What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Minion Mashup

Ever since I first saw "Despicable Me," I've been telling everyone that what I really need are minions.

(By Kidacity)

(And that unicorn. He's so fluffy I'm gonna DIE!)

Well, apparently I'm not the only one who thinks a few minions would make everything work a whole lot better.

Maybe it's time the minions stepped out of their subordinate roles and fulfilled their true destinies!

For example, I think minions would make great superheroes. I mean, look at these guys:

(By Sugarnomics Cake Studio Guam)

Aren't they marvels?

(You'd have to be totally Loki to take them on.)

Besides, minions are naturally flea-resistant:

(By Tessa Tina Cakes)

... so ol' Wolverinion there would be a lot less likely to get itchy at an awkward moment and accidentally give himself a close shave.

Seriously. Don't you agree we need more minions fighting for truth, justice and the American way?

(By Cecilia's Custom Sugar Art)

Super. (Hey, we don't know where minions came from. It could have been Krypton.)

I've always considered minions alien in origin, so it really wouldn't be that big a surprise to find they have a few intergalactic cousins:

(By Wooden Heart Cakes)

The farce is strong in this one.

Or maybe they took the Police Box and went on a little planetary road trip.

(By The Bunny Baker)

Go ahead and blink -- I'm pretty sure you'll be fine.
(Did anyone else blink away a few tears during the 50th Anniversary special? Uh, me neither... *sniff*)

They might have even visited the Monster's Inc. world.

(By Cakes-n-Crafts)

Not that I'm trying to sully anyone's reputation...

Of course, they could be plain old earth creatures who got hit with a minion ray or had a strand of DNA go out of whack. They could just be regular -- well, relatively regular -- guys with regular jobs.

(By My Sweet Obsession)

Somebody has to make sure the trains run on time.

Heck, a few minions working at Disney could make it a Whole New World.

(Baker unknown. Anybody know who made this fantastic cake?)

To start with, there'd be a lot more songs featuring banana karaoke.

A little minion DNA might even make Cartman more iconic.

(By Ivy Jane's Bakery)

Of course, it might also give him access to Gru's arsenal.

Maybe not...

You know, I'm feeling pretty good about all the ways minions could be integrated into my life.

What about you guys?

(By My Sweet Obsession)

Heeeyyy. How you doin'?

Sweet.

YAY! I LOVE MINIONS!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Seriously loving the one Princess Minion up front that has the glasses for two eyes, but only one eye. It is just too perfect. Awesome post today! Thank you guys!

The Cartman minion sells the whole gallery. Who knew minions would fit into the superhero world so flawlessly?

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercatspaw66

Minions are fabulous. And minion cakes...well, does it get any better. Makes me wish I had a birthday coming soon.

P.S. Saw a pic of a pumpkin this year done as a minion. Used a canning jar lid for the glasses lens. Adorable.

Bring on more Minions!

Would it make you so giddy with excitement that you would squeal like a little girl if I told you there was a "Minions" movie due out next year? Because I know I sure did!

Check out the details at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2293640/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1.

Aww tooo much cuteness :D

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

I would love to have a BUNCH of minions and wouldn't care what they looked like as long as they did what I told them to do! (One would have to look like me so it could go to work for me) No more cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping or other borrrring routine tasks. When can they start?!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGail

Minions! Love it! And so nice to see them done well, because the possibilities for wrecky minions are a little scary.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

I'll be one of your minions, Sharyn. Just say the word.

I got to the end of this blog and thought where are the disasters? These cakes were made by people who know what they are doing.

I have only recently found your blog, I cannot believe that all the cakes you show are made by professional bakers. Well meaning friends or relatives whose ambition exceeds their skills or talent seem more likely.

As someone who lives in the UK where we are told that the United States is superior in customer service, after looking at some of the cakes you feature I am beginning to have my doubts.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to future blogs.

Stephen Baker, wrecks are posted on weekdays and then Sunday is given over to nice cakes, just to reassure us that the cake world isn't entirely comprised of wrecks. It's always fun to see the theme for the beautiful Sunday Sweets, and a massive relief after the Monday through Friday offerings!

