What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Geek Wedding Cakes!

Hi guys! john (the hubby of Jen) here. Jen asked me to write Sweets this week since she is apparently "busy" doing "everything else." (What? I moderate comments!)

Now, the problem is that today we have thoroughly awesome geek wedding cakes, and I am not, in the strictest sense of the word, a geek. At least, not to the degree which I've married into. However, for your entertainment and enlightenment I will now valiantly attempt to decipher these cakes without the help of Jen OR the interwebs. (May the Shwartz be with me!)

Right then! Our first cake...

...is something steampunky! (Is that a word?) The gears and general awesomeness give it away. I also guarantee that when Jen and I get married again (to each other, I mean), our wedding cake will be something like this.

Oh, good, another easy one:

Submitted by Jess; baker unknown. Anyone recognize it?

Batman and Wonder Woman! Great colors. And I think the bottom tier is... Metropolis? Maybe?

K, now they're getting harder:

Sub'd by Amanda H. and made by Dufflet

Right. The adorable mushroom toppers are from a Mario game, and the cake is decorated in binary. Booyah. Just don't go asking me to translate it. (And if you do, I'll guess it's something like "In geekiness, and in über geekiness, I thee wed.)

Now we're getting old school:

Oh yeah. PacMan and Mrs. PacMan! I missed a lot of my childhood because of those two. And PacMan should always wear a top hat, don't you think?

Look! It's Epcot!

Sub'd by Leah M. and made by Vallum House Cakes

Just kidding. (It's Spaceship Earth) (And no, that actually doesn't ever get old.)

Actually, I know that the thing on the side is an AT-AT because Jen has a baby one on her desk, and I know that Chewy would not be marrying an Ewok. (Though it's adorable on the cake.)

Okay! I'm on a roll! This next one is...um...

Sub'd by Chris M. and made by Pink Cake Box

No clue. I see math and hearts. Is there a video game with math and hearts? No?

(Why is Jen sighing so loudly behind me? And what is xkcd?)

Oh boy, I'm gonna get in trouble for this next one:

Sub'd by Maj G.; baker unknown

Is it... Zelda? Made of Lego? I don't... I never played it, so...

*sigh*

Look, this is harder than it looks, Ok?

Uh-oh..

Made by redpanda19

Oh! Oh! I know this! What is that show called?!? It's on the tip of my mind. It's got Bender and... that cyclops lady... Futurama!

Haha! And I've never even seen it!

Also, that crash-landing into the cake thing is genius.

This one I definitely know:

Cake by Queen of Cakes and topper by Sweet Frost Tops

Portal! Jen and I are actually playing the co-op version now.
(Well, not now now. I'm writing this post now. You get the idea.)

On a side note, I just realized something: If you write "The cake is a lie" on a cake, isn't that statement itself a lie? Technically, the lie is a lie since the cake is a cake.

Aaand now my brain hurts.

Let's wrap this up with one of my favorite cakes of all time, made by a baker who made one of our book tour cakes in Austin:

By Coco Paloma Desserts; photo by Sweet Caroline Photography

Godzilla!

And also a... transformer version of Godzilla?

Ya know, I just realized: I've never seen Godzilla. So Transformer Mrs. Godzilla could totally be in there. Huh.

Here's another angle:

Aaaamazing. Especially when you realize that the 'Zillas are edible. 'Cuz, oh yes, they are.

(And speaking of figures, did you notice the bride is holding the groom? Too funny.)

Well, I hope you enjoyed these geeky wedding Sweets, everyone. And if you have a Sweet of your own you'd like to share, please send it to Sunday Sweets (at) Cake Wrecks (dot) com.

Oh, and have a great Sunday.

I'll be playing Portal.

1ST! LOL!

Thank you John, for explaining these in a way that I (a non-geek) can understand. My daughter is still asleep and, as gifted as she is, could not decipher them for me.
She will absolutely want that "math and hearts" cake for her wedding.
Or maybe her sweet sixteen.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSuBee

lmbo! Great job! If we can't have Jen, you make a wonderful substitute : )

Cute cakes-wish I understood them better

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I am married to a monster movie expert -- the transformer Godzilla is actually Mechagodzilla, who battled the real Godzilla is a knock-down drag-out destroy Tokyo brawl. At any rate, it's a brilliant cake!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbozoette

I'd say you did a great job guest hosting, John!

Personally I've never played a video game for long before getting the irresistible urge to stop and check my email.

I hope someone can translate the hearts and math cake for us, because while I'm not all that good at it myself, I appreciate an ordinary sentence expressed in computer language.

That xkcd cake is purely amazing!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFixer

I believe the bottom tier of the Wonder Woman/ Batman cake is actually Union Terminal, located in Cincinnati, OH. It is now called the Cincinnati Museum Center.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAriel S.

The bottom tier on the Batman/Wonder Woman cake it the Justice League HQ. Last seen in comics in DC. That and these cakes are great! XKCD in 3D!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Steampunk!!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterThe English Teacher

The XKCD cake is totally made of awesome! I would renew my vows just to have that cake. :)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

That may be the comic book Metropolis, but I live in the real Metropolis and I can tell you for sure that it looks nothing at all like that!

xkcd cake exists. My life is complete.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBriony

The lie is a lie? This is too philosophical for me at this point in the day. I'll come back for that one after lunch. ;)

wv: fancyter (in best rural accent)-- Them geek cakes look too fancyter eat.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercc

Sweet pixelation,
Batman! Is that the Hall of
Justice of the Peace?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

"Briony said... xkcd cake exists. My life is complete."

x2

John you've done us geeks proud. Well done, thank you.

