What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

The Ten Funniest Name Goofs

Names are tough - there are just so many weird ones out there - so I tend to cut bakers a lot of slack when it comes to misspelling them.

But I'm pretty sure these birthday kids weren't so understanding:

"...and that's how Bobby got his nickname! Now, you two kids get going, and have a nice prom!"

I'm guessing something about this cake is going to rub little Chase the wrong way:

 Ooh. BURN.

Clap your hands if you believe Tink's gonna be ticked.

Now this is just cruel:

And written on a cookie cake, too! Poor Cubby.

This remains one of my all-time favorite name wrecks:

"Look, Stetson! It's almost like you're part of the family!"

Of all the times to mix up your "u"s and "a"s...

Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do!

This is what we call a Freudian piping slip:

It was a bittersweet parting.

Of course, not every name goof results in an insult. Some people even come out ahead:

Way, WAY ahead.

It's doubly unfortunate that these polka dots look a lot more "Turdi" than "Trudi":

What a way to go.

Let's hope Violet doesn't live up to her new nick name.

This "cookie bouquet" was for a baby shower. I'll let you spot the problem:

"Well, I SHOULD HOPE SO."

Thanks to Brian C.,  Elizabeth B., Beth, Laura R., Natalie B., Melissa R., Lacey C., Jennifer S., Kirsten H., Addy L., & Jennie C. for not naming any names.

Hehehe I think half of these were due to bad piping skills, rather than idiocy. The rest were due to idiocy:D

Erm... That's eleven.

There must be some connection between cake #8 and cake #11. There simply must be.

Chubby and Cubby and Tink AND Fink were all members of the old (very, very old) Mickey Mouse club. I remember it distinctly, even though I'm quite sure I hadn't been born yet. That must be what caused the confusion on their cakes.

Sung to “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXFggEzpB7I

Though I’ve tried before to tell her
Of the right way to spell Bobby from the start
Every time that she gets near cake
I just have to realize she is not too smart

Every single thing she spells is tragic
We’ll be calling him “Chafe” from now on
Fink just isn’t feeling Birthday Magic
She’ll be crying when the guest are gone

Do I have to tell the story
Of the feelings hurt by Chubby’s cookie cake?
Though he’s quite a stoic fellah
Stepson wants to see his real name, for Pete’s sake

Every single thing she spells is tragic
Outing someone with a cake is wrong
I imagine I could get quite Bitchie
If I stared at that the whole night long

Every single thing she spells is tragic
Christ, I’ve told you that for oh, so long
She thinks that you named your daughter Turdi
And she’ll never agree that she’s wrong

I resolved to call Vi up
A thousand times today
Ask her not to harry me
In some quite violent way

I stand silent, with tears dripping
Virgin Ann’s mom’s on the phone
Desperation starts to grip me
I must send that baker home

Every single thing she spells is tragic
I apologize to every one
Can’t she realize spelling isn’t magic?
Guess I should have fired her day one

Every single thing she spells is tragic
Seriously, every single one
Maybe she’s a little bit dyslexic?
No, I think she’s really just that dumb.

I came across some interesting names in my pharmacy days (a lady with the first name Howard, a man with the last name Hussey, and heard about a Summer Lovin a la the Grease song).

My daughter's name is Genevieve, which many many people read as "Geneva" for some reason. I guess they just give up halfway through. I am always excited/afraid to see how her name is spelled on cakes, prescriptions, etc. So far nothing CW-worthy, but she's only 5.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermeeshybee

@ N.O'Really Silly that's a bakers 10 or a wreckerators

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpakajack

Having named my daughter Virginia i didn't take into consideration that application form for standardized tests would only allow the 1st 6 letters. Poor kid had to register as Virgin everywhere.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermla314

Hah! My husband gets written up in articles as "Christ" instead of Chris all the time. I think it has something to do with the ST at the start of the last name making it sound like chris-T

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKat

Hm.. Well, I suppose that's what some parents should expect after giving their poor kids goofy names. Stetson? Tink?