I think we all need some minions in our lives, especially adorable cakey ones -- although I do wonder regularly who has the willpower to actually cut into the beautiful Sunday cakes!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

@Stephen - First of all we're so glad you've joined all of us who are addicted to Cake Wrecks! Every Sunday Jen and her crew feature "Sunday Sweets" - which gives them a chance to showcase some of the really outstanding cakes. Now then, you have to understand that while there are a lot of really, really talented and awesom decorators out there, there are also a lot of really bad ones. Some of them are at supermarket chain stores who I think basically hire anyone to decorate the cakes. Some of them are done by independent bakeries where maybe that particular decorator just doesn't have a good grasp of the English language (or spelling, or reading instructions, or knowing their colours....). Some of them are done by professional bakers who are good... but not great, but seriously overestimate their capabilities and promise the clients something that they just can't deliver.

And sometimes I think they do up these cakes and honestly think they look good. I've seen some pretty atrocious things in display cases.

My birthday is Friday. Just saying :-)

The first cake made me think of the fact I've never watched Despicable Me 2. Neeeeegghhhhh.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenter-Unknown-

The princess minions cake is based off of a Brianna Garcia art piece (though I don't know the baker) The original art looks like this: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l97zh4eXdU1qz9qooo1_500.jpg (and has been spread far and wide across the internet without the artist's name attached, which is sad, because she's brilliant)

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSterling

We just watched this yesterday, and i too love agnes and the unicorn !!! he's so FLUFFY!!! Even posted on FB about it lol LOVE IT!!!!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterladyrani

These are some seriously squee-worthy cakes. The superheroes and Wolverine literally made me LOL. So, so cute!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGena

Gru built the Minons himself. My dad pointed out that the plans are posted on the back wall of the girls' bedroom the first time Gru is putting them to bed. ^_^

Youngest Daughter wore her "The Minions Have The Phone Box" shirt (yes, there is such a shirt and yes, she has it, by delighted request) and my TARDIS laplander hat (again by request) to her fourth-grade Share Day. Only one girl got it. Shae-Lin is now her boon Companion.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Holy moly this is awesome.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBrooke

Are any of these bakers in the UK? All of them are A-MAZ-ING :) :)

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBecky Rideout

Minions are so wonderfully VERSATILE! And obviously very delicious.

I wondered what they eat. Who could blame them if they're cannibalistic?

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermouse

Thanks for the explanation.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStephen Barker

@Stephen Barker, let me add my welcome. I think you'll find that this is not only a great place to get a few weekday laughs and Sunday awwwws, but a very positive community as well. It's like a little twisted, gleeful family.

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAngela

@Sterling, the princess cartoon is signed in the lower left - Brianna Garcia. She is a Disney cast member http://briannacherrygarcia.deviantart.com/

"Mrrp, mrrp MRRRP, mrrp-mrrp!!!!!"

(Translation: Oh. My. God... THEY KILLED KENNY!!!!")

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

this just might be my favourite sunday sweets ever!

December 1, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterraeb23

Is it bad that I wish the red headed minion on the princess cake was a character named Kairi instead of Ariel? Because if it were Kairi, that'd be all seven of the princesses from the Kingdom Hearts games.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDreaming Crazy

A *few* tears? As soon as I saw The Man Himself, I let out a SHRIEK and started weeping. WEEPING, I TELL YOU. I had that rarest of panic attacks, the Oh My God I Am Entirely TOO Happy To Deal With LIFE attack, where The Happy is just overwhelming? No? Just me?

Your Pal,

Storm

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterStorm

I think Ivy Jane's Bakery is in the UK

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSara

Hmmm... How about a "Breaking Bad" Minion? Me want...

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMudhooks

@Julski - I know she's the artist, that's ... what I said. And she's actually a former cast member (I follow her blog, she's an all 'round good person) I just said that I don't know who the BAKER is. Of the cake. Based on Brianna's art.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSterling

I have died and gone to cake heaven! Can't wait until the kids get home from school so I can show them too.

My girls (10&12) are huge Whovians too, but have not seen enough classic episodes to understand why I was crying and smiling and jumping up & down in my theater seat all at the same time! I wish they would have shown the special multiple times in the theater, because I would have walked right out and bought a ticket for the next showing.

December 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLori

Cakes-n-crafts who created the minion inc cake are based in Glasgow, UK.
