I particularly enjoy the "traditional" sticker on the second picture. If that's "traditional," I would hate to see "un-traditional" (unless it's on Cake Wrecks, of course). :)
I wonder if there are any charitable groups dedicated to passing out free dictionaries to cake decorators? My spelling isn't terrific... but yeeeeesh! I weep for the future.

In the fourth picture (third cake), it appears the "In Memory..." was written before the cake was decorated. The "rs" in soldiers is visible outside the white edging and I believe there is also an "F" in falling which is still incorrect.
The misspelled cakes are always one of my favorites as well. I can understand someone getting distracted and missing a letter or something, but I can't stop laughing at cakes with horrible wrecked "words". Alyauys? LOL

mindy1, please stop telling Jen and her team how to do their job. seriously. yesterday the first comment on a wonderful pirate themed sunday sweets post is you whining about how you hope they don't forget memorial day (as if they ever have forgotten any special patriotic occasion), and now you are complaining about it not being a sunday sweets theme.
there have been quite some patriotic sunday sweets in the past, and there are only so many pretty cakes you can make if you are limited to three colors.
besides, the wrecks are far more hilarious.
which probably appeals more to me since i'm not from the USA, or anywhere from the american continent for that matter. we don't even have much of a military where i live. still, i hope all your loved ones return savely!

And, sadly, so many people have done worse things with that image (jogging shorts, really?? yeah, I guess this country was built on sweat and pain but geez!). I guess these are the freedoms our military has earned for us but I prefer to exercise the right of NOT being a doofus (hey, I do that sometimes- not be a doofus, I mean) or pathetically unclear about the purpose of this day or what my country's most sacred emblem looks like.

And, yes, we have the right to ignore the opportunity of schooling or reference books so we can't spell properly (personally, I love spell check but it's not always right, y'know) and, certainly, everyone deserves gainful employment so I ought to be happy these people are not a drain on society and it does provide fodder for my "happy place" as we call CW in my house. However, I think that some occasions require a little more quality control than others and honoring our fallen seems to rank up there. (sigh) DO YOU HEAR ME, BAKERS?? @ millbrit -- I believe that the “Traditional” sticker on the cake refers to what was at one time the traditional spelling of the word “always,” which was “alyauys.” This was, of course, because the letter “w” had not been granted full letter status yet. The alphabet, like the Periodic Table of Elements, is a work in progress, and as linguistic archaeologists find more and more letters, they are added to the alphabet. The “w,” though found before the “y” was seen by most to be a mistake – two “v’s” stuck together – and was just thrown in the box of letter fragments. (Those letter fragments would later go on to become word fragments, leading to the oh-so incorrect sentence fragments). Years later, a bored cryptologist was looking through the box and found the “w”. He took it home to study, and, one night while contemplating it dawned on him that while the “w” actually was two “v’s” stuck together, it nevertheless had an important role in the alphabet. He realized that using the “w” he could form words previously unknown and consolidate speech – instead of saying “I need to buy a shirt that is composed of all the colors of that colorful image in the sky after it rains,” he could now just say “I want a white shirt.” Instead of saying at Halloween (previously called “dress up in scary clothes and get candy day”), “I am disguised as a lady in a long skirt, cape, pointed hat that rides around on a broom,” he could just say “witch.” He was so elated he created the first “w” word – Wow – craftily using the letter twice. Once the “w” was granted full letter status, “alyuays” became “always,” and countless other words were revised and new ones created.