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSue

@Sharyn: *silently pushes her office chair back, stands, and applauds wildly* You, madam, are a genius.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

In semi-defense of the first cake, my husband calls me Booby. It's his lovely pet name for me. I can totally see that appearing on a cake in my future. However, because that cake is in today's post, I'm pretty sure that Bobby didn't share the same nickname...until now. :)

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGirlNamedCorrie

No one ever spells my daughter's name right. It's Corrie...not Carrie. Oh wait. I see her post above mine. "HiCorrie!... I mean Booby!" :-)

@meeshybee ~ Oh my goodness. MY full name is Genevieve. Give it time.

(EX: Geneva, Guinevere, Genevere, Genezieze and my personal favorite: Jenevidee. After my mother spelled it for them twice over the phone.)

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEve

There was a girl named Virginia in my high school that took a slightly different path than sweet little Virginia Ann. After Prom, her birthday cake simply said, "Happy Birthday, ia."

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjackwire

I'm sure you are right about "Violent's" cake, but we actually know a guy named Violent. I believe he was a tough Harley biker dude in his youth, but had mellowed to an older but still hardcore Harley rider and small plane pilot when we knew him 5 years ago. Never asked how he got the name!

new rule: when home sick, don't read Cake Wrecks until the next day. laughter really isn't the best medicine. :D
new, absolutely must follow, rule: don't read a Sharyn song until the next day. O.M.G. giggle/snorting multiple times while singing quietly to myself is really, really non-good medicine.
also, Chafe's cake is cute to me and fairly well done (plastic flotsam aside). that may or may not be a result of illness.
I am bravely testing the theory that chocolate cake IS good medicine. I made one for my sister's birthday yesterday and there's leftovers. I'll report back.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

My daughter's name is Brittany so I see the misspelled names quite often. She's never had a misspelled cake, but I work at the grocery store so I can make sure it's spelled correctly. She does get lots of cards addressed to Britney, Britany or even Brittnay, but she's 13 so she cares more about what's inside.

@jackwire, that's too funny! I bet her parents didn't get her that cake though!

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

"Violent and Sloan" sounds like a good name for a punk band. Just sayin'.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

who knows maybe Chubby was his nickname. Then Fink maybe have been a statement of fact rather than a mistake.
My name Denise has been written as Penise and Dense and such.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDenise

Barbara Anne: I'm sorry you're still not feeling better -- I hope the dog is on the mend. Would you consider publishing the results of the chocolate cake theory? Just to satisfy my intellectual curiosity...

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Looks like Bitchie's wreckerator had a stroke while decorating the sides of her cake. I'm going to cut her/him some slack on that one.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaxmom

Tigger and Pooh seem to be doing some chafing.

Years ago, I worked for a guy named Doug. I was still a new employee when I had to order his birthday cake. The preferred bakery was this little Chinese place called Lucky. I picked up the cake and took it back to the office. I opened it to see "Happy Birthday Dung". Fortunately, I am pretty good with an exact o and there were decorations I could lift some strings from. It said Doug before he ever got to see it. Later I told him and he laughed but at the point I was really nervous.

Sorry you're sick Barbara Anne :( How's the chocolate cake working?
Sharyn, good thing my boss ran to the bank because I was sitting here humming todays song ;)
As for the name thing... My daughter's name is Kia (yes, they named a car after her. Wasn't that nice of them?) and almost everyone either spells it wrong or says it wrong.

I'm usually a silent stalker of this blog but had to comment on Sharyn's song today. OUT-STAND-ING!

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChris

My mom's family nickname is 'Chubby' even though she wasn't. And 'stepson' looks spelled correctly to me.

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoJo

As one who writes names on cakes, I ALWAYS ask the spelling - even if the name is Bob. No excuse for these errors.

Re: Fink's cake - it's not a misspelling, it's just missing the "rat" part :)

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCustom Caker

I thought perhaps Barbara Anne was homesick, but that doesn't explain all the medicine references. Hope you're feeling better. Does this mean that Con Crud can spread via the Internet?

#3 Awww, the Midnight Skulker sent the King of Id a cake! Probably won't keep him out of the dungeon, but it's the thought that counts.

