What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Into The West

All that Cowboy poetry on Friday inspired me, so I thought we'd keep the theme going with some Sweet Western wonders!

(By Arte de Ka)

K, I'm calling it: Cutest. Cactus. EVAH.

So grab your Stetson, partners:

(By Cake Central user ssunshine564)

And your prettiest boots!

(By Sen Cakes)

Is it really cake? Yep! Although you'd be forgiven for doubting; it's based on a real boot, and the two are all but identical. Check out how Rose used piping to mimic the embroidery stitching:

AMAZING.

Speaking of snazzy accessories, I'm loving this orange bandana:

(By Ana Beatriz Carrard)

Although most belt-buckle-and-bandana cakes these days seem to be inspired by everyone's favorite toy Sheriff:

(By The Cake Mamas)

Can't blame 'em, though; Woody really does have fabulous fashion sense.

Here's a little beauty for all you budding equestrians out there:

(By taart van Bianca)

LOVE.

Or how about this for welcoming the newest lil' cowboy into the family?

(By It's A Piece of Cake)

Those hand painted designs are stunning.

And now for some of the sweetest Western wedding cakes I could find:

(By Becky Willard)

So that embossed "leather" and belt buckle completely fooled me, but I checked, and yes, they're edible! (Not the gems, though.) Mega hat tip to Becky; you really got me, my friend!

Next, a modern twist on a classic style:

(By Gateaux Inc.)

Banksy moved to Texas, y'all. You heard it here first.

(Ok, maybe not, but doesn't that look like it belongs in a gallery?)

Another woodgrain design, but this one's a real peach:

(By Sweet On Cake)

So many wedding cakes have the horseshoes perches on top, but I love how these are hanging around the bottom tier! The weathering on the gold is a great touch, too.

And finally, for the black-tie cowboy affair:

(By Cakes By Lisa)

Loverly.

Just promise me someone was wearing rhinestone cowboy boots.

The next to last one, with the weathered horseshoes, is *beautiful*, but it goes against horseshoe tradition. Horseshoes are supposed be hung in the "up" position, so that they hold the luck that they supposedly bring. Turn them over, and all the luck runs out! LOL

I love these, some look too pretty to eat

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Yes the horse shoe thing bugs me too! Especially on a wedding cake, you wouldn't want all you luck to run out!
Gorgeous cakes though!!!

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkat79

These are gorgeous! I want the topper on the last cake!

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

! Those embroidered beauties are the cowboy boots on my wishlist! Seeing them in cake makes me want them more :)

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngel

Came here to say the same thing: if you know enough about horseshoes to put them on a wedding cake, why would you put them upside down? And I have to say, I wouldn't want to eat that last cake in public, because you know the black is going to get all over your teeth. Beautiful for looking, not so much for eating.

The first cake though, with the child's age (6) created out of rope....spectacular!

I cannot imagine paying a lot of money for this kind of work of art and then cutting it apart and eating it! I do not are how good the cake is inside, they are just too gorgeous.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

Wonderful cakes for a lasso-r a laddie.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

I love the tooled-leather effect. And that first cake, with the arrow sticking through it, and the "6" made out of rope... charming!

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGoryDetails

I was going to mention the horse shoes. Not the best place to put the luck runs out design. Beautiful otherwise. Love the horseheads topper.

So ruggedly beautiful & perfect timing for my neck of the woods. Here in Tucson, Arizona it's Rodeo Week! Our kids had this past Thursday & Friday off school for the local rodeo (Fiesta De Los Vaqueros) instead of Presidents Day like the rest of the country. We also boast the longest non-motorized parade in the country, as all rodeo parade vehicles are pulled by horses. So thanks for putting the perfect bookend to our Rodeo Week tradition out here amongest the cacti! Yeehaw!

Well, I confess to missing both the filibuster and all the comments it engendered, but these are gorgeous cakes!

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHappy Camper

Gorgeous!!! I do have to wonder why Garrett's "OH BOY!" cake has a cowgirl on it?

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPamtha

Woodgrain for the win!

(BTW, when was the last time we had a fondant-free Sunday?)

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

These are stunning! @Pamtha -- pretty sure that is Garrett's mom-to-be.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjust me

I LOVED the "leather" wedding cake. Absolutely beautiful.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

@Pamtha: This is just a guess, but maybe the cake is a for a baby-shower, and the baby-to-be's name is Garrett? The "Mom-to-be" silhouette does look a little paunchy in the belly. =^-.-^=?

Oh, the BOOT! Oh! Oh! Oh! As a closet cowboy (I live in the UK - I have no chance!), I treated myself to two pairs of proper embroidered cowboy boots whilst on holiday in Texas the year before last and I just WANT THAT CAKE!!!

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim Anderson

Wow all of the cakes are gorgeous. The second to last one doesn't even look like it's cake. I'm just lucky to be able to make a cake without burning it let alone turning it into a work of art.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

I was wondering the same thing about Garrett's cake. who's the cowgirl? I don't think it's his mom.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersharon

You had me at Banksy.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPatricia

Movie mom....happy rodeo day from Kissimmee Fl. We had Friday off for the 132st (a little cake wreck lingo) silver spurs rodeo. We also don't take off Presidents' Day so that we can celebrate Rodeo Day! I had no idea that we had a sister city.

(First time poster.) Hey, this has nothing to do with the cakes today, but I just wanted to tell you that I really have enjoyed following both of your blogs the last few years, and you seem like a lovely person. I have enjoyed quite a few good laughs because of your efforts, and the Sunday cakes, as well as your Epbot blog are fun to read and see. Thanks for sticking at it -- the world is better with people like you in it.

The last cake with the horse heads and western embossed fondant mat are for sale through inquiry at Lisa.Menz@yahoo.com. I love all the awesome western cakes here! Great ideas and beautiful art.

I kept gasping, then scrolling down and gasping again. Gorgeous cakes.
I am in AWE of the boot. Incredible.

February 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentercyndy bush

So I had also heard the horseshoe/luck theory of hanging horseshoes. However my roommate in college hung hers down like these. When I asked her she was quite adamant that they really should be hung her way. Apparently her family had always hung them downward over a door so that the luck dripped out on your head as you went through the door.

Ah - well for Garrett's mom - wow I wish I had looked that good at my baby shower. I don't think my ankles would have allowed me to wear cowboy boots. Cakes like these make me want to have another wedding or more babies. The missed opportunities!!!!!! Curse you Sunday Sweets & Pinterest!
