What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Art Nouveau

After our Art Deco feature, we figured it was high time for some Art Nouveau goodness!

(By Anna Taart)

Or more like art nou-WOAH, am I right?

I'm a huge fan of this style, so it's fun to see it translated so beautifully onto cake.

(By Comper Cakes)

Yeah, I'd hit that.

(With a fork.)

No one's ever asked me to describe art nouveau in four words or less, but if they did, I'd say it's "in-your-face elegance." This style is meant to be noticed, dahling!

(By Rosebud Cakes)

See? No shrinking violets here. There's pretty stuff up top, fancy things down low, and the middle looks like it's made out of sugar-coated dreams. Everywhere you look, BAM! Gorgeousness.

Not that it can't be understated, too.

(By Nevie-Pie Cakes)

Sweet and simple, with a suggestion of stained glass.

Or if you prefer your stained-glass cakes on the other end of the spectrum...

(By La Bella Torta)

[Insert angelic hallelujah chorus here]

I bet you could look up 'art nouveau cake' in the dictionary and find this picture, it's so perfect:

(By Elegantly Iced)

Or if not the dictionary, then Google for sure.

This next one's as pretty as Boston in the Fall*:

(By Lindy Smith)

Plus the topper reminds me of the fiber-optic lamp my grandma had in her basement. BONUS.

[*No, I've never been to Boston in the Fall - but I hear it's awesome.]

I can't decide which I like better: the dragonfly or the "beading" on the bottom tier:

(By Tortenherz)

See my dilemma? So fantastic!

And I'd have a hard time stopping myself from breaking off this topper and making a run for it:

(By WOW Cakes)

Fun fact: the technique used to make that topper is sometimes called a 'run-out', so it's pretty much asking to be kidnapped anyway, right? Right.

You guys. This cake. I can't even. I just ... WOW.

(By Cakes By Beatriz, more details shots here)

It's spectacular! Look at the precision! The perfection! The intricate details in the stained glass. The relief designs on the side. I have no words. (Unless ooooh, ahh, and woah count.)

And finally, if art nouveau St. Patrick's Day were a thing, (and why not?!) then I have just the cake for it:

(By The Cake Whisperer)

Gorgeous greens, glittering gold - it's magically delicious!

Happy Sunday, everyone! And as always, check out our Sunday Sweets Directory if you want to see which bakers in your area have been featured here on Sweets!

My favorite is for the 70th birthday.

I do beaded cross-stitch, and the one with the "beadds" on the botton tier made me gasp. These are all stunning.

#4 & #6; done in the style of Charles Rennie MacIntosh, my all time favourite Art Nouveau artist! WOW!

Beautiful cakes and thanks for the Veggie Tales reference. I've never been to Boston in the fall either, but I've been to Washington DC in the fall and it isn't to far off from that cake!

Very nice. Isn't no. 7 a Clarice Cliff cake? It looks like it, in which case it would have fitted better in the Art Deco post. Gorgeous whatever it is.

I assume you said "darling" in an Edna Mode voice.

Holy cannoli! These are fabulous! I love the dragonfly -- and the beads. Beatriz's cake is phenomenal. "Wow" is right, Jen. I followed the link for the other pictures and it was totally worth it. The little fountains and the mosaic are my favorite parts. Plus, that woman has some over-the-top talent when it comes to piping. I am in awe.

Loe these cakes! Especially the dragonfly one!

I *HAVE* been to Boston in the Fall. But I've never been to Greenland and I've never been to Denver and I've never buried treasure in St Louie or St Paul. I've also never bathed in yogurt and I really don't look good in leggings.

And thank you for starting my day off with a smile :)

Jen-
Go check out the pages at Elegantly Iced. There is a Tardis box: http://elegantlyiced.com/gallery.html?gid=196
I loved these cakes, but really enjoyed seeing all the cakes on the Elegantly Iced webpage. And she's local (NYC area.) I may actually order a cake fromher.

Braveau! Braveau!

I love art nouveau and I love cake. These are all great, but the dragonfly wins it for me.

Art Nouveau is defined as 'from nature' and it is my favourite style , Charles Rennie MacIntosh was an architect and designer, it was his wife, Margaret McDonald who designed the ubiquitous rose motif and her artworks used gesso and raised work and is sadly underated.

The dragonfly. Wings down.

And thank you, all of you, who gave support and hugs for Youngest and I. Mercifully, she is doing much better on the new treatment, though she still has some way to go. We used to call her our Candy Girl, because she was so sweet she could give you diabetes. Looks like Candy Girl is coming back.

My favorite is the first cake. Stunning.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermelanie sparkles

These are simply stunning. It's difficult to comprehend the level of artistic skill required to create such awe-inspiring works of art on CAKE. Unbelievable.

My favorite is the beaded one. It reminds me of a dress my grandmother used to wear.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarzipan

So pretty. Loved the stained glass ones.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

BEYOND AWESOME! I don't know how anyone could cut into these cakes, they are SO beautiful.

My personal favs are the dragonfly and the one with the sweet peas by Rosebud Cakes - Just amazing. But that doesn't take anything away from the rest of these - they're all works of art.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

I normally don't post comments, but today I just had to. Art Nouveau is my favorite style, and these cakes are perfect representations. I can't imagine the time and effort involved in creating these beauties.

Thanks for this page.

Somehow, the 70 cake looks like clipart. I think it's the black lines around the edges.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLani

These cakes are gorgeous! And since my birthday IS St. Patrick's Day, anyone want to make me that last cake? It doesn't have to be that big, two tiers would be fine with me. Please? It's been at least ten years, probably longer, since I've gotten cake for my birthday, everyone conveniently forgets. :(

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZombiEdward

You just won some kind of existential Jen(n?) prize for sneaking a Veggie Tales reference into a post about art nouveau non-wrecks. How the heck could anyone be cooler?

BTW? Boston in the fall IS very nice.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJennwith2ns

@SaraCVT, so very glad to hear that your beautiful Candy Girl is getting better! That's more wonderful than all the cakes in the world.

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

Never been to Boston in the fall!
Are you a pirate who doesn't do anything?

March 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRikki

Love the dragonfly/beading cake.

I'd love to go to Boston in the fall; and I'm not too good a ping pong.

March 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHeloise

So beautiful. Maybe my favourite Sunday Sweets ever!! My two faves were the one with the dragonfly/beading, and the Rosebud cakes one (sugar-coated dreams........ that's spot on!) All gorgeous.

March 10, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterkAREN

Oooh, I like those first two so Mucha! (I can't believe no one else went there yet, lol)

Love Art Nouveau and these are stunning!

March 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarolyn
