What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Cannonball!!

There's been a lot of speculation over the exact course of that errant Mythbusters cannonball that went flying through a suburban neighborhood this week.

Yes, gone are the days when cannonballs will fly in dependable straight lines and plop down with nice dependable kabloomies. These days they use the front door, ricochet through bedrooms, bounce up hills, careen through streets in a drunken fit, and generally behave almost exactly the way cannonballs don't.

Fortunately, we can trace the trail of wreckage and piece together exactly what happened. So let's follow along, shall we?

4:14 PM: The cannonball "myth" fires.

(BWAHAHAHAA!!)

(Sorry.)

From there, it bounded over barriers, sailed through suburbia, and ricocheted off the top tier of the Kyle-Deckard wedding cake:

Followed by a quick bounce off the Maitland anniversary cake:

...a quick hopscotch through a local pound cake display...

...and a sliding skid through a nearby birthday party.

Next it executed a tight right turn, picking up speed while narrowly missing these two characters:

Nice reflexes, guys.

Then things REALLY got interesting.

The shockwave from the ball's* passage knocked 3 out of 4 turkey's heads CLEAN OFF.

*"Ball's". Heh. Aheh. Heh.

...AND blasted the cake right out from under a Mr. Louis E. Tully's frosting:

"And that wasn't fondant, man," stated Mr. Tully at a press conference later. "it was buttercream. Anyone wanna take my picture?"

Next, according to a sheriff's spokesperson I am totally not making up, "the cannonball took a few unfortunate bounces."

After which it bowled through an innocent tray of cupcakes...

...repeatedly pummeled a defenseless ice cream cake...

... and, apparently just for spite, rolled behind the counter and scrawled grammatically incorrect insults on all the waiting orders.

This was one nasty cannonball, guys.

Finally, after literally bringing down the house...

"Oh, oh, oh!"

...the cannonball came to rest in little Arthur Dent's birthday cake:

Where it was iced over and sold by the pound.

THE END.

Thanks to Katie M., Jessy A., A.S., Bre D., Alexis G., Michelle M., Joel F., Kevin P., Jennifer E., Monique R., Lisa B., Beth J., & my all-time favorite cannonball wranglers, the Mythbusters gang.

And now...

BONUS FUN CAKE OF AWESOMENESS!

Wow that was amazing! What a story and great pictures to illustrate the cannonball's "journey". :)

I LOVE MYTHBUSTERS!!!!!!!!! But in all seiriousness, Adam, Jamie,, That was one experiment that went majorly wrong.... You rock, Jen! And John too, I suppose..... = )

Lost it at the insult cake. Wow.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMelody

Love Mythbusters! So much that I might not even mind very much if my house got hit by a stray cannonball...what a great story!! (Though the people in the house that got hit, might feel differently...)

One of your best posts ever!

The cannon ball was feeling a bit more civil when it raged through my east coast neighborhood. It politely knocked on my door, then when I answered, it careened in, dirtied up the bath, jumbled up the living room, and left a pile of dirty clothes in the hamper. I'm glad we survived! (wink wink) I'll have to take the whole weekend off at a posh spa to recover! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

This was an awesome post of awesomeness.

And, I blame the explosion expert, not Adam, Jamie, and/or the build team.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMimiheart

Dangit, not even 10am (East Coast) and already the video's down. :(

Awesome post, though!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

That didn't all really happen that way, did it?

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSunshine Mary

I'd say this account sounds pretty canon.

Now,*there's* your problem...

Mythbusters, Ghostbusters and Hitchhikers. Oh My!

I believe the myth was "It's impossible to integrate a wildly popular, often explosive science entertainment TV show into a wildly popular blog about cakes."

BUSTED! (But it does prove failure is always an option... As is insurance.)

The Grandma one made me seriously laugh out loud...at my desk...and people are staring :)

How many roads must a man walk down,
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove fly,
Before she sleeps in the sand?
And how many times must the cannon balls fly,
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind,
The answer is blowing in the wind.

I like the subtle Monty Python reference, too.

What a bonus to get a current events Cake Wrecks post. Love it!

Hysterical post XD XD I love mythbusters, and I really hope this makes them review their safety. That last cake made me laugh out loud XD

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

If that canon ball had any respect it would have taken out a cup cake cake or two! Those deserve a pounding.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSun

This made me laugh SO HARD.

The tiny censor bar was a nice touch. And I'm trying to remember what scene from the Hitchhiker trilogy you're referencing there at the end, but I'm stumped.

Thank you for the faith restoration. It's been some time since I've seen or heard the word "literally" used correctly.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarol

Jen...you KILL me! I love it. I'm going to have to read this at home later, where I can laugh hysterically without looking like a loon...

My current favourite meme is Joseph Ducreux....I'd love to see what you could do with that! hint, hint... :)

The fondant Jamie figure reminds me of someone.... Not sure who though....

Those cake were hilarious! Even though I hardly ever laugh (Due to I view these on my iPod as soon as I wake up. And as you know people have no sense of humor in the mornings....)

