What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

When They Go High, You Go Logo

I love a good hand-piped logo wreck. It says, "YAY TEAM!" without all that pretentious "artistry" and/or "talent."

For instance, bakers, you know that maybe three people in the world could recreate this logo in buttercream:

You KNOW it.

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try!

Really captures the majesty.

Or how 'bout the Patriots logo? Impossible?

Of COURSE it's impossible!
It's not like you don't know you can't do it!

[pauses to re-read last sentence slowly, finally nods]

Ahem.

Do it anyway!

I always say apostrophes are for sissies.

I feel this is an EXCELLENT time to remind you all of one of my personal favorites:

COUNT THE TOES.

And finally, anyone have a wing and a prayer?

No?

Alllllllrighty, then.

Thanks to Alan W., Michele L., Mandy, & Sam T. for getting the Greatest American Hero theme song stuck in my head. Again. (Just me?)

Believe it or not,
I'm walking on air.
I never thought I could feel so free-
Flying away on a wing and a prayer.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it's just me.

(This always reminds me of George Costanza's answering machine)

Oh just wook at those mean wittle wogos twying to wook so tough. Who's a tewwifying elephant? You are! Yes you are. And you. Oh my goodness. You're going to win our independence someday aren't you? You big stwong patriot. And who's a mean tiger. OOOH I'm afwaid! He's so vicious. And that wittle bitty...Oh my God, it's dead!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I feeble defense of the UK effort, cats can and do exhibit polydactylism. But, my favourite is the Patriots one where his eye blob drools down from his hat.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterShirley

"I don't mean to pry, but do you have six claws on your right paw?"
"Do you always begin conversations this way?"
"My father was slaughtered by a six-fingered mascot."

That's all that kept running through my head. Sorry.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

That UK cake. I see horribly deformed conjoined teddy bears. The one on the left with the beads in his hair is SHOCKED to see his twin turning into a vampire!
Just me? Okay then.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJenny

UK has a new logo you need to see, just imagine 2 birds having sex.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

You beat me too it KimS, LOL. I too know the words from that series theme song, by heart! And now, there are at least 3 of us, Cookie, KimS and John (thoj) making William Katt feel so proud of us, if he only knew!
One of my fave show quotes: Bank Robber: "Who are you supposed to be?" Ralph: "Tooth Fairy...PUNCH!"
Thanks for the earworm guys! "flying away on a wing and a prayer...."

The first cake doesn't say BAMA (or any misspelling thereof), so I choose to believe that this wasn't meant to show the logo and the baker instead wanted to create a picture of a bizarre mating ritual by zombie worms. Which is clearly what this is.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLeonie

Poor Big Al, he has been butchered. As a Bama fan, I am very sad about this. As a CakeWrecks fan, I love that it was the first one in the post.

ROLL TIDE!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMoira

The patriots one was a least a good faith effort, although poorly executed. The ravens one appears to be just a random smear of icing with a random word next to it.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Nevermore.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKathy

The last one wouldn't be so bad if they were trying for a vulture...

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMel M

Any Stillers fan will tell you that the dead bird on the dirty birds (or Cleveland Carpetbaggers) cake is more than fitting. We can all hope that after Sunday, that is the outcome and that cake will celebrate yet another birds loss to Pittsburgh.

A native of the 'Burgh!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGoose

As for the last cake: "Quote the raven..."

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDrgns4vr

The last one looks like a dead squid.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterzeph

The raven looks like a Dr. Seuss character. A sad bird that lost his Truffula tree home?

We *know* bakeries have airbrushes. This seems like an appropriate time for an airbrush and a stencil, but nooooo-oooo!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

Suddenly, I feel like my attempts at logos don't seem so bad!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air....

When I was in high school, I used to sing that song when I was stressed out or anxious or in a high-pressure situation in order to calm myself down. And now it'll be stuck in my head for days. :)

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarmen

Well in most cases, the decorators are prohibited from recreating the logo and or mascot so they have to try and be creative. Try.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRoRo

These are just awful! Horrible for these teams.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

The UK cake looks like Freddy Krueger practicing his kung fu.