#1 Oh, the rich irony of forgetting the 'r' and the color sequence. Three cheers for the blue, white and red!
#2 At first, I thought these were defaced cinnamon rolls. But the shadows reveal height, thus cupcakes bravely struggling under the weight of all that frosting. The only sense in which any of this is 'traditional' is CCCs and misspellings are long-standing 'traditions' with wreckorators.
#3 I could be wrong (hey, it could happen), but I think 'Freedome' is the next installment of the Mad Max series. Max has to find out who is hoarding all the frosting, then a huge (and incredibly messy) battle ensues, ending with the world being overrun by ants. (Contains scenes that may not be suitable for diabetics.)
#4 Manager (who, unlike* 99.9% of managers, has a bit of a CDO problem): "I can almost tell what this says. We'll soon fix that. First, we'll add a border with the largest tip we can find. Then, some extraneous flotsam. Finish up by tossing star sprinkles at a fan -- perfect. We didn't graduate from the Sandra Lee School of Decorashun for nothing, you know."
*Typo -- that should be 'like'.
#5 I was trying to make a case for this celebrating 'Momorial Day' -- the all-in-one holiday on the new decimal calendar we'll all
notbe usingeversoon. But I see that both round vowels lack the little loop at the top that literate people put on a cursive 'o'. Also, the possessive apostrophe-s would go unexplained. So all that remains is to figure out who 'Memerial' might be, and what her (?) association might be with a flag made of inch-thick frosting strips. Please let that at least be something resembling buttercream and not (gag) shortening-based.Freedom is a marvelous thing. Anyone who laments the fact that this free blog isn't run exactly the way they think it ought to be has perfect freedom to go and start their own blog, where they can make everything conform to their wishes. (Of course, such a blog will probably be of interest only to them.) Once they see how much work is involved in doing it consistently -- and well -- perhaps they will gain a measure of respect for those who run this blog. When they have their own trolls, perhaps they will understand how it feels to have their competence -- and their patriotism -- questioned.

Okay, I just logged on.
But it still makes me extremely happy. For one, it reminds me of when I learned about the obsolete letter thorn, which makes a "th" sound and looks much like a letter y. Which is why all of those touristy-old-timey places have signs like "Ye Olde Bookestore." It's not "yee," but "the!" The lightbulb over my head hovered for a week.
For two, it reminds me of the table of elements in general, which is one of the most amazing organizational systems and which was partially inspired by a dream. I would love to have heard some of Mendeleev's scoffers: "Dream on, Dimitri!" they'd say, not knowing that the dreams are the source of his power. Mwahahahaha!
These comments are making me sad on a couple of levels here. First of all, JM, shame on you! Secondly, mindy1, "whatever" is right, it does come across petty. Thirdly, "whatever" even bummed me out with his/her "I'm not American so it doesn't matter to me" attitude. I am not American either (and I am, in fact, a pacifist) but I still appreciate that every one of those men and women who give themselves to military service do so at a great cost (just ask their families) and they don't do it just for American freedom. Sorry to be adding a serious, not fun comment, I just had to say it. I hope the annoying/mean spirited/ignorant/etc. don't discourage you Jen! The rest of us love you to bits and we want you around to entertain us, alyuays!

@Haiku Joy -- I recently ran across the word "pandiculation" and thought of you. It does NOT mean "the artificial insemination of pandas," as I had hoped it might, but rather the whole body stretch one does sometimes when yawning. And it was not the yawning -- which could be construed as boredom -- which reminded me of you, as you are not in any way boring. It was the fact it was a word I had never seen or heard before. Your comment also gave me the excuse to look up "thorn" in Wikipedia, which allowed me to read the word "fricative" twice in one sentence. (That NEVER happens...)
A few of us come to CW for a laugh; so I think Craig said it all...cyberbullies can go play somewhere else. Thank you Jen and John (thoJ) for letting us play on your site.

