What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Painted Cakes

Don't worry, everyone; you came to the right place. You may have stopped short when you saw this cake:

By Nevie-Pie Cakes

...and wondered if you had accidentally surfed over to CakeShapedItemsWrappedinFancyWallpaper.com, but nope, this is Sunday Sweets, and that's a real, hand-painted cake!

Cake-painting is just like regular ol' painting, except the artist must work extra quickly when using food-grade paints, and must also be ok with the fact that his or her masterpiece will surely be sliced up and devoured by the end of the night.

Sumitted by Debbie C. and made by Sweet and Saucy Shop

"Noooooo!"

Most painted cakes don't rely on 3D fondant sculpting, so they get their visual impact from lots of detail and bold colors:

Sub'd by Kelly C. and made by Maggie Austin Cake

But here's a double dose of awesome: both fondant figurines and some amazing cake-painting inspired by the nostalgic children's illustrations of Lucie Attwell. (yup, Googled that).

Sub'd by Natasha and made by Nevie-Pie Cakes

So sweet I'm getting cavities just looking at it!

This painted-on barnyard scene adds a solid dose of whimsy to an already whimsical cake.

By Maggie Cakes

By Maggie Cakes It's dripping in whimsy! It's whimsy overload all up in heah! (That's how the cool kids say it. I'm not cool).

I love the simplicity of this cake, the designs look like super high-class doodles!

By The Cake Company

Did I ever tell you that my nickname in college was "The Doodler?" Maybe I'm cooler than I thought...

And if you just can't get enough animal imagery on cakes, you're going to go wild for this one:

Sub'd by Amber M. and made by Rising Flours

Out of Africa and into my heart! (And belly!) It's absolutely stunning. Baby giraffes, zebra print and cake may very well be all I need to get by in life.

But what's a post about painted cakes without an actual painting on a cake?

By CakeDiva73

Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh-on-with-your-bad-self!

However, if you asked me what the most unlikely painting to be reproduced in cake form would be, due to its abstract nature, abundance of miniature shapes and swirls, and a use of colors you simply aren't going to find in the cake decorating aisle, I would confidently reply: The Kiss, by Gustav Klimt.

(Actually I would just stare at you for a long time and slowly, unblinkingly, back away.)

Sub'd by Mary K. and made by Sweet Ladies Bakery

But what do you know? Here it is. Truly a work of art!

The impressionist style is a natural fit for painting with frosting. I think Monet would approve, and probably glumly wonder why he didn't think of it first.

Sub'd Emily L. and made by Megpie

Now you can have your art and eat it too! Yum-azing.

That's all for today, have a great rest-of-your-weekend!

Sunday's always amaze me and for once I look forward to the end of the weekend just to see what masterpieces there are here.

OOOhhh how pretty :D Love the starry night cake, one of my favorite paintings. Love the Monet cake also :D and the kids cake is so cute

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermindy1

Good lord that African cake is the most exquisite cake I have ever seen! These are just stunning Jen.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNewb

Just amazing, I couldn't even do that on paper.

Okay. Every Sunday after viewing Sunday Sweets I think to myself "I don't think cakes can get more beautiful than that." Hello Sundays Sweets for today. This may be the last time I can say that. Or maybe not, knowing Jen. (Not personally, just as a Cake Wrecks fan. :) )

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRachel from Maine

Well, my toddler now wants to have that "Starry Night" cake for her next party, so thank you, Cake Wrecks! At least she has good taste; she never asks to have any of the wrecks recreated!

So how does one go about learning how to paint on cakes? Can you do it if you know how to paint? What about if you're really good with colored pencils? Inquiring minds want to know!

Personally, my favorite is the first cake with the roses (very Victorian), but the Klimt cake literally caused my jaw to drop!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterIkwig

Beautiful, every one!

The African cake and the Klimt are my favorites if I have to choose. (Luckily, I really don't have to!)

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJanna

Wow, these are great. Where'd I put my paintbrush?

The Serengeti-themed cake is the one that gets my attention the most. I'm not sure I'd want to eat it, though.

I'm also impressed by the taste of the people who did the Klimt cake. Was that for a wedding?

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGary

Oh my goodness, these cakes are just amazing and beautiful! I can't imagine how long it took for bakers to design these cakes. If one of these cakes were made by me, I would cry if someone cut a teeny slice.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon Hunter

The Klimt is one of my very favorite paintings, I have a print hanging right above me. Amazing on a cake!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

Usually I am tearing up from laughing so hard but today that Kimt "The Kiss" cake got to me. It really captured the passion of the original. What an AWESOME cake to celebrate a wedding or anniversary with. Just wow!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterms. anthrope

Stunning! I would not want to cut this up!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentertiny p elephant

*GASP*
"Starry Night" cake....!?!?!
I'd cut off an EAR for that thing! (Groan!)
Too, TOO nice to cut into. I'd probably peel it all off and frame it under Saran wrap.
The first one is super-darling, but it brings me to mind of the chair cushions that were on a porch glider at a family friend of my parents,' years and years ago. They smelled like mothballs (the cushions, not the friends).
The little children one's topper is reminiscent of Hummel (sp?) dolls, to me.
The second one down is my favorite~ it is so delicate and simple ; there's an Oriental touch there...lovely, lovely, lovely.

