What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

I don't know if you've noticed lately, but the sun is kind of awesome.

It gives off all this bright, pure light - but refract that light though a prism, like a crystal...

Beautiful selection...but who is MQYRQ?

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTom in Chicago

Gorgeous.

"Red and orange and green and blue,
Shining yellow, purple, too.
All the colors that you know
Live up in the rainbow."
Learned in kindergarten, not forgotten almost 60 years later.

The second to last cake is just SOOOOOOOOO cute! They're all beautiful, but the little sun-topped cupcakes around the edge just push it into Adorable Overload!

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRoxy Random

My father always taught me "Richard of York gained battles in vain", which I still use to remember the colour spectrum.
That indigo cake nearly put me away.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPersephone

@Tom in Chicago:
I think it's "Mayra" as on the 5th cupcake from the right. (The little bows throw it off a bit, but they're just the "tail" of the a's.)
@Alison: This is the way I remember it, from many moons ago: "Red and yellow and pink and green/purple and orange and blue/I can sing a rainbow/sing a rainbow/sing a rainbow, too." (But the colors aren't in order in that version, either,) =^-.-^=

OMG the little suns :D :D it's cold and gray in NY, needed that

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

It is snowing here - an actual blizzard. These cakes are a wonderful antidote. Thanks.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJessica H

i loooooooove that green cake!!!

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterenchantressbatrider

These are marvelous! I'm loving the fade on the orange cake; it is so subtle it sort of sneaks up on you. Those hand-painted peonies are phenomenal. And the prism cake -- is it too much to hope that the crystals are made of sugar? Either way, it is a stunning cake (and photograph)!

Of course, all the flowers remind me of john(thoJ)'s "daisy" post, so thanks for the extra giggle today as I get ready to go back to 200 teenagers tomorrow!

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

with windchill temps severely below zero here in MN (in spite of the sun being out), it's nice to see color of all sorts here - reminds me that spring WILL come and bring its riot of color...

I also learned the ROY G. BIV acronym. I think it was in Physics in High School. Funny how those little things stick in your head forever.

I'm a HUGE fan of rainbows and LOVE these cakes - I love that third cake with the rainbow cascading down and over the tiers to the pot of gold! And while not a huge fan of orchids, the rainbow colored orchids on that last cake are pretty spectacular...

Also love the red and violet cakes. The others are lovely too, but those two just pushed my buttons a bit more.

What is this sun you speak of?

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHellaide

The sun'll come out
on Cake Wrecks
Bet your bottom dollar
That Sun-day Sweets
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about
Those rainbows
Clears away the wrecked cakes,
Oh those horrors,
'Til there's none!

When I'm stuck a cake
That's gray,
And morbid,
I just stick out my chin
And Grin,
And Say,
Oh!

The sun'll come out
on Cake Wrecks
So ya gotta hang on
'Til Sun-day Sweets
Come what may
Sun-day Sweets, Sun-day Sweets
I love ya on Cake Wrecks!
You're always
A lovely day!

This is just the antidote that I needed to counteract all the snow today. The red one is so elegant. The yellow is so cheery. The blue one is delicate. The green is worthy of envy. The orange is so warming. The lavender is a vision. I love them all. I want one of each on my birthday.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEvie_M

I actually learned it by Roy G. Biv. And the blue one is the best. Blue flowers are always my favorites.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNancie

@sendingtheclowns, I sing that song a lot--definitely a song from my childhood. In my head, I hear the Peggy Lee version, which I still think is wonderful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9HBlZf3Go4
"Listen with your eyes/and sing everything you see."
Great memory and wonderful cakes for this gray January day in Pittsburgh. Thanks.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFM

Love them all! The individual sunny cupcakes for the party guests, soooooo sweet! I am a huge fan of the ombré effect! Indigo and violet are my top picks this week!!

@sandy, GREAT song lyrics! I like that earworm much better than the previous day's post :-)

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDorene

I could stare at the indigo cake for an hour. That color is breathtaking.

