What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Toons From Our Childhood

I've been on a retro movie kick lately, and I gotta say, Explorers? The 80s flick about 3 kids who build a spaceship and go meet celebrity-impersonating aliens? TOTALLY HOLDS UP. Go watch it on Netflix, and tell me I'm wrong.

And while we're relishing in some sweet, sweet nostalgia, how 'bout the cartoons we grew up with? No, not Rugrats, you young whippersnappers - I'm talking real old school. Like Popeye:

(By Over The Top Cakes)

Granted, he's from a little before even my time, but I do remember you're supposed to squeeze spinach out of the can and swallow it in a single gulp.

I'm from more of the Looney Tunes era, so Marvin the Martian here is, like, THE COOLEST:

(By Yener's Cakes)

LOVE.

Little known fact: Marvin's ray gun is named the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator, so when I made my first steampunk ray gun, I had a plaque made naming it the Illudium SP-36 Aether Sub-Modulator (SP for "steam powered," of course.)

I know what you're thinking. And I take that as compliment.

MEEP MEEP!

(By Blake's Cakes, design by Debbie Brown)

The bubbly dust trail! The snapped rope! The only thing missing from this Road Runner diorama is an Acme product.

Are you ready to have a song stuck in your head without my saying a single word?

(By Cake Central member GRAMMASUE)

You're humming it now, aren't you? I KNEW IT.

Oh, and those guys on the side aren't printed; that's all handpiped - the technique is called Frozen Buttercream Transfer. Beautifully done, too!

"Hey there, Boo Boo! Who's ready for a pic-a-nic?"

(By Su-Yin)

Yogi is just unbearably cute. And the little bunny! Ack!

Speaking of cute, here's my latest find in my quest for the world's sweetest Rainbow Brite cake:

(By Sugar Mummy Cupcakes)

Now, if I ever find a cake for Rose Petal Place or Moon Dreamers, I may actually die.

(You 80s girls know what I'm taking about!)

Moseying on over to the town of Bedrock:

(By Le torte di Barbara)

Great, now THAT song is stuck in my head.

Anyone out there feeling a little blue?
Then here, this should help:

(By Dolce Mente Sheila)

Smurfin' fantastic, I say!

One of John's favorite sayings is "Work smarter, not harder."
Because you should always listen to the duck who swims in a vault full of gold coins:

(By Torte in Pasta di Zucchero Sugar Factory)

How great is this? Uncle Scrooge looks ready to whack us with his cane!

And from whacking to pecking:
(Just so you know, that segue worked better in my head.)

(By Alessandra Caldeira)

Woody Woodpecker!

Cannot even handle those adorable birds, and the lil' worm, and the mini cake made of cake. SO GOOD.

And finally, here's one for all the lovers out there:

(By Planet Cake)

And also the stalkers. And the skunks. And the loving stalker skunks.
MROWR.

(Those glasses! Hee!)

Happy Sunday, everyone! Let's go watch some cartoons. And as always, check out our Sunday Sweets Directory if you want to see which bakers in your area have been featured here on Sweets!

Only one thing wrong with the Flintstones cake: WHERE'S DINO? Dino was my favorite!
Love the Yogi Bear cake! So cute!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoxy Random

Long-time Lurker, First time poster: I have to mention about the Pink Panther cake and the theme song. Turner Classic Movies had the first Pink Panther movie on last might and I still love that them song.

And I love all of these cakes and most of those cartoons (Cannot get into Rainbow Brite, more Looney Tunes!).

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarla

That look on Scrooge's face is just incredible.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

Personally, Tom & Jerry was my jam, but all these other cakes are excellent.

Oh my goodness...Rose Petal Place! Now if you could find some Popple or Care Bears or old school My Little Pony? That would complete my 80's childhood.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

Squeee@ roadrunner one :D loved ducktails as a kid. Aww to the rest

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Gorgeous cakes! And, you gotta love Popeye! Even though he predates my movie going by about 30 years, he was as strong as ever in the 50's. Other favorites include Tom & Jerry, Sylvester and Tweety Bird and Mr. Magoo. (and yes, I was humming the song....) Thanks for the memories.... "Th-th-th That's all, folks!"

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

I caught Popeye on re-runs ("What's a re-run?") so this post filled all my childhood memories. Except for The Snorks. But no one else remembers them.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVioletRose

The cartoon song stuck in my head from this post is "Road Runner, the Coyote's after you...Road Runner, if he catches you you're through!"

