What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Baby Cakes

Hey, unborn baby!  I'm planning a party for you! It's called a baby shower. I know it's a little weird that you won't actually BE at this party in your honor, but technically you will, so I thought maybe you'd have some opinions about your cake.

Now, your parents have decided not to reveal your gender.  Or maybe you're a boy... I can't remember.  I'm not good with details.  But anyway, I'm going with a neutral cake theme just to be safe.

Here are some options:

A mama and baby kangaroo cake!  Look at the sweet little kangaroo peeking out of its momma's pouch:

Submitted by Jill L., made by Heather Barranco Dreamcakes

Totally neutral-baby-shower appropriate, wouldn't you say?

Or how about cowboy themed? Or should I say cow-PERSON themed?

By CW reader Annie K.

You're right, let's make it easy on ourselves: western themed.

This one is super cute, and not at all gender specific.  Green and brown with polka dots:

Wait, aren't babies colorblind? Or is that puppies? Maybe someone else should have been in charge of this thing.

Do you like zoo animals? I'll answer that for you: YES.

Submitted by Emma W., made by Cake Avenue

How could you not? These are the cutest things I've seen all day.  Uh, other than those ultrasound pictures your mom showed me, of course. That was, um, totally cute, too. You are a black and white blob of adorableness.

OK, so I'm not the most baby-knowledgeable person on the planet, but I'm doing my best. I do know one thing: It's not cool to smoke, kid.

Submitted by Elizabeth A., made by Sachi S.

No matter how gut-wrenchingly precious that pipe-smoking gnome on your cake is.

And while we're learning life lessons here, I want you to remember that life is like a carousel.  One day you're up. One day you're down. One day you realize it's all nothing more than an endless circle that spits you out in the same place you started.

Um, that was kind of depressing. Sorry. Let's just focus on this amazing cake, which has about seventeen different layers of cuteness happening here.

Know what else it cute? Baby shoes. Trust me on this. Just wave your little baby feet around in anyone's face and they will melt into a puddle of mush. Use this to your advantage.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this cake, baby?  The bow, the binky, the baby shoes... it has it all, am I right?

Here's another option: we combine a bunch of these elements into one.  Big bow, zoo animals, polka dots, bright colors...

By Cake Central Member echocolate

What do you say? Do we have a winner?

Oh, you want MORE zoo animals?  Let me tell you something kid, in real life, zoo animals are not nearly as nice and cutesy as these cakes might lead you to believe. Take it from someone who nearly had her arm chomped off by a dolphin at Sea World.

By My Sweet and Saucy

Here's some more advice: dolphins are jerks.

Birds are nice, though. Check out this pretty pair of birds, nurturing their little egg. That's you!

By Ingenious Cakes

You know, you used to be an egg once.  It all started with these things called 'ovaries' and a magical journey through the 'fallopian tubes'... you know what, this talk can wait 'til later.

OK, this next cake leads me to believe you might be a boy. Not that girls can't have blue, green and yellow cakes. Or be named Ryan. Remember Ryan Starr from American Idol season 1? No?

By Celebrate With Cake!

I don't really either, now that you mention it.

OK, now I'm almost positive you're a boy.  Just a hunch.

Welcome to the world, little guy!

This post is dedicated to Sweets reader Margaret, and her little angel Jonathan.

Aww how precious :D

I'm going to be walking around with a goofy grin all day. These -- and the commentary -- are perfect.

Now, how can I convince my husband that the smoking gnome cake is the traditional celebratory cake of the 23rd anniversary? Because, as of now, it is.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Yes, much better than belly cakes!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJasini

I love little zoo animals made of frosting. If I were an artist frosting would be my artistic medium.

I'm heading over to your Epbot page to search for dophin stories. If there isn't a dophin story there you must write it soon. That is a story I've got to hear. Dolphins are so incredibly cute--how did you find the only deadly dolphin on the planet?

can i just pretend all those cutie-wootie cakes are for me, please? because i just had a little baby boy too, a little more than two weeks ago <3 and the cakes look delicious. and i'm constantly hungry as i'm fully nursing the baby. my hubby calls him milk-tick LOL

Amazing! Much better than belly and "realistic" baby cakes! All of them are very well done, but the bare feet on the bottom layer of the "Western" theme cake... They are BIG!!! I may not have noticed except for the post from earlier this week.... ;-)

Heh, dolphins apparently made the top slot on Cracked.com's list of The 6 Cutest Animals That Can Still Destroy You. I guess weigh for yourselves whether or not you want to read it. (Just like, not in front of the kids, probably, should you choose to do so.)

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNyperold

Can someone please send me periodic reminders that one should not bring a child into the world for the sole purpose of having a smoking red-hatted gnome cake?

