What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Sweet Treats

I. LOVE. FOOD.

I especially love cake, cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, candy, or anything with copious amounts of
sugar
SUGAR
SUGAAAAR!!

I mean, it's really no secret. I eat sugary food, I write about sugary food, and I make sugary food while I eat sugary food and write about sugary food. So today, let's see some gorgeous cakes that give "eye-candy" a whole new meaning.

Made by Kim C.

Look at all those treats! Pie, ice cream, donuts, cupcakes, bon bons, cookies, and cake. It's so realistic, it's hard to believe it's all cake!

Here's an adorable topsy-turvy candy cake:

Submitted by Suzanne B. and made by Sweet Irene

But should a one-year old really be eating all that sugar? You better give it to me.

Adding some whimsy isn't a bad idea. Just look at these little cupcake houses!

Submitted by Heather M. and made by Rose Sen

"Home 'Sweet' Home," indeed. When can I move in?

Here's a delightful nod to the Candyland game without being too literal:

By Robyn Loves Cake

Another first-birthday cake? Yeah, I better eat this one, too. Just to be safe.

Sweet treats take an elegant turn in this impeccable teapot cake:

Submitted by Tracy Q. and made by Sugar Creations

I can't believe every inch of this is edible, including the gelatin butterfly! Gorgeous.

There are a latte cute details on this coffee cake:

By Sweet Bites Cakes

I'm not a coffee drinker, but that biscotti looks pretty good. Biscotti is like cake, right? Cake that's been left out for a few days? Yeah, I'd still eat it. Don't judge me.

I love these over-sized Hostess cakes!

Submitted by Julie H. and made by The People's Cake

Though I'm not sure the sign was necessary. Wouldn't I assume it was cake whether it was a cake version of the cake or just the cake itself? I guess it could have been a sculpture. (And now I desperately want this as a sculpture.)

Now this is a cupcake cake I can get behind:

Submitted by Marian and made by Andrea's SweetCakes

And by "get behind," I mean "stand behind and nonchalantly lick the frosting until someone notices."

Speaking of cakes I want to devour single-handedly...

via Williams Sonoma

Now, where can I find a glass of milk big enough to dunk it in?

This beautiful balancing act is a floral delight!

Submitted by Kristy L. and made by Calamity Cakes

I love that this cake represents Strawberry Shortcake while maintaining beauty and elegance. Perfect for any age!

Nothing says "sweethearts" quite like this candy heart engagement cake:

Made by Lisa B.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for THESE:

Submitted by Esther W. and made by Hello Naomi

I'm serious, if I don't eat an ice cream sundae today, I'm going to go bananas.

Made by Studio Cake.

Alright, I'm officially going to get ice cream now.

Before I go, this next cake is quite possibly my most favourite cake I've ever come across while writing for Cake Wrecks. Beautifully constructed, enormously entertaining, and perfect for any baby shower:

Submitted by Vanessa and made by John S.

Pickles and ice cream!! This cake cracks me up. I wonder what flavour it is!

(Now I'm going to get ice cream. Writing this post was like grocery shopping when you're hungry. Such a bad/good/bad idea.)

These don't look very wrecky to me. Is this Cakewrecks?

[Editor's note- As this is the third week in a row that someone has asked this exact question, I feel like I should answer it. Since the very beginning of this blog, we have featured the best cakes we can find on Sundays. It's called Sunday Sweets. We have done nearly 175 Sunday Sweets posts. Think of it as the Yin to the rest of the week's Yang. Welcome to Cake Wrecks, Guest! -john]

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterzak8011

They actually make pans for the Oreo-esque cake! I own them, and I have made chocolate cake with Oreo pieces mixed in. Quite delicious, not to mention fun-looking!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentere. grey

I just have to wonder who the parents are that order these for a one year old's birthday. They are amazing, but as someone who has ordered more than the typical "Publix" cake in the past, I just can't see ordering something this elaborate for a one year old. Oh well, each to their own. Keep up the great work Jen!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

You guys always have AMAZING Sunday Sweets. This week's is no exception to that statement. I love all the sweet treats cakes; all of them are so cute and look super duper delicious. I even starred this in Google Reader.

Maybe I should order one of these for my birthday next year. Now I really want ice cream...and it's only 10:30 in the morning here!!!

