What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Might Belong At Dragon Con If ...

This coming weekend John and I are heading to Dragon Con, one of the world's largest sci-fi, comicbook, fantasy, and pop-culture conventions. For four blistering days more than 50,000 geeks will flood downtown Atlanta, and oh yes, IT WILL BE GLORIOUS.

Maybe you've heard about Dragon Con before and wondered if it was right for you. If so, then allow me to help:

10 Signs You Belong At Dragon Con:

- You've ever celebrated an Xbox achievement with cake:

Xbox Cake Wreck: ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED

- You prefer your inscriptions in binary:

Alternatively, this reminds you of Flight of the Conchords' "binary solo."

- Mistakes like this fill you with nerd rage:

"Are you sure it isn't time for a colorful metaphor?"

(And bonus points if you get the reference.)

-  Speaking of mistakes: you also know that Spider-Man is spelled with a dash, Lucasfilm only has the "L" capitalized, and "Wookiee" has two Es - unless you count the original novelization, which is technically canon, but if you're up for arguing this with me then you're pretty much making my point.

"LET THE 'WOOKIEE' WIN."

- You think zombie wedding cakes are awesome:

"More like The Walking WED, am I right? Eh? EH?!"

- You occasionally forget your friends' birthday, but never H.P. Lovecraft's:

Now that's darkly dreamy.

- You once drove somewhere with a giant Dalek cake strapped into your passenger's seat:

(Why yes, now that you mention it, these ARE getting oddly specific...)

-  The recent news of Ben Affleck being cast as Batman caused you real emotional turmoil:

It's like a match made in Gotham's Malibu Dream House.

- Or maybe you don't care so much who plays Batman because WHEN THE HECK DO WE GET A FEMALE SUPERHERO MOVIE?!

Ahem.

And finally, you belong at Dracon Con if:

- You have a favorite Doctor, are now afraid of angel statues, and/or have at least three close friends who NEED this cake for their next birthday:

 via

(That's obviously not professional, but I figured you'd forgive me, just this once.)

My favorite Doctor is Peter Davison, btw, and he's going to be there this weekend, so I just may fangirl all over his shoes. Would it be terribly stalkerish if I brought him a bouquet of decorative vegetables? (I also dearly love Sylvestor McCoy, who is ALSO there, and a mutual friend offered to introduce us, and SQUEEEEEEE excuse me I may need to lie down for a moment...)

See you this weekend, fellow geeks! (And follow my tweets if you'd like to say hi!)

Thanks to Jessee, Amy L., Jennifer M., Anony M., Liliya, Sam H., Suzanne S., & Brian L. for helping me geek out with my geek on.

I spent an hour yesterday trying to find a GOOD online Klingon translator because I thought it would be funny to write a Cake Wrecks post with Klingon subtitles. Does that count? I'll have to enjoy DC vicariously through your tweets, sadly. And I NEED that TARDIS cake. (We took a Dalek to a pizza restaurant yesterday...)

Kid stuff this morning -- I may have time for a song later...

Oh yes, I need to attend the con someday! But some of these cakes could pass as con crud! (rimshot)

And ST IV FTW, because whales!!! :)

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterScaperMama

The HP lovecraft cake actually looks yummy :P and I think the zombie cake is good for those with a weird sense of humor ;) the rest are just awful D:

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Gotham Malibu
comes with spa AND secret lair.
Have a good Con time!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Peter Davison is my FAVE doctor also!! And I LOVE the colorful metaphor reference :) Everybody remember where we parked!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKrysmon

Oh that last cake just made my day! There is apparently someone else on earth who is EXACTLY LIKE ME. I love Doctor Who, I like to decorate cakes, and I am lazy. It's like looking in a sugary mirror.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

I'll be there at the first corner at the beginning of the parade. Love Dragon Con. I'll be watching for ya!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCindy

Does it count if I have not gotten into Dr. Who so much lately, but attended a Dr. Who convention before the age of 10 and I also like Peter Davidson, not only for Dr. Who but as well as Tristan Farnon?

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSwampgirl Inez

Peter Davison is my favorite Doctor, too!! So cool that you will get to see him. :)

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKerry

Okay, I have to ask; How the heck did they clean the car upholstery after they scraped the Dalek cake out of the seat?

