What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Vintage Elegance

"Elegance isn’t about being noticed, it’s about being remembered."

Isn't that a deep thought? I didn't think of it myself. I found it on Pinterest, which basically does my thinking for me these days.  But I do think you'll find today's vintage style Sweets to be nothing but noticeable AND memorable.

For instance, I don't think I will ever forget this cake, as I've been staring at it for a solid 20 minutes.

Its beauty has been burned into my brain!

This next one is completely fondant-free, and so exquisitely detailed it's actually causing me physical pain. Ugh.

Submitted by Denette L. & made by & Eat It, Too!

Have you ever felt that? A little sting from viewing something of absolute beauty? Like this gorgeous cake, or an amazing sunrise, or Zac Efron?

Perhaps I've said too much.

I've never looked at a cake before and wished it was a ride at Disneyland, but here you have it:

By Amber's Cake Creations

Hmm, but maybe an entire theme park dedicated to cake would be even better. Caketopia! I might be onto something here...

Now, prepare your eyeballs for the intense awesomeness they are about to behold:

Each of these cakes is entirely breathtaking on its own, but THREE?  A pearly pink trifecta of  peacock plumaged perfection? Swoon. No. I take that back. They deserve two syllables: Swoo-hoon.

I don't think anything fits the term 'vintage elegance' better than a corset.

By Frosted Love Celebration Cakes

And this incredible cake really imbodies the phrase, huh? Get it?  *elbow nudge*

Ohh, I love the diamond tufting on this cake. And the colors are so retro and perfect. With the glints of gold and pearls, it's like a little jewelry box full of treasures!

However, I wouldn't be disappointed to find it full of cake inside, either.

Someone should tell this cake that it's not polite to upstage the bride.

Look at that lace! Simply gorgeous.

 Modern vintage: an oxymoron?

By Art and Appetite

Ha ha hardly.

(Well, I guess it is an oxymoron, but that word just sounds like an insult!)  This cake deserves nothing but flattery with its cool juxtaposition of stripes and ruffles.

And now: more ruffles!

By Amanda Oakleaf Cakes

This confection looks totally cute and innocent, until you notice that one layer looks like a garter, and the  ruffly tier looks like a petticoat!  Gasp! I clutch my pearls in shock!  Such scandalousness.

And I'm not sure exactly how, but this cake is giving off a bit of a 'boudoir' vibe as well.  Maybe its the sassy stack of ruffles, or the 'stitching' along the stripes, or the fondant jewelry draped just-so.

"Voulez-vous stare at this cake avec moi?"

PS: EDIBLE JEWELRY? Is this really real?  I approve.

Sweet sassafras! This final Sweet is amazing. It's like a '40s prom dress or something. In fact, it's the very definition of vintage elegance. I even made up a word in its honor:

By Sweet Pea Cakes

Flappergasting!

(That uh, sounded more complimentary in my head.)

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

Update from john: Commenting may be a bit... wonky today. We're working on it.  And by "working" I mean waiting for someone to fix it.  Hey, someone!  Could you hurry it up?!

I always check for the Sunday sweets, and they don't disappoint - but these cakes are *stunning*. All of them. I can't even begin to choose a favourite. Fantastic work.

These are all so perfect! LOVE the pink trio. Couple of exceptions to the perfection: hate the cake topper on the modern cake; the vintage flowers do not go with the black and white stripes. Second, Flappers were from the 20's, not 40's; and to be honest the cake looks like a Gibson Girl from the 1890's, but I guess I'm being WAY too picky. It's a gorgeous cake, none-the-less.

I think all these are are beautiful cakes to say the least, but my favorite is the Corset cake.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerrie

Can somebody pleas deliver all of these cakes to my house, asap. Love them all.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaitlyn

Is that third cake topped with a hollow shell of icing flowers? If so, that's particularly impressive.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJoel Polowin

I had "saucer eyes" looking at every one of these, and was just reduced to saying "Oooooooo. Pretty.". I am not a person that likes pink, but I would gladly take any one of those three cakes, particularly the one on the left. One of the best Sunday Sweets. :D

My favorite part is when you write "scandalousness!" instead of the standard nominal "scandal!" Also, thank you for teaching me "imbody" as a correct alternate spelling to "embody."

