What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Jen's Favorites

No theme this week: just an eclectic mix of some of my favorite submissions that have come in over the past few months.

First, an opening act by Janice of The Electric Mayhem:

By Sweet Ruby Cakes

This cakey rocker chick is blowing my mind. I want to see a slice out of it somewhere, just to prove it's really cake! (And while you're at it, I'd like a life-sized Swedish Chef cake, too, please. BORK BORK.)

Next up, a SUPER adorable cake:

By Amanda R. of The Sweet Treat Leap Cake Shoppe, which I dare you to say three times fast.

I'm digging the cartoony shape of the skyscraper, and just look at those handcrafted figures!

I want them all. Can you just make me a batch of gumpaste superheroes, Amanda? You know, for my desk? I'm not greedy; I'll just take Batman & Robin & Green Lantern & the little Superboy up there. And Spidey. And a few bags of cartoon money. And a balloon or two. But that's it.

Speaking of cute and cartoony...

By The Cake Fairy

Things I love about this cake:

1. Side rainbow of awesomeness
2. 3D hair of fabulosity
3. Picture-perfect piping of punctiliousness

Word.

Gosh, going by my choices so far you'd think I was a thirteen-year-old girl, and not a...um...slightly older girl.

So...

Moving on to my favorite Tinkerbell cake...

By Sweet Ruby Cakes

Look how pretty she is! And check out the flower silhouettes painted on the cake tiers, and the wooden sign, and that bitty little lady bug - so many great details. But really, that handmade Tink steals the show; from her vine-wrapped hair bun to her little shoe pom-poms, she's just perfection. (Hey, would it be weird if someone commissioned a cake just for the topper? Asking for a friend.)

Ok, I'll give you a break from the cutesy cartoon characters now...

Submitted by Cristina S., made by KayLynn Cakes

And show you some cutesy cartoon candy, instead!

Look at those ice cream cone pillars. LOOK AT THEM. And the candy dots border! And the pleated rainbow ribbons! And the lollipops!

Can you get a sugar high from eye candy? Because I think I just did.

Now here's a Sweet I've been waiting to feature for ages:

By Cake Adoration

I'm a big fan of cake artists who use icing like paint, both because it's a rare skill and because it gives the cake a charmingly handcrafted look. This cake is entirely fondant-free, and all the dogs are hand-piped. As if that weren't enough, check out the thin black lines; don't they make it look like a 2D drawing popped off the page?

It's cakes like this that give me the baking itch all over again. Love it.

You guys know I've seen a lot of great cakes, so when I tell you this next one made me gasp with delight, you better believe it's something special.

BEHOLD!

Submitted by Liz C. and made by Devilish Delights

Who recognizes this? (There's a big hint in the placard. Hehe.)

I'm in awe of this cake's construction. It's not easy to make a cake look like it's falling apart without it *actually* falling apart! I'd love to see the interior supports & in-process photos - talk about an engineering feat!

Here's a screen grab of the scene in question, so you can compare:

Pretty bang on, right? I guess you could call this the first Wreck Sweet! (Sweet Wreck?)

Hmm. I think this post could use a little more green, don't you?

By La Bella Torta

"Find me delicious, you will."

I've seen a lot of amazing Yoda cakes lately, but this one is especially charming with its custom cake board and Yoda's great expression and, of course, THOSE EARS. (I would very much like to nom one.)

My faithful Wrecky Minion Julianne has a newborn baby girl in the house, and this past week she's let me and John come over to take pictures of little Ellie for fun. We then got a little carried away buying Ellie cutesy little headbands and bows and dresses and even sewing her a ruffly diaper cover, and I blame my next Sweet on all of that over-the-top baby cuteness:

Submitted by Courtney P. and made by Royal Decadence Cakes

Ruffles and flowers and bows, oh my!!

Not only is that some killer cute detailing, I'm also loving the color choices. Apple green, sky blue, fuchsia, and gold make a surprisingly beautiful combination!

And finally, I really will give you a break from my incessant cute fixation to show you my new favorite steampunk wedding cake:

By Good Gracious Cakes

This beauty has a real Tim Burton vibe to it, and that winged wrench topper looks so much like a bat that it took me a few seconds to realize what it was!

I like how this cake just gets better and better and more detailed the further you move down the tiers. Check out the crazy-cool clock face detail on the purple "suede" tier:

And look at the tiny screwheads or rivets on the bottom lantern tier! Plus that airbrushed glow is easily my favorite part of the whole cake; it's so vivid, and the scrollwork and spider really "pop" against it. Just beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed meandering through my favorite Sweets this week, guys! Next Sunday I think I'll do an Avengers post, so if you bakers out there have a cake you'd like us to consider featuring, please send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

So very pretty!! My 8 y.o. loves the candy cake and I think Tink rocks! Thanks for having this site Jen and John (THoJ). Much love goes into it, and we get much love from it.

I LOVE the side rainbow of awesomeness!! And the candy one? Beautiful! Can I have it for my next birthday? It wouldn't be weird for a thirty something year old to have that right?

P.S. I'm a longtime reader first time commenter and I just wanted to say thanks and keep up the awesome wreckiness :)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

With cakes this gorgeous, who needs a theme? The cartoon candy one is my fave, I think. Like you, I'm in awe of the leaning cake because, dang, keeping that from going over would not be an easy feat. Oh, and save one of Yoda's ears for me. Someone else will have to cut into that cake first, though--on second thought, someone would have to cut into all of these cakes first, because I'd find it too hard to ruin such artistry.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

When you approach the Yoda cake with a knife, does it pull a lightsaber or just deflect your attention with a Jedi mind trick? ("I am not the cake you're looking for.")

These are all wonderful. I want the candy cake for days I'm feeling blue -- not to eat but to stare at -- and my favorite part of the Steampunk cake its the lighting effect. I've actually made something like the Sleeping Beauty cake (but it wasn't on purpose... Oops!) It was blue, though...

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Sometimes I have a hard time believing, that any of these, are actually 'cake'. O_O

Are they really made of cake?

Like can they be eaten?

Were they eaten at some point?

I'd love to see a 'slice cut out, an on a plate' edition of Sunday Sweets, someday.

"Look Mother, it's my life...okay? So if I want to live on a beach and walk around naked...oh..."
Love the Janice cake. Must make note for when I turn 40. (which is closer than I want it to be)

I'm surprised, Jen, that you aren't planning a renewal of vows ceremony right now with John (thoJ) just so that you can have that steampunk cake at the reception.

And thank goodness for that Tinkerbell cake after all of those wrecks the other week. I didn't even notice the flower silhouettes until you pointed them out. It's the tiniest details that make some of these Sweets so awesome.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

Those flowers. That lady-bug. Love the Tinkerbell cake! And after seeing the Janice cake, I want the entire Electric Mayhem cakeified!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

thanks a lot jen....... now i'm hungry :O RAWR

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPandaLove

The sad thing is, most of these cakes are for younger kids and they'll never appreciate them for what they are: pieces of art. To them, it's just cake.

<sigh>.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSue

These are incredible! We spend so much time during the week laughing at the Wrecks that it is easy to forget that there are real artists out there, who take the craft seriously and produce such absolutely stunning work. Thanks, Jen, for sharing the Sunday Sweets, giving us a moment of awe, and reminding us that yes, it can be and is being done right.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermel

I'll be turning 40 this year, but if I had the skills, I would be making that candy cake for myself. I love it! I wouldn't want to share it though- it's just too pretty!

@ Sharyn, the boyfriend loved your comment about the Yoda cake.

Suddenly I have the urge to listen to Weird Al.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

Yes, yes I think you can get a sugar high just from looking at these... thank you for mine! My favorite... that one and that one and that one and that one...

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterakathleen

I loved this post too much! I cannot believe the texture on the Janice cake, and the Sleeping Beauty one made me insanely happy, like almost teary-eyed at how sweet the idea was and the flawless execution. Brilliant.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

I only have one complaint about the Superhero cake: Spiderman is from the Marvel Comics universe, the others are DC. That is all.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCyberjar88

Who wants to grow up when these fun cakes are there for kids? At 72, I'm still enjoying "kid stuff". On a separate note, when I saw the cake marked Sleeping Beauty, I was thinking it was Cinderella themed instead. The broom was my tip-off. Thanks for this site. It is the highlight of my day.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMary Lou Judy

Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em! BUT......how on earth would you cut the leaning cake to serve it??? I'd love to see it :)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLinnie

The candy one was origionally done for the 2012 Wilton yearbook. Instructions are there ;).. I really love the baby shower cake near the bottom.. super cute!! I hope one day a cake of mine will end up on Sunday Sweets!!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily

Squeeeeeee! Tinkerbell AND a darling ladybug on the same cake? Two of my favorite obsessions at once! Of course, if I had that cake, I don't think anyone would have been allowed to actually cut into it...

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLadybug914

Jen, I love your site but I'm sooooooo disappointed--you never show anything buttercreme! Yes, I'm an icing elitist! Fondant is Play-Doh!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

Yay! A cute fondant-free!

That Tinkerbell is awesome too.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErica

That last cake is like Tim Burton and Phil Foglio had a creative love-child. The Nightmare before Girl Genius. Ooooohhhh, that just game me some epic goose bumps. Hee...

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

@ Amy.... uh, I hate to be a nit-picker, but the sixth cake is "entirely fondant-free." Jen is showing the love for buttercream, too!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel T.