Oooooh pretty, possibly the best Sunday Sweets ever, loving all the Daisy's!!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDiddleymaz

Now I know we watch too much Doctor Who, when my seven-year-old thinks the Van Gogh cake is a Doctor Who cake.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGretchen

i think this may be one of my favorite sunday sweets yet. the hand-painting is AMAZING.... honestly, i can't comment on just one b/c then i will comment on them all, they are all that good! (ok, but the children's cake (lucie atwell one) is adorable and the farm-theme is super cute.) thanks as always....

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermickeyp415

Seriously stunning work.... these bakers are true artists!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterlisa

I always wait to read this blog until Sunday because of the absolute beauty of the Sweets. It makes seeing the wrecks a little less painful.

By the way, I wish you were making another calendar this year. I've had it up all year at work and it's turned a lot of coworkers onto your blog. I have people drop by once a week just to see the new wrecks.

WOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW.

I want the Van Gogh one!!!! That is my FAVORITE painting! I'm doing my entire wedding themed on that painting. After, you know, I meet a guy and manage to convince him to marry me, that is. :)

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterShannon

Wouldn't a more obvious topper for Bentley's 1 happy birthday be a fancy car? Of course, that might be a tad out of place on the farm -- anywhere outside of Green Acres, anyway.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I'm speechless with AMAZEMENT!!!! How is that possible? How talented ARE these people? My brain exploded again ( just when I had put it back together) but this time with sheer AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!! Also, who is Lindsey? Can I write articles, too????? :•)

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterG

OOPsie~ I meant to write "Hummel figurines," not "dolls." Not likely that the little crumb-snatchers would be playing with high-end, fine porcelain collectibles (shudder)!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter~anamorous~

Sure that last one is a CAKE?
I dreamed that Monet made lovely hooked rugs in his spare time.
And this is about the worsted joke I've ever made.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter~anamorous~

Oh my gosh. Such amazing cakes. I didn't think you could cake paint. The Serengeti cake was out of Africa (no pun intended). I have been lurking here for many years and many more to come. Thank you.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTerri

All these cakes are impossibly beautiful. So impossible, I would love to see the results when someone, a bride perhaps, takes a picture of one of them to her local supermarket bakery and asks for a replica.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKay

Why is the little boy on top of the 4th cake grabbing the little girl's boobies? Any why didn't you notice? O.o

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah R.

Unbelievable. I'm with Ms. Anthrope too - The Kiss is one of my favorites and that just made me cry. But these are all amazing - the black and white one would be my other favorite.

Too much awesome for one page.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMissy

I cannot BELIEVE I just said out loud
" these are incredible! I would not want my cake wrecked if I painted these!"
of course, then I snorted and had to comment at the ridiculousness and unintentional symmetry that came out of my mouth.
To my laptop.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKathy/Cookiedough

Wow! The Klimt cake is AMAZING!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKathleen

As an artist, this just might be my favorite Sunday Sweets ever!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrista

Congratulations Jen on having your book featured on ew.com!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGigi

Such patience and humility these people must have, to create something so beautiful and fleeting! I would want to preserve that African one somehow and keep it!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLinda

Woah. I was all impressed by the first cake, then they got progressively even MORE impressive. The last three are mind-blowing!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjune7

Wow, that fourth one with the kids kind of looks like he's fondling her.... And, by his face, he seems very excited about it.

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJessica

These are some of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen! I wish i had that kind of talent. (Although the black and white one doesn't seem to be painted, but rather piped. Look at the sides and you can see the raised dots.) But still, gorgeous! Love it, love it, love it!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCookyanimal

These cakes are stunning!
It is amazing how small the second cake is when you look at the cookies in the tray below it....wow....

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVictoria

I always look forward to Sunday Sweets, and this week definitely did not disappoint. Those are all amazing and beautiful!!!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTerraD

LOVE Klimt!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRuby

Lindsey I love your Sunday Sweets!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

The Kiss cake is the most awesome thing I've ever seen. That is my favorite painting and put on a cake...well that makes it doubly good! The Black & White "Doodles" cake is a cool design, but I'm sorry they look like toilet paper rolls to me. Another amazing round of Sunday Sweets!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commentersan

Impressionist frosting painting!

Squuueeeee!!

December 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterErica

Those are absolutely amazing and beautiful. I love the recreations of original paintings, but the African one is too beautiful to eat.

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTara

Beautiful! Such a shame to eat them though! Bet they cost a hell of a lot more hand painted. Maybe I'll give up with canvas and start on cakes!

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJess

Those are BEYOND BEAUTIFUL and I SWEAR I am going to try doing that at some point in the future.

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

Damage,,,,,, Holy Cheetos....., My Gosh.........., Fudge......... WOW!!!!!!!!! those are absolutely *blankin'* amazing! (kinda left me gibbering like the idiot I am..............)

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmber A.

i came to this awesome post and i was so disappointed..

because it had to come to an end eventually .. these are all a pleasure and i'd never want to slice them

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKraken

I'm pretty sure that that whimsical farm cake is based on the fisher-price farm board book, those animals look lust like the pictures from my 2 year old's book. Even the postures of the rooster and pig are the same. My son would love that cake:-)

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Wow!!! Love the Sunday comments! You make me smile! Beautiful cakes!

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTonya

Fantastic. I have to say, I look forward to the Sweets. It's always nice to be reminded that there are people out there who do really really cool, beautiful things.

December 5, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGreg

WOW! I love love love the African cake! That is just gorgeous! The Starry Night one is also gorgeous! Such talent!
