Sunday Sweets: Toons From Our Childhood
March 23, 2014 I've been on a retro movie kick lately, and I gotta say, Explorers? The 80s flick about 3 kids who build a spaceship and go meet celebrity-impersonating aliens? TOTALLY HOLDS UP. Go watch it on Netflix, and tell me I'm wrong.
And while we're relishing in some sweet, sweet nostalgia, how 'bout the cartoons we grew up with? No, not Rugrats, you young whippersnappers - I'm talking real old school. Like Popeye:

Little known fact: Marvin's ray gun is named the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator, so when I made my first steampunk ray gun, I had a plaque made naming it the Illudium SP-36 Aether Sub-Modulator (SP for "steam powered," of course.)

Long-time Lurker, First time poster: I have to mention about the Pink Panther cake and the theme song. Turner Classic Movies had the first Pink Panther movie on last might and I still love that them song.
And I love all of these cakes and most of those cartoons (Cannot get into Rainbow Brite, more Looney Tunes!).
That look on Scrooge's face is just incredible.
Personally, Tom & Jerry was my jam, but all these other cakes are excellent.
Oh my goodness...Rose Petal Place! Now if you could find some Popple or Care Bears or old school My Little Pony? That would complete my 80's childhood.

Gorgeous cakes! And, you gotta love Popeye! Even though he predates my movie going by about 30 years, he was as strong as ever in the 50's. Other favorites include Tom & Jerry, Sylvester and Tweety Bird and Mr. Magoo. (and yes, I was humming the song....) Thanks for the memories.... "Th-th-th That's all, folks!"
I caught Popeye on re-runs ("What's a re-run?") so this post filled all my childhood memories. Except for The Snorks. But no one else remembers them.
The cartoon song stuck in my head from this post is "Road Runner, the Coyote's after you...Road Runner, if he catches you you're through!"
Popeye was my favorite! When I would get in trouble I would turn to my dad and say "I y'am what I y'am, and that's all that I y'am". Got me out of a spanking more than once!
Moondreamers was my favorite! I can't find anything on them anywhere.
All of these cakes are totally fantastic! The likeness of Scrooge McDuck and Pepe LePew are spot on. Really, really well done, love 'em! But I have to say that the Yogi and Boo Boo cake is my fav here...not that it was my favorite cartoon, but the sweet simplicity of it is just sublime. And the bunny made me squee. :)

Jen - OMG EXPLORERS. Talk about something no one remembers. I always loved the rat and had fantasies of building a voice keyboard for mine... Hello. I would like some cheese. Go.. to.. hell.
I heard rumor of there being a remake, and IMDB has a page for an "Explorers" for 2017, but not much info. Dun dun DUN.

On the Road Runner cake, that's not just a rope that snapped... it's a rope bridge, right? I can see the lines of the planks... and Wile E. has fallen off the bridge into the canyon. :)

I had a Monchichi stuffed animal, and it was the cutest thing ever! I've never see them listed on any retro list, though. HOPING I still have it somewhere, as well. :)
Oh! And as far as potential cute retro cartoon cakes go, in addition to Tom and Jerry, I would love to see Droopy or Chilly Willy... ha hee HACHOO! :)

I loved Rose Petal Place and Moondreamers! I had lots of stuff from them that I wish I would have kept for my girls. One thing that did get kept for some reason was the Moondreamers ship. It's still at my parents and played with quite often when my girls visit them.
So adorable. Love the Rainbow Brite cake and The Smurfs. The Yogi cake is adorable too.
I used to wonder why didn't Wile E. Coyote ("Genius.") didn't just go to a store and buy a chicken. He obviously had money...and where did THAT come from, anyway...? (Most wild animals are not independently wealthy. Perhaps the Endangered Species Fund?)

