What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Avengers, Assemble!

Greetings, Wreckies. I know you've been waiting for some Avengers Sweets, and here they are! Brought to you by me, Lindsey, the least qualified person on earth to write about the Avengers. It's a movie? With superheroes? Something about a hammer? Don't hurt me.

Right then, I'll just fake it. Here we go.

One of the original Avengers, as everybody knows, was Wolf-Spider-Man.

By Andrea's SweetCakes

No? Not a real thing, you say? Well, it should be, because I would be way more afraid of him. Wolf spiders are TERRIFYING. (The cake is 100% cute, though!)

(PS: Spider-Man and Wolverine actually were original Avengers. See? I do know a little something.)

(Ok, fine; only because Jen told me.)

And here we have Thorn and his mighty meat tenderizer!

By Don Buciak II

I kid, I kid.  I've actually seen Thor, and I even liked it. (Chris Hemsworth, what?)

And what I love about this cake is not just the fantastic frosting graphic, but also that it doesn't have the typical birthday-cake script. That's a Thor-approved font, I'd say.

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me? (If you and I happened to be superheroes?)

Submitted by SuperChunks and made by Royal Bakery

Captain America! He has ever so neatly popped out of this cake to save the day.

(He is the leader of the Avengers right?  He's, like, in the middle of all the posters at least.)

(I really need to see this movie.)

Look, I can name most of them. Here we have Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, don't know, don't know, and whats-her-bucket:

By Sarah Trefny of Klickitat Street

But enough about me: let's talk about how amazing these cookies are! Smoosh your face up close to your monitor and drink in all that detail. What a shame to eat them!  My favorite are Hulk's little toes. Nom.

And how could you not love Hulk's fist punching through this cake?

By rebbateman

I like the bricks flying out from the sides. Simply smashing.

For this next cake I consulted an expert on all things Avengers: my ten-year-old son, Blake.  However, he was appalled that Thor was using a binky, and exclaimed "Thor is like, the second-manliest one of them all! They should have given the binky to Iron Man!"

[Note from Jen: I just sprained something laughing. Please thank Blake for me. And ask him who the first-manliest is.]

By HummingBread

I tried to explain that this was a cake for a one-year-old, but by then Blake had stomped away in disgust.

Good thing, because I don't know how kindly he'd take to these Hello Kitty Avengers.

Submitted by Sarae B. and made by Animated Cupcakes

But, seriously, aren't they the most adorable things you've seen all day?!

Stop.

Mjölnir time!

And I also spy Captain America's shield, and ... a defibrillator?  The All Spark?

I have no idea what I am talking about.

[Note from Jen: It's Tony Stark's arc reactor. Never change, Lindsey.]

And finally: Avengers, assemble!

By Cakes with L.O.V.E.

Blake has informed me that Thor's hammer should not be on top, because it would smash through all the other layers. Hmmm. That would be a shame. Better pass that piece to me.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

OMG baby captain america!! :D :D I love all of these, never saw justice look so cute :D

You had me at "What's Her Bucket" ... and who IS the first-manliest?

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

I have to know -- who is the *first* manliness?

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRenee

My favorite is definitely Thor and his binky. Nice post, Lindsey!!!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWroena

I didn't know it was the arc reactor either, and I've seen all of the movies. I probably would have figured it out eventually, but it definitely wasn't the first thing I thought of!

Oh, and total parenting win that Blake knows the full power of Thor's hammer. Junior wreckporter minion in the making! :)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMichelleH

Anyone else think that Blake should write a post? ;) lol. I must say, this is a great post! Blake's comments are the icing. And I feel as thought I know just about as much at Lindsey about these things (but I did get the Arc reactor!)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJenni

Thank you, Lindsey, for letting me know that I am not the only person in America who has not seen this movie. So for me... this post made complete sense.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

These are awesome! Wolf-Spider-Man!!! I love it! I do love that cake though. It looks just like the pieces were pulled from a comic book... er, graphic novel, that is. And I love the Hello Kitty cupcakes too! So sweet and geeky at the same time- they're so cute! I wouldn't be able to eat them.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternormajean

You had to see Avengers to get the arc reactor... I mean Iron Man was long enough ago that it just might not click... awesome post... I was laughing my tuckus off - I just love your sense of humor...have to make sure I'm not eating or drinking when I read your posts or I'd probably choke to death.

Blake, yay! He's a purist... I vote for Capt. America as being the 1st manliest. :)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeanne

Wolf spiders are completely freaky!! That was AWESOME, Lindsay. :D

We're gonna have an Epcot asking about who is first manliest in Blake's mind. After all, who can fathom a 10 year old boy?

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

This was my favorite wrecks in awhile, lol.

As a Marvel fan (admittedly not the nerdiest of them), though, I feel the need to point out that wolverine and spiderman were not original avengers and in fact tend to be occasional guests only due to their... ahem... "independent" nature.

(My boyfriend once remarked, "They only put wolverine in the avengers to make avengers-drama, since he makes everyone fight with him & each other.")

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate ISham

(In my best geek scholar voice) Actually, the original Avengers were Iron Man, the Wasp, Giant-Man and Thor. Captain America joined shortly. Wolverine and Spider-Man both were part of the Avengers, but they joined years after the original team was formed.

Just thought I'd set the record straight, 'cause that's the most important thing to get from this post, right? I mean who cares about how awesome these cakes are? Okay, I'll go back into my comic cave again.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I'll venture into the EPCOT bunker: Most manliest = Hulk, of course. He's always angry, so it must be an overload of testosterone. Avengers is worth seeing if just for the Hulk/Loki interaction. Loved the Avengers. Love this post.

I vote for Blake doing a post, too. That's some major psychological insight into Ironman. The boy will go for.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEliza

Hulk is just mad because he didn't get the binky.

And oh goodness, those cookies! I love how most of them use the same cookie shape, except Thor gets extra space for his helmet-wings and Hulk is, you know, hulking.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

He must think the Hulk is manliest, but that's less obvious with an unshifted Bruce Banner. Come to think of it, the pacifier might, y'know, pacify him. The only reason to give it to Iron Man is to make us wonder how he sucks thru the mask.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClassic Steve

Gotta love the mind of a kid! Just the other day, my 9-year-old daughter Maddy solemnly informed me that Easter Island should be used for Whack-A-Mole. But, hands down, my favorite was when she asked me, at 4, if spiders had knees. (Actually, they do. Seven on each leg. I had to research to answer her.)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

love love LOVE the hello kitty cupcakes the hulk one is so CUTE!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPandaLove

Hysterical post!!!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarsi

My friend Candice (@loveyourcake) just made a sweet super hero cake. Check out her blog http://www.bakedinvancouver.com/

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindsay

And to think I thought Wolverine was dreamed up just to cover Hugh Jackman's face with fuzz. (Best movie I ever saw with the sound turned off. Made no sense, but ...Hugh Jackman. )

@SaraCVT--Are you telling me that if a spider owes money to loansharks, the kneecapping is going take all day?

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

these were all very very good, but hello kitty interpretations of the avengers?!? awesome!!!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

The Hulk is obviously the manliest.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRauss

So cute. I just made an iron man cake for my nephew,
But it's not nearly as good as there's cakes

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAna

As someone who knows nothing* about Avengers, I found this very educational. In fact, I'm now thinking of dressing up as What's-Her-Bucket for Halloween this year. It never would have crossed my mind before. Thank you, Lindsey!

*I do know this:
Robert Downey Jr. was Iron Man some time ago and he's yummy.
Hugh Jackman was Wolverine and he, too, is yummy.
Blake should have his own blog.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

I love this site. Good laughs during the week, and awesome cakes on Sunday. And today: both!

I haven't seen the movie either, but as a long-time (40 years -- OMG) reader of the Avenger comics, I did recognize Tony's arc reactor on #8. Couple of geeky details: it produces power, so there should be an outlet on it, not a plug. More important, its main function is to keep Tony's heart beating (long story) and it's unique. If it's removed for more than a few seconds, he dies. But, hey, we get cake!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMajor Ypres

Ok....gotta say: I'm frequently behind the cultural curve and don't get all of the references. So on this one I didn't feel so left out :) Thanks Lindsey.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

Regarding the Thor/Binky controversy, when the ten year old is a bit older, ask him which of those characters is having regular sexual intercourse.

[Editor's note- Wait, what? -john]

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPhil

I about choked on my diet coke when I read about the defibrillator. Seriously good stuff.

I'm clueless about superheros and the like, so this post made complete sense to me :)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAllison M

Best Sunday Sweets EVER! :D:D

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCorinna

Aww! I want all of the baby Avengers are figurines for my desk! Like naow! I also totally agree with Blake about the the last cake. First thing I thought was "ouch! poor Hulk got smashed on the head!"