#10 A wreckorator with 'issues'. What a soothing concept to contemplate.

Bonus cake: I think I see the thinking here. Why should Mary get all the press?

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

My maiden name is Wulf. When I was a sophomore in high school, we moved to a new house on a cul-de-sac that had a total of six houses. The people whose house we bought were named Wolfe. The people on the corner also were named Wulf. Needless to say, we had TONS of fun with the mail that first year!

My parents and sisters and I all have names that can be spelled several different ways, so we're used to gambling and giggling over what we end up with! But Turdi? And Bitchie? Sigh. . . . .

September 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

At least Cubby's cake looked pretty with roses and all lol. Would hate to think what poor Tink thought of her cake..fink? Unless it's a nickname that is one odd thing to put on a cake. Then again it could be worse and I am sure they are out there waiting to be found.

September 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

I assumed the Chafe cake was for triplets, which would be a really cute way of handling birthdays (as long as the names are actually spelled correctly). But Chase has five candles while the others have three. Was this some medical miracle we never heard about?

September 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarnie

Hahaha, Violent! My (first + middle) name is Cassidy Violet, and my Dad will often jokingly call me Cassidy Violent. xD

September 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStryde

@ Marnie ,
Two of my grandchildren (siblings) share the same bday three years apart. That could easily be the case with one of these being a set of twins . Sympathy for the parents if that is true.

September 11, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpakajack

No, my name is just plain GWEN, not Gwendolyn, Guinevere or Gwyneth. And it's spelled G-W-E- N,
not G-W-E-N-N or G-W-Y-N. And how in the world did some folks come up with Q-U-I-N or (with quizzical look on my face) G-I-V-E-N??? None of these have have manifested themselves in buttercream (yet), but many, many times in print. Not as bad as Turdi, though.

WTG Sharyn!

My brother's nickname as a toddler was, in fact, "Boobie". Believe it or not, it had nothing to do with breasts, but how he said "baby" when I was born.

Also, it's quite unfortunate that "Ritchie" decided he had to spell his name with a "t".

September 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

thanks for the well wishes
regarding chocolate cake as a restorative medicine: there's good news and there's bad news.
good news: I felt better today!
bad news: that means I had to go to work. (sigh)

;)

My name is Tenaya, so I've gotten Tenya, Tanaya (tan-ay-yuh), Teneya (ten-I-uh), Tanya, Tania (tuh-nee-uh), Tanika (still trying to figure that one out) and my personal favorite, Tiffany. For whatever reason, when I meet new people I get called Tiffany more often than not. I don't think my parents realized that no one would be able to say or pronounce my name when they choose it. And for the record, it's TUH-NAY-UH :)

September 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTenaya

Okay, this is bizarre. And it will only make sense to me. Still, I feel that I must share.

My new novel's main character is named.... STETSON. Just in case anybody wondered if anyone would actually name a child "Stetson." I've only heard of ONE other human being on earth named Stetson. (That would be Stetson Kennedy, 1950's civil rights activist who was instrumental in bringing down the Georgia revival of the KKK.) But now it looks like Wreckerator moms give that name to their kids all the time! :)

September 12, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnise

in the second picture why does pooh and tigger look so....x-rated????

September 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternali

Ha! Good to see my little brother's "Stepson" cake make an appearance here. Yes, his name is Stetson. Not Preston. Not Austin. Not Justin. And most definitely not Stepson! Mom named him after John B. Stetson, inventor of the Stetson cowboy hat.

While his name is unusual, you'd think my name, Natalie, would be relatively easy to spell. Nope, I get Natlie, Natile, Natalee...and the worst offender has been Nadalie. I guess I had a touch of a cold when I gave that prescription order over the phone.

October 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNatalie

This reminds me of a professional cake my friend Louise got where they missed the i in her name... I'll see if I can find photographic evidence.

October 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBek

They could have fixed 'Booby' so easily. Just pick up the piping bag again, and add a stem to the 'o'.

October 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarrieVS

Is it just me, or did anyone else see Pooh and Tigger having sex on cake two?

December 31, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSvetlana
