What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

You Say Hello, And I Say Goodbye

The arrival of a new baby is usually a time of joy and celebration.

Er...usually.

"Well, the stork was busy, so we figured we'd just chuck the lil' tyke out around 30,000 feet. Why? Is that a problem?"

You know, people are always talking about the sweet little toes and fingers and stuff, but you want to know the CUTEST part?

"Jus' wookit dat widdle ootsey wootsey skulley wulley!"

"Hey, anyone else think Julie's looking a little tense today?"

"It's all downhill from here, kid.

"MWUAH-HA-HA-HAAA!!"

Ahem.

"We call this one the 'Tub of Love:'"

"What do you mean, you're not supposed to put babies in full bathtubs?

"Ok, ok, FINE."

[splashing]

[thump]

"Better?"

Thanks to Elizabeth S., Marisa T., Anne J., Emily L., & Jilissa K. for throwing up the baby with the bath water.

Oh, throw OUT?

Um... sure, ok, thanks for that, too.

With all the cotton balls on the last cake, it's a shame the baby didn't land on a one of them. Might've softened the landing. I also enjoy how the duck is guiltily avoiding eye contact.

Yes, Yes, Yes, the fourth one looks like a coffin!!!
We've established that, now on to more important things..
Where can I get a copy of that WKRP episode. I need to see it asap.

That was perfect, BADKarma! A perfectly timed, pre-thanksgiving WKRP reference!

The tub looks like a coffin!

OK, the hula one, as all women who have had babies should remember, you still look preggo right after you birth the child down the waterfall and baby skulls don't have teeth either (or at least ones that have already erupted) , so that skull is definitely not a baby skull.

I agree with one other posters who made a previous comment.

The first cake might be to celebrate an adoption - my son was first placed into my arms in the airport in Toronto after he'd flown 20 hours from Korea when he was 7 months old (he's now 7 years old and absolutely incredible!).

As always - your posts make me smile, shake my head in wonderment and sometimes even gasp in shock or tremble in fear. Keep up the amazing work!

(and did you guys ever get to try a Beaver Tail when you were in Ottawa??)

Cake 2: Didn't ya get the memo? Hello Kitty ribbons make anything cute. :P

the airplane and baby is sooo cute... especially if a parent or parents are in the industry.....

That Tub of Love looks like a baby casket. What were they thinking?
The last one would be cute if it weren't for the baby on the cold tile floor. That is just bizarre!

November 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarnieB

frilly coffin--totally agree.

The last one? Totally looks like the poor kid slipped out of the bathtub and onto the floor, which begs the questions where is his fondant mom or dad because as we all know, you don't leave the baby alone in the bathtub...sheesh.

November 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLetitia

Ya know, that last one would be MUCH cuter if they had the baby in a playful pose.

As it stands, it's just.... WRONG.

“thump” muahahahahahahahaha

#3 looks like a Simpson’s rejected character and #4 looks more like a casket than a bathtub- did anyone else see that? (evil smile)

BADKarma- WKRP? You win!!

~anamorous~ do me a favor and don’t ever switch to decaf! ; )

The third cake looks like the Hawaiian version of Moses, when Moses' mother put him in the river in a basket.

Scary, but the first one is kinda perfect for my baby shower next week! I'm having my first son, after 2 girls, and my hubby is into planes like crazy! Haha, thanks for the idea! :P

I'm wondering if the bathroom floor cake is for a mother who's planning on delivering in water. It doesn't explain the rubber ducky or why the baby is on the floor, though.

I'm with everyone who says the other "bathtub"/bassinet looks like a coffin. Ick.

Wow. That skull cake was kinda cute. But that bath tub cake woah. What was the wreckerator going for? Well these cakes could have been worse. The bathtub one however I would avoid it looks pretty much like nearly everyone says. A coffin.

I'm probably the only one for whom the first cake made total sense. We adopted our kids from overseas and flew in with them . . . with better seating arrangements.

I can't believe I missed the Beatles reference in the title the first two times I read the post! It's tough getting old... :D

November 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMuria

That first one....the Mile High Club had unintended results.

November 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKathryn

OMG. The hula one. So much psychosis in one cake.

I have to say, though, that lining the cake sides with those piroulline rolled cookies is actually really good idea. It's hard to frost the cake sides and make them look all nice.

I, too, think the first one is an adoption cake. We're an adoptive family and it took me a minute to figure out what was "wrong" since we have seen that image a lot. My DS even has a story book about a stork who turns into a plane to deliver babies far away.

November 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

So I thought that the adoption explanation for the first cake was a good one until I looked back at the cake - the baby's blonde. Either the baker added details without consulting the purchaser, or it's not a cake celebrating an overseas adoption (at least not one from China or Korea, the most common places.)

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who saw the lacy bassinet as more coffin-like. Plus, I also snorted at the "thump"! Nice to know there's not something wrong with me...or at the very least, I'm in good company!

November 19, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkaisee

I think Lestat made the 'bathtub/bassinet' cake.

"It's a coffin! A coffin! Let me out, I'm not dead!"

"It's your coffin, enjoy it. Most of us never get to know what it feels like."

November 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGrace

I actually love the second cake. Not a fan of the baby name choice, but if I were to have a baby, I would SO want that as my shower cake!

November 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLee

I just saw the cutesy skull logo (cake #2) in the toy dept. It's from a series of dolls called "Monster High" Think Bratz + classic movie monsters...
