What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Draw Something

You guys, I reeeeally want to play Draw Something, but I'm afraid I'll be terrible at it. AND THEN WHAT? I ask you.

So, while I haven't played it yet myself, I did watch my friend Missy do a couple of rounds on her phone. I even helped her guess the answer on one, and then felt all proud and smart and stuff. Which got me to thinking: what if there was a version of Draw Something where you just guessed the answers, and didn't have to actually draw *ANY* thing?

PREEEE-SENTING: WRECK SOMETHING!!

The rules are simple. Just guess what the drawing is. I'll even provide you with the letters for the answer - and no sneaky extra letters, either. The only caveat is that I didn't actually *know* the answer on a couple of them, so in those cases I just made something up. But don't worry; I'm sure you'll still get it.

Ok, let's start with a really easy one, for practice:

DBA PIPHIE EPOUTE

As you can see, using the visual clue it's child's play to unscramble the letters and get "BAD HIPPIE TOUPEE."

YOUR TURN!

DEDRAW LULENC

Bonus hint: At least there's no glitter.

MITE OT ESE HET LOGORUSTI

Bonus hint: Don't cross the streams.

Bonus hint hint: Uh-oh! You're in trouble!

ORF MOWH ETH ELBL LOLTS

Bonus hint: Clarence would be proud.

SFIH KITSCS

Bonus hint: These help the people of Tartarus really hit the sauce.

Bonus hint hint: What? They look like SFIH on KITSCS, ok? I CAN'T HELP WHAT I SEE.

DIPSREBEW

Bonus hint: If John gets this on his face he screams like a little girl.

(NOTE FROM JOHN: NOT TRUE. It's more like a manly banshee.)

(NOTE FROM JEN: I find this substitution...acceptable.)

Thanks to Margaret, Becky S., Danielle M., Natalie R., Katie H., & Nikki F. for helping us draw all the wrong conclusions.

1. Edward Cullen should look so good.
2. If your LOGORUSTI can't see you right away you might try epDsdne egrdnsueramnt!
3. I think the bell tolls for me, as this cake touched me deeply. I think my time may be up.
4. Looks more like obnlde uasanprga.
5. Interesting fact: This cake was actually used at one of the 798 premiers of the Broadway musical, "Spiderman-Turn Off The Dark," and was ulitimately used on the Playbill cover.

It's not a spiderweb: It's a flying pizza!

And I am completely unable to anagram the hint for the blue nintendo controller...

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPentha

Disturbing as this is, I was actually able to decipher the labels beneath each cake. I don't know if this is a sign that great minds think alike, that I spend WAY too much time here, or that I really need to get some sleep (1-month-old = sleep deprivation).

Also, Jen, I played a version of Draw Something on Facebook. It's not as hard as it looks, plus, with all of your crafty/art experience, you'd do fine.

Finally, I love that you can see the reflection of the wreckporter in the 2nd cake's box, and because of where the reflection is positioned, it looks like he has fangs, too. :)

I love Draw Something. Gives me a reason to yell at my friends poor spelling without them knowing LOL

However, here are my ideas on the identity of the cakes:

1. an upside down Easter Basket (it's empty cuz while it was upside down, all the candy fell out)
B. an X box game controller (with teeth, so when you make a stupid move in a game, it bites you)
39. a leaking spleen
T. Wings of a angel (Ok, I cheated, it's written on the front of the cake)
98.6 Mr. Hankey's family
100.5 ah choo Sorry, allergies

A Wadder Cullen? I'm going back to bed until more motivated wreckies than myself start translating these in the comments...

Jen, this is just like Karaoke, you don't have to be any good to join. Actually, if you're not good at all, like me, it's even more fun! You should definitely join.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFrank

Th third one is an IUD, right?

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth C.

Got them all except "LOGORUSTI."

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

Ok. Got it now.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

You do realise that you're probably going to get thousands of requests to play Draw Something now, right? LOL I have no doubt you'd be great at it.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDenise

Yes, I'm being deliberately BSOEURC

1. Bad Hippie Wig (thanks)
2. Giant Space Walrus with Photon Flippers -- does that ring a Bella?
3. Your bladder's response to your recent gallbladder troubles
4. Ask not -- but I'm just winging it for thee
5. Mammalian aquatic gymnasts -- they stuck the landing -- and, why the chest embellishments?
6. The malevolent entity that killed Tasha Yar, when first it practiced to deceive

The CW page opens and my 5 year old does a double take and says, "What the...?"

