What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Fantastic Sweets And Where To Find Them

Have you seen Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them yet? If so, LUCKY! ...and no spoilers, if you please. John and I are planning to see it this Wednesday, so while I count down the days, let look at some of the more delicious Fantastic Beasts out there:

(By CakeCentral member Janice76)

Heck yeah, I'm starting with a dragon! Know why? 'Cuz dragons are SO HOT right now.
[ba dum CHA]

Also, I'm loving the way that cake board is cut.

I think we can all agree the Merpeople from the Potter films were kind of terrifying, but this stained glass version - complete with Harry's golden egg! - is simply stunning:

Since I haven't seen Fantastic Beasts yet I don't actually know which creatures are in it... but fingers crossed there's a Jackalope in a bowtie:

(By Sideserf Cake Studio)

JACKALOPE IN A BOWTIE, you guys. Yesss.

Or maybe a giant squid?

(By Crazy sweets)

Just because these actually exist doesn't make them any less fantastic. Am I right?

I'm putting another mermaid in here, and you can't stop me:

(By Sweet Love Cake Couture)

That shimmery purple tail! Ah! Plus her starfish friends are the cutest.

And while I'm repeating myself:

(By Margie Carter Cake World)

Hot.

(For real, though, look closely at those wings. They're translucent! THIS IS AMAZING.)

And speaking of firey creatures, here's the ultimate self-starter:

(By Raewyn Read Cake Design)

Fawkes!

(John and I are throwing a Harry Potter Christmas party next month, and I SO want a Fawkes like this for the dining room. If it helps, John, sweetie, ours doesn't have to be edible. :D)

Here's my co-writer Sharyn's favorite: Hippocampi!

(By Steel Penny Cakes)

Easy to see why; that stained glass design is jaw-dropping, and look at the watercolor blending in the tails!

One more on my wish list of Potter pets:

(By Über Angel Cakes and Events)

The Monster Book of Monsters!
It's hard enough to make one of these out of fake fur and clay - can you believe this one is actually dessert? So much talent.

Ooh, this is fun: a bunch of bakers got together to make a Fantastic Beasts collection of cakes, so here's one creature I CAN tell you is in the movie:

(From Fantastic Beasts Of Birthday Mischief, by CakesDecor member Stacked)

It's called a Firecrab, and isn't it pretty?

We couldn't find any Pygmy Puff cakes, so instead, how about a Geode Fairy?

(By Tourtes Georgias)

Hnnng. So. Pretty. The hair is what really makes it; love that flow.

And finally, let's end with MY personal favorite:

(By Kara's Couture Cakes)

The troll.

Bahahah! It's the face, you guys. I LOVE THAT FACE.

Happy Sunday!

Those are all amazing and awesome :O, but the gold egg cake and the monster book cake should not be eaten, they should be preserved.

That squid defies gravity. How do they get it to stand up like that? Loved the details on the Hippoampi and Geode Fairy - wow.

I would hug that octopus cake and get frosting all over me. So awesome!

Jen, I love this blog and I have and will be following it forever

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJjanewtyh

What does it say that you know all the fictitious creatures, but you can't tell an octopus from a squid?

It's my daughter, it's my daughter!! With her finger up her nose! lol. Not really. My daughter doesn't look like a troll. but she does have her finger up her nose too often...

Love you! (But it's a Pygmy Puff)

I'm going with Sharyn on this one, that cake is sublime.

My kid was doing a troll imitation (face AND nose picking, lucky me) right beside me as we looked at these amazing cakes. Happy Sunday, and may you find all the boogers you're looking for.

Oooh! Do I have to pick just one? How about the...no, not that one! Maybe...ah, may I change my mind? OK, I pick the crab! Yes...or maybe the troll.

The Fire crab!!!!!

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

We saw the movie last night. We heard some guy snoring through the whole thing. Its ok, I coughed and sneezed a lot myself....great movie!

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJ'NaeNae

The Firecrab reminds me of the Scintillating Jeweled Scuttling Crabs of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe!

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

Oooh, the geode mermaid. So pretty!

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJenn

Amazing cakes! I love the way that that octopus (NOT a squid, but who's counting) just seems to float...

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJames

The first 'dragon' is worrying. For a start, it has no back legs, so it's not a dragon, it's a wyvern (with extra heads). But mainly, its silly little wings are right at the back, so it wouldn't even glide, it would just crash head first. Flying monsters do need a tiny bit of physical plausibility.

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTachybaptus

Laughed out loud when I saw the troll. The rest of them are lovely.

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

I'm such a sucker for cute, those peeking starfish are hitting every one of my squee buttons.

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAngelaS

Amazing cakes! :) That troll SO needs to be a plushie!

November 20, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

What beautiful creations! Don't know if I'd have the heart to destroy them by eating them, though!

November 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

I actually saw a Fawks plushie at Universal Florida at their HP area. You can also order it online and a Pygmy Puff. lol I'm seeing the movie Thursday.

Arrgh! You are having a Harry Potter themed Christmas party!?!? Add this to the many reasons I wish we knew each other in person and were best friends!!! I would totally drive from Jacksonville for that! :)

November 22, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLisa C.

Nobody can ever ever EVER be allowed to eat that geode fairy cake. It has to be AGAINST THE LAW. It must be eternally preserved. Maybe at the center of a huge diamond. :)

For your Harry Potter Christmas party, I present my recipe for Butterbeer.
as you probably know, trawling the internet, that most butterbeer recipes involve either cream or icecream or marshmallow fluff to get the the foam - which just shows they know as much about cocktails as a flobberworm does about the composition of the Moons of Jupiter.
2 measures cooled chai tea with (opt) tsp of brown sugar/ maple syrup dissolved.
pinch of salt
1 measure vanilla gallianos; cinnamon vodka
2 measures butterscotch schnapps
(beer/gingerbeer enough to fill whatever size goblet you're using)
1 egg white.
shake/ whisk vigorously until egg white is thick and fluffy.
pour/ scrape into goblet

Stay after school and write 100 times: "An octopus is not a squid." An octopus is not a squid." "An octopus is not a squid."
