What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Groundhog Day

It's Groundhog Day!

You know what that means:

If this little fella sees his shadow, we'll have six more weeks of Winter.

(By Highland Bakery)

That's right. Six more weeks of swirling flakes,

(By Emma Jayne Cake Design)

sparkling icicles,

(By The Chocolate Strawberry)

meandering drifts,

(By Planet Cake)

and finding new and exciting ways to get to work.

(By Coastal Cake Company)

Maybe some penguins can hitch an iceberg north and visit friends...

(By Not Quite Nigella)

...while the rest of us keep warm with lots of nice, hot cocoa.

(By The Cake GalleryNY)

Still, after the "Polar Vortex -- and no, the cool name does not make up for the COLD temperatures -- I think most of us would be happy if the prognosticating rodent went shadowless this year, ushering in an early spring.

Won't spring be great?

Sure, there'll be April showers,

(By Torte Di Ivana)

but that's how we get May flowers!

(By Sweet and Saucy Shop)

We'll soak up lots of sunlight,

(By Oh Sugar!)

and the woods will be awash with lush new plants,

(By Wild Orchid Baking Company)

drowsy fawns,

(By CakeCentral member Omrani Cakes)

butterflies and ladybugs.

(By Tea Party Cakes)

Ah, bliss...

Tell ya what, Punxsutawney. Why don't you just sleep in this year? We'll let you know what happens.

Sweets dreams.

I don't think I could touch that deer cake. It would make me feel like a murderer!

If winter felt even remotely as wonderful as cake #2 looks, I'd take it all year long. And just how is cake #3 levitating like that? Looks like sugary magic!

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDrockbox

The little girl with the umbrella and puppy is fantastic. And there's NO WAY I could possibly eat that fawn, let alone cut into it. I'm ready for spring.

The floating icicle cake...sweet mercy, HOW DID THEY DO THAT??!! It's incredible!!

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

The snowshoe topped cake was a great reminder of my week. I live in Birmingham, AL. The locals refer to it as B'ham (BH+AM). Pine trees are ubiquitous here. And we just went through a dusting that shut down the area for two days - now affectionately known as SNOWMAGEDON! (Dun, dun, dun, dun) The snowshoes would have come in handy.

Is the icicle cake... floating?

PENGUINS!!!!!!!!!
Too few penguin cakes on here. Or is that just me?
I don't know which of these I like best (after the penguins, of course). That snowflake one and the hot chocolate one are mighty fine, though.

The pupa hanging off the tree stump is one of the finest little touches I've ever seen on a cake.

The fiddle ferns are pretty darned fabulous, too.

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

Just squeeed at the happy sun and cocoa cakes :D

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

If winter was half as appealing as those winter cakes, I'd love the season. That snowflake one was just incredible! But that darling little girl, and that fawn, and those butterflies...major squeeing from my direction this morning!

Man, I read this as much for the commentary as for the cakes. It's amazing how you people are able to connect them with such wonderful words! :)

Anyone else see a happy Adipose floating in the hot chocolate? No? Just me? Whovian probs.

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

It makes me NUTS when people put penguins and polar bears together. I bought a puzzle of the United States once and each piece had a picture of something that symbolizes each state. The piece of Alaska had a picture of a penguin on it. o.O Thanks Sharyn for pointing out that they would need to travel to meet their "friends" the polar bears. I know it's just a cake, but this mistake happens more often than you might think.

That fawn cake is simply amazing. And that floating cake -- how did they DO THAT?

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Now inspired to draw faces on my marshmallows with a Sharpie. Sharpies are edible, right?

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

We're vitamin D deficient here in the Pacific Northwest. I think I'll just spend the next 6 weeks looking at that sunshine cake. That should do the trick, right?

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

They are all wonderful but my favorite is the cocoa & marshmallow -- and I don't even like cocoa.

The secret of the floating cake is revealed in the baker's January 12 Facebook entry:

That icicle cake blows my mind. It's absolutely breathtaking!

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle S

That fawn... I would never eat that fawn. and.. and... the little girl an the puppy and... the penguins and their friend the polar bear... *faints*

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter-Unknown-

that cake by Sweet and Saucy with the lovely flowers just made me do a deep sigh. Maybe spring is coming?

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

Love all of them. The groundhog is cute but the penguins and polar bear cake is my favorite. The cup of hot chocolate is just adorable. Adorable yummy cake goodness.

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Beth, I saw a happy adipose too! I knew it would be a hot chocolate cake from the caption, but when I saw it, my brain said "adipose!" Before it said "marshmallow!" ...should I be concerned about that?
These are so beautiful! I'm afraid if I ate the fawn cake it'd break my vegan diet (or "doet," as my phone tried to say... Lol). ;)

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlisha

Would that winter were truly so sweet!

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Beautiful cakes! I wouldn't mind 6 more weeks of winter- I've been wearing shorts off and on for the last 3 weeks, spring is coming too soon here in AZ!

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

@Beth - I hear ya! I saw it!

My sister says (and I agree) that we wouldn't be able to eat the fawn/little girl/groundhog cake. We would shellac them and keep them forever.

February 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBella

Beautiful cakes! I especially like the poppies and the sunshine/umbrella ones.
When I first learned about Groundhog Day in second grade, I didn't understand the concept---even at that age, I knew that in Minnesota we always had six more weeks (at least) of winter. I somehow missed the fact that the groundhog in question lived in Pennsylvania, where the weather wasn't exactly the same as Minnesota...

February 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

I can't be the only one hoping that the fawn cake isn't red velvet!

February 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTeal

Can you all send some of your extra Winter to California? We haven't had this little rainfall in 20 years... When there are wildfires in January, it makes you fear for your life and lungs during the summer. *sigh*

That said, I love the fawn cake!! And you all are so right, the marshmallow looks exactly like an Adipose. ;)

February 3, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Love the icicle cake. At the risk of destroying the floating illusion, it looks like it is on a clear acrylic stand. You have to look really close to see the thin stem. I'm still impressed.

February 3, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermagicdomino

Anyone else see giant centipedes crawling around the birch tree cake? No? Alrighty then, dibs on Bambi's brain!

February 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

The particular penguin cake you featured was made by the incredible Margie Carter...
The blogger you credited took part in her class and made her own version of the cake.
