitments and actually had something else ready to go! You guys are both so amazing!
And these cakes are amazing too! So gorgeous and some of them really show that they were created or commissioned by people who really watch and love the show, they've got so many little details. I'm so impressed.
What a great way to start Doctor Who day! And I'm feeling extra lucky because The Doctor is actually in Australia for the Whoniverse festival. It's all happening!
Love you both, John and Jen, and I hope you're having a smashing time at the convention. Can't wait to hear about over on Epbot and see your booty. Mwah!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJessB

Thank you for these Sunday Sweets and for all you do!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLLH

MB very helpfully reminded me that I meant to contribute when I saw the appeal the other day, couldn't do it at that moment and then it slipped my mind (I read CW every day, but Epbot sporadically). Anyway, after reading MB's inspirational call to action, I skedaddled over to Epbot and hit the shiny orange PayPal button. Hope MB inspires others to do the same! Jen & J(thoJ), KOKO and thank you for bringing smiles to my mornings!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAmapola

Love these Doctor Who cakes! That's a great likeness of Davros, but I wouldn't want to eat it, because ew, evil. Unless it's chocolate.

Much love and thanks to Jen and John for bringing so much enjoyment to the universe. I'm always so impressed by how consistently creative and funny and clever and just generally awesome you guys are.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMary Jayne

Don't you guys see? MB is an autocorrect typo. They meant to say Missy.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJeff

Davros! Nice to see some classic-era (i.e., No Sex, please, we're Timelords) Doctor Who getting some attention.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterWill

I don't think I've ever commented before, despite visiting the blog daily for years... I just want to say thank you for this post of beautiful cakes. They make my Whovian heart squee. I can't believe you found them all in just three hours! The unapologetic geekery in this and other posts (with or without funny, witty commentary) are a big party of the reason I fell in love with Cake Wrecks. Thank you for all your hard work, and the beautiful Sunday Sweets today. Hope the convention is fantastic#

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterkeishka

Such a shame some people have to be ingrates.

The DW cakes are gorgeous (particularly the one with the clocks) and while the commentary is usually a cherry on the top, life happens and people need to understand that. It shouldn't be necessary to apologize.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBB

@Jeff You might win the comments tonight!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterScaperMama

Since my birthday is on Tuesday (one day after Doctor Who day- I even got the correct year!) I will assume that ALL these are for me. Thank you!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMudmusher

@s.marie - Hear, hear!!

Thank you, Jen & John for all the FREE laughs, snorts & giggles through the years, & for making our lives a bit brighter.

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNew England Flybaby

I love these!

I think my favorites are the Gallifreyan Script and the cupcake with the tiny fez.

I've never really thought to myself "Hey, I'd like an edible Davros," but the Van Goh one looks delicious!

And I always, always love this site. =-)

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSeabird

That first cake is just....creepy!

November 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

What all the commenters said about MB (who is worse than a CCC - patoooie) goes double here!

I am a new Whovian (blame Netflex and the reboot). Love these cakes and your site. Hurrying on over to Epbot to make a donation.

Allons-y!

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDee, just Dee

Hi guys, love your posts always, and am appalled at MB's miserable comments, perhaps they are over worked preparing for their Christmas appearance as Scrooge! The starry night cake is beautiful beyond, thanks for sharing!

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCait

Never felt the need to comment before coming here and reading the comments on this post. There are few blogs that I read daily (or nearly daily since I'm reading Sunday's post on Monday...) but CW is high on the list. Thank you Jen and John (thoJ) for all the work you put into making your readers chuckle and "ooooh! aaaah!" each day. Now, excuse me while I head on over to Epbot to put a nickle in the jar...

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterT. Ruth OrDare

If you can forgive a second comment on one page, I would like to say "thank you" for all the laughs you have provided since I was first introduced to your pages. It's especially comforting to know that when you have an emergency and can't provide the commentary, your loving followers are ready and able to fill in for you. Cake Wrecks is my first online visit of the day and some days I get as many laughs from the comments as from the cakes themselves. You're a great, well-matched couple and the Cake Wrecks Community is a great place to live!

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMaryM

1) I LOVE Doctor Who and all of these cakes are awesome!
2) I love that someone made a beautiful cake based on Karen Hallion's wonderful Doctor Who/ Disney Princess series.
3) Unlike the rest of the week, Sunday Sweets pretty much speak for themselves. If you just said "Check out these awesome Doctor Who cakes!" and credited the bakers I would be happy with that.
4) Am I the only one who read "We're at a convention" and thought, "WOO-HOO! more convention pix coming soon to EPBOT!!! :-)"

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterEd

I am glad you left the comment from MB and editor response visible, as I know you frequently remove the more controversial comments.
Knowing that you both really take to heart all the times people criticize and spend way more time than you probably should trying to placate anonymous internet haters, it's really good for the rest of us to see the kind of crap you have to deal with on a regular basis. I know this was a small pile of crap, but it's an indication to the rest of us of what you see.
I've said it before (in the Epbot comments) but I really hope the jerks of the internet don't get you down. And John (thoj), your response was epic.
We need to delurk (if we're lurkers) and share our appreciation all the time! You two do an amazing job on Cake Wrecks and on Epbot. You're both creative geniuses, you're both absolutely hysterical and I definitely am absolutely thrilled to be able to support you in any way possible, including a regular monthly donation (eat that, MB) and regular use of the Amazon links.
So much love to you both, from snowy Winnipeg.
Oh, and those cakes are nice, too.

November 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLaurenKE

John and Jen--I am more than grateful for all you do on Cakewrecks. You two got me through my Display Cakes class with much needed levity, and you give me a great place to go when I need to take a break.

I am heartsick that anyone would post something like MB did, and hope like crazy that you do NOT take it to heart. I love you guys!