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShirley Fowley

Ummm...unless the car transporting the Dalek is a right hand drive vehicle, my appreciation of said cake has just gone way up!!! Only an UBER Geek would let a dalek drive them around!!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPJ

Thank you for pointing out Wookiee. That's my true test when someone says they're a "huge Star Wars fan"- I'll ask them to spell Wookiee, and if they leave off the second e, I know I'm dealing with an amateur.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNagzilla

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wondered about the Dalek frosting on the car seat.

Gotta love geeky cakes!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

Oh, my, Peter Davison in person. To die for. yes.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLizziebeth10

Dragon*Con is on my bucket list. I look forward to seeing your updates. :)

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMisti

Yeah! I win bonus points!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

EEE COLORFUL METAPHORS! I make that reference all the time and no one ever gets it. Thanks for making my day! Wish I could be there.

Sung to "It's Not Easy Being Green"

It's not that easy baking geek
Having to celebrate each level you achieve
And I think binary cakes with hidden messages get old
And people yell when you spell prosper like that.

It's not that easy baking geek.
Having to argue about the numbers of Es, of all things
And people tend to pass out over
All the blood you splashed about
And ghastly zombies in the fondant
Leave scars in my eyes.

But geek can mean so many things
And cake makes Cthulhu cool and friendly-like
And that Dalek cake probably stained
The seat of that car, 'cause
it's blue as can be

Since geek is what you want to be
Malibu Batman's there for you to buy
And you wonder why Wonder
Woman's swollen, but she'll do fine
She's beautiful, as is the Tardis cake, to me
**********

I'd be a double dumb a** if I didn't get that reference.

Hey guys, Jen just posted photos of her truly STUNNING Dragon Con costume on Epbot! Hurry! Go look NOW!!!! (It's SO amazing!!!) I promise I won't use any more exclamation points today.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Wait. Doesn't everybody have a favorite Doctor? And isn't Peter Davidson pretty much the best one ever?

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDrockbox

I guess I get bonus points. I think I'll celebrate by doing new cake relate lyrics to a song. Oh wait.....

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTed C

If only I'd seen that cake before half killing myself making a very poor Tardis cake for my daughter's birthday!
Just watched the Dr Who prom on tv - full orchestra in the Albert Hall, Matt Smith, Peter Davison, Cybermen, Daleks, Silurians, etc. - brilliant, catch it if you are a fan.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

No, no, no... Nobody can compare to David Tennant. The best Doctor EVER!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeghanKelly

The Not-TARDIS cake cracked me up. :)
Also, Peter Davison AND Sylvester McCoy (aka my two favorite classic Doctors) at Dragon*Con? I AM SO JEALOUS.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

"Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"
Spock spoke that line.
I'll take my bonus points in large giggles.
~Live long and post more wrecks~

=^-.-^=

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclownss

Speaking of Star Trek and/or geeks, you made me think of my favorite geek, Sheldon Cooper, who, upon receiving a napkin that Leonard Nimoy had wiped his mouth on, went into full freak-out mode, hyperventilating and yelling,"I possess the DNA of Leonard Nimoy?!?! " =^~.~^=

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclownss

Hey, another "All Creatures Great and Small" fan! I have to admit Peter Davison is my 2nd favorite doctor, after David Tennant.

Everybody who spelled Peter's last name "Davidson", please subtract 1000 geek points.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteressjaytee

Ah, my heart shall always have a soft spot for Four, though Davison was pretty durn cool too. :-) And anyone who *doesn't* get the ST IV reference should toss their Geek Card in the trash. ;-)

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

So, I'm prepared to be unpopular...my fave doctor is Tom Baker. Maybe it has to do with watching Dr. Who and Zoom (come on and Zoom, zoom, zoom-a zoom....) in my basement when I was 10. GO PBS!

No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space! (actually, I'm from Ottawa, but you get the idea)

Have superfun Jen and John (thoJ)!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkrunchifrog

So the bakery didn't notice that they put the star on Wonder Woman's tiara *upside-down* but they *did* add *giant bulging veins* on her biceps....hunh.
A strange combination of lack-of/attention-to details thar....