Every time someone mentions the ATA gene (from Stargate: Atlantis, for those not in the know), I always picture a microscopic AT-AT running amuck and blasting the bejebus out of the pitiful human genes.... but maybe that's just me.

These cakes are nerdvana

(I think I have today's fb status)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertjbmurph

Huh! I had no idea that Mechagodzilla was a girl!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The Portal one would only be cooler if the exit portal was on the side of the cake and they were about to go flying across the room.

The Portal 2 co-op levels are awesome! It's not just the things that "physically" take two people; it's the way the puzzles can be solved by brainstorming.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDoctor Tarr

EPCOT! LOL!!!!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBea

The xkcd cake can't be translated. That's the point, there's no equation for love.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

The godzillas are wearing a top hat and veil too. LOL!!!
I can't believe they are edible. Great photo op of someone munching their heads off.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p. elephant

OMG!!! I love the star wars cake! Endor, Hoth, Tatooine, CHEWY!

I was about to translate the binary cake, but I couldn't figure out where the numbers started. Aren't I sad?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSammy

XKCD for the win!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeatherdykeuk

"Lego" Zelda is actually 8-bit Zelda. Its meant to have the blocky look of old style video games.

Thanks for all the great geeky cakes!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNalyd

...isn't that the Death Star?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Isn't the steampunk cake referencing the new Alice in Wonderland movie? no? not a movie buff but something twinged my netdar when I saw it.

I LOLLED when I scrolled to the XKCD cake, a shock to see! I thot I was the only one who knew about it (haha).
Thanks for the Sunday giggles!

WV: paref, as in, 'I'll take a paref those xkcd cakes, thx.'

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdnana

The cake with the math and hearts comes from the online webcomic XKCD. Here's the one it's from:

http://xkcd.com/55/

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPamela

Well done, john, well done. You explained everything in a way that those of us who don't know Godzilla from Alf can understand. (I never heard of steampunk until I read it on CW.) Yes, I do know Pacman. And "Star Wars", but only episodes 4-6 due to a major crush on Harrison Ford. I fail at geek.

I must give kudos to the decorator who did the binary cake -- perfectly spaced and painstakenly perfect. Bravo!! (Probably translates to "Why did I agree to do this job?")

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

The PacMan cake is from my friend's wedding! I have many pictures of it!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdrienne

I doubt anyone would understand just how much I NEED that XKCD cake... ahh geek love

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRicebubbles

I was hoping that the binary cake said "love" over and over, but I don't think it does. (Mine and my husband's wedding rings are engraved with :love" in binary.)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Wow! Great to see these creative expressions of love! I hope these couples live long and prosper.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

I want that XKCD cake!!!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

These cakes make me want to get married again, with less pressure to have all the princess-y thingie blingies.

And John, you have successfully upgraded to the next level of geekdom.

But, ahem, *adjusting nerd glasses*, isn't he spelled Chewie with ie?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterViiriäinen

"I also guarantee that when Jen and I get married again (to each other, I mean), our wedding cake will be something like this."

Huh? What? You're not married any more? When did this happen?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

The kxcd cake is sooo great, and i love that it is a bakery 20 min from my home!!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertish

The zelda cake is actually done is 8bit style...wow now who's waving their geek flag! ;)

The Steampunk cake is gorgeous.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Yes, that's the Death Star...glad someone else noticed that. ;) Suz (aka LitBuff)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLitBuff

What scrumptious geekiness! My faves are the the Steampunk (my hubby and I saw The Time Machine together and that would be the perfect anniversary cake) and the DC cake.

Bottom tier of the DC cake features the Hall of Justice.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa H.

AHHHH! That PacMan cake is AMAZING!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKolchak Puggle

@ Gary - No, no, we're still married. John just meant when we have a vow renewal/second wedding. See, our wedding was painfully boring, so we often talk about having a do-over. :)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJen

I see that a couple of people said this already, but I think it's hilarious that another war over a round metal shiplike objects may be starting on your blog, so I wanted to chime in to say that that is neither epcot nor spaceship earth, but the death star. Or were you kidding?

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

Transformers Godzilla would be Mechagodzilla. My mother has probably watched every Godzilla movie there is, and therefore I have as well.

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Mmm, cakey geeky goodness! I LOVED the portal and steampunk cakes- two of my current obsessions :)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

John, I do enjoy when you "guest host", but I think you lost a few "geek points" in your knowledge today. You've never seen Godzilla movies?? Jen, you need to take care of that. Also the Futurama deficit. (I don't consider it a favorite show, but it can be amusing).
And John, it is definitely time for you start reading XKCD comics!

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLynnE65

sooo much awesome

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJennySRP

Ah Spaceship Earth. My favorite ride at Epcot. ;)

June 26, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter~*Jess*~

I'm not any kind of "geek" but I LOVE the PacMan/Ms.PacMan cake!!!
I played it a lot in the early 80s when there seemed to be a machine almost everywhere. I got to be very good at it, and it was fun to surprise any teenager waiting to play, as I know they figured that I'd only be playing for a minute or so. Even my kids were impressed! I was especially good at Ms. PacMan and still play it whenever I (rarely) find a machine. (I won't say how old I am, but was in my thirties when I first started to play. I can still play a pretty good game!)
