A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.
Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

What, exactly, is this cake supposed to be celebrating? Congratulations on getting your house sprayed for pests?
Wait, is that a real lizard...
Pllleeeaaassseeee tell me that's a garnish masterfully constructed of pickles and okra, or you may have finally found a way to make me swear off cake (or possibly Florida) forever.
We lived in Florida when I was little, and we were constantly getting chameleons in the car. My Mom and I were always skeeved out by them, and it didn't help that my dad and brother would sing "We're off to see the Lizard!" every time we went anywhere.
Oh. My. God.
Ewwww!
He's pinin' for the fjords!
"Heeere Leezard, Leezard, Leezard!" The BEST Taco Bell commercial EVER!!!!!
O_O wait..... WHAT?
Given what I know about Florida, it's horribly possible that it's a real lizard. I can't imagine they'd miss it when they were putting the cakes out, though.
My boys would probably love a cake with a lizard on it.
How the heck did the baker not notice there's a real live lizard on the cake? Did they not notice? Did they think it was plastic? And if so, why would you put a plastic lizard on a red velvet cake? The world no longer makes sense...
That's a real lizard. I assume (hope) the little fella is ON TOP OF the cake cover... O_o
Is it inside or outside the plastic lid?
Um...don't matter if it's in the cake, on top of the cake, or on top of the LID...still EWWWWWW! And IF that's icing or flotsam, I suppose it's a good replica. Gross, but well done.
O.o
My guess is the gecko was merely picking up a cake to take to the GEICO office. He's always polite like that....
But if it's a plastic one, then why does it only have a stump of a tail 'cos lizards lose their tails when they are threatened, which means it may well be a real lizard...on a CAKE....and I'm really scared of lizards, they give me the heeby-jeebies, and it's on a CAKE....argh....
I think it's inside the plastic cover: His little toes have frosting on them.
I am ashamed to say I looked at this with a magnifying glass.
I'm also ashamed that it's not the first time I've examined a wreck with a magnifying glass.
I think I need a new hobby...
It's a real lizard, and it's underneath the plastic cover. Looks like the Whizzo Chocolate Company finally got into the cake business.
There's no shadow on the cake, and the lid is pretty high. That little guy's not on top of the lid. O.O
Eeeewwwwww!!!!!
and ...... LOL!!!!
My sister lives in Tampa, FL. She's always saying we need to come down and stay with her (I live in Illinois). But then she goes on and on and on about the lizards & bugs. I know that we've pests up here too, but my goodness... Lizards!?! No thank you... especially on my cake. :P
D: How did it get IN there?????
I'm glad it's NOT a chameleon (or if it is, it's not blending in.) Can you imagine? Slice. "Mommy, why is the cake bleeding?"
Ok. I know there are tons of anoles running around here in Florida and I know they manage to get everywhere. I've rescued a few from my cats after they slipped into the house. I can see them accidentally sneaking into a store, but really. How do you not notice the lizard on the cake? Really?
Poor 'lil lizard - death by chocolate ....
If just one person's
pancreas is spared sugar rush,
I've not died in vain.
I don't think that's a living lizard...I think it's real, but I'm thinking it's run down its mortal coil. Now if it had just gone to join the choir invisible, we wouldn't have to see what cannot be unseen.
If you hadn't put him in the icing he'd be pushing up the daisies. (Thank you for being amazing, just saying.)
Awwwww, he's cute! I would definitely not want to eat a bite of that cake, but... he's cute!
This cake was made for Little Orphan Annie......
@SuBee: hello. my name is mel. i looked at this and have looked at other wrecks with a magnifying glass....
Dear God - someone remind me to NEVER buy a cake from a Florida bakery. EEEEEWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Baked? Or raw?
He could just be hibernating. I know that a lot of lizards go into super-slow-metabolism mode when they get chilled. Either that, or I am trying to reassure myself that I am not looking at a super sweet adorable lizard that has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Also, a chameleon would not blend in with the cake. Chameleons actually change colors according to their mood, not as camouflage.