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNerfbomb

I'm so sorry, but you CAN NOT post about Dragon Con without any mention of Anne McCaffrey. I'm a little traumatized

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Star Trek IV. Where are my bonus points? :)

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTrekkie Gal

Well, I don't pass based on a few off those points but how about these? I will answer to Jee if you call me that because Jeenome is my gnome rogue's name in WoW and no one ever types the whole name, so I'm Jee. I still have a nerd girl crush on Michael Shanks aka Daniel Jackson from Stargate SG1. I always say Fantastic in a British accent and am dying to cosplay as Donna Nobel if the Doctor Who 50th special comes to a theater close to me.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

We're all a little traumatized that Anne McCaffrey passed away. She was a wonderful writer, and an amazing woman.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

Wonder Woman terrifies me O.O

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Loved the wonder Woman cake. I've been to a Dragoncon convention before, I met James Doohan, the guy that played Scotty in the original Star Trek, the year before he died. He was so nice.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Saxon

The Dalek is kind of suggestive dont you think? and I love the last one...lol thats what I should do for my daughter... and Wonder Woman?/ wonder man??? Wonder wonder. And poor Peter Davison... will for ever be Tristan from All creatures Great and Small... and he followed Tom Baker... my favorite.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLor

Who is H.P. Loveneft?

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I guess I am old school. My favorite Dr of all time was Tom Baker.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterluckywish1104

...

How bad is it that I would have just slavered the last cake in blue icing and wrote "Bad Wolf" on the side to declare it done?

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIsabella

Whilst Peter Davison is OK (Sylvester McCoy?! No way) I am afraid I am much preferring Matt Smith and David Tennant.
Tom Baker scares the bejesus out of me though! For a good guy he was terrifying......

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenbo

Um, John Pertwee fan here. Yes, I know, I know, but still . . . Tom Baker second, Sylvester McCoy in third place. I have not seen any of the First or Second Doctor episode fragments yet, and the new series? Sorry, it doesn't do much for me for some reason.

Have a blast at DragonCon!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTXRed

I stayed in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis last week & there were apparently some DragonCon fans who either got their dates mixed up or were way early, because I saw a Storm Trooper and one of those Sandpeople on the elevator one night! LOL

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSusan

Cake #3 - I used to have a roommate who made sure her shopping list always included "diaphers" for her toddler. I'm pleased to see she's apparently now a cake decorator!

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLeah

Patrick Troughton was the best Doctor, by far. Followed by Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. Then Davison. Although, having seen him in "The Last Detective" lately, I think Davison would be an awesome Doctor now -- much better than he was then.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Have fun at DragonCon. I'll be at WorldCon myself! Wheee!!! Loved all these cakes...and yes, I got all the references. LOL.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterA. Paul

OMG!! THE FIFTH'S MY DOCTOER TOO!!!!!!!!!! I wanna die and most likely will mumble or pass out the minute I get to see him. A little bummed I didn't get to finish my femme!5th Doctor costume this year, but oh well. I'm always excited for Sylvester McCoy being a guest again - he always tells my dad that he loves his costume (it's all 11 doctors...he's got a time story and everything).

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSparkles

Can we say JEALOUS! For some reason I went insane and married a sports nut who's not into Scifi - what was I thinking! :) Luckily my daughter and son-in-law are on my side. One day I will get there - probably with them and I'll be the designated babysitter. Of course grandma with 2 kids at Dragon Con...could be trouble! :)

Oh and Tom Baker rules! Although I would love to meet Peter Davidson.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKaren in KS

I love Chewbacca, and recently got to meet Peter Mayhew at a convention. I got to tell him all about how I was a lonely little geek girl who's best friend as a kid was Chewbacca. I had a Chewie action figure and took it with me everywhere. I didn't have the best home life, but I always had Chewbacca, who I'm sure little girl me saw as some kind of protective teddy bear who would always be there for her. I was crying and Peter was extremely sweet about this 30ish lady blubbering about her love of a Wookiee (even if my little girl had no idea what Mommy was crying about and was pretty confused about who I was talking to). It was a great experience and I'll never forget it.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

Yes Flight of the Conchords reference! (Do you have any other skills, like typing?)
And hahaha "darkly dreamy!" I'll have to use that in conversation and see if anyone gets it. Love Lovecraft!

And to be perfectly honest, Ben Affleck cannot possibly make a worse Batman than Christian Bale. He just can't. That's not a knock against the Nolan movies, just Bale.

August 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

I didn't know-or more likely I'd forgotten until recently-that Gene Roddenberry created the term Trekkie. Learn something old every now and then...=^0.o^=
