What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Savors The Moment

You may have noticed Christmas is coming, minions, bringing stress and sweets, great wonder and worry. Every year I tell myself THIS will be the Hallmark year, and every year I look around on January 1st, bewildered, wondering where the month went.

I think the key is savoring the little things. Look at the lights on your street. Sing along to Pentatonix in traffic. Heck, watch a Hallmark movie. And right now? Come moon over these lovelies with me:

(By Tortenherz)

Yay for soft pastels! Why, just looking at this cake makes me feel more peaceful. I almost forgot I haven't sent out a single Christmas card this year! Haha!

Now, let's talk drama:

(By CakeHeaven by Marlene)

Because this beauty has it in spades. Or snowflakes, as the case may be.

Here's a nifty tree topper:

(By Vavi's Cakes and Cupcakes)

I love all the ornaments - and how some are hanging inside the tree!

Rustic tree bark and plaid just got a seriously glam upgrade:

(By Make Me My Cake)

That little touch of green on top makes me happy. And I'm out of clean socks and nursing a sick cat.
Just saying.

Oooh, and look at this brush embroidery!

(By CakeCentral member TopSecretFairy)

SO GOOD. Like it's been carved out of frost. Or ice.
Or frosting or icing. (Eh? EH?)

Who knew burgundy and mint green would look this Sweet together?

(By Cake Creations by ME)

Seriously, what a great color combo! Though that filigree trim on top is my favorite.

We don't have snow down here - in fact, it's a rather annoying 80 degrees right now - so I'm ready to walk into this cake:

(By Made with Love)

Well, not walk into the cake, exactly, but onto that snowy hilltop. The 3D effect is so perfect! Our very own slice of silent night. Ahhh.

Let's talk about how impossible it is to get this seemingly-simple frosting texture:

(By 5th Avenue Cake Designs)

Have you ever tried this? SO HARD. We mere mortals don't have a chance. But I love how it looks like tree bark - and did you spot the tiny trees at the bottom? One's even popping out of the cake! Love it.

Another all-is-right-with-the-world pretty:

(By CakeAvenue Design)

Take a minute to see all the amazing detail here: the tree garland, the birds, the cameo. That's a minute you're focusing on something beautiful today. We need more minutes like that.

And finally, here's a Sweet that manages to be snowy and snuggly at the same time:

(By Van Goh Cakes)

How - HOW - do you get three completely different, completely convincing textures on one cake?! I see a knit sweater, smooth tree bark, and pierced porcelain perfection. WOW.

Also, I'd like that little wreath and the trio of wood reindeer, please.

Hope you guys enjoyed savoring some not-so-little things with me! Here's to finding lots more happy, beautiful moments to this month.

The weather here is gray, cool and mucky, so seeing cute cakes like this is very cheery :D

That third cake down (ornaments hanging in the tree) is supposed to be a rotating music box. My MIL has a similar one.

Off to work to hopefully NOT wreck any cakes today.

Beautiful cakes. I love Pentatonix as well. I hope you got to watch their prime time Christmas special.

I hope your kitty will be okay. :(

So peaceful! Just cold night, silent snowfall, stars between the snowflakes -and of course the huge moon brighting everything up. And in a distance -a christmascarol that almost makes you cry. The 7:th cake is kind of totally christmas-peace. So much "silent night". I got so inspired to translate it into an embrodery or another kind of craft with layers of felt. To put up on the wall every year in December.

Well said, Alice Shortcake! These are all so amazing.
Another cake masterpiece to see is on BBC news.I couldn't figure out how to share it, but it should not be hard to find. On BBC News Facebook page titled "Tick tock... it's a huge tasty timepiece".
Happy Holidays!

Sorry--I see three rolls of toilet paper, beautifully decorated.

You, john, Sharyn, and your fantastic blogs have helped me through a tough year. These cakes are the "topper." Sorry, I'll show myself out now.

Hope the cat is better soon. And that Hanukkah Harry brings you some socks. (Santa brings fun stuff; HH brings stuff your mom/grandmother would give you.) ;)

These are beautiful, but on the Christmas ornament cake, all I can think is "blue poop". O.o

December 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

That last cake has FOUR distinct textures, there's a kind of popcorn ceiling thing or maybe that's falling snow going on with the spacer layers. Beautiful cakes! And I hope the cat gets well soon.

Thank you so much for including my cake (it's number 7, the navy and white scene) there is a video of it being made on my Facebook page facebook.com/PamelaMcCaffreyCakes and also a companion piece if you are interested. I am so delighted that you like it.

Also thank you Elisabet for your lovely comment, it's much appreciated.

Cake #5 reminds me of my wedding. Got married the day after Christmas, 37 years ago. Blue is my favorite color, so I went with an icy blue, white and silver winter color scheme. What I didn't realize was that the church would have red poinsettias everywhere, in addition to my beautiful winter wonderland inspired floral arrangements. A real eye-popping color combo.