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJabby

Not wanting to pick faults but on the one with the hulk's fist he appears to have fingernails on his knuckles, look at the cake then make a fist...

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTanya

FYI, Nick Fury wears the eye-patch. Natasha Romanov is the redhead. That is all I can help you with--just saw it a few days ago.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercliffsidepark6@aol.com

The hulk is the angriest...not manliest... imho Don't know if wolverine is part of the avengers...HE would be all-time manliest... again imho lol

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJeanne

No Loki?!?! :(

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobyn

Blake is right. Thor with a binky indeed. Sheesh...

The binky belongs to Loki, especially after Hulk smashed him. LOL

These cakes were great and I too have yet to see the movie. Sigh. Always late to the party.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

I agree, Hulk has to be the most manliest. But please do get Blake to confirm! As for the Hello Kitty Avengers, I'm trying to decide whether the Hulk or Black Widow with a hair bow gets the "That's Just Wrong!" award.

But really, I'm posting to say that fans of Cake Wrecks really are the coolest geek fans ever, because we all enjoy these discussions of global significance. And we get all the references. Except Lindsay, who gets to be in the geek club because of this awesome post, and because she watched Thor for Chris Hemsworth. (swoon)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Oh my goodness!!! I am a long-time reader of Cake Wrecks and always love Sunday Sweets but I am borderline obsessed with this post!! Can't decide if I love baby Thor or the cookies most! As a big Avengers fan and baker, I made some Avengers cake pops for my baking blog. Just thought it would be fun to share - I'd love it if you guys checked them out! :) http://www.littlelionbakedgoods.com/the-avengers-cake-pops/

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMaddy

Love the post - total humor! I'm a not-so-geeky mum who knows who they all are, and have never seen the movie. (I do however, have three sons and two grandsons). I get to learn these things, including what arc reactors are, even in minature.

I vote Wolverine as first-manliest(Hugh.... *sigh*) and I agree that Thor is second... really close second!

Sweet cakes, love the mini versions, baby versions, and the ONLY Hello Kitty ANYthing I would have anything to do with! I do not understand Hello Kitty, except when Marshall Dillon said it in Gunsmoke.

There, now you know how old I am.

Love Blake's interpretations, esp the binky bedecked Iron Man. He does whine a lot.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDi

Mmmmm... the Hemsworth brothers. Yeah...

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLindarella

Thanks, cliffsidepark6, for identifying "I don't know" and "What's-her-bucket". Anybody know who the other "I don't know" is?

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKhymera

Baby Thor with a binky is cute. That Hulk on the other hand looks like Oscar the Grouch with a shave and steroids. It's a new look for him.
I am loving those Hello Kitty Avengers! Especially Helly Kitty Hulk! Adorable! I so want these sweets.:-)

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

Oh, that Captain America cake is adorable!

And Thor with his binky, an a very grumpy-looking Hulk (but then, I guess that's kind of the point of the character...).

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfish eye no miko

I geeked out while reading this.My favorite Cake Wreck Post EVER!!And on the cookies,(the 4th picture),they are(in order),Hawkeye,Nick Fury(Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.),and Black Widow. The first manliest Avenger would be either Hulk or Captain America. And on the last one,I agree with Blake.Blake is a smart ten year old!
So thank you for making me squeal with joy!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily E

P.S. You SHOULD go see the Avengers!Epic movie! And stay after the credits!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily E

Hawkeye. The one no one's mentioned getting. Hawkeye. Definitely the manliest. Why? Because he HAS NO SUPERPOWERS. And yet he's still out there kicking butt with the rest. Also, Jeremy Renner's biceps. SWOON. The rest of him's pretty good too!

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy

Phil seems to be threatened by the manliness ratings...

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

Um...Cap is clearly the manliest. Hulk is just angry.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCookieD'oh

You posted my submission, YAY!!!!!! Thank you! <3

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraƩ

As others have mentioned, Wolverine and Spider-Man were far from original Avengers. Both of them finally joined the Avengers in 2005, when Marvel felt like all of its most popular characters had to be on the team. The Avengers started in 1963 and those two joined only 42 years later, so that's LIKE being original members, I guess.

That said, those are some awesome cakes, and the commentary is hilarious.

June 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commentershurwitt

Hot dawg, those are awesome!
