What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: 80s Movie Night

What's that you say? You want a Sunday Sweets post based on the greatest movies of all time? Or at least, the greatest movies of the '80s?

By Miso Bakes

As you wish.

That's right, buttercup, get ready for some eighties movie madness, starting with these sweets based on The Princess Bride - although I hope you've already figured that out by now.

By GeekSweets

It's just that I was looking for the DVD at a store recently, and the clerk literally said, "Ummmmm, is that the one with Anne Hathaway?"

Kids.

But speaking of kids, I was sure that Jen had put this Little Mermaid cake in here by mistake, because I totally remember when this movie came out! It can't be that old.

By Emma Jayne Cake Design

Holy crab legs, this movie is 24 years old.

How crazy to think that we're now living in Marty Mcfly's future. And look, here he is!

By Black Cherry Cake Company, now Little Cherry Cake Company

The baker really captured him perfectly. I'd recognize that puffy vest and wispy hair from a decade away.

Plus, how awesome are the little fondant flames behind the DeLorean?

Almost awesome enough for me to forget that I still don't have a hoverboard.

Hey, are you a Tom Cruise fan? A Val Kilmer fan? An edible sunglasses fan? If so, then I've got the cake for you:

By The Designer Cake Company

Such military precision! I'd expect nothing less from a Top Gun cake.

But I have bad news: the Terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever.

Until we eat it!

By Mike, aka Flickr user psychobean

Made with a Wilton skull pan and a metric ton of talent. So clever.

And speaking of cyborg assassins ...

By Clares Cakes

Ok, fine, so Inspector Gadget isn't exactly the same thing.
(And not technically a movie, unless you count the live-action film from 1999 - which you really, really shouldn't. - Jen)

But I can't believe we've come this far without mentioning the most quintessential '80s movie of all, Gremlins!

By Cake Rhapsody

At least, that's what I've heard. This movie may have traumatized me as a child; I still haven't even seen the entire thing. Great cake, though! His ragged little ears are my favorite - they're so cute and non-murderous.

Other things I ain't afraid of: no ghosts!

Submitted by Carey-Anne, made by Very Unique Cakes

Not with the Ghostbusters around, at least! I love that this cake is for a five-year-old. Who needs Spongebob when you can have Slimer?

But here's something I need: a teensy tiny topiary floating over everyone's favorite Goblin King:

Also by Black Cherry Cake Company - which has an even larger & more detailed Labyrinth cake here!

How amazing is this? It would be an impressive cake if it stopped with the globe, but there are so many other great details, from Jareth's sneer down to the tiny arrows on the stone path. So cool.

You know what?
That last cake reminded me of the babe.
What babe?
This one:

By Cake Central member Kayla1505

Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. A beauty in black and white! Whit-whoo! (That was me typing out the sound of a wolf-whistle. Not as easy as you'd think).

Now, I'm not sure if this stunner inspired by The Neverending Story is a wedding cake or not ...

By Art Cake

...but I can't think of a better way to start a new life together than with a luck-dragon on your cake! Can you? In fact, we should probably just start putting Falcors on all our cakes. Weddings, birthdays, graduations, Falker Satherhoods. All Falcor-worthy.

And finally, the '80s movie cake to end all '80s movie cakes (and especially appropriate since yesterday was Star Wars day!)

Photo by Rebel Belle Weddings, Cake by The Butter End Cakery

The Millenium Falcon!

I don't know what's more amazing, the insane amount of detail on this cake, the fact that it was made with modeling chocolate instead of fondant, or, I don't know, that it freaking GLOWS?

I hope it rocked your universe as much as it did mine!

Sooooo glad to know that I am not the only person who was traumatized by Gremlins back in the day. Thanks to devilish older brothers, I am terrified of that movie and can't watch it. I last tried to watch it all the way through back in 2004 and as soon as a gremlin came on screen, i shrieked, fell to the floor and covered my eyes, sobbing hysterically till my husband turned the TV off. I actually scooted past this cake quickly and then cautiously looked at it from the bottom up, in case I saw green and terrifying instead of brown and cute.

In love with ghostbuster and back to the future cake :D

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

The cakes of my childhood! Love 'em all.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaggie

I love the Princess Bride cupcakes! I still think there should be a Sunday Sweets featuring all cupcakes :)

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Those cakes are amazing. I love them all :-)

But I was a little disappointed that there was no "ET the Extra-Terrestrial"cake as that is the first movie I think of when think of 80s movies.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMiA

Love them all as I am a 70's baby, these films covered my tween and teen years! Epic!