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteramanda

You definitely need to start playing! I need more people to play with - my friends don't play often enough and I end up starting games with random people. And don't worry about drawing well. Most people are drawing with their finger on a phone screen - no one expects the Mona Lisa (And they let you choose different line widths) Stick figures are totally par for the course.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer P.

Ugh... what's the last one???

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSteph at The Circus

The second one isn't DEDRAW LULENC. It's a Cylon ship that lost a bet and had to get a My Little Pony paint job.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBB, Miami

1. Hippie Toupee (obviously)(WILLIAM!!!!!!!!!!!) (no one will have any idea what I'm talking about)
2. Squashed-against-windshield Vampire Bat (you're right, it should sparkle! I hear that the candy-corn fang protectors do wonders for your dental! )
3. Mustard-filled balloon? (what sort of insufferable person drops a hot dog? And why on EARTH would it be dropped into a balloon?)
4. WEEPING ANGEL!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (though this seems to be the rare Weeping Angel species of "Angelis Wiipingis Invisibilis", in which only the wings and blood-tinged halo is visible)
5. Snarf Trees. Enough said.
6. THE MONSTER HAND OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (unattached to anything else, obviously)

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHannah A

I'm too tired to struggle with anagrams today but cake No.4 just begs the question - where is the rest of the ex-rabbit (it has ceased to be)? Why did it leave just its ears when it shuffled off this mortal coil? Or is it wearing a cloak of invisibility but forgot to tuck its ears in? I'm going to lie down.....

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarolineB

O_o is my expression for these cakes

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

LOGORUSTI is so much funnier once it clicks. I was thinking an CSXERIOT would be more appropriate, but now I see that LOGORUSTI works even better. Just try not to laugh on the way there or it may hurt more.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnna B

@SuBee: VBARA!

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

I cannot figure out LOGORUSTI and it's driving me crazy!

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterreader

I got all but SFIH, I had to write out LOGORUSTI, then I was all like OHHHH but I still don't know what the cake is. O.o

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMisty

1. A Palapa
2. One of those neck pillows for long trips
3. A cow head silhouette that has a runny nose and is wearing a yellow bluetooth
4. A giant churro ring floating next to two glaciers
5. Those cactus things from Super Mario...hold on let me look it up....Pokeys
6. Patrick from Spongebob SquarePants. He is wearing sunglasses and a pink Charlie Brown shirt.

I figured out all your anagrams except the blue neck pillow one. After I found out who it is, I was proud I couldn't guess it. ; - D

Apparently, there was some computer problem when I loaded this post, because mine came with the correct answers under each cake. In fact, these cakes represent items from a small, rather private festival held in the inner regions of the upper section of a near-by state. The first one, DBA PIPHIE EPOUTE, is a ceremonial skirt, with faux legs, worn by the residents when celebrating. The day, filled with mirth and laughter, culminates when the revelers, fueled by a day of eating and drinking, run amok and try to grab one another’s faux leg and shout “I’m just pulling your leg!”
The queen of this festival wears the second item, the DEDRAW LULENE, or ceremonial headdress. The pink octopus like arms signify the unity the village feels during this fun-filled day (all-encompassing arms), while the candy corn is a subtle nod to the fact that “outsiders” consider this whole thing a bit “corny.”
The featured food item at the event is the MITE OT ESE HET (picture here enlarged several times), a small (hence “mite) cookie made of flour, sugar, butter, and the pressed fibers of the hemp plant, thus guaranteeing a high time for all.
ORF MOWH ETH ELBL LOLTS is the official game of the day. Similar to horseshoes, participants throw a red licorice ring at a pair of LOLTS, placed about 30 feet away. In order to score any points, the licorice ring must land atop both LOLTS, as pictured here. A game of unerring and demanding skill, this sport becomes harder to master as the day goes on (see MITE OT ESE HET above for a possible reason….)
Entertainment, such as it is, is provided by the SFIH KITSCS quartet, a world-renown local group of some small fame, known primarily for being the only quartet that dresses up as poo-stalks with papier-mâché sunflower heads. Somewhat limited by a total lack of talent, combined with a paucity of musical ability, the quartet’s total tonal repertoire consists of mumbled versions of “Happy Birthday.” However, since they are featured very late in the day, they are still a crowd-pleaser (see MITE OT ESE HET for a possible reason….)
Finally, no celebration would be complete without an official drink, and DIP SREBEW fills the bill. Actually, as the picture suggests, it fills the horn, as the DIS SREBEW is drunk from a horn made to resemble a rhinoceros horn and is decorated with squiggly lines. As legend has it, the rhinoceros horn is a powerful aphrodisiac, and the squiggly lines represent…well…the same things as those little balloons do on other cakes…. The horn is carried around by a character named Lucky, and anyone who wants a drink has to catch the character, symbolizing their wish for later that night: hoping to get Lucky.
Thank you for bringing all these cakes together! It is not often we get a glimpse into this strange, yet beautiful festival.
Note: though generally this is a safe event, last year one participant tripped over a Kleenex box – he didn’t break any bones, just got a soft-tissue injury.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermel

