What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: The 10 Cutest Cakes Of All Time*

I know what you're thinking: "Why hasn't john (the hubby of Jen) written a Sweets in like, 3 years? I miss his clever use of the word daisy!" The answer is I was asleep.

So. To make up for lost time, I present:

The 10 Cutest Cakes Of All Time*
(*that we could find on the internet)**
(**that we haven't already posted)***
(***as far as I know)

Yeah.

#10- Bunny Taking A Shower

(By Sugar High Inc.)

Because seriously, look at that bunny.

Also, from a technical standpoint, look how smooth everything is. That's hard to do. If you don't believe me, look at every wedding missed mark we've ever posted.

#9- Quilted Owl

(By Chrisie's Cakes)

I actually teared up a little when I saw this cake.

Also, from a technical standpoint, the quilting and textures are beautiful. Look at the little feet!

#8- Puppy Pretty Much Just Waving

(By Cake DIY)

HELLO leetle puppy dawg!

Also, from a technical standpoint, d'awwwwww.

Fun fact! I have misspelled technical three times in a row now.

#7- Kitten Possibly Drowning In A Cake

(By Cake Designs By Deborah)

At first glance, this looks pretty tragic. Maybe the kitten's just moments from death. Or maybe I'm reading too much into this. But how do we know?

Also, I have no techinicla* standpoint.
(*I'm embracing my awful spelling.)

#6- Panda In Mid-High Five

(By Sweet Little Cakes)

Duuude. I would very much like to snuggle him.

Fun fact: Pandas communicate almost exclusively by high five. -source: Wikipedia

#5- Adorable Cactus

(By Hello Naomi)

Why yes, Mr. Cactus. I would love a stabby, stabby hug. And thank you for asking.

#4- (Incoherent Squealing)

(By Wonder Cake)

(more incoherent squealing)

#3- Resigned To His Fate Owl

(By Zoe's Fancy Cakes)

I love the expression. It's like a grandfather at Epcot getting his picture taken late in the day in front of Spaceship Earth while his grandkids are screaming in the background about how they hate Epcot and they want to see Elsa.

#2- Elephant That Kinda Looks Like He's Pooping String

(By Birthday Center Elite. Maybe.)

But C'MON! The string makes a heart! So, like, it's a heart string!

Also, from a terginicle standpoint, do you know how hard it is to get nice sharp edges on a cake like that?! It's impossible. This cake is literally impossible. Just saying.

And the best cake this week that made Jen and I laugh so hard we snorted a little:

#1- Startled Sloth

(Baker unknown)

Because he's seen things, man. He's seen things...

Thanks for being the best readers ever, you guys. And HAPPY SUNDAY!!!

That owl Epcot caption - BEST EVER! I was 'hooting' :p

❤❤That cactus❤❤
I sometimes think the Sunday Sweets are a little too pretty to be eaten but that Cactus cake is the perfect combination of gorgeous and cant wait to dig in.

OhWow~How could anyone hurt that adorable, cuddly, and apprehensive-yet-maybe-hopeful sloth cake??? I want to love him and squeeze him and hug him and take him home for my very own.... ... ... It IS chocolate, RIGHT? =^-.-^=

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

LOVE! Thanks so much for sharing!

If you like sloths, you should take yourselves off to see Zootopia! I saw it with the hubs and cupcakes yesterday, and I can't recommend it highly enough. THE SLOTHS WERE FANTASTIC ^_^

The beauty of Sunday Sweets combined with the extraordinary humor of the weekday posts: the perfect storm of Cake Wrecks. Thanks, john (thoJ).

The kitten doesn't look like it's drowning to me. Just looks a bit surprised to be on top of a top hat. :)

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSeanette

These are beautiful! I have one little quibble and I'm surprised the knitting and quilting communities have not all ganged up on you yet. The owl does have a bit of a quilting pattern on it, but the texture you rightfully praised is more like knitted texture, "techniclay".

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

I'm just a bit sad because the cake wreckers who make those mop-furred "dogs" are going to make minor changes to them and start selling them as Zootopia-inspired "sloths"

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJamoche

oh that poor sloth! I know EXACTLY what is happening because it happened to me. Seriously horrible vertigo. The spins, not drug or drink induced, that lasted for weeks. You have to keep your eyes wide open, desperately gripping the ground to keep from sliding sideways into oblivion as gravity fails you.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermsanthrope

Is that sloth a CCC? I didn't know that those could be pretty.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterkelticat

How could anyone ever cut into one of those, particularly the adorable animal ones? I'd feel like I was murdering something.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTern

I want a plushy cactus :D

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

To number four I say, "Give me big, anime eyes."
Good dog!

