What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

A Prayer For Peace

I'm still reeling from the tragedy unfolding in Newtown, Connecticut right now, but John tells me we're already getting complaints about today's original post. When he called to tell me a few minutes ago I was still reading through the news and crying, so I absolutely don't want to further distress any of our readers. Since I realize that joking about horror movies - even goofy ones featuring Christmas characters - may hit some raw nerves today, please consider this your pre-post warning to considering skipping the next post.

I'd also like to say that our hearts and thoughts are with Connecticut, and if ever there was a time to come together as a nation and work together for peace, this is it.

Beautiful very beautiful. My thoughts and prayers go out to those families.............

Thanks. "if ever there was a time to come together as a nation and work together for peace, this is it." You are so correct. Today there should be zero Red states and zero Blue states - only Praying for Peace and Hunting for a Solution states.

Some days we laugh with you. Today we cry with you. But nothing about today has anything to do with you nor is the terrible timing in any way remotely your fault. I know you know this, but sometimes it's good to be told it as well.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermin

Jen you couldn't have possibly known. Thoughts and prayers for all of those affected today

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

It seems absolutely ridiculous for people to be upset by the awful coincidence that this occured today when you had posted your blog for the day. I am sorry that people have nothing better to do than to pick on your blog during a time of tragedy.

Thank you for being so lovely, Jenn. <3

Jen, You couldn't have known. Please don't feel bad. There are so many times when your posts lift my spirits and make me laugh. Today the beautiful cake with the dove made me remember to pray for the peace of the victims and families of the shooting.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercindyb

So beautiful, so gentle. What a lovely offering!

I second min & Emily R's posts.

Thank you for the post. For both posts, actually. I am just finding out in the last 45 minutes what happened earlier today and it breaks my heart. I have been crying off and on since. That being said, there is no way you could have known as you were prepping the first post that this was going to take place. A friend and I had just left our college campus and were unwinding at Starbucks when I saw your first post. We sorely needed the laugh as this has been a very stressful semester for us and our classmates, both personally and with school. I thank you for your humor from the bottom of my heart. I also want to thank you for sharing your heart with us. We know you didn't mean any distress to anyone with the initial post. We love you both.
Thanks again for all that you do!

I was posting goofy pictures on FB of the light up Christmas light necklace (and matching bracelet!) that I got at work today. AFTER that, I saw the posts about Connecticut. I hope nobody thought you were purposely posting anything that might ... you aren't like that. Anybody that follows you should be aware that you're just an average nutball who's not out to HURT anybody. My heart aches. This dove cake is lovely, by the way.

Thank you and I totally agree

Bad timing happens to everyone sometimes. You couldn't have known about the news when you wrote that post.

It's all so tragic.
take good care.

Tears in my eyes. Thank you for this gentle message for those who have lost family today.

Jen, there is no way you could have known what was coming. I didn't hear until a minute ago.

This post is a very nice tribute.

You know, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who didn't think what happened today was a tragedy. It WAS a terrible thing that happened. It is just beyond me why people would think that the earlier post was in any way connected to what happened. I understand that people are upset, but there's no need to go venting those feelings on people who didn't do anything wrong.

I hope you don't feel too badly, Jen. You obviously did nothing wrong, and your statement regarding the incident was lovely and heartfelt.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAli

Beautiful tribute Jen.
I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us are metaphorically sitting in your livingroom crying with you.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

Please don't feel bad about your earlier post. I had heard about the trajedy before seeing it and it brought much laughter to a sad day.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDani

I thought your last post was hilarious! There was no way you could have known what would happen today and f*ck those that don't get that. There is enough really bad sh*t happening in this world that people shouldn't be crappy to you about what is a VERY FUNNY (as always) post. That said, this post and cake are quite lovely.

Praying for peace as well.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterckcpurple

Thank you Jen.
It's always a horrible feeling when something is said and then something takes places that changes the context outside of your control.
May the families of the victims find some peace, some how, some where. My heart is broken and my body is sickened by this.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLo

In no way did I feel that the earlier post was in response or connected to the tragedy, obviously it was written and posted prior. But regardless, it did hit a nerve when I read it. I sincerely appreciate Jen and John removing it in favor of this lovely in memoriam post. We're all crying with you. Thank you, Jen.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Jen and John,

I have said this many times: you guys are the classiest. Thank you so much. You are deeply loved.

Thank you for the update. ((hugs))

Yes, there is no way you could have known what was going to happen.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJasini

You didn't know! I read the previous post before hearing the horrible news. I am so glad I did because I laughed out loud. And now, after hearing the devastating tragic news, I can't stop crying. I look back to earlier in the day when I was innocently laughing at your very funny (as always) post and I'm glad I got some laughter in today before all the crying. xo

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanine

It's so weird to read something and wonder "How is what I'm thinking and feeling EXACTLY what I'm reading from Jen?" I've already had a couple of friends to whom I've recommended Cakewrecks come back to me and say "When did you start writing a blog?".