As for the Ravens cake, all I have to say is, "Nevermore."

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEselle

As a die-hard Tennessee Vols fan, knowing that some Bama fan got their cookie cake hilariously wrecked brings so much joy to my heart! Go Big Orange!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

It's just a polydactal kitty, It's ok.
But the blue bird logo turned into a modest, yet lovely, squid!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRose

Any cake is a good cake as long as it has Alabama on it! Well, not really, as you have proven. Anyway...ROLL TIDE!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKim

I don't see the Greatest American Hero theme song connection, but thanks for that blast-from-the-past earworm. One of my favorites. Must find DVDs.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTriciaL

I'd take a whack at it. I've done an Insane Clown Posse birthday cake in buttercream. The UK one looks like kung-fu fighting gone horribly wrong!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermarcie

Look at what's happened to me...
I can't believe it myself!
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world,
Should have been somebody else!

Believe it or not, I'm walking on air...

The UK cake always makes me laugh. Poor thing has no nose! (How does he smell? Terribly!)

Happy Friday everybody!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterkrunchifrog

I could do almost all of these, however I also understand that it can't be done freehand. I'd have used wax paper transfer to make the logo, let it get cold and then transfer it over to the cake.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

That little dead bird on the last cookie makes me so sad.

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDelaine Zody

This is one of those times I wish we could post photos. Links will have to do.

When my son graduated from high school, I wanted his school logo on the cake. They're the Chieftains, and the logo is very detailed. Here's an example.

http://mascotdb.com/team.php?id=10126

A teenage cake decorator did the cake. She did a MUCH better job than any of these wreckerators. Here's the final product:

Sadly, the bakery is closed now. Not sure why. It certainly wasn'5 because of their cakes!

November 4, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

Oh man the six toed critter made me laugh considering I had Inigo Montoya in my head yelling it killed his father and prepare to die lol. Oh man he should kill that thing.

November 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterArlene Marie

That last one is actually an historical cake. That's a Plague Mask. No, really. Honest.

November 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

GO RAVENS!!!

Ahem. Sometimes I wonder why no one teaches bakers the frozen buttercream transfer technique. Then again, if they did, this site would have a lot fewer submissions and that would be sad.

November 5, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrisforrose

The last one looks like a Spy vs. Spy character.

November 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMichele

@risforrose

I'd think it's because frozen transfer require taking an actual art class to get practice doing. Admittedly it's the decorating equivalent of painting by numbers so all that it takes is a little effort. It's how I made the face on a Creeper cake I made a while back.

November 5, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterIsolder74

@ Jenny, I totally saw the kind of thing that you did with the UK logo, only I couldn't put words to it. Thanks for saving me the head-scratching.

@ Isolder74 and risforrose -- thanks for mentioning the frozen buttercream transfer technique. I saw a couple of reasonably good videos about it. It wasn't taught while I did classwork for my Baking and Pastry Arts Associates degree (they stuck mostly with classical techniques), but I can see how it could come in very handy. I think the examples I saw used American (crusting) buttercream, but I'd imagine it could be made with Italian or Swiss Meringue Buttercream, but it may be trickier to get the surface of the transfer that will stick to the cake as smooth as possible (you probably need to get a texture between hard and too soft and be ready to pop it back in the cold if it gets too soft),

Finally, @ TLC -- Hurrah for the exceptional work on that logo for Bellevue East, NE. {BTW, I lived in Papillion, NE for 3.5 years that I flew out of Offutt AFB -- some of the nicest people I've ever met lived in that area.)

November 7, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMary Kay

As a UK alum and a hardcore fan of the UK men's basketball team, I will never not find the UK wreck hilarious. If I had the money and my mother's permission, I would've totally commissioned the wreck to celebrate my graduation. (It helps that 90% of my family are fans of our rival school and have as wacky a sense of humor as I do)