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJake & Me

I feel like the story with #3 is something you and Jen have probably witnessed in person :)

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

"Incoherent squealing" is EXACTLY what my obsessed with cute (yes, he sleeps with 53 stuffed animals in his bed) 7-yr old did when he saw that puppy cake. "OOOOOHMYGOOOOOSHHHHHHIT'SSOOOOOOOCUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTTTTEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!"

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJenny

The first one isn't a cake, it's a topper...
You can learn to make it here: http://www.craftsy.com/class/too-cute-toppers/5248?_ct=sbqii-sqjuweho-dum&_ctp=2&rceId=1458508125485~y5w1yx97

The third one, the adorable white dog, is by Debbie Brown!
She's written many incredible cake books.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMimi

Today's post made me well up with all the love. Sending it right back to you and Jen. 💗

And I second the Zootopia recommendation. When the sloth got the joke, it was the best animated facial expression ever.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAngelaS

Haha, just realized you shouldn't type "oh my gosh it's" without spaces. :D Oops!

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJenny

In keeping with your elephant caption, I'm pretty sure that sloth may have overtrusted a fart!

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Dear John (hubby of Jen) -- you have outdone yourself, not only with your selections, but also your observations and self-deprecating humor. The humor built to the point that, once I started laughing, I ended up laughing harder at the next, then the next, etc. (Gallagher manages the same technique with his "sledge-o-matic"...see what I did there--I can spell "technique" (LOL)).

Anyway--fabulous job, and I'll be coming back to this one again and again in the days to come.

BTW, I fell in love with the bunny, and while the others were amazing, I want the bunny ..... SQUEEEE!!

Thanks!

On the owl on stump:

or a teacher anxiously awaiting spring break!

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRenmandfx

Love the quilted owl! My classroom is decorated in owls right now. We must celebrate with an owl cake! Or the bunny in the bath. Or the puppy waving. Such cuteness! Sad fact: I never noticed your misspellings. Maybe my students would get away with bad spelling if they distracted me with cute cake critters.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

I couldn't eat any of these, but I want them all in plush form!

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJammies

OMGeeee. the sloth cake....I can't make words, the face, the 'arms??' I need this, my daughter is a HUGE sloth fan. I know, who knew they had fans? She has been doing this sloth pose in pix for years. I think this might be the most appropriate cake for her graduation. All the other cakes are too pretty to cut, too perfect for words. THIS SLOTH tho

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDiane

I love the two owls - especially "Grandpa"!

And that sloth... adorable. =-)

I third the recommendation of "Zootopia", too.

March 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSeabird

Fabulous post, John...but the caption for the owl-on-a-stump takes the cake. I could almost hear the grand-owlets whining.

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterhyphen8

Wow, the creativity behind each cake is mind blowing! The sloth (nr 1) is absolutely spot on though, great stuff!

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHeléne Robertsson

D'aww! I want that little white puppy from #4 to jump around my feet welcoming me home every day! And I want to cuddle the poor surprised sloth and tell him it's going to be ok. And your description of the resigned owl? Spot on!!

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

I agree , too pretty cute to be eaten but that sloth!! OMG.. both too cute and too a leeetle scary.

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered Commentersuzie dods

I get it, Sloth. I too have seen things, man, and the only thing left to do is hug the earth and hang on.

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEvalyn

John (thoj), don't worry about tearing up. It's probably just allergies caused by the daisies on on the other cakes. And, even if I am wrong, it won't bother you for long. I am going to steal the knitted owl cake. As cute as the others are, it is the cutest.

And, from a technerdical standpoint, the following should be "Jen and me." The cake is the subject and you and Jen are the wonderful objects.

"And the best cake this week that made Jen and I laugh so hard we snorted a little:"

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJane

I've been on the Internet since it opened. I know how that sloth feels.

March 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHairfish

I'm next in line for the stabby, stabby hug from the most freaking adorable cactus (and cake) I've ever seen!

March 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTrekkie Gal

mindy1's comment had me google "plush cactus". Found a number on Etsy, but this was the closest one to being as cute as the cake.
