What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Geek Chic Wedding Cakes

This weekend John and I are at Dragon Con, the massive nerd-fest nirvana of all things glorious and geeky. It's awesome. So like every year, let's celebrate with glorious and geeky cakes!

I thought I'd focus on weddings this year - just to show you guys that geeky elegance IS possible.

(Baker not listed, photo by Trevor & Allison Photography)

Like so!

Check it out; it's the Bruce Wayne of wedding cakes. Hee.

I'm seeing a lot of split-cake wedding designs lately, and I gotta say: I APPROVE. Some call them a compromise, but really they're just a great way to show your formal and fun sides.

Here's one for you Whovians:

(By The Giant Cupcake Shop)

"DE-CO-RATE!"

And this one was crazy popular when I posted it on Facebook the other week; apparently you guys love your hidden super heroes!

(By Tier By Tier)

Formal in the front, super hero party in the back!

Ok, enough split designs - let's move on to the wholly geeky:

(By Sweet Element, now closed)

Gotta say, the idea of a Hunger Games-themed wedding cake makes me grin. So long as there are no battles to the death, of course. ;)

And while we're talking questionable wedding examples, how about Game of Thrones?

(By The Cake Zone, featured here)

That scaled "armor" is gorgeous, and the sword topper just works, am I right? Love it.

And now, the most sophisticated geeky groom's cake of all time:

(By Kickshaw Cakes)

That's gold leaf on the silhouette! Stunning.

You guys know my weakness for steampunk, so indulge me on this one:

(By Ciccio Cakes for Steampunk Sugar Geeks)

It's a steampunk oven cake! Wha whaaaa?? SO COOL.

I was especially delighted by this:

See that oven heat gauge? That's from my DIY steampunk gauge post over on Epbot! John and I made the graphic for our own steampunk oven prop... which we never finished. Heh. Anyway, so chuffed to see it on this masterpiece.

One more steampunk beauty:

(By High Five Cakes)

Loooove how all the gears are bursting out the side! Also digging the leather texture up top, and those sweet couple silhouettes framed in the portholes.

I'm a big fan of the white-on-white geek designs: you can "hide" all KINDS of fun stuff this way:

(By The Butter End Bakery)

Ok, first: THAT TOPPER. A Wampa (in a bow tie! squee!) with a Taun-Taun? HA! Heck yeah. And then the ships and AT-AT tucked in with the flowers? Brilliant.

Here's a completely different take on the "split" designs:

(By Divine Cakes)

Bursting with geeky goodness! Yes! (How many fandoms can you count?)

And finally, for my fellow Diz Geeks:

(By Walt Disney World's bakers)

Helloooo, drama! I've never seen Cindy's castle done in black and white like this!

And for those of you about to remark that there are no dragons in Fantasyland - anyone remember the time a fire-breathing dragon flew over a press event for New Fantasyland? So bummed that didn't become a regular thing.

The back view:

Those lacy wings! Ah!

Happy Sunday, everyone!

Oh, I'm in geek heaven! If I had to choose one, I'd go with the Game of Thrones cake, just because... skweee!
But they are all delightfully geek-gasm inducing. Thanks!

"I only work in black. Or very dark grey."

That aside, I sorta wish our wedding cake had been this cool. But we were young & broke & lucky just to have a cake. Maybe at our golden...

That Wampa cake is the most amazing thing I have ever seen on the internets. And I have seem some stuff, let me tell you. I love the look of adoration on the female Taun Taun and if there were a gentleman Wampa next to me wearing a bow tie, I assure you I would have the same look! He is so handsome! Love all the details, but those Wampas totally win!

I love the GoT wedding cake! It's so gorgeous! But all I could really think of when I saw it was how very badly most weddings in that franchise end up. Wonder if the colors for the wedding were red or purple, hahaha!

I had a hard time picking a favorite. Or favorites. That "hidden" comic geek cake you posted earlier was probably the very best half-n-half wedding cake I've ever seen ..... until I saw the second to the last cake. Wow! So much geekiness it made me dizzy. My husband and I could have totally had that cake (with slight modifications) for our wedding. If only he liked cake. And we hadn't eloped. I also really love how the gears pop out of that steampunk one. Thanks Jen -- these were awesome.

