Seriously, isn't that chocolate lake perfect? With the ripples? And the boat! And the tiny Wonka bars! I like how even the tiers look like they're seeping chocolate between the layers. It's genius, I say. GENIUS.
So here's to you, moms, and all the times you read "just one more" before bedtime. Thanks for teaching us to love reading, great stories, and sometimes even funny voices. :)

So beautiful! Especially after the baby shower horrors. (still shaking from that plastic-wrapped butchered baby) So many pretty colors and sweet images! (They cut off its *hand*!) I especially like the last one because CHOCOLATE!
So gorgeous. There is even a tiny oompah loompah (is that how you spell it?) in the boat. Too cute. Makes me want to read to my girls again, even though they are 26 & 23!
Gosh, Jen, you are as much a grammar crank as I am; however, in writing about the C&TCF shot, you used "their" in place of "they're". I do that sometimes too. Happens when the brain is working faster than the fingers. Love your site!!!

Butterfly wings are UPSIDE DOWN! I know Eric Carle got it wrong, but why let such a profound anatomical error continue and be compounded into the future. ;-)
Loving the Poky Little Puppy cake and the great memories of Little Golden Books, both when I was a kid and when my son was little. I want that puppy!
This brings back so many memories of reading to my girls. I love books and cakes that look like books.
I can't believe that it's been that many years since Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was published!! I love that book so much, and I loved the movie with Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka (1971); he was the perfect person for the part!
One of the benefits of "special" kids is that they want you to be "Mommy" much longer than most kids do. (Also a detriment some days...) That means that, despite the fact that she's 12, I STILL am asked to read a "story." But since they're older, we can read big books that go on for many nights. I have read all 7 of the Narnia series, "King Of The Wind", & one or two Magic Treehouse books. We are currently deep in the Inkheart trilogy, with plans to read the Wrinkle In Time quintet afterwards.
(& yes, I do funny voices. Although a lot of the animal characters in Narnia ended up sounding the same by the end of the series. I only have so many "Beaver", "Faun", "Wolf", "Rat" etc voices on tap. :/ )
I really, really hope that last one is chocolate cake with chocolate Ganache inside!
Is the Velveteen Rabbit -- the actual rabbit in the box -- sugar? It looks so like real fabric, with seams and draped ears, that I can't believe that it isn't that.
The bird in the tree in the Secret Garden cake should be a robin (a small European one, of course), though it is unkind to quibble at a well executed cake. In the book it t is a robin that leads the way to the hidden garden door. Robins have a role in folklore as guides to the souls of the living and the dead.
Thanks for another Sunday Sweets full of beautiful cakes, and happy Mother's Day, Jen! Doesn't matter that you haven't squeezed a tiny human out of your hoohah; you are a mother nonetheless.

You lead by example, you open eyes to the possibilities, you teach new things, you champion the underdog, you fight for what's right, and you always know exactly what to say and exactly what to leave unsaid.
You're a perfect role model, not just for kids but for everyone, and you're a much better mom than most of the mothers I know (including me). You're doing everything right. I'm a bit older than you, but when/if I grow up, I hope to be exactly like you!
One of my favorite memories is my dad reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to me when I was little. That cake has now made it into my top ten of favorite sweets.
P.S. - I know it's Mother's Day and I mention my dad, but it was something like that, plus my mom taking me to the library A LOT that gave me my love for reading.

Just, awwww, cute puppies with butterflies, and ohhhh, velveteen rabbits with ABC blocks. So sweet. So appropriate. So edible.

The Charlotte's Web baker is a genius! They even made Templeton look not disgusting. I love Templeton, especially his Paul Lynde voice in the film!

These are too sweet! Makes me miss my mom (and dad), all the stories and Little Golden Books.
I remember when I was little and we lived in the mountains, I had left my copy of Tuggy the Tugboat in a restaurant down the hill. I was pretty upset, as he and I were very close. My mom sent my dad back out in the rain to drive down the mountain and back to the restaurant. The restaurant couldn't find the book, so my mom went out early the next morning, driving down to the city to buy another copy when the bookstore opened.
Yes, I do credit my folks with my almost insatiable love of the printed word. Thanks for the reminder on this Mothers' Day (and my birthday too).

That Willy Wonka cake is made all the better by the knowledge that on any other day of the week, if that cake showed up on here, the chocolate would look like something else coming out of a pipe. Good job baker!!

I love all the cakes you post but since this site is called 'Cake Wrecks' I can't help but think these are the 'Before' cakes in your "What I wanted...what I got" section of the site. Those cakes are too beautiful.
