What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Put A Bird On It

Whether you're a fan of Portlandia or not, I think we can all agree that when it comes to cake, sometimes you just need to put a bird on it.

Maybe a proud bird:

By Cut the Cake

(If I could pipe like that, I'd be proud, too.)

Or a magical bird:

Submitted by Louisa B. and made by Eline at DreamCakeFactory; more pics here.

Hedwig loves you THIS MUCH.

Or some pretty jailbreak birds:

By The Icing on the Cake

With apologies to Maya Angelou: I know why the un-caged bird tastes so good.

(They're flying. They're free!)

How about some modern birds?

Submitted by Emma F. and made by Josef's Vienna Bakery & Cafe

"Spruce it up. Make it pretty!"

Or a really little Big Bird?

By Cakes By Joanna

DO WANT GIMMIE.

No?

How 'bout just the three figures, then? Please?

Of course, there's always an angry bird:

By SweetBeas

(With guest stars from the movie Rio)

I'm trying to imagine what three-year-old Noah could have possibly done to deserve a cake this awesome. Did it involve potty-training? 'Cuz I've got that DOWN, SweetBeas. Just sayin'.

And now even more angry birds because seriously-how-cute-is-this:

By Juicy Desserts

By the by, last month Angry Birds had a holiday level titled Wreck the Halls, and this month they have a birthday level full of cakes to smash. COINCIDENCE?

Ok, yeah, probably. But I choose to believe we have CW fans over there. So THERE.

Now a cutey-patooty bird:

Submitted by Kelly K. and made by Just Call me Martha

I'm picturing frills and satin pillows and floofy princess skirts. [dreamy sigh]

Followed by...a Hunger Games bird?

Submitted by Affifa R. and made by deathbycupcake (And you can buy just the toppers at the link! Sweet!)

Aww yeeeah. Technically it's a mockingjay - and if you've read the books, you know how awesome these are. The odds are definitely in DeathByCupcake's favor.

Let's wrap things up with some rainbow birds:

Submitted by Sarah C. and made by Nevie-Pie Cakes

I usually don't know who the bakers are when I choose each week's Sweets, so you might be wondering just how many times I can feature Nevie-Pie Cakes in one year. Ha! Seriously, though, Natasha has enough talent to fuel a dozen bakers. Love her style.

And finally, another pair of sweet tweeters:

Submitted by Becca S. and made by Scrummy Mummy's Cakes

...on a giant cupcake!

I love the rose swirls and the woodgrained basket base. And I know you could technically call this a cupcake cake, but we won't be doing that - WILL WE? [meaningful glare] Nope. Let's not sully this beautiful creation with the dreaded CCC [ptooie!] label.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com!

I want the cupcakes that go with the "cutey-patooty" - they made me sqeeeeeee!

As for that last cake, there is a world of difference - a WORLD!!!! - between a cake made of a single giant cupcake and one made of a bunch of little cupcakes pretending to be a real cake; that's all I'm saying. *nods head*

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

That last one isn't a CCC! Its a cake, shaped like a cupcake :) Completely different thing entirely and thus does not deserve any negative connotations, mostly because its so darn pretty! I'm loving all of them, but the peacock has to be my favorite!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEmmer

See? Sometimes cup cake cakes are NICE!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

I would just take the cupcakes from Jasmine's cake and have them for my birthday. (Love having a spring birthday). And I also squeed at the Sesame Street cake. How cute is that!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraV

Come home to me, baby Cookie Monster! So cute.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterlz

Not a cupcake cake (CCC), clearly a Cake-sized cupcake (CSC) - world of difference.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Thanks for featuring my bird cake, I do like a cake with a bird on! xxx

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNatasha (Nevie-Pie Cakes)

I like that Hedwig's all "come at me bro" on those books. It's pretty cool.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

They are all beautiful - however - the large swirling roses being the 'frosting' on the giant cupcake is positively genius ;-} So simple but So effective!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKaren.Valinda

I adore these cakes with the birds on them. I don't know if I could ever eat them, though. They're all so TWEET!!! ^^

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBea

So in love with that Peacock Cake!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPourGirl

Can I request some fondant free Sunday Sweets, please?

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterErica

HEDWIG IS SO CUTE! And there's the locket! And a wand! And the Snitch! And books! And I love Harry Potter way too much! Now can we get an eagle from Ravenclaw(my house!)? I'm thinking it woud be perfect.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

Looks like DOC can stand down for a few hours...

#10 ROY G. BIV thanks that decorator. As do I.

#11a Awww! 50 years and still lovebirds! That rocks!

#11b Oh look -- a real cupcake cake. I thought that before reading the caption, ok?

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Oh wow, the Sesame Street cake makes me go all goopy. I wish I had a fraction of these decorators' talent.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJules

Very pretty bird cakes! If you ever find a cake with flamingos on it, I will be one very happy lady!!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Z.

I don't usually comment on Sunday Sweets, only because it would feel strange saying "These are gorgeous! Great work!" fifty-two times a year, every year.

