A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Pllleeeaaassseeee tell me that's a garnish masterfully constructed of pickles and okra, or you may have finally found a way to make me swear off cake (or possibly Florida) forever.
We lived in Florida when I was little, and we were constantly getting chameleons in the car. My Mom and I were always skeeved out by them, and it didn't help that my dad and brother would sing "We're off to see the Lizard!" every time we went anywhere.

Given what I know about Florida, it's horribly possible that it's a real lizard. I can't imagine they'd miss it when they were putting the cakes out, though.

How the heck did the baker not notice there's a real live lizard on the cake? Did they not notice? Did they think it was plastic? And if so, why would you put a plastic lizard on a red velvet cake? The world no longer makes sense...

My guess is the gecko was merely picking up a cake to take to the GEICO office. He's always polite like that....
But if it's a plastic one, then why does it only have a stump of a tail 'cos lizards lose their tails when they are threatened, which means it may well be a real lizard...on a CAKE....and I'm really scared of lizards, they give me the heeby-jeebies, and it's on a CAKE....argh....

It's a real lizard, and it's underneath the plastic cover. Looks like the Whizzo Chocolate Company finally got into the cake business.
There's no shadow on the cake, and the lid is pretty high. That little guy's not on top of the lid. O.O

My sister lives in Tampa, FL. She's always saying we need to come down and stay with her (I live in Illinois). But then she goes on and on and on about the lizards & bugs. I know that we've pests up here too, but my goodness... Lizards!?! No thank you... especially on my cake. :P

Ok. I know there are tons of anoles running around here in Florida and I know they manage to get everywhere. I've rescued a few from my cats after they slipped into the house. I can see them accidentally sneaking into a store, but really. How do you not notice the lizard on the cake? Really?

He could just be hibernating. I know that a lot of lizards go into super-slow-metabolism mode when they get chilled. Either that, or I am trying to reassure myself that I am not looking at a super sweet adorable lizard that has shuffled off this mortal coil.
Also, a chameleon would not blend in with the cake. Chameleons actually change colors according to their mood, not as camouflage.

Having lived in Florida most of my life, I've never seen a lizard get into such a predicament. So far as I can tell from the photo, this is not an anole or a skink or even a chameleon..it appears to actually be a gecko, like they sell in pet stores. The "geckos" I'm used to are darn near transparent with beady black eyes, as far as Florida fauna is concerned.
I can assure you, good readers, that this would have been MUCH worse if it had been one of those translucent lizards..ugh.

OMI - I live in Hawaii where we have both anole lizards (they change color) and geckos. Perhaps no one has wanted to mention the lizard (gecko?) has a messed up tail? That dark thing at the back end is not what that 'should' look like. They do drop it off if they are attacked by something bigger than them. I'm sure that bit of news will set up a new round of eeeeeeeewwwwwws. Ain't nature wonderful? LOL
OK, looks like I'm just weird...I knew that already, but apparently I didn't realize the depths of my oddness. My first thought was, "How CUTE!! SCORE! I would totally buy that cake! He's adorable!" Then, when someone mentioned he might have passed on, only then did I say to myself, "Ewww...".
Apparently, I don't have the same reactions to lizards you all do. I also adore frogs and I like spiders (just not on me). But I myself am strange and unusual.

I've been in SoFla since '84 and that looks like a green anole. Looked up Fla lizards just to be sure, and yep, that reeeeely looks like an anole. Another reason to give up purchasing cakes and make your own.
How does the bakery clerk, or anyone else for that matter, NOT notice that? It does not look like gummy candy.
Ewwww. I don't mind lizards when they're not on cake or other foods, but on foods, Yuck.
Channeling Mr. Monk...Okay, here's what happened: the baker has those trays in stacks of lids and bases. The baker grabbed a bunch of bases, put all the cakes out, frosted them, then grabbed the stack of lids, which are normally stacked upside down. What they didn't notice was that there was an unconscious lizard inside the top lid, having dropped itself in there by mistake and being drunk after partying with the Aflac duck all night, had passed out. The baker quickly plopped the lids onto the bases and cakes and, being distracted due to watching Food Network cake shows on the bakery TV and daydreaming of a better future in culinary arts, failed to notice the lizard.
The lizard wakes up, realizes it's on a cake that might end up on CakeWrecks since it kind of looks like a vampire sneezed on it, and dies of shame.
