Sunday Sweets: Orange & Teal
September 22, 2013 Hi guys! Renee here. Seeing as I'm the new kid at Sweets, I thought it would be a good idea to suck up stay on the boss' good side. And since Jen's favorite color combo is orange and teal, I know just what to do.

Hi Renee! Great start- awesome cake choices. I just love Sunday sweets as each cake is more breathtaking than the last; in a GOOD way. (p.s. If Sharyn gets Jen a lemur I suggest you get a tiger for John. Have to keep all the bosses happy, ya know?)
LOVE the poem, hated the cakes*, but that isn't Renee's fault!
*(One exception was the sculpted woman - wow. The details in that one are amazing!)
Here I was, thinking that you were proving just how hard it is to create the patter that ties the cakes together, and wondering how many months/years it would take to even get close to the quality of Jen's creative banter, and then you brought it home. Bwahaha! Nothing like a good pun to tie things up in a neat little bow.
I have always been told that there isn't a word in the english language that rhymes with orange. Nice poem.

That first one blew me completely out of the water! Edible glitter! I'll say it again in all caps 'cause I like glitter. EDIBLE GLITTER!!! Sometimes these cakes look fake they're so beautiful. That one with the lady? Wow. Just wow. Sunday Sweets is the first thing I look at while having so coffee. Jen, thanks for your site!

I like both the Japanese influence cake and the quilted-looking cake--the flowers on the latter were astonishing!
I wasn't sure if I "like teal and orange" until I saw these beauties... Wow! I sure do now! Love Sunday Sweets.
I would not have thought orange-and-teal would be a particularly great combination... I was wrong, and these are gorgeous.
Some of them leave me wondering, though, like the 2nd one... how would you CUT that without it just toppling over?

Orange and purple are my favorite color combo, but orange and teal are a very close second. I think it dates back to my preference for Burger Chef over any other place for burgers.
That said the 4th from the bottom is my favorite. The pattern on the cake, translated to quilting, is known as "orange peel" design. Knowing this, I would have reversed the colors...but I'm "that way".
I did not like the glitter cake; it looks inedible and more "artsy fartsy" than good design. I also did not like the flowers with the stripe cake; the flowers look old, dusty and kind of slapped on instead of planned.
Liked some of the cakes, good job on the poem Renee, and am I the only one that thinks that sparkly cake would either taste bad and/or not be good for the digestive system?

Love that the first cake was from MY local bakery. The poem made me laugh through and through (which was rather interesting, since hard laughter causes contractions). So worth it though.
I like this color combination. It's cheerful. Orange & teal. With silver. Or brown. Or white. The first one is bolder than I'm used to, gotta admit. For some reason, the wrap-around stripes, the hand-painted, and the little cake with visible swirled icing (buttercream?) make me happy. Love the ruffles, and ALL the flowers. The sculpted cake made me zoom in to admire all the details. And because I'm a long-time reader, I'm also wondering what this food coloring would do to me later.

There is one word that rhymes with orange: "Sporange," an alteration of the word "sporangium," which is a term for a part of a fern or similar plant.

I promise that they are not secret agents, do not have a secret hideout, and will not make anything go boom! ;-) The Daughter is selling mint-flavored 2-tone (chocolate & white chocolate) penguins for the Girl Scouts Fall Product sale. Comes in a gift tin, I think. ...of course, I'm stuck with nuts & mag subscriptions thanks to my allergies...grrr...think I'll go eat my gluten-free/alternate sweetener non-penguin-shaped chocolate stash...maybe I could bite it into the shape of a penguin?...hmmm... :-)

Look no further than your door hinge.
Favorite is the rotation one.
Only thing I didn't like was that some of these bakers didn't have the courage of their (or, perhaps, Jen's) convictions. Rather than going full out for orange-teal, they settled for orange-baby blue. Jen's right -- orange-teal is better.
And bravo to Renee for finding such a beautiful way to

There are actually several words that rhyme with orange. Rhyme just means two words share a final syllable, not "the whole word is the same except the first consonant", so any 2-or-more syllable word ending in -ange, -enge, -inge, -onge or -unge where the final syllable is unstressed will do. If you want to be really pedantic, you could make a case it should end in -range, -renge, -ringe, -ronge or -runge, but few poets would go that far! So try "lozenge", "scavenge or "challenge". Depending on your personal pronunciation of "orange", even "syringe" rhymes. Good luck making a non-nauseating poem about Sunday Sweets that mentions syringes, though!
i hope the ninth cake from the top - the white one with the swirls - was as delicious as it was beautiful. i would definitely have taken a picture before it was cut and framed it.

Fantastic job, Renee! And the cakes are awesome! I especially love the sparkly one first. Of course, that could be because I spent a bunch of time yesterday making Christmas ornaments with glitter, but still, PRETTY!!

I thought it was a secret of the universe that "Door hinge" rhymes with Orange.
Sorry to break it to all the glitter lovers out there, but that glitter cake is not covered in "edible glitter". It's covered in glitter, same as you find at the craft stores, but just in tiny containers that are labeled for cake usage. Labeled "non-toxic" but "For decoration only, not to be eaten".
That doesn't stop a lot of bakers from using it anyway, but they don't let people know that what is on their cake is actually little pieces of plastic and/or metal shavings, and likely came from China - the same place as all the other **high quality** plastic and/or metal items around your house that we keep seeing recall notices about when a child puts them in their mouth.