That being said, these are gorgeous! Great work!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

AWESOME CAKES!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKate

There are no words for the love I feel for those Hunger Games cupcakes.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGabs

I love these cakes! And I love Portlandia! (says the girl that lives in Portland) Absolutely love the peacock cake.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

"The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland"
Uh yeah, Portlandia is awesome :)
As are all those cakes!

Aaaahhhh!!! Yay!!!! SO excited to be featured again:-D couple things... Yes!! That cake is buttercream and hand piped on. And you want flamingos? We've done em!! Thanks Jen and John!!! <3 <3 <3 from the girls at Cut the Cake!!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJaimz

Ok, these are beautiful and all, but I can't like them because birds in the house are SUCH bad luck. Anyone else? Maybe if you had a garden party you can have the. Yes, ok, I've decided that all these cakes were for garden parties. Now, I think they're lovely! The birdcage might be my favorite - AND it appears to actually be at a garden party!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

I love these cakes! I definitely believe in the power of "putting a bird on it". I even named my blog "Bird On A Cake"! Cakes + birds = awesomeness!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobin @ Bird On A Cake

Being from Portland, I love the reference. But I LOVE these cakes more! They're . . . wait for it . . . BIRD-iful!

How cheese-tastic was that?

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRachel

I love Portlandia! Beautiful cakes, too.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRobin

Like I always say... cupcake cakes rock!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSusanna

This is definitely worth Tweeting! Hahaha!

Sorry.

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

My birthday is Wednesday and I love cupcakes (individual ones, that is). I'm also Team Peeta. So, the question is, who's getting my birthday Hunger Games cupcakes and where can I meet you to pick them up?? :)

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

These are great! But they do make me think of the Portlandia sketch too, lol. "I put a bird on this cake. It's a bird. I bet it's flying all over the beach."

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmber

Could a 3-year-old kid really be that fond of Angry Birds? I can't get over the feeling that this cake was more about Mom and Dad showing off.

Then again, I don't know squat about Angry Birds. Parents give kids their iPhones to keep them occupied all the time. If a kid's been playing with and drooling on an expensive gadget for 2/3 of his life, maybe he can figure out how to play.

Or was the cake a sample the decorator made?

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPuzzled

Thanks for featuring my angry birds cake!!!!!!!!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJosie

HUNGER GAME CAKES?!?!?!?! I can hardly wait. Get bakin' bakers!
I LOVE it!

January 15, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

I live in the Portland-Vancouver (yes, there's one in the US) metro area, just across the river from Portland, so I hear about Portlandia a lot. The most I hear is that, although we love it and laugh at it, it's not a documentary. Really. We haven't quite reached that level of twee urbanity yet. I read that phrase in "The Oregonian" newspaper the other morning as I was drinking my chai. Seriously.

Secondly, my twin daughters just celebrated their 9th birthday; we had custom cakes made for them. One girl wanted Angry Birds cupcakes, the other wanted a Smurf-themed cake. They turned amazing. I haven't had a chance yet, but I intend to nominate them for Sunday Sweets, because this baker is super talented!

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

What a sad little cupcake... put a bird on it! :) I love the giant 50th cupcake! My second favourite is the "Jasmine" cake with cupcakes. Although I'm a fan of Hunger Games - please can we not have it turn into another "Twilight-esque" Team thing? Please??

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAriel

Thank you so much for featuring my cutie-patutie-bird cake :-)
When I heard I was featured on Cake Wrecks my heart almost plummeted, not with happiness but uh-oh what now lol

cheers,
Leoni

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeoni

Hooray for angry birds cake! And of course they read this, it's completely logical (I read this + I'm a finn + Angry birds is Finnish -> they read this) :)

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteremmita

I wish I had a 100th of the talent.

I have Angry Birds Rio on my Droid. ;)

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterev

The last one just made me MAD. I asked for one giant cupcake for a wedding cake and was told it couldn't be done (after they told me they couldn't do lots of cupcakes because they didn't have a stand to put them on).

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkim

Props to Angry Birds/Rio! The detail on Nigel's eyes and feathers left me speechless! Noah is one lucky 3 year old.

Side note - I have a 3 year old Noah and his cake wasn't anywhere near this fantabulous. My supermom rating just dropped by about 10 points...sigh.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLeaJasper

I'm so excited! Me, a little dutch girl, on Sunday Sweets! You can't see it, but I'm glowing in the dark now, from pure joy!! Thank you Cake Wrecks, en of course thank you Hedwig!

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEline

Angry Bird Cake! Ca-CAWWW! Awesome!

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMumsykat

I have only started reading the Hunger Games recently... Peeta would be proud of these cakes.

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterG

You DO understand that we can pickle that, right? Okay, in the interests of being strictly accurate, I'll have to pickle that in Tigard, which will never make it onto an episode of Portlandia, because it's not cool enough, being a suburb. And is in Washington County, not Multnomah. But still, we will put a bird on that cake and then pickle it and do a coffee pour-over. :)

January 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAnise

I want those cupcakes for my wedding!
Why, you ask?
Because fighting my bridal party would be awesome!!!

April 3, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKarateLady's Daughter

I love angry birds and the peacock!

July 8, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLola
