What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Goes Geek - Again!

It's been far too long since we drooled over geeky weddings, you guys. LET'S FIX THAT.

(By Cakes By Kayleigh)

At first I thought this was just a Doctor Who/Star Wars mashup, but look closer: there's also a Stargate, Serenity from Firefly, the Enterprise, a pokéball, and Link's sword! (Did I miss anything?)

For the classic video game fans:

(By Aux TROIS petits cochons)

D'aww. Digging the arcade buttons on the cake board!

Oooh, and here's the prettiest Settlers of Catan cake I've ever seen:

(By The Cake Whisperer)

With little bride and groom sheep! Ah! I DIE FROM TEH CUTE.

Maybe you're more of a Game of Thrones person:

(By Tastefully Yours Cake Art)

In that case, any way you slice it, you'll definitely have enough swords.

How about a Dark Knight for your big day?

(By Star Cakes)

Ok, so this MAY not be a wedding cake. But in my defense: PREEETTTTTY.

I think you all know the way to my heart, though:

(By Roses and Bows Cakery)

With sparkly steampunk, of course!

This design reminds me of the new Toothsome Chocolate Emporium here in Orlando - aka, the prettiest steampunk chocolate factory ever. Like this cake, it's shiny and colorful as opposed to rusty and grungy. (I took ALL the photos if you want to see.)

Here comes another epic mashup:

(By Black Cherry Cake Company)

WOW.

Sharyn and I were bemoaning the fact that we had to pick just ONE Black Cherry cake to post this week. They are THE source for fabulous geek designs, you guys. So good. Who else could put together Miyazaki, Bleach, Supernatural, and Star Wars this seamlessly?

Oh! And speaking of fandoms that go together, have you heard of SuperWhoLock?

(By The London Baker)

That's Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock. (See the smiley on the TARDIS? And the 221B?)

This next one may not be a specific fandom, but, um, space is geeky, right?

(By Le Sucre au Four)

Besides, how cute is that rocket ship?? SQUEE! I love the smoke trail!

And finally, friends, Romans, Dizgeeks... BEHOLD.

(By Crumb.s)

The most beautiful Beauty and the Beast cake yet! I believe that's entirely hand-painted, and I can't get over how vivid the colors are. So perfect!

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope these cakes helped make it extra Sweet.

Beautiful cakes, as always - and you can NEVER post enough Geeky cakes for the Sunday Sweets edition! ;) I think "Big Hero 6" got confused with "Bleach" on the Black Cherry Cake Company's cake, though...is that what they advertised it as on their site?

[Editor's note- Obviously, that's Bleach and NOT Big Hero 6. I was just testing you guys. Yeah. Heh. -john (who clearly knew it was Bleach and not Big Hero 6)]

Quick correction: The second tier on the Black Cherry Cake Company cake is from the anime Bleach, not Big Hero 6! Though I have been in the mood to watch it lately...

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSam

I think that the mask on the seventh cake is from the anime Bleach, not Big Hero 6. Gorgeous cake, and I love all the geekiness!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCG

Sorry to interject, but I think that the mash-up cake tier is from the Bleach series and not Big Hero Six. The mask is similar, with red stripes on a white background, but the mask from Bleach is torn apart with the eye in it.

Love your blog! And I agree, Steampunk is the best!

This is TOO weird! Only a few hours ago, I left a comment on EPBOT about my HUGE Disney collection. What I failed to mention is that it's all "Beauty & the Beast!" And then to come here and see this amazing cake. WOW. I'm a huge BatB fan; in fact, I actually re-created that exact stained glass window on a sheet of 10x12 glass using glass paints and the faux "leading" that comes out of a bottle. It literally took DAYS to complete, so I am guessing that cake took at least as long. Who could eat it after all that work?

Okay, back to staring at it in wonder. Thanks for this great post!

Awesome!

Not to be pendantic... but the Miyazaki mashup cake is actually Bleach, not Big Hero 6...