I also like the cakes. :-)

I don't know how it is possible for Sunday Sweets to be more incredibly amazing every week but it is true. This is the best Sunday Sweets yet! It seems the gap between wreckorators and skilled, fine cake decorators is widening by the day. The wrecks are getting worse and sweets are getting "sweeter". Thank God there are decorators out there who can pick up the slack and then some to make up for all the wrecks out there. Kudos to all the bakers featured this week. These cakes are glorious!

So so much talent. The pink trio are simply perfect, and I quite like the last one and the sixth one too (the pillowy green one).

For any other lovers of all things peacock, there was another Sunday Sweets a while back dedicated to them:

The blue one is my favorite. It reminds me of Wedgewood, one of my grandma's favorite things. It's so beautiful, I wish it wasn't cake so I could have it in my hate.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzyBean

Wow, gorgeous cakes! I LOVE the one with the pillow-y puff layer!! I could sleep on that cake!

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMollie

I got up about 7:30 this morning and excitedly came to cakewrecks, but your post wasn't up yet!!! Hey, you have a job to do! No sleeping late on Sundays for you! I need my Sunday Sweets fix early in the morning.
My favorite is the aqua-colored retro-looking one made my Andrea's Sweet Cakes... maybe because my name is Andrea; therefore, that cake must have been made especially for me!!
Thank you for making my Sundays sweet.

I beseech you, since you are a lover of both theme parks and cakes, to PLEASE make Caketopia real someday. I would go every year.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ

These cakes were all so unbelievably gorgeous! This is my favorite Sunday Sweets!

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterannette

Exquse me! Raising hand nervously....
The buckles on the first one havnt been mounted properly on the ribbon, you can see the central ber, once I spotted that it was all I saw on that cake. :(

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymaz

OMG those are the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen-who could eat them??? :D

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Zac Efron?? On a scale of 0 to 10, I give him a solid "meh". The cakes, on the other hand... WOW!!

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbuffy

I NEED the 'boudoir vibe' cake to be dark chocolate on the inside. PLEASE let it be dark chocolate. Then I'd get out my google translator and be all like, "Voulez-vous nager dans ce gâteau avec moi ce matin?" I less-than-three cake wrecks!!!

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVanessa

What beautiful and elegant cakes! These are definitely not wrecks.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterConnie

Lots of gorgesouness, but wholeheartedly agreee with Diddelymaz about the buckles being mounted wrong. The thought of that mistake on such an otherwise work of art makes me literally queasy. So glad I'm not the only one who saw that.

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

I literally laughed out loud at "Flappergasting!"

Those cakes are so gorgeous and the detail is amazing!

May 20, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin

LOVED this Sunday's Sweets. So impressed with all of them. My mouth dropped open from the first pic and still hasn't closed. Well done.

May 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarie

frostedlove.com is down -- maybe you sent too many people there!

May 21, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarilee J. Layman

So much gorgeousness, but the monogram on the gold-tufted cake, if it's supposed to be what's on the little cake box, is more of a wiggly gold butterfly than the letters. Ah, this imperfect world!

May 21, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

Those cakes are gorgeous works of art. Thanks for sharing something beautiful!

May 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVanessa

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the first cake have real lace and ribbon on it? I know some decorator's can be pretty convincing but I'd put money on that being real. And don't you usually trash bakers for putting non-edible items on their cake like ribbons, figurines, etc?

May 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKelly

I wouldn't normally post on a thread that features one of my cakes but I just wanted to clarify that I have shut down my "Frosted Love" website which is why you find it dead when you try to pull it up. In my own defense I will tell you that I came up with a rolling pin specifically for fondant and it has been in such high demand that I finally got to where I couldn't do both cake and the roller. I still do cake but not enough now to maintain a website. If you want to friend me on FB, please do. It's listed under the Frosted Love name....and thanks so much to Cakewrecks for the recognition. I posted on FB today that having your cake featured on Cakewrecks Sunday Sweets is a very high honor.... It just doesn't get any better! Wreck on!

I am ready to buy my ticket to Caketopia right now!

May 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

OK, I need to understand the engineering of the corset layers. How is that done?

September 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterColin M.

The brown one was my favorite!

September 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Flappergasting! I like it :)
I was gasping and oohing and aahing at ALL the cakes. I also may have fainted a couple times. How much do these cakes cost?

October 4, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJo

I was just browsing around and came across this post. I think these are the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen! I'm glad I didn't miss this.