P.S.- On your next tour, you should definitely come to Albany, NY. Pleeeeeeeeasseeeeee?!?

great post, number1, and nice to see you again (which begs the question of when will we hear from you again, hmmmm? no songs in a while).

O.T.: anyone else coming to the Orlando book signing feel the need for a toga party? I haven't been to one in a good, long time and this seems to be an occasion that warrants festive attire. :D

Re:"CAKE" sign on the Hostess cakes -
There are people out there who would expect those cakes to be creme-filled all through just like the originals, and would pitch a fit after they cut into one to discover that it was really all cake with the end decorated to look like it had creme filling.
Of course, such people probably won't believe the "CAKE" sign, but at least the baker tried to warn them.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterC

That last cake really reminds me of the Fried Ham song....I don't remember all the words, but towards the end, there was a bit that went like this "and after the macaroni, we'll have PICKLES, ICE CREAM, and baloni, and more fried ham....fried ham fried ham fried ham!!!!!"

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDeirdre

I was so excited to see this post today, Jen! Not only because it has gorgeous cakes (and it does) but because a paper crafting design team I'm on used the cupcakes as an inspiration photo a couple o weeks back! I made one of them out of paper. Less fattening. : )

I blogged about it here: http://www.brandiwiggins.com/2011/09/stampin-royalty-89-milk-carton-cupcake.html

Have a great Sunday!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBrandi

I love this week's Sunday Sweets - but I'm all freaked out at the thought of what kind of parent spends that kind of money on such a cake for a one year old. Are these the people who get their one year old a pony as well? A French pony? That has been dyed purple? Perhaps I just need to eat some cake and stop fretting, yes?

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbigwhitegrannypanties

This is my favorite Sunday Sweets ever! They are all just so cute!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

I love the Sunday Sweets -- not only does it give my sides a little rest after laughing so hard all week, it's just nice to see some real decorating craftsmanship. These folks are artists. Oh, and can I get a plate of those cupcakes with the cherries and wafer pieces? Thanks.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermel

Um, if you are American, why did you spell favorite in the British way??? Love this site, love Sunday Sweets, love wrecked cakes! Y'all do a great job!

[Editor's note- Jen Dorsman, the writer of this post, is a rebel. Not only does she insert the occasion random and unnecessary U, sometimes, she even uses the word alright! She a wild woman. She can't be stopped. Watch out, Oxford comma! You're next on her hit list! -john]

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJ

I have eaten cake and pickles together. They actually taste good together, with the sweetness of the cake and the salty sour of the pickles balance nicely.

I do enjoy this web site, both on week days for the wrecks and Sundays for the Sweets.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnna A

Yay! These cakes were wonderful to see on my birthday! I'd really love to have that last one any day, though :D
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who craves pickles after consuming milk/products and visa versa LOL :9

I can't wait to see y'all in Fairview, Texas! :D

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEggie

The Hostess cakes and the 'sugar' theme and the eating stale cake thing make me think of Stephanie Plum. Have any of you read any of the Stephanie Plum novels by Janet Evanovich? HYSTERIAL and snarky and sarcastic and laugh out loud on the bus funny...kind of like Cake Wrecks :) I highly reccomemend them!

[Editor's note- I don't think Jen's read them but I've read every one of them. -john]

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

I bet the last cake was a baby shower cake for a woman who craved cake and pickles :)

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLydia

Ok...so at first I was like 'these cakes are cool' BUT then I got to the hostess cakes and now I need a new keyboard cause I am pretty sure my globs of drool just ruined mine......That strawberry shortcake cake is AMAZING! So awesome and Strawberry on the bottom just makes it so heartwarming!!!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Wow. Wow. Wow. These are just gorgeous.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJules

These are absolutely devine! Every one of these brings up a memory of a happy time. :) Now to address the pickles and cravings. Don't freak out people but my Mom would crave peanut butter, pickle and miracle whip sandwiches. And of course us children HAD to have what Mom was having so I will have one of these every few years or so. It totally hits the spot! Don't knock it till you try it! Make sure there is lots of each ingredient. No skimping. Now I date you to try one! :)

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBean

The pickles and ice cream cake just screams PREGNANCY to me. After all, isn't that what everyone says pregnant women eat. Or maybe that's just what I think since I'm almost 5 months pregnant. Haven't craved anything that weird yet though!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeth

Jen, I'm beginning to suspect that in one of your previous lives, there exists two missing German children and a gingerbread house.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCharly

Those are amazing! I love them!