My era of Cartoons were those above but also "H. R. Puff-In-Stuff", "The Banana Splits", "Roger RamJet" , "Mr Magoo" and "The Archies". I think I learned to appreciate classical music thanks to Bugs Bunny and the early Looney Toons 'toons. I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle and I'm glad they have made a movie of "Sherman and Mr Peabody". (Cakes will flow!).
Kami: before my latest surgery, i went out and bought the complete Gummi Bears series on DVD, so i could watch it while i recuperated. the surgery before that, i bought the PeeWee's Playhouse series. (yeah, i know. i've had a few surgeries. you try getting to 57 without any surgeries.)
i remember Snorks, too. and Monchichis, although my kids didn't care much for them. and i loved all of the other cartoons represented. i spent a lot of time watching cartoons with my Dad, Wile E was his favorite. and he got me to eat spinach by saying it would make me strong, like Popeye. but it didn't.
I didn't think anyone else knew about Rose Petal Place! I loved it so much, but just figured it was something that got handed down from my cousins to me. Loved it.

Omg I had totally forgotten about Moon Dreamers! I had some toys from it, including the bear, which I loved. Sadly I don't remember what the cartoon was like. I'll have to see if I can find episodes anywhere.
I remember the snorks too! Now if there was a Jem cake to go with the movie that is in production right now for Jem and the Holograms! Anybody else remember them?!? SO EXCITED❗️

I'm so glad you had a cake with Scrooge MacDuck! My husband and I went to see the Hobbit a couple months ago and when they got to the scene where Bilbo sees the vast amount of gold I leaned over to my husband and whispered "This puts the Money Bin to shame, don't you think?" And for the rest of the movie all I could think of was how awesome it would be to be able to swim in all that gold! LOL

I love the Uncle Scrooge McDuck cake!! It reminds me of the commemorative figurines created from classic Carl Barks duck stories! That's my kind of cake! Except, I wouldn't want to eat it because it would be a work of art in itself. (Yes, the others were really cool too...but I'm a Disney Duck fan, so I have to stick with my ducks!) :)

BUT! One hit me with a whooper of a memory. That Rainbow Brite cake pulled up a memory of eating Fruit Loops that was so strong I could taste the cereal and smell the milk in the bowl.
The Popeye cake is amazing---but spinach leaves aren't shaped like that! Love the Rainbow Brite and Yogi Bear cakes (I have a friend whose two dogs are named "Yogi" and "Ranger".) My favorite cartoon was Rocky and Bullwinkle---looking forward to seeing the new movie (and cakes, eventually.)

Is my absolute favorite quote, and I use it so much that I can't believe no one has called me out for quoting a cartoon duck. But really - it's a great line.
Totally made my month to have you (and others) remember Rose Petal! Whenever I talk 80s cartoons with friends no one ever remembers Rose Petal for some reason. I'm so happy not to be alone! Everyone remembers my other favorites: Popples, Rainbow Bright. thunder cats, gummi bears, etc.
As I was starting in on this post, I thought to myself, 'there better be a Smurfs' cake. And there was!! Thank you thank you thank you! I love the little Azriel!! These cakes are all amazing!

Marvin's ray gun wasn't named Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator. His ray gun was actually just called a Disintegration Pistol. The name actually refers to a stick of regular dynamite, inserted into a large weapon he built to blow up the Earth (because it obstructs his view of Venus). The name is alternatively pronounced Illudium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator, depending on the episode.
Not trying to rain on your parade. I'm just a geek who felt the need to enlighten. It's still an awesome name for a steampunk weapon, though. :)
They could never produce Rose Petal Place these days. They would be accused of reinforcing gender stereotypes. And well....we just can't have that.

@Carla-I caught the original Pink Panther movie Saturday night, too-that was the first thing I thought of when I saw that cake(my husband and I were guessing how old that movie was-it predated us by two years......O.o!!)

On the Pepe Le Pew cake, can anyone work out what the recipient's name is? I get Gear__ or possibly Jear__ which doesn't go with any normally spelled name I can think of. Gearald? Jearrold? Gearen? Gears?
Love it! I'm a cartoon junkie, so this was right up my alley. And if you're on a classic 80's movie binge, don't forget to re-watch "Flight of the Navigator." It's genius!
