What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Thanks to Nicole S. for the specifics.

Generic comment.

Perhaps they meant "geriatric."

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

at least they got sprinkles...but did they want sprinkles? is that generic enough? and what about the balloons and ribbons? those colors are for a specific taste- I personally don't like pastels so the ribbons appeal to me but the balloons don't- FAIL!! it's just not generic enough.

And yet I feel unique, since it is my birthday. Irony! Delightful irony!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErin

At least they spelled it right. :) Don't they get points for that?

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCeeCee

....and Amie means "loved."

Or it could just mean "liked...."

What's the French for "tolerated"? Maybe, "existence acknowledged"?

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristian

If they're using the French word for friend -- amie -- it's even better.

I thought generic brands were black & white...is it unique now that it has some color?

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLoo-E Loo-I

At least it isn't "Generic Happy Birthday [Your Name Here]"

This reminds me of a play we did in elementary school. The teacher added an extra role and temporarily titled it "Generic". Being a rather dull group of kids who didn't know what the word meant we voted to leave it as the character's name. Thus, my sister played the role of "Generic", the girl you've never heard of in Swiss Family Robinson.

I believe this signals the beginning of the inevitable backlash against the era of unique children.
For years we’ve been told ,“Every child is exceptional,“ “Everyone’s a winner,” “Of course you deserve that perfect attendance medal, Billy! You only missed six days of school!!” Well it’s about time we go back to the good old days when no one was special. NO ONE, I TELL YOU.
We all deserve a generic happy birthday; nothing more and nothing less.
I look forward to the first generic wedding cake.
Have a good day

Perhaps it was Gene and Eric misspelled?

There's nothing like being made to feel special....and this was nothing like being made to feel special!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCaroline B

I had something similar happen when I helped write my mom's funeral program. I had verbally sketched things out, with things like "sappy song" and "family tear-jerker stories". The church (and my slightly clueless dad) left all that in for the final printing, even after proper text was supplied. Maybe they were trying to lighten the mood. It's been 16 years and I still cringe at the memory.

You are a fluke of the universe...

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

Well then! I turn 43 on the 13th... will my boyfriend wreck me a cake to make me feel special? :D Maybe it will say "naked carrot people!" XD

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergothchiq

At last, a cake for the terminally unique...

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterleorising

Why generic? i feel like laughing but at the same time puzzled.

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTina @ wedding favors

I want a generic birthday cake! That would make me feel so special. :(

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermiss_paper

A truly generic cake should be gender-neutral. Therefore, the writing and the border should have been gray.

'Arnie'? 'Amil'? 'Anvil'?

"We're all special, Dash."
"If everyone is special, that's exactly the same as saying no one is."

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Way to make me feel good about myself :(

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMINDY1

It wasn't my cake, but my name is unusual enough that I have to react to that... MY NAME ON A CAKE! even with the generic in front... Amie

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmie

They not only got sprinkles, but pretty plastic balloons and fun curly ribbon!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannan

Cursed with a name like Mary Smith, I am always telling people my middle name is Generic. Maybe this is my cake and I am so generic they forgot to tell me??!!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMary Smith

It also isn't my cake, but I kinda wish it was, because I really want some cake right now!!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmie

The writing even looks like it was done indifferently.

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeigh Ann

Maybe they meant "genetic"? Like she was a test tube baby and they are celebrating the petri dish?

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeanna

A very Merry Generic Birthday to you, to you.
A very Merry Generic Birthday to you.
Now, don't you feel special?

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjellen

BWA, HAHAHAHAhAHAahAhAHAHahaHAhahaHAhahaHAAHaha!!!

That is all.

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBADKarma

Just having the word "Generic" makes it different.

Just saying...

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDale

Jellen, you cracked me up!I feel so "Generic" now! LOL

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGertrude

People write in all the time saying they chuckle, giggle, and snort coffee all over their monitors, but I don't usually laugh audibly. This post made me laugh out loud in a crowded restaurant. Sorry, Amie.

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraCVT

Even if the baker didn't think you were unique enough for a non-"Generic" birthday cake, WE think you're unique, Amie!

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSaraM

I often check your blog for inspiration (Sunday Sweets) and "what not to do" on my cakes .. instead, I get a heck of a good laugh and end up spending my whole lunch hour (and more!) reading up on old posts and hoping none of my work end up on your site! hehehe ...

September 7, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIssie

{me}: "It never gets old!!"
{hubby}: <chuckle> "I think I've come to the conclusion that cake decorators are the most moronic people on the planet."

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLori

Well, (insert name her), I know this has been a special year. A year full of things happening. Remember that time, when the funny thing happened? Oh, how we laughed. Of course, itc's not all balloons and sprinkles, we've had sad times too. Which I won't go into right now because of privacy. All in all, I just want to sum up our relationship with this cake, especially for you. And not for anyone else. See? It has your name on, *checks cake* Amie!

I love this kind of wreck, I always hope I'll be the generic one someday...

September 8, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLiessa

My Amie would have gotten a kick out of this cake. I know this because she sent me this link! But at the end of the day, after laughing at the cake....she would be pleased that the spelling of her name was correct! and that it wasnt spelled Arnie or Annie or Amy or Amiee!