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDorene

Yeah, Little Mermaid came out closer to the moonlanding, than today. Sucks (well, at least I wasn't around for the moonlanding, how's that for old?"

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Lindsey, thank you for so many lovely sweets to look at today. I've been grading 5-6 hours a day for almost a week straight (my own fault, really - all these papers I've been assigning) and my eyeballs were on fire. Until the "As You Wish" cake put them out.

Man, that's ambiguity for you right there.

In fondant baby news, first photo shoot was a success. Planning on doing more variety shots before releasing them into the wild.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

I was traumitized by Gremlins too. I STILL think that "Do you hear what I hear" is the creepiest song evah!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBella

Gorgeous cakes! I totally want the princess bride cupcakes!

Sorry to correct you, but Marty's future is actually Oct 21, 2015... The 2013 photo going around is a hoax. I went and checked the movie to be sure!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer A

May the fourth bee with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i loved the never ending story cake

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElphaba Thropp

Cute little Gizmo! Don't feel bad, Katie B. "Gremlins" was one of the movies that inspired the PG-13 rating. People were upset at the violence in the PG-rated movie.

Sometimes I think that the movies were the only good part of the 80s.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea H.

"Weddings, birthdays, graduations, Falker Satherhoods. All Falcor-worthy."

Don't you mean Falcor-Satherhood? *duck and run*

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

I need Dread Pirate Roberts cupcakes at all my future birthdays.

And The Little Mermaid is still technically 23-- slightly less terrifying. :)

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZylaa

I need that 'as you wish" wedding cake. Quick, somebody propose to me!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlaura

1) It pains me that someone confused The Princess Bride with the Princess Diaries. Barf.
2) That Millennium Falcon is just unreal! Amazing!
3) These are a lot of fun! I'm actually an 80s baby so I didn't watch most of these as a child, but my (older) husband has forced me to watch all his favorite 80s movies over the past few years. (Although I have yet to see Gremlins...after these comments I don't know if I should...)

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

I've been married for ten years, but I never had an actual wedding cake. Does that mean I can still ask my husband for the As You Wish one...? Because ohmygosh, that is INCONCEIVABLY cute! ;-)

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

Laura, will you marry me? I'm already in a heterosexual marriage, but you could sue me for breach of promise later. After you get your cake.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

The good:: These cakes are just awesome! I really love that Little Mermaid one, especially.
The bad: I feel old. Very, very old.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

Laura, will you marry me? I hope you don't mind I'm a heterosexual female so it will be just for the cake.

Re: Naomi's Falcor-Satherhood... How about a Millenium Falcor?

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKiraela

For Karen, I was around for the moon landing! I am not THAT old, yet! Once you break the half-century mark, you realize you have a long way to go, at least you pray you do... lol

Now, for the cakes. Wow, wonderful, great, fantastic, enjoyed them all. Being a BIG sci-fi fan, I have to say I was most impressed by the Millenium Falcon cake! I appreciate the rest, but WOW! The Millenium Falcon has got to be my favorite. Now, what kind of cupcakes would I have to go with it?!

As always, enjoyed the cakes and the comments.

Yeah, the artistry is wonderful. Still wouldn't want to eat anything covered in fondant. Blech.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJeneric

Star Wars came out in June 1977, so this Millennium Falcon must be from a sequel. Classic stuff there for sure!

Gotta love the Neverending Story cake. Fantastic!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMouse

First, sorry, this isn't a proposal to Laura. I'm sure you're perfectly nice, but no. And for the record, I think you can have any cake you want, wedding or not. :)

That said, Oooooooh, pretty! I love Love LOVE the As You Wish cake! And the Millennium Falcon cake... No way. That totally isn't cake. How in the world? No.

I love the 80's cakes! It should be a thing. So much to choose from! Just sayin'.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

I'm not getting married anytime soon (that I'm aware of), but if I were, the As You Wish cake would HAVE to be my wedding cake... it's perfect - clean, simple, elegant. And that it includes my favorite quote from my favorite movie, well, what could be better??? Absolutely gorgeous.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAddie

I am SO happy there are others who are as terrified of those Gremlins as I am. One of the guys who built them has one on display at the PA Renn Faire. I can't go within 20 feet of the entrance!

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJessica F

Looks like they went with the replacement Jennifer with the BTTF cake.

