What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Creepy Treats!

Well hellooooo there, my unsuspecting mortal friends. This week we are vamping up for everyone's favorite holiday, Halloween! So come along with me for a ride through SCARY CAKE TOWN.
(We're, uh, still working on the name.)

Oh, and make yourself comfortable, as we'll be taking the scenic route:

(By MadHouse Bakes)

Let's start off with a little EYE candy, shall we?

(By Rosebud Cakes)

MWUAH-HA-HAA!
Puns killed me, you know.

All of our residents here are devilishly delicious - IF you're quick enough to get in the first bite:

(By Marina Danovska)

Oh, I'm sorry, do you prefer sheet cakes?

(By letortedecakelo)

Or is calling this a sheet cake too much of a stretch?

If you turn towards the far horizon, you might spot our resident horseman:

(By Mrs. Cake)

Best keep your distance, though; that hollow is a terrible spot to be headed.

This tower, on the other hand, is the height of warm gothic elegance:

(By Amanda MacLeod)

And, look, the family's all here to greet you!

(By Perfect Indulgence Cakes)

Pay no attention to Morris, though; he's just looking for another hand out:

(By CW reader Kathryn S.)

A little birdy told me these skulls are all made from white chocolate:

(By Conjurer's Kitchen)

I do hope all those beaks are securely attached. If not, HEADS WILL ROLL.

Say, would you like to play a little game?

Excellent.

Tag! You're IT!

(By Sliceofheaven1)

AHAHAHAHAA!

Oh, I AM sorry - did my little jest frighten you? Well, not to worry; our little tour is about to come to its permanent conclusion.

But before your departure, may I just say that you remind me of the babe?

The babe with the power.

The power of voodoo!

(By Valerie Bohzkova)

YOU DO!

AHAHAHAHHA!
HAHAHAAAAAAA!

HAHA...ack! *coughcough*

[continued coughing]

Gosh, disembodied creepy laughter really takes it out of you.

Ok. Well.

Get out.

OMG that clown cake is scary-reminds me of Stephen kings IT D: Love the octopus/squid cake :D and all of the cakes today are made by people with scary amounts of talent.

Jeez, a warning before the "It" cake would have been nice. That stupid clown has caused me countless nightmares. *shudder*

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMeghan

Must have the third cake... Just my style!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTimeStopper

Love the Bobbysoxer reference. No one ever knows that.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterRebeccaS

This made me feel like I was back in the Haunted Mansion. Well done, you guys!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterDana

I never got the whole *scary*-clown thing, myself. All I've ever thought of them is that most of them are just so darn STUPID-looking (and/or plain ugly).

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersendingtheclowns

If I ever walked into a party and saw the IT clown cake, I'd be out of there. This is as close to one that I ever want to be. Even then, I jumped when I saw it.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

That cake with the skull ripping the skin off the cake? WOW!! And I LOVE that Gothic tower cake! I'd like to live there, if I could.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

A very creeptastic three hour tour! Eye especially liked all the little hidden details in the 2nd cake.

Kathryn S., loved Morris' dramatic entrance! You are most talented.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterZippy

Is the clown hair made from something edible or is it a wig?

I'm not a big fan of Halloween, but I'm really liking the skull sheet cake with the bleeding roses and the little colorful voodoo doll with the last cake is kind of cute.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

The reason clowns scare so many people is that while they look and move so much like real humans, their faces are so much unlike ours. For more information please google "uncanny valley."

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSarah T

Those are INCREDIBLE!! I only wish I was 1/8th talented as those bakers and decorators!

*whistle*

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAlanna S

The artistry is lovely, isn't it? I just love Sunday Sweets! Nice to see talent on display.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterValerie

When ever I bring in treats to work, co-workers always (most kindly) say "why are you working here when you can make things like that? You should open your own bakery!" And then I see Sunday Sweets...that's why! Crazy talented! I especially loved the skull tearing the fondant cake - amazing.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMovieMom

Fantastic as always. Those are some impressive cakes, and the commentary made me giggle. :)

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTotalFluffster

@normajean: after taking a closer look at the clown cake (i don't fear clowns, so no problem there. spiders though ... ick!) i think the hair is cotton candy. look around the edges where the hair meets the fondant - it is most obvious there. pure genius!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterLcP

OMG!OMG!OMG!!!! Voodoo doll!! Voodoo doll!!!! Ineedit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterVivs

Holy cow! That 4th cake with the skull coming through the cake is about the most fantastically creepy thing I've seen, much less creepiest cake. That's a nightmare right there, that one.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterFM

I was fine until Pennywise showed up.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPeazy

LOVE the Labyrinth reference! Going to have to rent it for my kids now! Ah, nostalgia!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJill M

Awesome cakes. Holy crap Pennywise creeps me out. I'd be too afraid the clown would try to eat me before i could eat it.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

AHHHHHH Pennywise... WHY, WHY WHY?