@Amy, though it's easier to get that "perfect" look with fondant, there is a cake above without it. I couldn't believe how amazing it looks! Also if you type in fondant free Sunday sweets in the search box above, you'll get a bunch of results back, including: http://www.cakewrecks.com/home/2012/1/29/sunday-sweets-fun-and-fondant-free.html from January. Hope I was helpful. :)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

Also @Emily, thanks for the info! I'll have to find a copy of the yearbook and see how well I do.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

I got a sugar high from all the sweetness :D :D

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

It is the little details that make the difference, the little pom, poms on Tink` shoes are adorable!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLori

I guess you could call this the first Wreck Sweet! (Sweet Wreck?)
i vote for sweet wreck.

BTW it's my birthday today & while i have a very pretty cake today, i'd love to have something like that cartoon candy cake.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterarchersangel

LOVE the cartoon candy cake! That was a definite "ooooohhh!" moment. :-)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh524

CP is haveing a avengers party next week, so that will be a PERFICT time to do that SS post.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteraudrey

I was so pleased to see the Sleeping Beauty cake! (& how on earth does it not fall over?!) That scene was what inspired me to do a "CAKE OR DEATH" mashup with Sleeping Beauty!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37ALyR3kwqw

We only had three bits and we didn't expect such a rush! :)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentersphinooccipital

So now there's a 'sweet wreck', but asserting that there is such a thing as a 'wreck' that is really a Sweet in disguise causes some of us to have to endure a Manilow retrospective from a machine gun-toting cat (how he gets Manilow's voice so right on is a mystery in itself). You enjoy this, don't you. [half-waggle]

I was in the archives the other night. Along with discovering the surname of someone I'm trying to friend on Facebook, I ran across a mention of a couple of commercial fondant upgrades that are said to taste much better than the original variety. I wonder if there is a particular reason why these other fondants are not used more often.

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I love the Clifford the Big Red Dog cake! [The one covered in puppies.] I wonder if there was another cake to go with it, featuring Clifford? It's so cute! :)

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura-Kathleen

That top cake am, is, are and be my new all-time favorite Muppet cake. Sorry, Yoda.
I caught the Sleeping Beauty reference before I even saw the bottom of the image. Delightful!

June 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

"come on bucket, mop, broom...Flora says clean up the room!"
One of my favorite scenes from Sleeping Beauty
I'm sure if I were to cut into that cake, I would need magic to clean it up!!!

@Craig Be careful

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEla

I personally like the Yoda one the best but then I am A Star Wars fan.

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterterrie

Isn't obvious how the Sleeping Beauty cake is staying up? Fauna said it herself, "Of course it will be much stiffer after it's baked." This picture must be taken after baking.

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDave

The one with the animals in party hats reminds me of my favorite book growing up. It was called "Cheltanham's Party." I'm sure this cake isn't based on that book (because NO ONE I know remembers it!) but it was still a great reminder of a story I hadn't thought about in years.

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret Thatcher

I think it's "BORK, BORK, BORK", isn't it? We wouldn't want to short-change him one of his BORKs.... :-)

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSam

"YODA ONE FOR ME, CAKEWRECKS!!" ;)
Love the Star Wars cake, I do...!

:) Mags / MagsGraphics

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMags

That Yoda cake! Have it, I must!

June 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRed

@Ela, It's all good. Thanks.

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

@Cyberjar88 that was my first thought too. Call it the comic nerd in me, but Spiderman doesn't belong with the DC heroes!

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAshlee

They are all awesome. But I, like you, gasped in delight over the Sleeping Beauty cake. That one is amazing! I even teared up a bit over it's beauty. Plus it helps that's my favorite movie. :)

June 5, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim T.

#6: Is this actually a "cupcake cake" that Jen likes?!?! lol. These cakes are amazing. I wish I could have the Sleeping Beauty birthday cake.

June 6, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterG-Baby

@ Margaret Thatcher I could be wrong but I *think* the animals in the party hats are from Rude Dog and the Dweebs a cartoon we had in the UK when I was a kid

June 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

It's bittersweet for me see the Sunday Sweets page. While I love seeing the amazing talent these cake decorators poses, it often makes me wonder why I even bother making cakes myself. I'll never be at that skill level.

June 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStacey M.

The sleeping beauty cake is one of the coolest cakes I've ever seen. Absolutely love it! I wonder if the My Little Pony cake got its inspiration from the Rainbow Unicorn cake i made for my daughter's 5th birthday? (http://www.tikkido.com/node/710) . It's been pretty popular on Cake Central. Even if she came up with the ideas independently, I think I'm going to decide to be flattered and think of myself as influential. ;-)
