What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

I live in South Africa, and I have been following Cake Wrecks for some time now, but never left a comment before, but this Sunday Sweet was AMAZING!

I was singing the song in my head as I was scrolling down, in between gasping at the fantastic creations (love, love, love the sprinkles, now THAT is how to use sprinkles!) and when I got to the Kermit Cake I was blown away!

Well done guys! You make my day - Every Day!

Cake 2: best use of sprinkles. Ever.

I am just in awe of these cakes! And Heather's lyrics.

I used to have this CDwhen my son (now 17) was little. Time to head over to iTunes to make a purchase!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTLC

my mind was blown by the unicorn Pegasus and the amazing string work on the 3 tiered cake with the flowers in between & spilling down the sides.

I don't even know why am I crying about cake DARN YOU AND YOUR SENTIMENTALISM AND BEAUTIFUL CAKES!!! :D

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStoich91

Yay Kermie!! I admit it, I was singing along to the post, and now I've got the song stuck in my head. But I'm not complaining! Beautiful cakes!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDegera

"Rainbow Connection" is a waltz, which explains why it strikes so many people so strongly. Great cakes and a wonderful post!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTXRed

Brings tears to my eyes! Life-long Muppet fan. Sooooooo lovely!!!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTrudy

Possibly my favorite Sunday Sweets ever--and that's saying something, because I love the Geeky Sweets, especially Harry Potter and dragons. (And oh, so glad I wasn't the only who got choked up by this one.) Thanks for an amazing post.l

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

Absolutely gorgeous! Great post!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCheryl

I love the posts that I can sing along to!! These are also gorgeous cakes.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCharlie

OMG...sprinkles done RIGHT!!! I may just pass out.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMary

So pretty!

And apparently I can't "read" this song. My brain refuses. It must sing the lyrics as I go. Hehe.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCam

*sniffle* Thanks, seriously...just, thanks. Best Sunday Sweets Ever :'-) *sniffle*

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDenita TwoDragons

Very well done! Thank you for a very sweet Sunday :-)

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLisa

What a perfect ending! :-)

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

This one made me so happy! Love #1...reminds me of 80s children's clothing/bedspreads/wallpaper. Rainbow hearts for everybody!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChristieLea

Aw... sniff... so pretty.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMe

#7 is like the opening credits of "Wonder Woman" in cake.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNo Capes

The unicorn reminds me of a storybook I had as a kid called Whisper, the Winged Unicorn. :-) All of these are gorgeous!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMiranda

I think I may pass out from sweetness and cuteness in cakes.

<SLAP>
Oh..ok. I'm back.
Thank you for that.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterStacy

I swear that eight-year-old me had a shirt that looked JUST LIKE the first cake.

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterWinona

Awwww...I was already getting teary and then Kermie put me right over the edge. :)

Also, I just uploaded a Maui beach harp cover of "Over the Rainbow" a couple of days ago, so I've had rainbows on my mind. (While I was on Maui I saw the most spectacular rainbow I've ever seen, bar none, over the ocean as I was driving the Hana Highway. Almost went right off the road gawping at it.)

Thanks for the great post! (I sooooo want that unicorn cake for my next birthday!)

Molly

Three of my all time favorites---rainbows, the song, and KERMIT! I love all the cakes, especially the rainbow hearts, the sprinkles (they look like spheres, so I think that they're called "nonpareils") and, of course, Kermit. What a great post---thank you!!!!

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

@Diana -- The Beatles end up in the Peter Max-inspired "Pepperland". The hand you remember is "the dreadful flying glove", a minion of the evil "Blue Meanies!".

"Once upon a time, or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland.
80,000 leagues beneath the sea it lay, or lie. I'm not too sure."

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCapt. Video

Ahem.

I WANT THE UNICORN CAKE.

Not to eat... just to look at and think about, and as a catalyst for dreams about good and wonderful things in the world. :)

October 7, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnise

Such a beautiful post. It would have been great on Jim Henson's birthday last month (September 24), but with the rain we've had where I am... it's perfect.

And of course, you end it with Kermit! How could you not? My nephew LOVES him!

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

I love every single one of those cakes! My favorites are the first two, the unicorn-Pegasus, and of course, Kermie. <3

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLydia

What everyone else said... Me too! ~sigh~

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

I sang the song as I scrolled (and drooled!) my way down. LOVE the Kermit at the end! So appropriate! And I have to agree that #2 is the best use of sprinkles ever! #4 is so amazing in its minimalism, and I'd love to have other views of #5. They're all gorgeous!

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCat

This is a song I've always loved. It's a childhoood memory. Thank you for this Sunday Sweet, it is the first post that brought tears to my eyes not of hysterical laughter but memories...thank you.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJulie

I love Sunday Sweets! I wish you would extend it to Monday as well. And maybe Tuesday. Then I think I would get enough, and you could go back to wrecks for Wednesday through Friday. =)

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTatiana

what a lovely theme to have, brightened up our rainy Sunday. Amazing job!

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRebecca

Wow, I was not expecting Kermit at the end and when he popped up I nearly burst into tears! So perfectly beautifully appropriate.

I too grew up with the old LP, and recognized that unless I did something, my children would not have this beautiful song in their hearts. So I bought the DVD of the Muppet Movie, and it really was only last Friday that my 5yo daughter watched it. :)

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterheather

Synchronicity! I was just watching the new Muppets movie yesterday, and here this pops up.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

Probably one of my favorite posts. I wasn't sure what was going to come up with the "and me" - and that is an absolutely incredible Kermit cake. This is one of my favorite songs, because I used to sing it to my kidlet at bedtime, back when my kidlet was young enough to want to be sung to sleep. So this post really made my heart smile.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAlison

As a "Wizard of Oz" lover, I was wondering why you didn't use "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" as the song for this one. It would have been perfect.

Then I got to the final cake and saw Kermie. And it all made sense. The song was perfect - as were all the cakes! :-)

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLinda

Beautiful.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

*Sigh* This makes me want to climb into my Rainbow Brite Snuggie and eat cake. Not any of these, of course, they are too wonderful to eat.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvalyn

Is it crazy for a 37-old woman to cry like a baby because of a song performed by a frog? Because I can't help myself. And I LOVE all of the cakes! I second the "best post EVER" comments!

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEfreet

Oh wow, I don't think I could bring myself to cut into and eat any of these masterpieces.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commentersmoo

So it took me extra long to read through this because I had to sing along. The best was scrolling down to Kermit while hitting "and me." This so made my day. :)

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKit

I'm bookmarking this post and will come back to it every time I'm feeling sad. Thank you CW Team :)

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMadTigerKitty

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

My eyes have misted over so I can't see the lrubpstf. Dpttu.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlisadh

these comments are proof positive that it is the simple, sweet moments that mean the most to us. I have smiled more at this post and the comments than I would have believed possible. maybe this is what being a geek is- not the big, drama moment for attention but the subtle, little "we're all together on this one" thoughts.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara Anne

Paul Williams wrote that little ditty. He's awesome.

October 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVandalfan

Beautiful cakes! Love the song and the Kermit cake... I have an ornament with Kermit sitting on a log holding his banjo, a butterfly floating behind him, and when a tiny button on the back of the log is pushed, he sings the last few lines of the song. My grandson, almost 5, absolutely loves it!

It's a horrible photo but I can't find a better one... here's our rainbow juggling wedding cake! http://www.flamingoclub.org/images/bill_katje_wedding/sm082.jpg
