Sunday Sweets: Pretty as a Peacock
January 19, 2014 When I was younger, I read somewhere that having peacock feathers in the house was bad luck. Something about the "eyes" on the feathers being evil.
Now, I don't know about you, but if I could gaze into these eyes all day, I'd consider myself downright lucky.

Gorgeous cakes. I've always admited peacocks for being clever enough to include all my favorite colors in one feather....
I bet the person who said peacock feathers are unlucky was just jealous.

I LOVE all of these cakes, but the Tiffany lamp one is my fave! I'll have to show these cakes to my 12 year old daughter, because she loves peacock feather designs.

I don't believe in "luck", good or bad-there's not a superstitious feather in my head. These lovelies really add pizzazz and panache to a gloomy, gray and galoshy day in the Northeast. Brava! =^-.-^=
Just as I enjoy starting my week-days with the wrecks, I look forward to the superb Sunday Sweets to remind me that creative cakery does in fact exist and, and, as these cakes show, does it ever! As a former stained-glass hobbyist, I'm partial to the Tiffany, but I love 'em all. Good work, Sharyn.
I once saw an albino peacock as a child. It's delightful to be reminded of that beautiful memory by a cake.
oh, so so so many beautiful cakes, i almost can't decide! but i am simply amazed by the black and white "lines" with the peacock on the corner in your "bonus" section. (a delightful older post, btw.) great work from all of the bakers and decorators.

Despite the fact that I was once attacked by five peacocks and had to be rescued I still want these beautiful cakes!
I have such a love for albino peacocks. The colors of the normal is pretty, but there's just something absolutely gorgeous about the lack of color in albinos. (They're not true albinos, either.)
I love the peacock theme, but I especially enjoy the Indian inspired ones.

Agreed: I want to see the site continue for as long as J&J are willing to do it, but what I want to know is: do we have to actually buy something to help support the site, or does CW get something every time someone clicks through the link? A lot of the time I'm just looking up info,not buying..

Ok, I have to know if the inspiration for the 4th cake down with all the blue and gold is Whistler's Peacock Room at the Smithsonian. Because that would be totally awesome. I hope we discover the unknown baker so we can ask!
The next-to-last cake (the Tiffany-esque one)~ I'd love to hollow it out, and install a soft, low-wattage bulb inside so that the whole thing would glow. Imagine it in a dark room...((swoon))!
I really like the mid-century vibe the Fleur and Royal Bakery cakes have--the Fleur one even looks like it got its inspiration from high-end 70's wallpaper design.

As a Peacock myself, I wish I could go back in time to have one of these as my wedding cake!
After seeing Kung Fu Panda 2 I have an easier time seeing peacocks as evil. But these cakes are too pretty to be evil.
Personally I hate peacocks... for a reason. I was attacked by one when I was about 4. It ripped the front of my t-shirt to shreds. I do like cake #5 though.
As I understand it, the bad luck idea is peacocks are so vain, they die of shame if a feather is plucked, which makes the feather cursed? Silly, but that's what I've heard! It may just be a theater susperstition, though. We have a lit of them! I do know a lot of actors who refuse to wear or have peacock feathers onstage (and fresh flowers, or the color green . . . The list goes on!)
Peacocks (and their hens!) are much smarter than people think. There are three males and two females where I work, each with a distinctive personality. And none of them are evil :)
These cakes, omg...I'm going to steal bits of them for my own cake one day.
I know the ads are probably random, so maybe no-one else saw it, but there was a miracledietthing ad with a gross blob on a finger and the caption, "eat this, never diet again" ... seemed rather ironic on a site dedicated to cakes that mostly make you never want to eat again.
I grew up with peacocks, my enduring memory is of a day bushfire raged across the landscape and we had to light backburn strips around the house. the peacocks had not seen fire before and evidently had no instincts about it... they looked at it, then honked at it, then walked up to the 5-inch high line of flame and stuck their feet into it to feel what it was!!! gorgeous birds, brain the size of a pea, most of it devoted to controlling tail muscles. makes you wonder why they're not endangered! even our domestic cat could catch them. (he loved to grab their tails in moulting season)
they don't taste like chicken, though. more like turkey. ;-)
Is that a real feather? I wouldn't want to eat cake that had real feathers pushed into it, no matter how "sterile" it was supposed to be. I just can't get over the "eww, how germy" feeling I get seeing it! Beautiful, but not on my food!
Why would someone assume a person who didn't like peacocks was jealous? They gave a very good reason! If a person dislikes dogs because they were bit by one, they certainly aren't jealous of dogs! I can imagine a peacock could do a lot of damage.
Peacock is one of my favorite animals and as an artist - I am truly inspired by its beauty! Now that said...using real feathers on a cake...eh...not my first choice. I've seen what those tail feathers are dragged over and well. you get the message! But for the edible ones....breathtaking!

I think cake 3 by Tasha's Tasty Treats is actually based on Scandinavian Christmas ornaments made with wood shavings, especially given the wintery snowflake look.
Peacock feathers were considered unlucky because in ancient Greece, the peacock was the sacred bird of Hera, queen of the gods. Only her priestesses were allowed to gather the feathers to adorn her temples; anyone else was considered to be blasphemers--including the King. Hera was a great protector of Greece but an implacable foe when provoked.