Thanks to Jen, John and all the CW staff for working on Sunday, Memorial Day, etc. Don't let the small people ruin your "ministry" to us warped people. My father, a vet, and not a computer user has chuckled when I relay what I've seen on this site. My husband, a quadriplegic, appreciates the message he gets from my laughing in bed at what you post. Keep on 'wreckin'!!!!
As the daughter, granddaughter, and great niece of veterans, I applaud these cakes. It is always good to remember that there should be laughter as well as tears on any day of memory, whether it be Memorial Day or Remembrence Day. And for those of you who wish to complain about the humor, go read "Flander's Fields." That should be sad enough for you. After all my great uncle was buried there in WWI.

the military in the USA sacrifice themselves for us to be able to disagree publicly but, also, for us to be able to make up and live together. seems funny that we (as a species) think that violence should begat peace but, sadly, it seems to be our way.
being guilty of having demanded things of J&J(thoJ) I can tell you that it's an easy trap to fall into- they are often so obliging. being guilty of not realizing how my words can be taken by others is also a common error on my part and makes me willing to assume that's what has happened in at least some of the comments here.
so, in honor of those who volunteered or were drafted for the freedoms we now enjoy I'm going to be bossy: be nice!! and hugs all around. I'll start.

I, too, looked up "thorn" and was overjoyed (no pun intended...for once) to see the phrase "voiceless dental fricative"....it is probably one of the strongest epithets ever written...why, why...you're nothing but a voiceless dental fricative! I can't wait to use it.... Wait...maybe it's a charity: Help the Voiceless Dental Fricatives. Also, on a side note, one day, long ago, when they were little kids, two of my sisters were fighting and one said to the other, "You devil, you." Misunderstanding, but still offended, the insulted sister ran crying to our mother and said, "She called me a 'w'." To this day, some 50 plus years later, that remains our favorite invective.

All I can say is wow to the complainers. Of all the things to take offense to this is beyond ridiculous. Sorry just had to add my two cents to that. I was going to post my own rant aimed at the people who whined because they felt this Memorial Day tribute wasn't adequate. Then I figured I'd just be adding fuel to the troll fire. Instead, I'll just say thank you for the years of laughter you guys have given me, and to the men and women of our military who have given their all so that I have the freedom to laugh here in the first place.
zoomom, i think you got me wrong, or maybe i didn't write my post clear enough. i never did say (or meant to say) that i don't care about american soldiers or the americans remembering the fallen ones and hoping for the living ones to come back savely, what i DID mean to say was a) where i live military doesn't have a lot of status and is barely existent and we don't have a special day for remembering the past ones, so i can't really relate to the festivities as i'm just not used to them, but do still respect them and b) since i'm not american i don't really get much out of american patriotic sunday sweets cakes but the american patriotic wrecks are still hilarious to me simply because they are wrecks and badly misspelled.
i hereby apologize to anyone who i might have offended because of my unfortunate wording.

PS A suggestion to those who wish they could thank our soldiers personally: you can! Everytime I see one in uniform (or can identify them as a veteran, etc.), I thank them for their service. My kids do it, too. They were shy @ first, but now they get excited when they see someone in uniform. One group of young men joked with my son & told him to "go Air Force" instead of their branch. (perhaps they'd just finished basic training... :-) Thank you all, servicemen & women everywhere.
I am sorry if I offended anyone, that was not my point.
A belated thank you to all veterans and their families who have given so much so we can enjoy the freedom both to create beautiful things and wreck away, both to enjoy the beauty in life and crack up at the hilarity, both of which this blog enables me to do on a regular basis.
All of those in the armed services deserve our appreciation, whether it's spelled correctly or not, and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, no words or images can suffice to show our gratitude.
Given the number of those in the past who have said 'stuff' and simply left, I think the apologies show a desire to mend breaches and a fair amount of class. Way to go.
The next time I have a pair of breaches that need mending, I know where to bring them.

I am new to your site and have been laughing my head off! HOW FUNNY! I love this site and will be a subscriber now for sure! As a baker myself, I have come to the rescue of many tragic wrecks. It turns out that the original Star Trek episodes are a little intense for me, so we can't watch them at night. But you just try getting your hubby up at 6 am to watch Star Trek so you can be out the door by 7 in the morning . . .
So, yeah, I've seen the first six episodes of original Star Trek.
