What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets... In... SPAAAACE!

Today is Space Exploration Day, so these stellar Sweets are dedicated to everyone who reaches for the stars... and then feels a bit peckish.

(By Anna Vasilyeva)

Excited? Why, this astronaut is over the moon!

(By Cake Studio Rouge)

Gorgeous shading, and that number constellation? BRILLIANT.

So it turns out making a perfect globe out of cake is just a little difficult.

By which I mean you have to be a magician with an advanced degree in structural engineering.

But, BEHOLD!

(Submitted By Jennifer W. Baker unknown. Anyone know?)

MAGIC!!
Or talent. You know, one or the other.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that fabulous Jupiter cake that went viral a while back. It's even pretty INSIDE:

(By Cakecrumbs, which has a Youtube tutorial here)

And now, the cutest little space kid and rocket ship EVAH:

(By Viva La Cake)

Why does the astronaut have little doggie ears?* I don't know. BUT I LOVE THEM. And that rocket!
Ack! I want a miniature version on a necklace, stat.

[*Apparently those are ponytails. Which I guess makes a LITTLE more sense than doggie ears. ;)]

Also digging this steampunk style ship:

(By Sugarrealm)

Check out all the rivets!

Not a great picture, but I've always loved this alien abduction cake:

(By Leigh Henderson)

It reminds me of those cow abduction lamps. Ha! Remember those?
Anyway, the plexiglass pillar is genius, and there's even an alien inside one of the windows!

I'm sure we all remember how a space shuttle cake can go very, very wrong, so I'm pleased as punch to see a beauty like this:

(By Scrumptious Cakes)

There's a tiny solar system on the middle tier, and constellations cover the bottom. Lovely!

One more the NASA buffs:

(By Cake Central user Careyl)

Best rocket cake I've seen - it looks like a model!

Speaking of which, my friend Jason of Red Rocket Farm paints robots and - you guessed it - the CUTEST red rockets. So naturally, this reminded me of him:

(By Sweet Disposition Cakes)

That's for you, Jason & Teeter. (Now, paint me more rockets, dangit!)

Who says a space cake needs fancy sculpting and modeling skills? Sometimes all you need is an airbrush and a tank load of talent:

(By Merely Sweets)

Great galloping galaxies! Now THAT is a wedding cake.

And finally, it's only fitting that I end with a space cake that defies gravity:

(By Erin Eason)

WOWZA.

Happy Sunday, everyone! Here's hoping your weekend has been out of this world.

I want the aliens on the last cake as squishy plushies :D and the shuttle cake is amazing :D

I don't think those are doggy ears on Reagan's cake, I think they're pigtails. :)

[Editor's note- Hi Melanie! I think you're right. Thanks for the heads up! -john (thoJ)]

I'm almost positive that the last cake was made by someone for the 2013 Washington State Sugar Artists Show. I messaged the person I think made it. Hopefully she'll come on and claim it!

Came here to say toddler ponytails as well, so I'll second Melanie E.'s post.

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

Not doggie ears. The cake is for a little girl, that astronaut is her, with her pigtails sticking out.

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLeelz

I have also always seen Reagan's "doggie ears" as little girl pigtails. ADORABLE either way. :)

Cakes number 2, 5, and 11 each need a little TARDIS and they'd be perfect.

Wow! These are really out of this world! Love 'em! (And so appropriate for today's 45th anniversary of man's first steps on the moon...)

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

That last cake is the best use of the topsy turvy style that I have ever seen, hands down! Love it!

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

The alien on the right at the bottom of the last cake is holding a teeny ice cream cone! Ack, how adorable! What a gorgeous collection of cakes. And I cannot BELIEVE it was 45 years ago that I sat there (as a teenager) watching Neil step fuzzily onto the moon on our black-and-white TV. Where does the time fly to so fast, anyway?

Love all the cakes, makes me want to face my fear of death by suffocation and having my insides burst out... oh who am i kidding, i'd rather just eat space-themed cake! However, in my house, growing up, those were doggie ears. A pony tail was one in the back. Doggie ears were one on each side and pigtails were one braid on each side. Although now that i'm a "grown up" when i see little girls with cute, short doggie ears, i think of wing nuts. Either way, so adorable (especially since in 0 gravity, they'd probably stick up like horns)!

A friend text me this morning and said she saw my cake on your site. The last cake is mine! Thanks so much for the shout out. Super excited about it!

That red rocket looks kind of like the rocket in "A Grand Day Out"...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayM68-4EioY

Ermagerd, that wedding cake is just GORGEOUS! And I love the moon on the last cake -so cute!

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterE. Anne

How or earth did they do that last cake? That will keep me up all night trying to figure it out.

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLady Anne

The last cake was NOT made by the person being given credit. It was made by Erin Eason, who is a friend of ours. She did make it for the 2013 WA state Sugar Artists Show, and actually worked on part of it at our shop. Please change the credit. She worked really hard on that cake and CJ whoeversoever should not be taking credit for someone else's work.

THANKS, Jen!!!!

[Editor's note- Thanks for the heads up. I'm changing it now. john (thoJ)]

I love that last cake. Every bit of it is amazing!
BTW, when I was little and my mom put my hair in twin side ponytails we always called them "dog ears" instead of pony tails because that is what they look like...dog ears.

Each one of these cakes is even more amazing than the last. The Earth and Jupiter cakes are so cool and I am in awe of the airbrushing skills of whomever decorated that galaxy cake. I adore galaxy print on anything but I never would have thought to look for it on a cake before. ^_^

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTifa

When my girls were little, we called that kind of pony tails 'doggie ears', so it made sense to me either way! ;-)

July 20, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCathy W.

That first astronaut is totally doing the gangnam style.
