What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Say Again?

It's a fundamental fact of life that the more ridiculously off base a misspelling, the funnier it is.

So, "Congradulations?" Not particularly funny. "Controdulatior?" Funny.

And this?

HYSTERICAL.

Then there are the times when everything is technically spelled correctly, but...

(I don't know what's happening here, but I "like" it.)

I guess we can't judge this next wreckerator too harshly, since "Bon Voyage" isn't actually English; it's French. And we can't expect bakers to know French, now, can we? OF COURSE NOT. So don't even THINK about laughing. Seriously. It's a simple, honest-to-goodness mistake that ANYONE could easily ma...uh.

Oh, dear.

Never mind.

("Have a nice trip! See you next fail!")

Thanks to Deb, Deborah A., & Terye B. for the stop, drop, and ROTFL.

Sung to "We are Family"

We home "family"
Goob by to Kate's lucky booby
We home "family"
Von vau jage to B. A. Gibby

We home family!
I got all my quotemarks with me!
We home family!
Get up everybody and wreck!

Long live Sister Sledge.

Do you suppose Adrian felt slighted?

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDB

Hmm... these are awful!! I'm going to guess the second one was supposed to be Welcome Family, but taken from some sloppy handwriting so the L and C looked like an H?! Possible. No excuse for not double checking that though. Jeez Louise!

Why does this make me think of "Fragile.(fra-gee-lay) It must be Italian."?

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Awe. Some.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy Anne

@ DB Adrian was only going part way on that trip so he gets smaller lettering. Though it looks like maybe Becca was a substitute traveller at the last minute.

Loving the Saryn and DB posts this morning. Some song parodies just write themselves, don't they?

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRamey

Cake numer 1 - If you imagine this being said by a 1930's child star, (think Jackie Cooper or Shirley Temple) it is actually correct.

Cake number 2 - They simply left out a comma and an exclamation point. It should read,
"We home, "Family!" " (are all of those quotation marks "correct"?"")
What group of close, yet legally unrelated, people wouldn't love to see that message on a cake welcoming them to their new abode? I find it "touching."

Cake number 3- Has anyone considered that "Von Vau Jage" might just be an actual French Phrase. I know there are a lot of Canadians on here, (hi!) perhaps they can provide a translationl.

And to the tune of "American Pie"...

“Goob by Bust of duck” makes me cry
Will I ever find a cake with a message I’d buy?
We home “family”, in case you want to drop by(?!)
Thinking this’ll be the day I choose pie.
This’ll be the day I choose pie.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterzoomom

Oh, and is We home "family" like We home "School"?

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdrgns4vr

I went to a craft show this past week-end and one vender was selling a kid's toy, and offered "Free Personized."

@zoomom: (1) one of the funniest movies ever, based on the writings of one of America's funniest writers...(2) lol....
@SuBee: ""Good' """work"'
@Sharyn, zoomom, and DB: do I sense a CakeWreck's trio in the wings....? Could be popular at bakery openings everywhere...!

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermel

At least the balloons on the "Goob By" cake look like balloons instead of gametes!

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterHolly Wood-Noone

No, you misunderstand that first wreck... It's explaining the cause of its own wreckiness, immortalized in frosting... The "goof" was "caused" by Kate's Bust of Luck. No, really. HONest... Would the voices lie? (blinkblink)...

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

DB: Jinx -- one of us owes the other a badly-rendered wrecklica of a Coke, done in cake (preferably with Elite Icing.)

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSharyn

Lolol'ing at all of the song parodies people are posting XD XD

The funniest thing about cake #1 is that the recipient's name is actually Roger.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjackwire

"Have a nice trip, see you next fall" always makes me think of the scene from the movie "Sybil" where her mom trips her down the stairs. *shudder*

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCaren

Von Vou jage? Ja, ju betcha!

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentergobbler

It is clear that these bakeries employed competent decorators and only used the wreckorators for the inscriptions. Look at those roses! The balloons? Oh, my. For someone has seen way too many little swimmers masquerading as "balloons" these were a revelation! I hear-by declare these: "The Best Piped Party Balloons Posted on Cake Wrecks (Possibly Excepting Sunday Sweets Posts.)" It's a long title, but totally well deserved.

Were I that decorator I would be strangling the wrecorator's neck right now for ruining my pretty cake.

Jackwire - Was Roger under Dunne?

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Showing the last cake to my French husband, he looked at it for a moment, blinked, looked at me, looked back at it and said "I thought it was supposed to be German"

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAylsa

I did a Bing translate for Von Vau Jage and it translated into the Hunt of Vau. So happy hunting Becca, Adrian, and Gibby. Or Run Vau run!!!

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKitty Soft Paws

There used to be a restaurant in one of the suburbs of a major Northeastern city that, for a fancy touch on its carry-out menu, added Julia Child's famous "French Chef" tag line. Only the typesetter didn't know how to spell French correctly, and so this is what appeared on thousands of flyers and takeout menus:

"Bon apetit."

These wrecks almost make me want to wish everyone a Happy Falker Satherhood.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeepBunny

When I was younger, I had a "Bust of Luck," but now it's just a drag. Ba dum bum!

The last cake is trilligual: German, Albanain, and Norwegian. That's impressive! I'm not sure what "of steppingstone chase Becca Adrian Gibby" means, but it sounds kind of scary.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

The third cake might be a word cloud rather than an actual message. If so, Gibby is trending. Also, I'd like to see more data presented in dessert format.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I think from now on when i wish someone a good trip, I'll just use this cake's phonetic pronunciation and say "Von Va-jayjay!". Though that might seem inappropriate if the imminent vacationer is a man.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLiz in Seattle

Geez you guys, the cakes are so wrong on so many levels but you guys are killin' me in the comments!

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

@Caren- Don't worry, there is a whole book out about how the whole Sybil thing was a hoax. I saw it at my B&N the other day, along with Wreck the Halls:)
As for the mithspellings and "quotes", just when you think it can't get any worse... Although the first one does make more sense in Shirley Temple's voice.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterjulimari

My husband won't stop saying "Boob by, bust of luck" and miming big boobs and laughing like crazy. He says he's funnier than Cake Wrecks. Don't worry, as you can see, he's not that funny.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPuppygirl

Bonjour mes ami(e)s! I work as a translator in Toronto, and I just gotta say: uh, no. Sorry, SuBee, it is indeed as bad as you feared.

But hey, c'est la vie! C'est la guerre! C'est la dreck.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStriderGirl

I'm just happy to see a cake with balloons that do not look like gigantic sperm.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterdeb

The third cake looks like someone was trying to do the European languages and couldn't quite manage it.

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura Saxon

@Sharyn ~ Now I wanna see a Coke cake wreck with Elite icing. Got anything like that Jen???
@Liz in Seattle ~ I think I just died! Thanks for the Grey's reference! :-)
@Puppygirl ~ I think I love your husband! In a completely non stalkerish way ;-)

November 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJodee in WA

Such a tragedy. The cakes are beautifully decorated and then some evil person snuck into the wreckerators fridge at night and put all those misspelled words on there lol. Must be the competition..yeah that's a likely story.

November 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

forget breast implants- I want a Bust of Luck!! Powerball's at about $500 gazillion this week, don't ya know.
