What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Orange & Teal

Hi guys! Renee here. Seeing as I'm the new kid at Sweets, I thought it would be a good idea to suck up stay on the boss' good side. And since Jen's favorite color combo is orange and teal, I know just what to do.

*Ahem hem hem*
[standing up straight, hands behind back]

For Jen, lover of orange and teal:

(By Say It With Sugar)

You -- uh -- sparkle with your wit and zeal.

Lines climb just like my admiration:

(By J'adore Cakes)

I hope you like your stripes in rotation!

(By Decadent Creations)

To me your mood's never ziggy-zaggy

(By Jessicakes)

Like this cake, nothing on you is saggy.
(Or, uh, so I'm told.)

Just like these mums stand, cool and bright

(By Baking Passion)

You are a... a... beacon on this site!

Unlike these blooms you're never scattered:

(By The Cake Boutique)

If I lose this job, I'd just be shattered.
[[Bambi eyes]]

You look nothing like this, but you're just as cheeky:

(By Natalia Da Silva)

And when you play hide n' seek, I'm sure you're super sneaky.

As vibrant as these buds are orange:

(By Cake Heart)

And... and...

I bet YOU'D know a rhyme for orange.
:)

Hand-painted swirls all twist and bend:

(By mlusk11)

Have I mentioned your great taste in friends?

A perfect flower in a sea of Sweet:

(By Cake-ity Cakes)

Like this cake, you're good enough to... er... meet.

o.0

And now that my poem has gone 'round the bend:

(By Madison's on Main)

Orange you glad I saved this pun teal the end?

Psst. Hey. Curious which bakeries in your area have been featured here on Sweets? Then be sure to check our Sunday Sweets Directory!

Um, ditto. (Geez, Renee, you're setting the bar awfully high. Now I'm going to have to go out and buy her a lemur or something...)

Fantastic cakes + hilarious concept = job security

Well done.

Hi Renee! Great start- awesome cake choices. I just love Sunday sweets as each cake is more breathtaking than the last; in a GOOD way. (p.s. If Sharyn gets Jen a lemur I suggest you get a tiger for John. Have to keep all the bosses happy, ya know?)

LOVE the poem, hated the cakes*, but that isn't Renee's fault!

*(One exception was the sculpted woman - wow. The details in that one are amazing!)

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKel

Here I was, thinking that you were proving just how hard it is to create the patter that ties the cakes together, and wondering how many months/years it would take to even get close to the quality of Jen's creative banter, and then you brought it home. Bwahaha! Nothing like a good pun to tie things up in a neat little bow.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSusie

I have always been told that there isn't a word in the english language that rhymes with orange. Nice poem.

PLUS Sharyn if you get a lemur, Just saying it should be able to MOVE IT. ;D

That first one blew me completely out of the water! Edible glitter! I'll say it again in all caps 'cause I like glitter. EDIBLE GLITTER!!! Sometimes these cakes look fake they're so beautiful. That one with the lady? Wow. Just wow. Sunday Sweets is the first thing I look at while having so coffee. Jen, thanks for your site!

Sparkly...Cake...Me..Wants...

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVivs

I like both the Japanese influence cake and the quilted-looking cake--the flowers on the latter were astonishing!

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSean M

I wasn't sure if I "like teal and orange" until I saw these beauties... Wow! I sure do now! Love Sunday Sweets.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I would not have thought orange-and-teal would be a particularly great combination... I was wrong, and these are gorgeous.

Some of them leave me wondering, though, like the 2nd one... how would you CUT that without it just toppling over?

Great work, as always.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterChris

Orange and purple are my favorite color combo, but orange and teal are a very close second. I think it dates back to my preference for Burger Chef over any other place for burgers.
That said the 4th from the bottom is my favorite. The pattern on the cake, translated to quilting, is known as "orange peel" design. Knowing this, I would have reversed the colors...but I'm "that way".
I did not like the glitter cake; it looks inedible and more "artsy fartsy" than good design. I also did not like the flowers with the stripe cake; the flowers look old, dusty and kind of slapped on instead of planned.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStarB

Liked some of the cakes, good job on the poem Renee, and am I the only one that thinks that sparkly cake would either taste bad and/or not be good for the digestive system?

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

Great poem Renee...you are excellent at sucking up...I mean complimenting your boss. AND complementing! Great cakes, too.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBetty Martin

Love that the first cake was from MY local bakery. The poem made me laugh through and through (which was rather interesting, since hard laughter causes contractions). So worth it though.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMommy23Melody

I like this color combination. It's cheerful. Orange & teal. With silver. Or brown. Or white. The first one is bolder than I'm used to, gotta admit. For some reason, the wrap-around stripes, the hand-painted, and the little cake with visible swirled icing (buttercream?) make me happy. Love the ruffles, and ALL the flowers. The sculpted cake made me zoom in to admire all the details. And because I'm a long-time reader, I'm also wondering what this food coloring would do to me later.

Great job, Renee!

Sharyn, good thing I wasn't drinking coffee when I read your comment.