I know if I looked at these after lunch I'd be all over the floor :D

Love you guys! keep up the good work!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeighAnne

Best post of the year so far (it IS December, though). I am still laughing (out loud and hard enough to wake the dog...)

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCathy

ROTFL!! Great narration! And great wrecks! One of my sisters lives just 1/2 block from where the cannonball careened around the neighborhood.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMaureen

Ah Jen, you are the most brilliant writer ever!! I really hope Jamie and Adam see this post because it is AMAZING!!!!!!! Definitely one of my new favorite posts :)

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMadTigerKitty

I have met the Mythbusters because they are always in SF staging their show..nice guys.

The family got a new van out of it and no one was hurt so alls well that ends well.

These baked goods..not so much.

Awesome bonus cake!!

As they* say, "It's all fun and games until someone loses a cannonball."

*By "they", I mean "me".

It's really hard to write a comment while I'm on the floor BOWING TO YOUR AWESOMENESS!!

And then you sock me with a bonus Fun Cake of Awesomeness....now I'm on the floor crying tears of sheer joy. I hope you're happy!!

I love a good hitchhiker reference. And this little incidence was just bizarre enough to be in a Douglas Adams book.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJoanna

Awesome! My co-workers wheeled over to see why I was laughing so hard.

What in the world was in the top tier of the Kyle-Deckard cake (#1)? It looks like just whipped cream & oreos - doesn't appear to be cake.

And the birthday party? WTH? Someone really hated the sight of white frosting and had to cover every inch of that with random primary colors and flotsam. *shudder*

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPamtha

Oops... I must not know my mythbusters because I said Jamie when I meant Adam... I think... I was talking about the red head if that helps!

Well all in all Tori's won the place as my favorite! GIRLS RULE ;)

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLeighAnne

Arthur Dent wasn't turning 42 by any chance? If so I'd better grab my towel!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEd

My husband insists that if it had been our house, he'd want that part of the wall signed and framed. I think being a little freaked out about a cannonball hitting your house is pretty reasonable, though.

On the other hand, if the cannonball is indeed capable of such insults, I don't think it would be welcome in my house.

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Well there's your problem!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChris S.

Heh. Arthur Dent. Iced over. Pound. Heh. But I'm not sure how I caught that and missed a MP reference. Oh well - it's just an excuse to read it all over again!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie H.

this post induced more happiness and joy than a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster being consumed by a (really nasty) class-5 free roaming vapor and a naked Mohawk baby carrot jockey!!

you show off to your best advantage as a weaver of tales!

At Vixx and Sharyn: Hee!

I LOVE Mythbusters! Ahem.

There must have been some sort of chemical reaction in the anniversary cake because it is completely liquified.

That's not pound cake. That's what you'd find growing on a slice of cheese left in a car for a week. Uh, so I hear...

Wow. That cake looks just like my son's white t-shirt after it was put in the dryer...with a box of crayons.

I think they mean "round" ice cream cake. I was so busy trying to figure out those "balloons" on top, I didn't even notice the dents in the cake at first. Maybe that was the idea?

The gingerbread house was part of Santa's safety video on improper landing techniques.

Hey Jen (And John the hubby of Jen)!

This is my first post and I just wanted to tell you how much I love Cake Wrecks! You're really making my days a slice *giggling* sweeter!

Thank you so much for your daily extra dose of hilariously awesome awesomeness! (And the confused faces of the people trying to learn next to Cassie (My Mac) and me at the library! ^.^)

Canonball-y greetings,

Laura Dawn

Politically and grammatically incorrect in the same cake! Bonus!

You are as current as Southpark! How did you hop on a story only two days old? :)

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdrumnate

Pretty much the only thing I regret about moving out of Alameda County is that I'm too far from the excitement whenever a Mythbusters experiment goes awry.

The post is even funnier if you read the whole thing in Robert Lee's voice (although it's already very funny without that).

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi

You are an amazing person! I love how you are able to take a current event and make it apply to cakes. Thank you for sharing your briliant talent!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSherron

This needs to be a children's book!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered Commentergigi

Kabloomies? (Nice use of pictures though, to illustrate your story. The "Maitland anniversary cake" made me think of "Primeval". Does anybody but me watch that? No? Okay. Guess I'm just too geeky...)

That entire post is awesome, That's not fondant, it's buttercream - hahahahaha you rock Jen!

December 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTheMissingSock

Cakewrecks and Mythbusters in one post? The only way that could have been better would if I had a cake in front of me !

Brilliant job weaving a story explaining all those bashed cakes. I would have thought that sequence improbable if I hadn't seen the video.

I do have to wonder: Did Tully later use his stand-up icing as a toupee-- it's shaped almost right

Vixx, I'm using that in the future :) And well said, Sharyn.

"Am I missing an eyebrow?" CLASSIC! Oh, how I love Mythbusters. And Cakewrecks. LOL
