But speaking of kids, I was sure that Jen had put this Little Mermaid cake in here by mistake, because I totally remember when this movie came out! It can't be that old.

At least, that's what I've heard. This movie may have traumatized me as a child; I still haven't even seen the entire thing. Great cake, though! His ragged little ears are my favorite - they're so cute and non-murderous.

How amazing is this? It would be an impressive cake if it stopped with the globe, but there are so many other great details, from Jareth's sneer down to the tiny arrows on the stone path. So cool.

I don't know what's more amazing, the insane amount of detail on this cake, the fact that it was made with modeling chocolate instead of fondant, or, I don't know, that it freaking GLOWS?

Sooooo glad to know that I am not the only person who was traumatized by Gremlins back in the day. Thanks to devilish older brothers, I am terrified of that movie and can't watch it. I last tried to watch it all the way through back in 2004 and as soon as a gremlin came on screen, i shrieked, fell to the floor and covered my eyes, sobbing hysterically till my husband turned the TV off. I actually scooted past this cake quickly and then cautiously looked at it from the bottom up, in case I saw green and terrifying instead of brown and cute.

But I was a little disappointed that there was no "ET the Extra-Terrestrial"cake as that is the first movie I think of when think of 80s movies.
Love them all as I am a 70's baby, these films covered my tween and teen years! Epic!

Lindsey, thank you for so many lovely sweets to look at today. I've been grading 5-6 hours a day for almost a week straight (my own fault, really - all these papers I've been assigning) and my eyeballs were on fire. Until the "As You Wish" cake put them out.
Man, that's ambiguity for you right there.
In fondant baby news, first photo shoot was a success. Planning on doing more variety shots before releasing them into the wild.
I was traumitized by Gremlins too. I STILL think that "Do you hear what I hear" is the creepiest song evah!

Cute little Gizmo! Don't feel bad, Katie B. "Gremlins" was one of the movies that inspired the PG-13 rating. People were upset at the violence in the PG-rated movie.
Sometimes I think that the movies were the only good part of the 80s.

1) It pains me that someone confused The Princess Bride with the Princess Diaries. Barf.
2) That Millennium Falcon is just unreal! Amazing!
3) These are a lot of fun! I'm actually an 80s baby so I didn't watch most of these as a child, but my (older) husband has forced me to watch all his favorite 80s movies over the past few years. (Although I have yet to see Gremlins...after these comments I don't know if I should...)
I've been married for ten years, but I never had an actual wedding cake. Does that mean I can still ask my husband for the As You Wish one...? Because ohmygosh, that is INCONCEIVABLY cute! ;-)

Star Wars came out in June 1977, so this Millennium Falcon must be from a sequel. Classic stuff there for sure!

That said, Oooooooh, pretty! I love Love LOVE the As You Wish cake! And the Millennium Falcon cake... No way. That totally isn't cake. How in the world? No.
I love the 80's cakes! It should be a thing. So much to choose from! Just sayin'.
I'm not getting married anytime soon (that I'm aware of), but if I were, the As You Wish cake would HAVE to be my wedding cake... it's perfect - clean, simple, elegant. And that it includes my favorite quote from my favorite movie, well, what could be better??? Absolutely gorgeous.
I am SO happy there are others who are as terrified of those Gremlins as I am. One of the guys who built them has one on display at the PA Renn Faire. I can't go within 20 feet of the entrance!
Looks like they went with the replacement Jennifer with the BTTF cake.
I was 5 when my Grandma took me to see Gremlins at the theater. She thought it was about a cute little stuffed animal guy... YEAH........ NO. Needless to say I freaked out and started screaming and she quickly took me running out of the theater. Yes, it is NOT a PG movie!
I am also not getting married any time soon but I want the As You Wish It cake too!
I am firmly planted in the "I've never seen Gremlins" camp too. Not a fan of scary movies at all! I have a friend that forced me to watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I spent pretty much the entire movie with my face covered up! (and asking her to tell me when the scary parts were over... she FAILED at that...BIG TIME!!!)
The fact that The Little Mermaid is 24 years old just makes me want to cry :-(

This post reminded me of an amazing book I just read. The CW team and all you awesome CW/Epbot fans NEED to read it: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. John Scalzi's review says "Imagine that Dungeons and Dragons and an '80s video arcade made hot, sweet love and their child was raised in Azeroth." This book is a must read if you like...anything - the 80's, video games, American pop culture, really really well-written stories, captivating plot likes. I could not put it down.

So, so beautiful. From the simply elegant As You Wish cake to the mind-bogglingly intricate Millenium Falcon-I love them all!
I wasn't traumatized by Gremlins...I didn't LOVE it, but what I have always remembered about it (aside from 'Don't feed them after midnight") is that the dad is played by Hoyt Axton - the man who wrote "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog". I thought that was the coolest thing ever!
Loved all the featured works of art, but I have gotta say - the Millennium Falcon really takes the cake. (ducks and runs...) ;)
Now that you've made me all nostalgic for the 80s, I'd be curious to know if anyone has seen cakes based on ABC's Schoolhouse Rock. That's what defines the 80s for me! (I type this while singing Conjunction junction, what's your function?)

Thx Lindsey and Cake Wrecks for featuring my "Terminator" cake. Funny story, We never got to cut into the head of the cake at my friend's party. So she decided to store in the fridge. She eventually had to eat it earlier then expected, because she kept freaking herself every time she open the fridge and the t-800 was staring right at her. lol
I think my only problem with the Back to the Future Cake is that they included the apostrophe in "we're," yet didn't include it in "Don't." It almost makes it a Cake Wreck for me. Almost.

i am only young but i watched all of these films when i was a child the laybrinth being my fave my get alaybrinth cake for my next birthday!
Sorry I am trying to catch up on all the wrecks! But, I loved the Princess Bride tiered cake! It was especially appropriate as my husband is wearing his Inconceivable tee-shirt looking over my shoulder.
While each of these cakes are beautiful and charming, I just can't stop looking at that Falcor. That cake almost makes up for his craptastic treatment in the third film.
I agree with you completely; all cakes should have a luck dragon on them. Just think of how many of the wrecks on this site would be improved to the point of being mostly presentable? Like anyone is going to notice the piles of fecal icing and lopsided pillars when there's an adorable Falcor to grab your attention.
I saw the Labyrinth cake and I could seriously feel my heart beating in my chest. BUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUM.
It is the greatest movie in the world.