Ever thought about doing a Sailor Moon Sunday Sweets? I'm sure there are plenty wrecks, too.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClint

For the Black Cherry cake, I'm pretty sure that's Ichigo's Hollow Mask (Bleach) and not the mask of the professor in Big Hero 6.

I want the space cake :D

I always love the Sunday Sweets, and today was no exception. Every one got oooohhh'ed and awweeeee'd over. Until I came to the solar system one, and then I sqealed. Loudly. Look - they included the astroid belt! They left off Pluto but hey the rest of it is so perfect we'll overlook it.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen S

It looks like the the Black Cherry Cake Company cake also has Hobbit holes on the side, too! Amazing!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterColeen

I got teary when I saw the bottom layer of the Black Cherry cake. RIP Leia Organa.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterdutchgirl

Hey! Love all these geeky cakes!!! Beautiful.
And just sayin, I'm pretty sure the suit and black wings on the Black Cherry cake are a Death Note reference too. Sorry....such an anime geek >_<

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJla musings

Might we need to prepare the bunker for the "Bleach" deal? Just sayin...

All these are gorgeous cakes; my favorites are Beauty and the Beast and the classic video games cakes.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-Marie

There's a USS Enterprise on the first cake as well. They covered quite a few epic space nerdoms there.

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSongbird.889

Is that the front door of Bag End on the bottom tier of the Black Cherry Cake?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterchud

Love the SuperWhoLock cake! I am a HUGE Sherlock fan. In fact, we need more Sherlock cakes on Sunday sweets, though Sherlock cake wrecks could be quite amusing, too! :)

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNicole

Maybe it is just me, because I am looking on my phone, but Batman looks like he is peeing on the buildings. Just something my twisted mind is going to see. Love it though!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterKarla

That's a Pokeball on the first cake, too, next to the Falcon. And I'm really wondering what the flag is from -- moon landing astronaut, maybe?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAKS

These are amazing works of art! Love the Supernatural references - hope to see more in your future posts. Keep up the awesome work!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterStLMetroMom

The Beauty and the Beast cake is amazing! And the little rocket ship is adorbs too. I don't know how you recognize so many of the shows (never heard of Bleach) but I'm glad you do!

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

Would that GoT cake by any chance, be .. red velvet?

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeregrin

My son just pointed out there's a TARDIS on the video game cake (look closely at the Donkey Kong level).

January 8, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHolly

The solar system is a delight! Correct order and a little rocket ship!!

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymaz

In the Bleach mash up, how do we know that's a Supernatural Castiel and not a Keanu Constantine? Hmmm?

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaula

Sorry Holly, the current generation sees what it already sees: that 'tardis' is actually a flaming barrel from the video game.

Though I am also guilty of seeing what I am used to seeing; I thought the Supernatural layer was supposed to be a Death Note one... and a double check shows me that what makes the difference, is a red tie. *shakes fist in the air* You win this round Supernatural!

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLari

About the first cake... Kayleigh says on her Facebook page that Harry Potter was also included (it's the only fandom you didn't mention). I think the "flag" on the right side is actually a Marauder's Map and a wand! I put the link to her photo in the URL if anyone else wants to look.

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAli

Lari, You are right! I missed the tie color.

I'm still dying over the Beauty & the Beast cake. AMAZING.

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJLA Musings

Loved all these geeky cakes, but the first one is blowing my mind. All my favs beautifully rendered on one cake. And what gives that ethereal glow to fondant? Did it take a skilled use of the force? A magic potion? Time travel to another dimension of cake decorating? Inquiring minds...

January 9, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBluebonnet

I love these cakes. My only problem with them is the color. I made my mom a galaxy/Tardis cake for her birthday about a year ago. (I am not a professional. I do it as a hobby) I used black fondant and food coloring to make a pretty spectacular looking galaxy... My Tardis could have used a bit of work but she liked it. Anyway, not to be gross but everyone who ate the cake as delicious as it was, was pooing green/blue for at least a week.