I was voting for Game of Thrones all the way--until we got to the dragon. Dragons win every time.

Awesome, but where's the Harry Potter wedding cake?

September 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMara

Oh Mara, I was just thinking the same thing. Are there any Harry Potter wedding cakes?

September 6, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJulia S

SQUEEEEEE! *thud*

Nobody's going to take a stab at the " all the geek" cake? Okay, I'll start us off:

Star Trek
Doctor Who
Batman
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings? (Looks like it might have Elvish writing on it, hard to tell.)
Harry Potter? (Kind of looks like the back end of Buckbuck , or maybe an owl?)

I believe the Disney cake is Sleeping Beauty's castle....Maleficent turned into a dragon preventng prince Philip from breaking through the brambles to kiss Sleeping Beauty!!! Looks like her castle too, with all the flags and such... Amiright?!?!

Dragons....heck, yeah! Disneyland, Scotland, Wales, Pern (my favorites), GoT, and I guess even from The Inheritance Cycle (not my favorite, but hey - dragons are dragons!!) my curio cabinet, on little kids at Halloween - I'll take 'em anywhere, any time!
By the way, there is the dragon from Fantasia that opens Fantasmic in Disneyland, CA - isn't there? Or am I remembering something different?

Love these beauties, thank you for sharing. Love this site, cracks me up daily - well, your quips and puns and wordplay are really my favorite thing, because I actually love words more than I love cake - which is not at all - I know, my bad. Give me pie any day over cake....

One day I will get to DragonCon - on my bucket list! Next time you make it out to San Diego for ComicCon International, you and John are welcome to room at my house (kinda out of the way in Poway - North County - but hey, it's a pretty cool little city out here in the 'burbs!)

My husband wants to know if the offspring of a Wampa and a Taun-Taun is a Waun-Taun?

September 7, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCristina

OK, on the ALL THE FANDOMS cake,

I agree with previous poster, there's obviously
Star Wars - R2D2
Doctor Who - TARDIS
Star Trek - Enterprise
LOTR - The One Ring
Batman - Bat Signal

I will add Firefly, as I see Serenity flying out just to the left of the TARDIS.
I can't see the banners clearly, but it looks like the one down front is a Game of Thrones style House Tully banner maybe? The bird and crescent moon one looks like House Arryn, so I surmise the others may also be Game of Thrones?

The sword is hard to place, as there are SO many things it could be. Overall, the level of skill and detail in this is utterly impressive!

Ok, while my personal favorite (gorgeous), I have to comment on the Hunger Games cake. Obviously, the fight to the death comes AFTER the wedding. Duh.

September 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Paper

I would like to think of the last cake as the Gringott's dragon taking a field trip to the Magic Kingdom. And that makes me super happy.

September 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

There is a dragon living under the castle at Disneyland Paris!

September 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

called my 10 year over to see these amazing cakes and he pointed out the batman is a dc comic, and spidermand and ironman are marvel comics. to geeky for his own good.

as far as the dragon, malifecent still transforms in the fantasmic show towards the middle of it.

still need some harry potter though

Questionable wedding example or not, that Game of Thrones cake is gorgeous. (And at least it's not red!)

There's something about that Steampunk Stove that just makes me want to pet it and take it home. =-)

I looked at the "split" fandom cake and thought, "I love it! But it needs a dragon..." Then I scrolled down, and said "Ah! There it is!" =-)

These are all so awesome I couldn't pick a favorite. So beautiful! Wonderful craftsmanship - and delicious to boot I bet!

September 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMaryO1230

Wasnt "The Reluctant Dragon "-- 1941 and Elliot from "Pete's Dragon" - 1977....Both Disney films.

*Squeal*

The steampunk one with the gears down the side, from High Five Cakes is by my wonderful and disgustingly talented friend Sarah Myers!
I'm thrilled to see her work on Sunday Sweets :)