I'm still teary-eyed thinking about the events in Connecticut. Wishing for peace is something we can all do. Thanks for paving the way with beautiful cake.

<snif>

peace and love and light to you all

I didn't see your early post today, but the fact that you wrote what you did makes me a Cake Wrecks fan for life!

Sad day today, for sure.

... You will help lift sad hearts in the days to come...

You are a beautiful soul, and anybody who thinks differently is wrong.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJasry

Oh, Jen, hugs to you... You couldn't possibly have known. I saw your initial post before all this unfolded, so please don't take it to heart. I know folks are worried and shocked and feel the need to lash out at someone, but it shouldn't be you. We love you. I, too, have been crying off and on since heard about it. Your beautiful words here will be remembered.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJen W

No one could possibly have known what would happen today. Thank you for the follow up post and the beautiful dove.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I'll add my voice to the others - your earlier post was in no way a reflection on what happened later today. I for one laughed and enjoyed it, just like I do all your posts. I appreciate your words about praying for peace, but the mere fact that you have to post that here because others can't separate this blog from reality just saddens me even more. Try not to take their criticism to heart, we're all behind you 100%.

We love you in Arizona. Please keep helping us laugh! Love your steampunk Christmas too!

I showed your earlier post to my sons this morning, before I heard about the tragedy. After staying up 'til 5 to see the midnight showing of The Hobbit + meteor watching, we were all sleep-deprivedly goofy, and we all 3 laughed and laughed as we clicked through CW archives, too. That's me, my 20-year-old and 13-year-old, all laughing together. You helped create that moment of connection & belly laughs, and those moments are the kind of thing that help us get through days like today. {{{John & Jen & your helpers}}}

Sweet, wonderful Jen. You couldn't have known what was going to happen today. We love you. And God please bless and be with those families right now.

beautiful tribute......thank you.

Well done, Jen & John.

Your hearts & your humor do you honor.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarilee

Obviously the people complaining about today's first post from you have no freaking idea how blogs work. And they haven't read here very long, if at all.

You guys are the best. You lighten the load of the world for many people each and every day. God Bless you.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKim

Love, love, love. Always more love. Thanks for this.

I agree; to think that you had done anything to offend is simply ridiculous. Things happen, people need to chill out and realize you aren't personally attacking them, nor are you endorsing the travesty that happened today.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKatie Lynn

I'll join in to say that we know you write these posts WAY ahead of time, not in reaction to what's going on at the moment. There's no way you could put that much work & thought into a knee-jerk reaction.

That being said, I enjoyed the earlier post, too. :)

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranony mouse

I've been crying basically all day. Everytime I turn on the TV there is some more news about this horrible tragedy. I live in North East CT and as the events unfolded, I wanted to get my son at his school. There are vigils being planned all over the state, my town included. My heart goes out to all the families of those who were killed and to all the little children who now have to live with this day for the rest of their lives.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercakewhisperer

Obviously, you did today's original post well in advance of the tragedy, and obviously you had no intention of giving hurt to anyone.

Sadly, some folks think that their own grief, even vicarious grief, gives them license to attack people who have nothing whatever to do with the thing they are lamenting. About such folks, the less said the better.

Thank you for a beautiful post, and for going the extra mile.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkhereva

What everybody else said.

And in case you need to hear it again...

1. You couldn't have known.
2. It's not your fault.
3. You (& everyone in the CW family) have a *beautiful* soul.

(Group hug)

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady

Jen & John,

You are awesome. My heart breaks with you.

This second post was thoughtful and heartfelt, though, not necessary for the majority of us who have felt the love vibes you send through the interwebs on a daily basis.

Hugs and prayers for all.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

What a lovely post-the doves are beautiful, and so is the sentiment.
I for one hope I would never confuse a blog dedicated to daily silliness with insensitivity to victims. I hope no one else has either. We are all stunned by what has happened.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjulimari

"Because every time you see them happy you remember how sad they're going to be. And it breaks your heart, because what's the point in them being happy now if they're going to be sad later? The answer is, of course, because they are going to be sad later."

We need the happiness to store up for when tragedy strikes.

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterThe Doctor

Let's take a moment to remember that 99.9% of people on this planet are good and not let this incident make us think otherwise. When life throws these kinds of things at us, we need to look for beauty in the world for validation that our beliefs are correct. Yes, let's definitely mourn the terrible loss of today, but let us also remember the good. Heck, look at all the wonderful posts here in support of Jen. If any of you are looking for further validation that the world is still amazing, check out http://www.givesmehope.com and http://happynews.com Those two sites are my go-to sites when times get a bit overwhelming. :)

December 14, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterwildmaven

Thanks for both of the posts today. I'm glad you didn't pull the original one (which was hilarious!) - it's bad enough when you have to post an Epcot because of a cranky baker (or some other "$@f3w@y" place!) ;-)

But I, too, am heartbroken by what has happened, and my prayers and thoughts are with all families affected by the tragedy in CN, including the police who have to sort it all out. *sigh*