They are mostly pitiful, but I swear that last one is actually the Doomsday Machine from Star Trek (TOS).

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

My favorite part of today's post is the self-portrait of the second cake's photographer.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJustMe

It's funny that on the Edward Cullen cake, you can see the reflection of the photographer! lol.....

I'm thinking the SFIH KITSCS look like they were going for not-so-Angry Birds or seagulls on those wood pier posts. They look really happy and cute, but they don't make any sense (like any of these cakes ever do). And that shade of green is most unfortunate.

This cake is going to bother me.

@Donna M: LOVED the numbering! LOL!

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh524

Are you sure the last one isn't a Dorito? Haha :)

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMelanie

Spiderweb... Huh.

At first I thought that was a shuttlecock. I don't suppose John would like to see that coming towards his face either...

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVivian

1 - Hippie 'stache.
2 - Walrus with dental hygiene problems
3 - Your brain, on drugs
4 - Smokers' lung
5 - Happy Kazoos. I don't know, that's just what they look like to me.
6 - .... I got nothing....

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKdot

I couldn't figure out the blue walrus-boomerang-bat and wondered if there were such a thing as a Warded Clunel. Then I read the comments. After I googled "Edward Cullen," I thought it was pretty dang funny.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

The first thing that came to mind on that first cake was "Yak with Flowers."

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commenternepetacataria

I mean no disrespect, but I think that's a damn good hippie toupee!

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnononon

Having battled dyslexia all my life, you would have thought that I would have been able to turn these words aroud so that I would be able to read them right being that they are already scrambled. lol I guess my teachers did to good a job with me over the years.

Anyway, I am thinking that secound one is more of a butterfly mishap more than anything. The third one looks more like foot prints with a Halo. I agree that the last one looks like fish on something but I have no idea what. lol

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerrie

SPIDERWEB!!!! Sorry, John, but the possibilities of what you might get on your face to make you scream like a little girl... It took me a while to come up with spiderwebs but suffice it to say that there was a lot of giggling on the way there.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercrematia

The hippie wig looks more like a tiki hut to me. Although that makes no more sense than a wig cake.

Anyone want to take the Words of the Day portions of my exams? Because my students sure don't.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

I thought that the third one was a tampon. What does that mean, doc?

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTim

@ mel: awesome!

@Haiku Joy: If your exams had word scrambles and crazy cakes like today's post, maybe the students would be more excited...? By the way, I think today's haiku is my favorite so far; until tomorrow! : - )

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

@mel -- I think there's a documentary about that on laNantoi gGopcahire tonight. Your description brought tears to my eyes.

@Haiku Joy -- I do. I really, really do. And I'll answer simply and consisely, as I like to eschew obfuscation.

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Literally, the correct answers:
1.Edward Cullen

2. time to see the urologist

3. for whom the bell tolls

4. fish sticks

5. spiderweb

Or are they?

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEpcotLover

I totally read the inscription on No 4 as "Wings of a Bagel"

May 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFran

ok, I'm a bit behind, being in NZ and all, but the two things I saw are:
Cake A: Winnie the Pooh, in the aforesaid hippie wig
Cake 2: asthma lungs - ok, it's Asthma Day in NZ today
Cake iii: Face looking left, with tiny little white eye
Cake *: Dunno what the cake is, but I read "Viagra of a tango" - brain freeze!!
Cake next: Easter chicks wouldn't smile like that when sitting on poo cacti
Cake z: I do like how the rocket appears to be moving, by leaving a trail of black dots across the sunset sky

Cheers
