What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

I've Got A Baaaad Feeling About This...

"I'm sorry, what did you say you wanted on your cake, again?"

"Right, but didn't you want it written a certain way?"

"Ah, that was it! Ok, nooo problem.

"Now, what kind of decorations would you like?"

"Good, good, and what kind of cake?"

"Ok, great! I've got the order all written up, so you can pick up your cake tomorrow. And don't you worry; our baker puts the rest of us to shame." [wink]

The Next Day:

Thanks to Ashley S., Daniel S., Kelsey L., Dan K., & Jake H. who could, like, LITERALLY eat an entire cake right now.

Sung to "Happy Birthday" (if you don't sing it out loud, you don't have to pay royalties)

Happy Birthday, that's it.
Write some Spanish on it
Add a paw print on chocolate
"I'm not paying for it."

There's no song for it, but Happy 54th Anniversary, Mom and Dad!

No entiendo por qué la gente se siente obligada a quejarse cuando consiguen exactamente lo que pedimos. ¡En serio! Si desea una interpretación más artístico de su solicitud, hacer un dibujo maldita. De todos modos, me encanta (la torta.)

In EngliSh.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

@Sharyn -- that's another literal LOL for this post
Is that last one photoshopped, or did they actually, truly, put (cake) on the cake?? In frosting? On purpose?

Thank god they labelled that cake "cake" or I never would have figured it out it wasn't a cardboard box with icing on it.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHolly Folly

Another coup Sharyn!

These are my very favorite kinds of cake wrecks. The stupidity and lack of initiative in failing to call the person placing the order to ASK if that's what they meant, really amazes me!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

Today is my birthday and this post couldn't be more perfect. Love it. =D

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCandace

It took me way to long to figure out that said Spanish.

Happy Aniversity Mr. and Mrs. Sharyn's parents!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

Yep, Literal Wrecks, still funny.

And cringe-worthy.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErica

Ahhh literal lol's classic :D how do they know to breathe :P Sharyn hehehe :D

What's the deal with the lettering on the Spanish cake? It's a wreck no matter which way you look at it, but about half the letters are nicely done and the other half are all lumpy.

The Comic Sans on the last one is a nice touch.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWill

So what kind of medication was the second baker on when they piped that message? It kind of reminds me of the times I used to fall asleep while writing in my journal and the ink would blot in one spot for a little too long. I just hope that the picture was taken two weeks after the recipient picked up the cake; because that stale, cracking frosting is nasty!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterHeather

I like that last one. The paw prints are arranged neatly, the (cake) is understated, but correctly spelled. The parenthesis give it a bit of an ironic/sarcastic touch to offset the sweetness of the red (cherry? strawberry?) glaze.

Happy birthday in Spanish is feliz cumpleanos, with that little squiggle over the n. You're welcome

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBea

The lettering on that Spanish cake takes me back to my college electronics class *cough* *cough* years ago. It reminds me of wires and capacitors. What a strange way to letter a cake!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

RE: the comments about the last pic; I'm 99% certain that's a pawprint design and comic sans lettering printed on edible paper. Not glaze or frosting. (Edible paper makes it even more of a wreck for being lazy AND ewww edible paper)

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDetronyx

why in the world is it that half the baker population can make really amazingly complex and beautiful cake-sculptures, while the other half appears to be front runners for the coming zombie apocalypse?

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDoug Frazier

@Detronyx: You have confirmed my worst fear. I thought that last cake looked like it was decorated with edibke paper, too.

The frosting on the second cake looks like it has a bad case of diarrhea. Yuck.

At least they're all spelled correctly. But if you're copying the instructions, why can't you FOLLOW them?

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

I desperately want a cake like this for one of my birthdays, I would laugh and laugh and not let anyone eat it ever! Cake Wrecks has ruined me, all I want are wrecks now!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

What is interesting about these cakes, is that they appear to be well made (relatively speaking, obviously they will never appear on Sunday Sweets) until some idiot is allowed to ruin them by adding the message.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStephen Barker

Anyone else thinking the first cake is for someone whose doctor has just given him or her less than 12 months max??

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMadison

Why are there what appear to be water droplets on the lid of first one (upper right corner)? I can't really tell if it's on the outside or condensation on the inside. The second option is weirder, because that could imply that something was put in there breathing, or at least warm. =^o.0^=

Happy Birthday, Candace (in Spanish). :)
This is my favorite kind of wreck. 'A paw print' is my favorite, especially with the random comma.

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIheartcakewrex

Ah! My favorite kind of wrecks. I love these so much!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKW

They walk amongst us, etc etc etc

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Sendingtheclowns, I was worried that those droplets might be from a sneeze!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I don't know why but out of all those what cracked me up the most was the little comma on the "a paw print," cake. I will forever be on pause (or paws?!.,) now with that comma there,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,sigh

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKatrina

Is it possible that they got the graphic for that last cake as a sample from the Internet, and didn't pay for the real one? That would explain the (cake) in the middle!

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterErin

I have come to believe that whomever is writing on these cakes knows their letters and can copy them, but they can't read. Why else would anyone do this?

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLiz

I spent way too long thinking cake #2 said "Happy Birthday in Spottish". At least, I thought that explained the spotty lettering.

As I read this post, my 3-year-old son sits next to me watching Blue's Clues. He was thrilled with the final cake and pointed enthusiastically, saying "it has clues on it!"

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

My bf brought up a good point to me. He said WalMart and other stores with bakeries want the cheapest workers. That could b the reasoning behind the bad frosting job, but ok baked cake. Sry if this doesn't make much since. I'm fighting a cold. But u get the gest

December 30, 2013 | Unregistered Commenteradair

Lol! Are we even sure the cake underneath is really cake at all? Heck for all I know wreckerators could be hiding a fruit cake under all that icing lol.

December 31, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

I think the last one is sort of cute in a hipstery way! LOVE it!

December 31, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterha ha ha ha ha

@Jodi: ("I was worried that those droplets might be from a sneeze!") Oh, GROSS! That's the most disgusting thing I never even thought of! Good job! =^~.~^=

December 31, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

@adair We had a very smart, talented cake decorator working in the bakery at our Wal Mart. She quit because they wouldn't let her decorate cakes. Take that as you will. :D

January 1, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMoe

Been looking at that Spanish cake for a while, and I think the decorator was displeased with the decision to make the 'D' a capital in the word, 'Birthday', and was trying to come up with a way to make it look intentional-like some fonts with certain letters are a little larger or differently shaped than the others in a given word.
Then, I think they began adding dots around the line work on other letters, in an attempt to try and make everything even out, based on the initial mistake with the 'D'. But, as we can see, the whole thing, from decoration to message accuracy, it's a total wreck! XD

The first one reminded me of Squidward giving Spongebob that pie-bomb. "Dear Spongebob, Well. here you go". Heehee.