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBreanna

The skill and artistic talent showcased in Sunday Sweets never fails to amaze me. Thanks for bringing these cakes into my world!

RebeccaS - I loved The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer reference as well! I was kinda shocked to see it!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMellie

Ok - was just scrolling down, la-di-da... ohhhhh, creepy, well done...

OMG IT'S PENNYWISE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HE'S GONNA GET ME! EVERYTHING FLOATS DOWN HERE...

Breathe... breathe... sit back down... breathe.

/golf clap

Well done. Kudos to both the cake artist, and y'all, for burying it far enough down we'd be lulled into complacency so that you could scare the bejezzus out of us...

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKK

For some reason, I really like the single eye on cake #3; that seems to be the perfect touch to me--not incredibly creepy but just spooky enough that you jump a little. And I never got the "evil clown" thing either. I always just wanted to wipe off their makeup, for some reason.

Ahem.
"You remind me of the babe.
The babe with the power.
What power?
The power of voodoo.
Who do?
You do.
Do what?
Remind me of the babe."
DANCE, MAGIC DANCE
(If you're going to insert a reference, say it right. I may have watched this movie a bit too often.)

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

That clown cake is very wrong. i did not need that today. (And I normally don't mind clowns.) I love the bird skull cake though!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTari

Mindy1, the clown cake IS Pennywise from It. You must not have read the Cake Wrecks description that goes with the picture.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKat

It's so nice to see cakes that are _supposed_ to be scarey. (Loved that last one.)

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterOldish Lady

WOW! some creepy stuff there. not to mention a lot of talent. even the one that appears the simplest, #7 (the skulls on black), is way beyond me.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

@RebeccaS & @Mellie: yes, the "remind me of a man" byplay was first used in "The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer" (I loves me some Cary Grant), however most of the CW readers (and Jen) remember it from "Labryinth".

These cakes are true works of art, but I could do without the clown. Well done, though it is.

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

*starts tour while singing This is Halloween*

These are all so fantastic! It's nice to see such talent applied to -

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH PENNYWISE OMFGs GET IT AWAY FROM ME!!

Then the Labyrinth reference made everything all right again. Dance Magic Dance!

October 20, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterE. Anne

Yay! Labyrinth reference! Those are some awesomely scary cakes.

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCynthia

@Kat I just reacted before I read it later :((((((

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMindy1

I have no idea if the Pennywise cake was well-done. I caught a glimpse of crazed eye and sharp tooth and poofy hair and scrolledreallyfast. Smoke might have come out of the mouse wheel. CRAP, I hate that clown.
Love the skull trailing fondant cake. So, that's what I should do when my fondant starts to rip: make it intentional! ;-) And the bird skull cake reminded me of another King book, where one of the characters carries a rook skull with him all the time. Anybody?

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

While I appreciate the artistry, there is absolutely no way I would put any of those things in my mouth. nope nope nope. And before I get any blah-blah about that, let me remind everyone that I'm a goth, not a ghoul. :P

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered Commentergothchiq

@SaraCVT: the quotes WERE done correctly, as stated by David Bowie. It's up to us, the dear readers, to supply the other half of the lyrics :)

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda H.

SONUVA....! You actually made me scream a little and maybe drop the f-bomb at work! Freakin Pennywise! Amazing work, but AAAH!!

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSela

Good old Pennywise, popping up when you least expect it. Why, what's this? A butcher knife? How appropriate. Let's see if you taste as bad as you look.

And that, children, is how you handle a scary clown cake. A cake with a skull emerging from the fondue, however, is a beautiful thing to be treated with respect. And perhaps a scalpel.

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterWaneta

EEEEEE omg omg I made it onto Sunday Sweets! That makes for the awesomest birthday present EVER!

As I recall, the groom actually did name "Morris" at the reception, but I can't remember what it was, just that it was appropriately Cthullic and started with an A. ...also, immediate thought upon seeing the photo: "...huh. Next time I'll have to curl the busting-out fondant over some, looks a little flat that way."

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn S.

I was doing ok until Pennywise O.O After reading the comments I'm curious to know what his hair is made of but certainly not curious enough to scroll back up and look **shudder**

I'll let you know if my heart rate every returns to normal!

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

These are all amazing cakes. That second one, though very well executed, is pretty creepy to me, what with the snakes slithering in and out of the jack-o-lanterns. The skull stretching the fondant and the octopus/squid escaping the cake are both beautifully and artistically crafted, in spite of being very strange subjects. And I chuckled when I saw Pennywise, since I'm not inherently mortified by clowns and Jen included one in her Sunday Sweets post to terrorize those who are - surprise!

Jen and company, thanks for sharing these beautiful and cringe-worthy masterpieces with us!

October 21, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne-Marie

Pennywise just creeps me out, always has. Yet, I can't stop staring at him. Must. devour. clown cake.

October 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

just stunned by the artistry. Got nothin' funny or clever to say. just awed speechless

October 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterrolypolyducky
