What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Ombre Treats

Everywhere I go, I see ombre -- ombre nails, ombre dresses, ombre flowers, ombre tomatoes. My friends are even starting to get their hair done in ombre -- which used to mean it was time to get their roots touched up, but now it's a thing.

You either know what I'm talking about or -- like my husband -- you think I'm leaving off an "H".

Just in case, Merriam Webster defines ombre as: having colors or tones that shade into each other.

Here, why don't I just show you?

 (By Sugablossom Cakes)

 That's ombre.

  Isn't it gorgeous?

What I didn't realize until I started looking into ombre cakes was just how many ways ombre could be incorporated into a cake.

 Sometimes literally.

The outside deserves a look, too:

There are a lot of ways to achieve ombre.

You can take a pristine white cake and "ombre it up" with some pretty piping:

... or maybe a swirl of flowers -- like this one, inspired by a Steampunk-themed invitation:

(By Sugar Song Cakes)

(See, Steampunk doesn't have to be brown...)

It seems like bakers are able to make ombre cakes out of pretty much anything:

 Pretty blue ruffles:

... big, swoopy swirls:

(By Charm City Cakes)

 ... pink fondant tubes:

(By Fat Girl Cakes)

...teeny-tiny flowers:

(By Cake Fixation)

...and sunset slashes:

(By Eat Cake Be Merry)

Sometimes, the shading is subtle:

(By Olive arts)

Other ombre cakes are a little more extroverted:

(By Frosting)

You certainly couldn't accuse this cake of being shy:

(By Maggie Austin Cake)

... no matter how much it blushes.

One thing's for sure; ombre cakes will never fade quietly into the background.

And thank goodness for that!

I love ombre! I want to make one of those cakes with the ombre layers.

And yeah, Firefox doesn't recognize ombre either, so it's not just your husband.

The teeny tiny flower one is so sweet :D and the rest are just lovely

So much better on cakes than on hairs.
I love, love, love the big swoopy swirls!

AHA!! I'm NOT the only human on the planet who thinks that orange AND pink AND certain shades of orchid/purple look amazing together! I can't wait to show this to a few SnootySnootSnoots...
Vindication tastes as sweet as these cakes look.....!

Back in prehistoric times, when I had "art" class in school, they used to just call it "shading". This sounds more expensive.

I kept looking for "like" after each picture! These are beautiful!!!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTauna

I'm quite impressed by the second cake. Nice touch tinting the cake to match the dots on the icing.

Also, I learned a new word.

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWill

Woah, they are amazing, even husband was impressed!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterClairus

I absolutely love the blue ruffles cake, to me it really looks like the ruffles would flutter slightly if it caught a breeze! Just perfection! All of the cakes today are amazing but there's just something about the ruffle cake I LOVE!

Gorgeous! I love them all! My favorite this week is the one where the inside cake matches the outside dots. But it wasn't easy picking a favorite.... Another well done post! Thanks, Sharyn!

I got goosebumps looking at each one....thank you for posting these NON-wrecks!! (BTW, I LOVE you guys; i bought your book for my BFF at xmas and we peed our pants AND laffed our butts off!)

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoan C.

I love the Sunday sweets. These are lovely

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine Dempsey

It looks to me like the white cake with the gorgeous purple piping (cake #3) also becomes more grey/silver toward the top. Could be the lighting, though.

Beautiful cakes!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMyra

I pick the hydrangea cake because those really are the colors that hydrangeas come in. So clever!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKay

Stunning! CCcakes is art!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Ombre is my most favorite thing in the world - except on hair. I can't believe people are paying good money to make it look like your roots are showing.

But ombre! I made a pink layer ombre cake for my daughter's first birthday and while it looked nothing like the ombre layer cake you featured, it was still one of my proudest moments!

Yay for ombre!

I've decided it's a good thing that I started reading Cake Wrecks AFTER I got married. I had a perfectly nice, good tasting, well executed cake, but it wasn't anything eye popping like so many that you share here on Sunday Sweets and I'm pretty sure each of those would be over my budget. These are gorgeous.

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Today is my birthday so I get to imagine that all those gorgeous cakes are mine!

July 14, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

@ Joan C.: " we peed our pants AND laffed our butts off!"

I couldn't help but giggle @ the "visual" : two friends with wet pants and no butts. Good one! =^~.~^=

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

I could lick that swirl cake like an ice cream cone. All of them looked delicious.

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

I love the cakes, but am I the only one that is horrified by the sheer amount of icing inside the dot cake? It is out of this world thick!

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterannabakescakes

Sunday Sweets are my reward for Mondays, because I am a day ahead of you in New Zealand. And today's pictures proved just how much I enjoy your blog!

So will you be celebrating the month of Sept-ombre? We are currently in July, so first we have to get through Borgust, where supporters of Borgust must dress as very cheap Borg from Star Trek.
Borgust and Sept-ombre are the poor cousins of Capril, which began here in Australia in 2006 as a joke on a radio comedy show, and is now a large fundraising event for research and funding into men's mental health, as is the more famous Movember.

So don't forget -
Fanuary, where one carries a hand fan
Fezuary, where one wears a fez
Smarch. No one likes Smarch
Capril, where one swirls on a cape. Or a towel.
DisMay, where one loses enthusiasm for all these themed months
Hoon, where one "hoons around" (an Aussie term for noisy, idiot drivers disturbing the peace)
July. A rest month
Borgust
Sept-ombre
Rocktober, where one only listens to rock music
Movember
Peacember, where one must eat one's peas every day.

Wonderful, absolutely wonderful cakes, stunning and elegant. Some of them a bit more over the top but, not tacky. I love how they managed to create an amazing effect just by playing with the colours.

See JLo? This is the way to go... well if you wanted to be elegant. Silly me. Never mind.

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterM.

So much talent. Love the bird bath one.

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJane

(See, Steampunk doesn't have to be brown...)

i wish more people would get that memo. especially, companies that put out steampunk clothes.

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

Are those real (or silk) orchids on the next-to-last cake? If not, the decorator has mad skills!

July 15, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdeb

In polymer clay, we call it "making a Skinner Blend" named after Judith Skinner who came up with the concept for clay projects. Always beautiful and elegant!

July 16, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHippieWise

I need a snowglobe with mini versions of ALL these cakes. Stat!