Oh. My. Gosh.
You just made a pregnant lady who is craving red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting NOT crave red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting.
I don't think that has ever been done before. There's GOT to be some kind of major award for that.
I'm never eating cake again.
Hope you're having fun on tour! :)
Looks like an AWESOME cake to wrecklicate on a cupcake for the Winter Underlined book tour! (Still laughing at the Death By Chocolate reference! That was my first thought, too.)
Having lived in Florida most of my life, I've never seen a lizard get into such a predicament. So far as I can tell from the photo, this is not an anole or a skink or even a chameleon..it appears to actually be a gecko, like they sell in pet stores. The "geckos" I'm used to are darn near transparent with beady black eyes, as far as Florida fauna is concerned.
I can assure you, good readers, that this would have been MUCH worse if it had been one of those translucent lizards..ugh.
OH god! I can't stop looking at it!
LOL Monty Python!!! LOL Wonder if he's nailed down to the cake.....
Airfare to Florida: $338
Red Velvet Cake: $14.95
Red Velvet Cake with a Gecko on it: .......Uh, priceless? Not in the good way, though.
Is that inside or outside the plastic? Either way--OMG!
It's not easy being green...
OMI - I live in Hawaii where we have both anole lizards (they change color) and geckos. Perhaps no one has wanted to mention the lizard (gecko?) has a messed up tail? That dark thing at the back end is not what that 'should' look like. They do drop it off if they are attacked by something bigger than them. I'm sure that bit of news will set up a new round of eeeeeeeewwwwwws. Ain't nature wonderful? LOL
OK, looks like I'm just weird...I knew that already, but apparently I didn't realize the depths of my oddness. My first thought was, "How CUTE!! SCORE! I would totally buy that cake! He's adorable!" Then, when someone mentioned he might have passed on, only then did I say to myself, "Ewww...".
Apparently, I don't have the same reactions to lizards you all do. I also adore frogs and I like spiders (just not on me). But I myself am strange and unusual.
Yo quiero chocolate cake!
My keyboard doesn't have an upside down exclamation point.
I've been in SoFla since '84 and that looks like a green anole. Looked up Fla lizards just to be sure, and yep, that reeeeely looks like an anole. Another reason to give up purchasing cakes and make your own.
How does the bakery clerk, or anyone else for that matter, NOT notice that? It does not look like gummy candy.
Ewwww. I don't mind lizards when they're not on cake or other foods, but on foods, Yuck.
Channeling Mr. Monk...Okay, here's what happened: the baker has those trays in stacks of lids and bases. The baker grabbed a bunch of bases, put all the cakes out, frosted them, then grabbed the stack of lids, which are normally stacked upside down. What they didn't notice was that there was an unconscious lizard inside the top lid, having dropped itself in there by mistake and being drunk after partying with the Aflac duck all night, had passed out. The baker quickly plopped the lids onto the bases and cakes and, being distracted due to watching Food Network cake shows on the bakery TV and daydreaming of a better future in culinary arts, failed to notice the lizard.
The lizard wakes up, realizes it's on a cake that might end up on CakeWrecks since it kind of looks like a vampire sneezed on it, and dies of shame.
I'm in ur cake eatin ur crums!
Oh, for corn's sake. It's just an itty-bitty little thing; why all the fuss?
It certainly can't eat too much of the cake--there'll be plenty left for everyone!
Now, If you're worried about there not being enough of the LIZARD to go around, just be a Sally Selfish, take it off and keep it for later.
Problem solved, yah?
Better on the cake than IN the cake.
I bet it's a plastic lizard.
Oh, dear Lord.... at first I thought it was crumpled snow pea pod. O_o...
Poor little thing didn't stand a chance...
I echo the question; how in the HECK do you miss a LIZARD ON A CAKE?!!
Still, I can't help but laugh at a lot of the comments.