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJoJo

Popeye was my favorite! When I would get in trouble I would turn to my dad and say "I y'am what I y'am, and that's all that I y'am". Got me out of a spanking more than once!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Moondreamers was my favorite! I can't find anything on them anywhere.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMuriah

All of these cakes are totally fantastic! The likeness of Scrooge McDuck and Pepe LePew are spot on. Really, really well done, love 'em! But I have to say that the Yogi and Boo Boo cake is my fav here...not that it was my favorite cartoon, but the sweet simplicity of it is just sublime. And the bunny made me squee. :)

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBonnieB

VioletRose - I remember The Snorks! But I know what you mean about no one else does.

Jen - OMG EXPLORERS. Talk about something no one remembers. I always loved the rat and had fantasies of building a voice keyboard for mine... Hello. I would like some cheese. Go.. to.. hell.
I heard rumor of there being a remake, and IMDB has a page for an "Explorers" for 2017, but not much info. Dun dun DUN.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTeri

Oh, Peppy le Pew! These are my childhood. My best friend could say, "Hey Boo. Boo, don't forget the pic-a-nic basket" better than anyone. Tom Terrific. Mighty Mouse. Foghorn Leghorn. Wow, what wonderful cakes. Thanks!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKnittedbooties

On the Road Runner cake, that's not just a rope that snapped... it's a rope bridge, right? I can see the lines of the planks... and Wile E. has fallen off the bridge into the canyon. :)

Not to wreck a sweet, but doesn't Popeye look constipated or am I the only one seeing that, lol?

And, oh my goodness, Pepe Le Pew in tighty-whities? Bahahahaha! :)

@Roxy Random, I was thinking "Good on them" for including Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm, but you're right! Where is Dino? :)

@VioletRose, I loved the Snorks, too... in fact, I'm pretty sure I still have a Snork's Valentine's card that my 2nd grade crush gave me, lol.

Anybody remember Gummi Bears?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HCjQbKowUo

Or the Monchichis?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEQy8vqElLE

I had a Monchichi stuffed animal, and it was the cutest thing ever! I've never see them listed on any retro list, though. HOPING I still have it somewhere, as well. :)

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKami

Oh! And as far as potential cute retro cartoon cakes go, in addition to Tom and Jerry, I would love to see Droopy or Chilly Willy... ha hee HACHOO! :)

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKami

Adorbs! (When did Pepe Le Pew become a hipster?)

You so cannot mention that you made a steampunk ray gun and not post a pic! That is just not fair!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

LOL of the day: Whacking to Pecking. That may become a classic in my own little world :) What wonderful flashbacks.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterms anthrope

I loved Rose Petal Place and Moondreamers! I had lots of stuff from them that I wish I would have kept for my girls. One thing that did get kept for some reason was the Moondreamers ship. It's still at my parents and played with quite often when my girls visit them.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

So adorable. Love the Rainbow Brite cake and The Smurfs. The Yogi cake is adorable too.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

I used to wonder why didn't Wile E. Coyote ("Genius.") didn't just go to a store and buy a chicken. He obviously had money...and where did THAT come from, anyway...? (Most wild animals are not independently wealthy. Perhaps the Endangered Species Fund?)

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

My childhood! Laid before me in cake! And with absolutely impeccable timing as I'm taking a nice long stroll down memory lane at the moment. Nothing could be better.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh Ann

I showed this to my almost 3 year old and she wants to play with "murfette". Won't believe me when I say it's cake!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRocky girl

Hey! Where's Popeye's TATTOOS? You can't deprive a hard-bitten, nearly incoherent sailor man of his badges of honor!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

My era of Cartoons were those above but also "H. R. Puff-In-Stuff", "The Banana Splits", "Roger RamJet" , "Mr Magoo" and "The Archies". I think I learned to appreciate classical music thanks to Bugs Bunny and the early Looney Toons 'toons. I loved Rocky and Bullwinkle and I'm glad they have made a movie of "Sherman and Mr Peabody". (Cakes will flow!).

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNetasha

Kami: before my latest surgery, i went out and bought the complete Gummi Bears series on DVD, so i could watch it while i recuperated. the surgery before that, i bought the PeeWee's Playhouse series. (yeah, i know. i've had a few surgeries. you try getting to 57 without any surgeries.)

i remember Snorks, too. and Monchichis, although my kids didn't care much for them. and i loved all of the other cartoons represented. i spent a lot of time watching cartoons with my Dad, Wile E was his favorite. and he got me to eat spinach by saying it would make me strong, like Popeye. but it didn't.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdawn

I didn't think anyone else knew about Rose Petal Place! I loved it so much, but just figured it was something that got handed down from my cousins to me. Loved it.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJill

SAWEET! Half of my childhood in cake! :D

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlexa

Omg I had totally forgotten about Moon Dreamers! I had some toys from it, including the bear, which I loved. Sadly I don't remember what the cartoon was like. I'll have to see if I can find episodes anywhere.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermelanie sparkles

I remember the snorks too! Now if there was a Jem cake to go with the movie that is in production right now for Jem and the Holograms! Anybody else remember them?!? SO EXCITED❗️

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJillM

amazing work.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

I need to get a She-Ra cake. Tomboys need nostalgic desserts, too.

