What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets Hops To It

Happy Easter, everyone!

Is your basket overflowing with candy eggs today? Because here's a Sweet idea:

(By The Gunny Sack)

Love those colors!

Or perhaps you like your cake with a little more character:

(By Montreal Confections, featured here)

I know bunny butt cakes are popular, but I gotta say, I prefer this end. Lookit dat cute lil' nose.

And this one made me grin:

(By Yummy-Mummy Cake Creations)

:D

As you might imagine, I tend to have a soft spot for cakey carrots:

(By Fantasticakes Cecile Crabot)

And how fun is this design? Really diggin' all the little details, like the snail on the sign and that little green worm sticking out the side.

Sometimes a Sweet can be as simple as these perfectly-piped cookies:

(By Kava Dolce)

Those eyes, ha! I'm sure I'd mess 'em up, but they make me want to break out the royal icing.

Cookie art has come a long way, too; check out these amazing 3D cookie baskets:

(By Julia Usher)

Even the patterns are edible; they're printed frosting sheets.
(It's nice to see edible ink being used for GOOD and not wrecks, huh?)

Oooh, here comes another carrot!

(By My Cake School - hit the link for tutorial)

Well, it's no carrot jockey rocket, but it'll do. ;) And you've gotta love the Peep riders!

I almost didn't believe this next egg was cake; it's too perfect:

(By Made With Love)

Over on her site there's a companion egg cake with a slice out, though, and there are 4 or 5 layers in there! Swooning over the soft colors and that perfect flower swag.

More soft pastels and sweetness:

(By Rouvelee's Creations)

And teensy carrots! Yes!

And finally, a gracefully chic Lady Easter Bunny:

(Made for Project Hof van Saksen voor Ronald McDonald Huis)

Isn't she gorgeous? And so unique, like an art doll sculpt! Love.

Hope you all have a beautiful Easter Sunday!

Dolle Drentse Dagen seems to be a festival in Drente in the Netherlands. Over at De Leukste Taarten (The Nicest Cakes) is a post from June of last year about the (a?) winning cake. Also a large gallery of beautiful Easter cakes from last year.

They are all so beautiful, how can anyone stand to cut into them?

Happy Easter right back to YOU-all!
The egg with chicken feet reminded me of an old Foghorn Leghorn cartoon in which F.L. hatches an -I SAY- hatches himself an egg. These historical gems are on the hysterical channel, under youtube...(also filed under "some folks never grow up, or do it under protest").

Thank you so much for sharing my Tulip and Lilac Easter Egg cake.

Yes it was cake, it was five layers of coffee cake with vanilla buttercream and chocolate ganache. Covered in ganache and then sugarpaste. I'm so glad that you like it.

That last cake reminds me of Peter Rabbit's mother from the Beatrix Potter stories. I had a collection of those stories as a kid with the old-timey illustrations. Looks like she stepped right from the pages!

To add to what Alexa has already found, I found this gallery which features the "Dolle Drentse Dagen" cake: http://www.deleukstetaarten.nl/galerij/themawinnaars?p=2 (second row, second from the right)

Deleukstetaarten is a forum for Dutch-speaking home bakers who share their creations and tips. This particular cake was theI can't find the original photo's or any other reference to who the team behind "Dolle Drentse Dagen" (Crazy Drente Days, Drente is a province in the Netherlands) is. I think most of the people on these forums aren't professional bakers.

Wow -- @Pamela McCaffrey -- that is simply stunning -- and when I clicked over, found the ones with roses and lilac, and lovely floral garland. They truly took my breath away!

I will never believe that anyone was actually able to bring themselves to cut into that Lady Easter Bunny cake.

Is it possible that the Lady Easter Bunny cake was inspired by this book?http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0395185572?ie=UTF8&at=&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

Pamela, that cake is one of the best I've seen in a very long time, creative, perfectly executed, and simply elegant. I find many of the Sunday Sweets cakes a bit over the top, though impeccably

Pamela, that cake is one of the best I've seen in a very long time, creative, perfectly executed, and simply elegant. I find many of the Sunday Sweets cakes a bit over the top, though impeccably made. Yours shows tth value of clarity and restraint. I am looking forward to seeing your other work.

The egg cakes from Made With Love would be a tasteful way to celebrate a baby shower! How sweet!

Thank you Gingersnap for your lovely comment and for your novel idea, it would make a change wouldn't it.

Hi all, Happy New Year
I was just point out by someone that our Lady Bunny cake was featured here. Thank you so much.

Dolle Drentse Dagen is not an existing event in The Netherlands. It was just the name we gave to a funny and crazy weekend away with 10 baking girls. With 10 bakers we spent a weekend in a luxurious holiday home which had a very well equiped kitchen.
Dolle drentse dagen means: funny/crazy/wild days at Drenthe (province in Holland). We had a great weekend.

We decided to make something cool during this weekend since we had that cool kitchen. We made 3 large Easter Cakes which we donated to the Ronald McDonald Foundation. The homes where families can stay when one of their children is in hospital.

Lady Bunny is one of them and is almost entirely made by one of the bakers, Bianca. She used to own 'Taart by Bianca'. So it is not me who did this entire cake (on this one I did the skirt :-)) but shape and head were all done by Bianca.

The group was partly professional bakers, partly hobby.

Greetings from Holland!
Henriette