May 5, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

I was 5 when my Grandma took me to see Gremlins at the theater. She thought it was about a cute little stuffed animal guy... YEAH........ NO. Needless to say I freaked out and started screaming and she quickly took me running out of the theater. Yes, it is NOT a PG movie!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJenn Everett

I am also not getting married any time soon but I want the As You Wish It cake too!
I am firmly planted in the "I've never seen Gremlins" camp too. Not a fan of scary movies at all! I have a friend that forced me to watch the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and I spent pretty much the entire movie with my face covered up! (and asking her to tell me when the scary parts were over... she FAILED at that...BIG TIME!!!)
The fact that The Little Mermaid is 24 years old just makes me want to cry :-(
So many great 80's movies, so many great 80's cakes! Thanks Lindsey!
@Haiku Joy ~ We get a link to the photo shoot, right??? I mean, we're all Auntie's and Uncle's here so it's only right!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

very cool. although the terminator head cake & slimer on the ghostbusters cake are kind of creepy.

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

This post reminded me of an amazing book I just read. The CW team and all you awesome CW/Epbot fans NEED to read it: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. John Scalzi's review says "Imagine that Dungeons and Dragons and an '80s video arcade made hot, sweet love and their child was raised in Azeroth." This book is a must read if you like...anything - the 80's, video games, American pop culture, really really well-written stories, captivating plot likes. I could not put it down.

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLauren

Oh my......I absolutely love the Little Mermaid cake. ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE!!!!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarb

The real question is, does the Goblin King on that cake have the epic cod piece?

Don't tell me you didn't wonder about that either!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterThe Black Dog

So, so beautiful. From the simply elegant As You Wish cake to the mind-bogglingly intricate Millenium Falcon-I love them all!

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJust Andrea

I wasn't traumatized by Gremlins...I didn't LOVE it, but what I have always remembered about it (aside from 'Don't feed them after midnight") is that the dad is played by Hoyt Axton - the man who wrote "Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog". I thought that was the coolest thing ever!

Loved all the featured works of art, but I have gotta say - the Millennium Falcon really takes the cake. (ducks and runs...) ;)

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterkrunchifrog

Now that you've made me all nostalgic for the 80s, I'd be curious to know if anyone has seen cakes based on ABC's Schoolhouse Rock. That's what defines the 80s for me! (I type this while singing Conjunction junction, what's your function?)

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNancy

Absolutely amazing work, I wish I could do half of the art work, Just love all of them.I don't mind being in a cake but I prefer brown or brunette hair thank you, lol. (Julie) Hope you are making tons of money making these cakes.

May 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMay 6, 2013, Julie

Thx Lindsey and Cake Wrecks for featuring my "Terminator" cake. Funny story, We never got to cut into the head of the cake at my friend's party. So she decided to store in the fridge. She eventually had to eat it earlier then expected, because she kept freaking herself every time she open the fridge and the t-800 was staring right at her. lol

May 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMike

I think my only problem with the Back to the Future Cake is that they included the apostrophe in "we're," yet didn't include it in "Don't." It almost makes it a Cake Wreck for me. Almost.

May 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

Has there ever been a Buckaroo Banzai Cake?

May 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterB. Maggie

You remind me of the babe
What babe?
The babe with the power
What power?
The power of voodoo
Who do?
You do
Do what?
Remind me of the babe... ha ha!

I wasn't around in the 80's and I even know what the princess bride movie is...
Sad...

May 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

i am only young but i watched all of these films when i was a child the laybrinth being my fave my get alaybrinth cake for my next birthday!

May 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlauren

Sorry I am trying to catch up on all the wrecks! But, I loved the Princess Bride tiered cake! It was especially appropriate as my husband is wearing his Inconceivable tee-shirt looking over my shoulder.

July 10, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShoshana

While each of these cakes are beautiful and charming, I just can't stop looking at that Falcor. That cake almost makes up for his craptastic treatment in the third film.

I agree with you completely; all cakes should have a luck dragon on them. Just think of how many of the wrecks on this site would be improved to the point of being mostly presentable? Like anyone is going to notice the piles of fecal icing and lopsided pillars when there's an adorable Falcor to grab your attention.

July 14, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTifa

I saw the Labyrinth cake and I could seriously feel my heart beating in my chest. BUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUM.
It is the greatest movie in the world.
Second best? The Princess Bride.
Third best? Back to the Future.
BUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUMBUM.
THANK YOU.
