What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: No Dungeons, Just Dragons

I dunno about you guys, but I cannot get enough of dragons. Seriously. Not only are they fantastic in every way, they also just have so much personality!

So I set out to find the Seven Dwarves of Dragons. Just 'cuz. And would you believe I found them?? Check it out:

Happy:

(By Emma Jayne Cake Design)

You know how little kids are most dangerous when they're quiet? I bet the same goes for happy dragons.

Grumpy:

(By Madhouse Bakes)

"Get your hand off my tail; you'll make it dirty."

[25 points if you get that reference]

Sneezy:

(By Betty June's)

Ok, so he's probably blowing out the candle, but since a dragon sneeze would just re-light it, I'm really enjoying the visual.

Sleepy:

(By Elaine Thomas)

All together now: D'awwwww.

Bashful:

(By The Butter End Cakery)

Not to mention oh-so elegant!

Dopey:

(By Fernanda Abarca Cakes)

Yes, that's Toothless from How To Train Your Dragon - but you must admit, he's also kinda dopey. In a good way.

Oh! And I have to show you the other cupcakes she made, too:

Those expressions! I want the guy on the middle left; he's totally giving me "the eye."

And finally, Doc:

(By Border City Cakes)

Ok, so I couldn't find a dragon in glasses - but doesn't he look extra scholarly perched on that book?
Like he's about to spring a pop quiz on us.

(I bet he teaches knight cooking classes. Eh? EH?!)

Of course, that only accounts for seven dragons, so naturally I have to add a few more:

Sparky:

(By Cake Fixation, but the blog is invite-only)

Real flames?! Parents, shield your kids' eyes; you're never gonna top this.

Jelly:

(By Rita at Touché Touchet Bakery)

As in, "Yes, I'm fabulous. You jelly?"

She's entirely fondant-free, you guys; those scales are all piped buttercream!

Chilly:

(By La Torte Perfetta Cake Design)

And finally, Cuddles & Snuggles:

(By Richard's Cakes)

Their necks are forming a heart! And the ends of their tails ARE hearts! Awwwww, LOVE.

Happy Sunday, everyone! And as always, check out our Sunday Sweets Directory if you want to see which bakers in your area have been featured here on Sweets!

I don't know what I love more - the amazing cakes or the fact that you just quoted "Albi the Racist Dragon".

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSarabeth

Albie the racist dragon!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

Hooray, I get 25 points! I love Flight of the Conchords. "He began to cry big dragon tears- which, as we all know, turn into JELLYBEANS!" :D
As always, I'm amazed by the detail in these cakes!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersilentk

An "Albi the Racist [well--not anymore] Dragon" reference! Love it :o)

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

I cannot decide what amazes me more: the spun sugar wings, the buttercream scales, or the imaginations of these decorators.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

In love with the dragon cupcakes awwwww :D

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Since you love dragons, Sparky made me think of the song "Darcy the Dragon" a Christmas song by Roger Whittlaker. Check it out - it is such a sweet song. Wish someone would turn it into an animation.

I always thought the Harry Potter cakes were my favorite Sunday Sweets. Move over, Harry, because I just saw the perfect wedding cake if I ever renew my vows. Perfectly goes with the dragon/heart/intertwined goblets we used.

Yesterday was St David's Day, the national day of Wales, the country with a Red Dragon on its flag, Graig Goch, in welsh so I shall accept this weeks sweets as your homage to the Land of Song,Castles and Rugby
http://www.visitwales.com/explore/traditions-history/st-davids-day, my husband is from St David's and although Welsh cakes are not iced they still taste scrumptious .

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdiddleymaz

No Smaug? :( But I still love the rest of the dragons.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Sneezy=Dragon snot. LOL.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDis fan

Dragon cakes particularly relevant this week as yesterday (1st March) was St David's Day, patron saint of Wales!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHannah

My favorite is Bashful--it reminds me of Falcor from The Neverending Story. I have mixed feelings about the hole in his wing though; I think maybe it'd look better if the hole were smaller. But the rest of the dragon is amazing.

Is it just me or does it look like the wings on the Sparky cake were attached wrong?

