Sunday Sweets: Painted Cakes
December 4, 2011 Don't worry, everyone; you came to the right place. You may have stopped short when you saw this cake:
...and wondered if you had accidentally surfed over to CakeShapedItemsWrappedinFancyWallpaper.com, but nope, this is Sunday Sweets, and that's a real, hand-painted cake!
Cake-painting is just like regular ol' painting, except the artist must work extra quickly when using food-grade paints, and must also be ok with the fact that his or her masterpiece will surely be sliced up and devoured by the end of the night.

Most painted cakes don't rely on 3D fondant sculpting, so they get their visual impact from lots of detail and bold colors:

I love the simplicity of this cake, the designs look like super high-class doodles!
Did I ever tell you that my nickname in college was "The Doodler?" Maybe I'm cooler than I thought...

Out of Africa and into my heart! (And belly!) It's absolutely stunning. Baby giraffes, zebra print and cake may very well be all I need to get by in life.

Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh-on-with-your-bad-self!
However, if you asked me what the most unlikely painting to be reproduced in cake form would be, due to its abstract nature, abundance of miniature shapes and swirls, and a use of colors you simply aren't going to find in the cake decorating aisle, I would confidently reply: The Kiss, by Gustav Klimt.
(Actually I would just stare at you for a long time and slowly, unblinkingly, back away.)

But what do you know? Here it is. Truly a work of art!
The impressionist style is a natural fit for painting with frosting. I think Monet would approve, and probably glumly wonder why he didn't think of it first.

Okay. Every Sunday after viewing Sunday Sweets I think to myself "I don't think cakes can get more beautiful than that." Hello Sundays Sweets for today. This may be the last time I can say that. Or maybe not, knowing Jen. (Not personally, just as a Cake Wrecks fan. :) )
Well, my toddler now wants to have that "Starry Night" cake for her next party, so thank you, Cake Wrecks! At least she has good taste; she never asks to have any of the wrecks recreated!
So how does one go about learning how to paint on cakes? Can you do it if you know how to paint? What about if you're really good with colored pencils? Inquiring minds want to know!
Personally, my favorite is the first cake with the roses (very Victorian), but the Klimt cake literally caused my jaw to drop!

The Serengeti-themed cake is the one that gets my attention the most. I'm not sure I'd want to eat it, though.
I'm also impressed by the taste of the people who did the Klimt cake. Was that for a wedding?
Oh my goodness, these cakes are just amazing and beautiful! I can't imagine how long it took for bakers to design these cakes. If one of these cakes were made by me, I would cry if someone cut a teeny slice.
The Klimt is one of my very favorite paintings, I have a print hanging right above me. Amazing on a cake!
Usually I am tearing up from laughing so hard but today that Kimt "The Kiss" cake got to me. It really captured the passion of the original. What an AWESOME cake to celebrate a wedding or anniversary with. Just wow!

Too, TOO nice to cut into. I'd probably peel it all off and frame it under Saran wrap.
The first one is super-darling, but it brings me to mind of the chair cushions that were on a porch glider at a family friend of my parents,' years and years ago. They smelled like mothballs (the cushions, not the friends).
The little children one's topper is reminiscent of Hummel (sp?) dolls, to me.
The second one down is my favorite~ it is so delicate and simple ; there's an Oriental touch there...lovely, lovely, lovely.

Now I know we watch too much Doctor Who, when my seven-year-old thinks the Van Gogh cake is a Doctor Who cake.
i think this may be one of my favorite sunday sweets yet. the hand-painting is AMAZING.... honestly, i can't comment on just one b/c then i will comment on them all, they are all that good! (ok, but the children's cake (lucie atwell one) is adorable and the farm-theme is super cute.) thanks as always....

I always wait to read this blog until Sunday because of the absolute beauty of the Sweets. It makes seeing the wrecks a little less painful.
By the way, I wish you were making another calendar this year. I've had it up all year at work and it's turned a lot of coworkers onto your blog. I have people drop by once a week just to see the new wrecks.

I want the Van Gogh one!!!! That is my FAVORITE painting! I'm doing my entire wedding themed on that painting. After, you know, I meet a guy and manage to convince him to marry me, that is. :)
Wouldn't a more obvious topper for Bentley's 1 happy birthday be a fancy car? Of course, that might be a tad out of place on the farm -- anywhere outside of Green Acres, anyway.

Oh my gosh. Such amazing cakes. I didn't think you could cake paint. The Serengeti cake was out of Africa (no pun intended). I have been lurking here for many years and many more to come. Thank you.
All these cakes are impossibly beautiful. So impossible, I would love to see the results when someone, a bride perhaps, takes a picture of one of them to her local supermarket bakery and asks for a replica.

Unbelievable. I'm with Ms. Anthrope too - The Kiss is one of my favorites and that just made me cry. But these are all amazing - the black and white one would be my other favorite.

Woah. I was all impressed by the first cake, then they got progressively even MORE impressive. The last three are mind-blowing!
Wow, that fourth one with the kids kind of looks like he's fondling her.... And, by his face, he seems very excited about it.
These are some of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen! I wish i had that kind of talent. (Although the black and white one doesn't seem to be painted, but rather piped. Look at the sides and you can see the raised dots.) But still, gorgeous! Love it, love it, love it!

The Kiss cake is the most awesome thing I've ever seen. That is my favorite painting and put on a cake...well that makes it doubly good! The Black & White "Doodles" cake is a cool design, but I'm sorry they look like toilet paper rolls to me. Another amazing round of Sunday Sweets!

Those are absolutely amazing and beautiful. I love the recreations of original paintings, but the African one is too beautiful to eat.
Beautiful! Such a shame to eat them though! Bet they cost a hell of a lot more hand painted. Maybe I'll give up with canvas and start on cakes!

I'm pretty sure that that whimsical farm cake is based on the fisher-price farm board book, those animals look lust like the pictures from my 2 year old's book. Even the postures of the rooster and pig are the same. My son would love that cake:-)