And thanks for introducing me to Roy G. Biv. I wasn't familiar.

I actually saw a rainbow this week, which is unusual for January.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermelanie sparkles

Those are all so stunning! I always love the Sunday Sweets.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGloria P

Richard Of York Gained Battles In Vain here. I'm also fascinated that all the little girls at Mayra's party have names ending in A. I'm looking forward to giggling when Agnes, Ethyl, Gertrude, Bertha, Ivy, Hazel and Mabel come back into fashion.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAviatrix

@FM: How about that!! The version I remember the best is Andy Williams'. I guess they're all pretty sweet. I miss lullabies. =^u.u^=

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

Love these cakes. The sun cake with the cupcakes at the bottom is so adorable.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

These are just beautiful, truly works of art! Thanks for brightening up this snowy day :-)

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKathie

I remember this song too that is similar to @Alison's. I too learned it either at Kindergarten, Captain Kangaroo or maybe Sesame Street waaaay back in the early 60's. It goes something like this....

Red and yellow and pink and green
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow,
sing a rainbow,
you can sing a rainbow too.

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNetasha

That last cake with the rainbow-hued orchids looks good enough to....uh.....eat?

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterteresa from Portland

"I Can Sing a Rainbow" (also known as "Sing a Rainbow") is a popular song written by Arthur Hamilton. It was featured in the 1955 film Pete Kelly's Blues, where it was sung by Peggy Lee.
Andy Williams released a version on his 1964 album, The Wonderful World of Andy Williams.
My version predates that by a couple of years. It is sung either to "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or, less gently, to the William Tell Overture. :-D

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

Aviatrix, based on the title of the bakery and the one visible boy's name, (I believe it says Federico) I'm assuming that cake comes from a Spanish or Italian-speaking country, where in most cases, the 'a' is what makes it a feminine name. I'm guessing those girls are named for relatives or saints, rather than the characters from bad teen fiction or misspelled city name monikers that today's anglophone parents are burdening their kids with, or at least, that's my hope. :)

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTAL

Oh, that red cake is stunning!! I'd keep it around just to stare at it all day. What a beautiful creation. :)

January 5, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAndreaB

All the cakes are spectacular! That green one is my favourite though. As I scrolled down I was thinking "what a lovely shade of green", and then I saw the ruffles - they take the cake ;)

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

That last cake was absolutely beautiful. I just got in from clearing a 3 foot bank of snow from the end of my driveway, (hopefully) just wide enough for my husband's car to get through tomorrow (today?). Windchills are expected to be -20 to -30 tomorrow and Tuesday, so the sun and rainbows were especially appreciated! If you could find cakes with flames for one of the next few days, it might help (just a thought).

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

That green cake is breathtaking!

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNebet

I get lots of chuckles from you during the week, but I just LOVE Sunday Sweets!

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKaren in FL

(((Cake Wrecks)))

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

Oh, I can't decide which is my favorite of today's Sunday Sweets! Usually anything purple, but the orange and indigo cakes are so gorgeous!

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

@sendingtheclowns- I learned the same version you did and in fact sang it with a squeaky sore throat voice at my desk.
@persephone- it was just good ol' Roy G Biv in my neck of the woods.
@sandy- love the Annie reference
I think my favorite cake is the one with the cute little smiley sunshines. Almost too cute to eat!!

January 6, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterFuchsia70

Ha! I, too, learned the "I can sing a rainbow" song in grade 1 (ummm...1974?ish) and I can still remember all the lyrics and the tune. I never knew it went any farther than my music class though! You learn a new thing every day here on Cake Wrecks folks! :)

We got the Roy G Biv in my neck of the woods...one of the many clever devices to remember the order of things. Anybody remember "Mark's Very Enlightened Mother Just Sent Us Nine Parakeets." (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto - still a planet when I was a kid!) or "Kevin Philips Could Order Five Green Socks"? (Kindgom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species) Oh the stuff stuck in my head...

January 7, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterkrunchifrog

Oh my word, the indigo cake! Now THAT is an indigo to be proud of!