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDonna

Dear Cakewrecks.com,

I don't remember how I found you, but I sure do love you! Thanks for making my days a bit brighter with a good laugh or a sunday I almost always "awwwwww" or sometimes "squeee!" over.

Yet more cakes that I shouldn't show my daughter, otherwise she will be begging me to be more creative for her next birthday. ;)

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin

When I read "sugar SUGAR SUGAAAAR" I immediately thought of Mac from Foster's on his sugar high. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKvvHZZSBYc) And ZOMG, this weeks' sweets are a-MA-zing! I can't even pick a fave, and I can usually narrow it down to a couple or three...

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterWendy

I am feeling sad seeing these first birthday cakes. So many baby's out there have more beautiful cakes than I a *mumble mumble* year old have ever gotten in my life!!! Can I get you to pull my husband aside when we come to the book tour and give him a few kind hints? Or at least a few bakery phone numbers?

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBeth S

The version of Fried Ham that I know is different:

Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and bologna, after the macaroni we'll have onions and pickles and peppers and then we'll have some more fried ham. FRIED HAM FRIED HAM!

Seems like my version needs a dessert of some kind... hmmm...

(Second verse, same as the first, opera singer sings it a little bit worse!)

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAnneke (Mudhooks)

We held big 1st birthday parties for both our daughters. It was a celebration more for the parents that they made through the 1st year with the kid still intact! Plus, it was a great way to show off the kid. John> I love that you have read Stephanie Plum, not Jen. I love you both (not in a weird way). See you in Boston!

@J:

I am American, but I continually spell veterinary terms in the British fashion because I read "All Things Great And Small", "All Things Bright And Beautiful", "All Things Wise And Wonderful", and "The Lord God Made Them All", when I was fairly young. If you are not familiar with that series of books, is written by James Herriot, a British vet, and he naturally spells words in the British style. Often it was the first time I was seeing them, and that's how I learned them, so I figured that was the correct way. Most of the time I still do it that way. It drove some of my veterinary instructors wild.

GORGEOUS post today. I love cake and I love cake in the shape of cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, etc even more. Only thing I'm not a fan of seeing was the "oreo" cake. Used to work at Williams-Sonoma. Its not a bakery but a high-end cooking/baking supply store, normally found in a mall. The cake shown was (like e.grey kinda referenced) is just made from pour the cake batter in two cookie designed cake pans, put together by just putting frosting on one of the cakes and topping it with the other cake. Not much skill...cool looking but nothing special skill wise compared to all the other amazing cakes. ANYWAYS, great post! Check this site *everyday* and love it. :)

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered Commentermichelej

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSallyD

I LOVE the cupcake ones this week! Thanks for sharing ^.^

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAndrea G.

These are awesome. If you like cakes like this, the big cake on teh cover of the wilton yearbook for 2012 is a confectioner's dream as well.

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterComputermama

I LOVE LOVE LOVE these cakes! The cupcake houses are my fav, but it's hard to choose with so much amazing yumminess! (My spell checker does not believe yumminess is a word. My spellchecker clearly has not seen these cakes.) ^-^

October 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterValkyrie Anne

Wow what gorgeous cakes! I love Sunday Sweets. It helps erase the past weeks wrecks and gets my mind nearly ready for the wrecks to come lol. And I too now want ice cream or at least a banana split!

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

i like all cakes, but the coffee cake is my favorite(I'm from the Netherlands)and I like this site

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjose

#1 Donuts. What more need be said.

#7 If only Ding-Dongs and Ho-Hos really were that size. And yes, I do expect them to be creme-filled, signs notwithstanding.

#9 An interesting re-think of the 'giant cookie' concept. I think this one is my favourite.

These cakes didn't seem especially wrecky -- perhaps tomorrow will be different. (Ducks and runs)

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I love how the creme on the Ding-Dong has some chocolate crumbs in it, just as it would if someone really bit into.

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I love Sunday Sweets... It's nice to see some of us still know what we are doing.

on a side note: a biscotti is a twice baked cookie... it's baked first as a loaf, then cut into the ever so convenient lil sticks and baked again.

October 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKrystal

Is the box with the conversation hearts also made of cake?