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermelanie sparkles

The Chilly Dragon is so beautiful, as are Doc and Bashful. But my favorite is Happy, he really does look the part,

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDeb

After seeing a cake like this, I don't think I'd have the heart to cut into it. I love dragons so much, and the artwork that went into all of these is amazing, I'm incredibly jealous that I don't have mad skills like this. I would want to keep them all forever as sculptures, but then again, they'd probably turn into the "Everything MOLD is New Again" CW you had last week, so I'd have to eat them, but I wouldn't want to. What a dilemma! BEAUTIFUL

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVBeach Alemap

That's all buttercream? I am stunned! And hungry.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHermione

Wow, I like all of them! So creative and put together.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

It's my birthday this week and I love dragons!! Did you do this Sunday sweets just for me?? :-D

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLucy

I get the reference! Darn racist dragon.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCassandra

How can one POSSIBLY eat those? I'd cry a river if someone would cut into a cake like that.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarlowe

I'm totally "jelly" of anyone who gets one of these cakes. As usual, Sunday Sweets are gorgeous.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPFlamingo

So cute. My favorite are the cupcakes.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

DRAGONS! So beautiful! That last one reminds me of Mr. Mordaut from Runescape!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterE.Anne

I don't know how anybody eats these cakes. They are too pretty to cut.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVicky

I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE DRAGONS! Also, I'm utterly convinced that someone had a camera on my late great Maine Coon and modeled Toothless after her, because seriously, that dragon is my cat. I'm going to go hug my stuffed dragons now.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterL

As much as I enjoy looking at these works of art they also make me hungry.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChristopher

I'm slightly disappointed that there were no Trogdor the Burninator cakes, but otherwise... that first cake is too darn cute to eat.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWill

I love that the turrets in the last cake actually look like turrets - takes skills!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMc in NZ

Sneezy the Dragon!
(That line was five syllables.
Hey, it's the weekend.)

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Those are by far the best cakes ever! I think you and I can be soul mates, I'm a fanatic when it comes to dwarfs and dragons. :D

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterindigo dragoness

Wow! I can't believe that Jelly is all buttercream -- someone has some mad piping skillz! While I adore the cupcakes, my "want" of the week is Happy -- but in plush. I totally want to hug him and squeeze him and call him George.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

I'm pretty sure Sleepy is inspired by The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris d'Lacey. It's a series about hand-made clay dragons that come to life.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterShell

I am getting married soon and am having a fantasy/celtic themed wedding. I can't afford a big baker so a friend of mine (who is a total natural and has amazing skills) is going to do it for me for cheaps. That being said, I am having a dragon and griffon theme and she will hate me forever if I asked for something like one of these. But ohhhh do I have cake envy now.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterlasair

Not sure if anyone has pointed it out yet, but that first one would be by the supremely talented Emma Jayne Cake Design. I'd recognise her stunning work anywhere!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJulie McMaster

@haiku_joy--best haiku ever! Lots of LOLs over that one.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

isn't Bashful really Falkor, the luckdragon??

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjerry

Love me some dragons, but I couldn't bear to eat them!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSmerk

I was born in the year of the dragon. I have collected them for years. These are some of the best I've ever seen. I'll take one of each!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDee Tee

Oh my word, I love all of these cakes! I seriously want the "Sleepy" dragon as a pet! He's so dang cute. And all the realistic-looking ones are just stunning. Having a small collection of dragons myself, I just love it! Thanks for the smiles, d'awws, and jaw-dropping awesome today!

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

Doc reminds me of some of my professors! Just kidding! They weren't that friendly looking.

March 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Is Bashful Balkor from "The Neverending Story"?

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTeal

You left out Smaug! Watch out VENGEANCE WILL BE UPON YOU!!!!!

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

Sneezy is delightful... of course, you do realize that the camera-wielders (and by extension WE the viewers) are standing in exactly the wrong place.

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

OMGs! awesome!!!!

i love dragons too! =)

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrystan

These are so cute!

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Falkor was an eastern-style luck dragon. So no wings and a more friendly puppy-dog face rather than the traditional eastern raptor features. I do want to know why the big hole is in the wing though. :(

And you could never put a Trogdor cake up on a Sweets day. Anyone who missed the joke wouldn't believe it was anything but a terrible wreak. :)

I could never eat Doc, he's just too pretty.

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMezzoDragon

Albi the racist dragon! I really have to go hunt that one down. The cakes are awesome as they are every Sunday but your comments floor me all the time!

March 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarcusss

Awww Yeah!!! My favorites are Bashful, Doc, and Jelly. Jelly's tiny wings are so adorable!