Maybe I'll just go to Sharyn's anniversary party instead.

@marnie, ths post wasn't written by Jen, it was by Lindsey from Better After. She writes occasionally on Sunday's.

Congratulations on your bundle of joy, LcP!

These cakes are gorgeous - that carousel cake just blows my mind!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

Yes, baby shoes on a cake are MUCH cuter than baby FEET on a cake!
I've always said that I never want to have a baby shower, but these cakes are almost enough to make me change my mind. Almost.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwaffre

Marnie,

Lindsey wrote today's post, not Jen.

But, several other people may have already pointed this out, and their comments just haven't been approved yet. (Just clarifying so I won't look like an idiot for saying the same thing as 47 previous commenters).

Hurrah! At last, a set of baby shower cakes that don’t make me want to scream in terror. They’re all quite nice, but I think the lion/palmtree one has a charming cartooniness that makes it extra appealing. Nice to know “baby shower cake” doesn’t have to mean “eh, who needs that ‘good taste’ stuff?”

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMike

Hey, now, that could be a bubble pipe that cute-as-a-button little gnome has!! It is a baby cake, after all!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDtuck

I really want to believe that the squiggly line in the "ITS" in the last cake is meant to be the apostrophe, but I'm having difficulty. Otherwise, gorgeous cake!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMC from NZ

What is that lion doing under a palm tree? Also, why is that other lion holding up the baby monkey? Is he giving thanks for his meal?

Birds can also be jerks, especially swans.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

Such beautiful cakes.... much too pretty to eat!!!!!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkitty

These are all lovely cakes! But that "Western-themed" one is only going to be remotely gender-neutral in a liberal household. Just sayin'.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLee

I went to a giraffe themed baby shower last weekend. The cake was very pretty - with awesome ganache filling, and the safari animal cake pops were even cuter. She used sunflower seeds and chocolate chips to add dimensions before coating with fondant. (There is blue trim, even though the baby is a girl.)

I'm not a fan of the term "zoo animals." I know what you mean, but they are wild animals that (ostensibly, for the monkey) live in Africa.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Thank you for the beautiful cakes... that one with the shoes made me think of Jonathan especially. He had such adorable baby feet.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermargaret

Even after that last cake, I'm still convinced it's a girl. Just saying.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAidan

Why am I not at all surprised that there isn't a baker near me? All we've got are walmart and grocery store cakes--boring!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSarah Mae

@MarnieB

The "killer" dolphin resides @ SeaWorld. (I think in California.) The girl in question picked up the little paper tray (plate?) of fish & was holding it over the water to start feeding the dolphins. (See, you're supposed to keep it on the ledge - them's the rules & she said she forgot.) A dolphin jumped up & grabbed the tray & her arm. She let go of the tray & the dolphin let go of her, but left tooth marks in her arm. I think some may have broken the skin, but nothing major. They aren't suing, and SeaWorld gave first aid right away, but they do think the signs should be more explicit. Perhaps the signs should read "Warning, Dolphins have teeth & they bite!"

That dolphin's lucky it wasn't the boy that took out a gator. You shoulda seen the story here in Texas some years back; a gator jumped out of the creek & tried to take a 5-yr old boy on the bank. The boy grabbed his gun & shot the gator. It was a 10 or 12-footer. (The Dad said the farm was in dangerous country (i.e. wild animals) & he felt that all of his family should have a gun & know how to use it.) The kid is now known as "Gator Bait". ;-) Kid you not - go google it...

So many cute baby cakes and not a one with a pregnant belly and weird oversized baby feet pushing out. How refreshing :)

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaphne24

aren't those "magic mushrooms" on the gnome cake?

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterearlleen

Perhaps Mr. and Mrs. Ryan haven't chosen a name for their unborn baby yet, so it's just known as "Baby Ryan."

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjbrecken

Awesome post, Lyndsey- I giggle/snorted a few times but we'll save that talk until later. ;)

KarateLady, I was at the San Diego zoo in the '80s and the bunny cage in the petting zoo had a sign "bunnies can get grumpy and grumpy bunnies bite." My mother and I have called each other grumpy bunnies ever since. Hmmm, great name for a rock band...

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Really? You're hating on the dolphin? And here I thought the dad takin the video was THE biggest *lapsing into Chinese learned from a certain tv show*

Jen - please replace the dolphin hater. I have no love.
Sayin!

December 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmily J

Love the cakes...incredible...but why do you keep referring to lions and giraffes and such as ZOO ANIMALS???? Hmmmmm???

December 11, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterFran_kly

I have a baby girl named Ryan, Mary Ryan officially, but she goes by Ryan. I LOVE THIS!!!!!

December 22, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen

Love the carriage!! Look at that detail. That's a wow for me! Lucky moms.