"door hinge"
It's the closest rhyme to orange The creator of "Rhymes with Orange" actually titled one of her strips "Rhymes with Door Hinge"

Welcome, Renee-- great post!

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHappy Camper

There is one word that rhymes with orange: "Sporange," an alteration of the word "sporangium," which is a term for a part of a fern or similar plant.

Isn't Google wonderful?

Usually it's safe to read Sunday Sweets while drinking my coffee. Not so much today. O.o
Very nicely done Renee!

Okay, I'll admit, I cackled madly at the poem for pretty much this whole post. Renee, Jen, and Felicia Day - all of you like orange and teal. And now you've proved yourselves right - those cakes are gorgeous!

@ Renee...well-done! Congrats & may your future posts be just as witty!

@ Sharyn, how about some penguins to go with that lemur? I promise that they are not secret agents, do not have a secret hideout, and will not make anything go boom! ;-) The Daughter is selling mint-flavored 2-tone (chocolate & white chocolate) penguins for the Girl Scouts Fall Product sale. Comes in a gift tin, I think. ...of course, I'm stuck with nuts & mag subscriptions thanks to my allergies...grrr...think I'll go eat my gluten-free/alternate sweetener non-penguin-shaped chocolate stash...maybe I could bite it into the shape of a penguin?...hmmm... :-)

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

@KarateLady: I would LOVE penguin chocolates -- how close are you to Boulder?

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

OMG! A rosemaled cake! By far my favorite Sunday sweet ever!
Great job with the post, Renee! How many of us wish we could curry favor with our bosses using cake?! :D

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGingerSnap

If Jen hadn't indicated a lack of interest in sports in previous posts, I'd ask if she was a Dolphins fan.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

All of them look amazing. Not sure if I'd be willing to eat glitter frosting, but it certainly looks impressive.

Now, regarding pic number 10 (the one where you can see a woman holding it). Has everyone on this planet bought that Ikea's glass plate? I regularly see it everywhere. And I don't mean in my kitchen (well, there too).

Well done Renee' :)

B-b-bacon? On this site?

I may have to show Sunday Sweets enhanced attention...

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

If you want to find a rhyme for orange,
Look no further than your door hinge.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFontLady

Favorite is the rotation one.

Only thing I didn't like was that some of these bakers didn't have the courage of their (or, perhaps, Jen's) convictions. Rather than going full out for orange-teal, they settled for orange-baby blue. Jen's right -- orange-teal is better.

And bravo to Renee for finding such a beautiful way to suck up stay on the boss's good side.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJane

OK, Erin Yvette, the challenge is on for you to come up with two lines of rhyme for orange and sporange. FontLady has already met my other challenge.

A wonderful post for a very tired person on Sunday evening. Thanks for the wit, rhyme, glamour and yumminess!

great first outing, Renee!!
actually, "just" great!

Orange and teal bring to mind two other words: Howard Johnson's.

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNo Capes

@Sharyn - Uhh...nowhere...we're in Houston. Sorry. :-( There should be a local Girl Scout willing to sell you one... ;-) And the Scouts are selling mag subscriptions too - that, I think, she can sell you (or anyone we know) online...

September 22, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

Awesome post! Orange and teal are my favorites too, so I'm so happy to see a whole post in appreciation of them :D

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJulia

There are actually several words that rhyme with orange. Rhyme just means two words share a final syllable, not "the whole word is the same except the first consonant", so any 2-or-more syllable word ending in -ange, -enge, -inge, -onge or -unge where the final syllable is unstressed will do. If you want to be really pedantic, you could make a case it should end in -range, -renge, -ringe, -ronge or -runge, but few poets would go that far! So try "lozenge", "scavenge or "challenge". Depending on your personal pronunciation of "orange", even "syringe" rhymes. Good luck making a non-nauseating poem about Sunday Sweets that mentions syringes, though!

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAA

i hope the ninth cake from the top - the white one with the swirls - was as delicious as it was beautiful. i would definitely have taken a picture before it was cut and framed it.

Fantastic job, Renee! And the cakes are awesome! I especially love the sparkly one first. Of course, that could be because I spent a bunch of time yesterday making Christmas ornaments with glitter, but still, PRETTY!!

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura P.

Sorry I'm a bit late on this, but as the ladies said above: Great job, Renee!

(As an aside, I think the "hand-painted swirls" cake is my fave from this week's post.)

September 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterwoodnwheel

I thought it was a secret of the universe that "Door hinge" rhymes with Orange.

September 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVandalfan

Sorry to break it to all the glitter lovers out there, but that glitter cake is not covered in "edible glitter". It's covered in glitter, same as you find at the craft stores, but just in tiny containers that are labeled for cake usage. Labeled "non-toxic" but "For decoration only, not to be eaten".

That doesn't stop a lot of bakers from using it anyway, but they don't let people know that what is on their cake is actually little pieces of plastic and/or metal shavings, and likely came from China - the same place as all the other **high quality** plastic and/or metal items around your house that we keep seeing recall notices about when a child puts them in their mouth.