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

I'm so glad you had a cake with Scrooge MacDuck! My husband and I went to see the Hobbit a couple months ago and when they got to the scene where Bilbo sees the vast amount of gold I leaned over to my husband and whispered "This puts the Money Bin to shame, don't you think?" And for the rest of the movie all I could think of was how awesome it would be to be able to swim in all that gold! LOL
I am loving these cakes!

March 23, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

I love the Uncle Scrooge McDuck cake!! It reminds me of the commemorative figurines created from classic Carl Barks duck stories! That's my kind of cake! Except, I wouldn't want to eat it because it would be a work of art in itself. (Yes, the others were really cool too...but I'm a Disney Duck fan, so I have to stick with my ducks!) :)

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterErica

"There's a place
where we can go...
At the end of the raaaain-bow!"

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAli

I'll see your Rose Petal Place, and raise you a Victoria Plum.

}:)

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSpacegeek Nat

Where are you pigeon? I'm looking somewhere to find you! (Said with a French accent, of course.)

These are all pretty amazing!

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

Wow to all of 'em. And the Looney Toons and Pink Panther!

BUT! One hit me with a whooper of a memory. That Rainbow Brite cake pulled up a memory of eating Fruit Loops that was so strong I could taste the cereal and smell the milk in the bowl.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterUldihaa

The Popeye cake is amazing---but spinach leaves aren't shaped like that! Love the Rainbow Brite and Yogi Bear cakes (I have a friend whose two dogs are named "Yogi" and "Ranger".) My favorite cartoon was Rocky and Bullwinkle---looking forward to seeing the new movie (and cakes, eventually.)

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

"Work smarter, not harder"

Is my absolute favorite quote, and I use it so much that I can't believe no one has called me out for quoting a cartoon duck. But really - it's a great line.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngel

Totally made my month to have you (and others) remember Rose Petal! Whenever I talk 80s cartoons with friends no one ever remembers Rose Petal for some reason. I'm so happy not to be alone! Everyone remembers my other favorites: Popples, Rainbow Bright. thunder cats, gummi bears, etc.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRowanmdm

As I was starting in on this post, I thought to myself, 'there better be a Smurfs' cake. And there was!! Thank you thank you thank you! I love the little Azriel!! These cakes are all amazing!

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAngie

Erm, Uh, Jen. Hon, I don't know how to tell you this, so I'm just gonna come right out and say it:

*deep cleansing breath*

Marvin's ray gun wasn't named Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator. His ray gun was actually just called a Disintegration Pistol. The name actually refers to a stick of regular dynamite, inserted into a large weapon he built to blow up the Earth (because it obstructs his view of Venus). The name is alternatively pronounced Illudium Pu-36 Explosive Space Modulator, depending on the episode.

Not trying to rain on your parade. I'm just a geek who felt the need to enlighten. It's still an awesome name for a steampunk weapon, though. :)

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAshley P

They could never produce Rose Petal Place these days. They would be accused of reinforcing gender stereotypes. And well....we just can't have that.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTed C

Thank you for these Sunday Sweets. I have a habit of posting cool and appropriately themed pictures on my friends pages for their birthday on Facebook. A lot of those pictures come from you or the bakers pages! Thank you for helping me find the awesomeness of cake making!

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJulienne

@Carla-I caught the original Pink Panther movie Saturday night, too-that was the first thing I thought of when I saw that cake(my husband and I were guessing how old that movie was-it predated us by two years......O.o!!)

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWildDuck

This post made me so happy. Just FYI.
As a big Marvin the Martian fan, I am super jealous of that SP ray gun. Gimme it.

March 24, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCakeNinja

OMGosh! I thought I was alone in remembering Rose Petal Place! I still have a cassette that I would run & listen to if we still had a cassette player. And now I'm humming the song. Funny how memories can come rushing back at you.

March 25, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjeswel

Wile E Coyote, Super Genius! I love the way that rolls off the tongue!

Am I the ONLY one who saw an abundant trail of roadrunner eggs until they were designated as a 'bubbly dust train?'

Yes, no? Alright, carry on then. Beep, beep (((((OOOooooo - whoosh!

March 26, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAdo Annie

On the Pepe Le Pew cake, can anyone work out what the recipient's name is? I get Gear__ or possibly Jear__ which doesn't go with any normally spelled name I can think of. Gearald? Jearrold? Gearen? Gears?

March 27, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbob

Love it! I'm a cartoon junkie, so this was right up my alley. And if you're on a classic 80's movie binge, don't forget to re-watch "Flight of the Navigator." It's genius!
