What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Point of Reference

I'd like to take a moment to thank today's Wreckerators for including the inspirations for their Wrecks:

...just as soon as I stop laughing.

Sure. That's close enough.

At first glance, this actually isn't that bad.

Then again, I'm not wearing my glasses.
And I have all the lights out.
And I've been drinking.

But still.

This next one was submitted by the baker herself, so big squishy props to Crystal for being such a great sport:

After all, it's not everyone who will admit to confusing Ritz crackers with pancakes.

Great. Now I want pancakes. (JOHN! Grab your coat. It's 'Barrel time, baby.)

Oh, hang on; I have one more Wreck to show:

Well hellooooo, whiskers-scratched-on-with-a-spatula! Aren't you just the laziest, most ineffectual things ever! In fact, Miss Hello....[looking around at children]...uh...Crappy, I shall continue snorting derisively at your incompetent creation until I have sufficient pancakes to render myself comfortably comatose.

Oh, Joo-oohn!

B.D., Anony M., Emily D., Crystal P., & Laura M., I just realized the irony: a stack of crackers that looks like pancakes has inspired me to go to a pancake place name Cracker Barrel. It's like the circle of life. With carbs.

I like it.

I thought perhaps Hello Kitty had been in a, um, cat fight.

All CCC's should be required to come with reference material so we're not scratching our heads wondering, "What the heck is that suppose to be?"

I really like donating for the 12 days of Christmas. Today I donated on the Doctors Without Borders website because I feel like they get more of the donation that way. Please add 5 dollars on the First Giving total! :)

These are PROFESSIONAL cakes? Really? I could do better in my sleep!!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Congrats to Crystal for doing such a good job before she realized the color of Ritz crackers is so disgusting in icing. Make the most of a bad situation and send it to Cake Wrecks. Good job, girl.

As for the others ... smiley faces? Come on, you didn't even try.

Is it just me (and probably the fifty or so others who will/have already said this) But is the board on the hello kitty cake upside down?

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKelli

Those Ritz Crackers in a cake seem like guaranteed soggy to me.

And that's not cool.

Pancakes sound good though.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMary Connealy

Bahahaha! Your "circle of life" realization at the end has me grinning!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Ah, that "Drama Queen" cake. Too much!!

While the Faux-lo Kitty cake is a wreck, it is still cute (Which is totally possible, I know, I know!). But I think that's because of the diminutive button eyes and nose.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterania

crackers-->pancakes-->crackers-->pancakes. You are awesome, Jen! you made my day :-)

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterErin

Hello Kitty looks very subdued. The Ritz crackers are anything but.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterStella

Ah, the muses of comedy and tragedy so very poignantly rendered in a tragic fashion that is comedic. Kind of ironic, really.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterDanger Boy

Why would anyone want a cake to look like a stack of Ritz crackers anyway?

And now that you mentioned it, I wanna go to Cracker Barrel too...

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterA.J.

I think the 1st cake is obviously homage to the fabulous "road" movie, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert!

Oh, the circle of life. Makes me hungry.

wv - fatchasi: Who knew Comedy and Tragedy could be so fatchasi?!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Oh great...now I want Cracker Barrel!!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Ya gotta wonder how these wreckerators (the ones that use cupcakes for everything, at least) do on that test where you try to put various pegs in the corresponding holes. "You didn't give me enough round pegs for all these holes! Also, I need a hammer and some frosting."

#2 What is a 'Dromo Queen'?

#3 A low-res rendition of a key part of a low-res game system. Now if someone would kindly explain the fake ivy -- no, real ivy would not make more sense.

#4 Those are *so* pancakes, especially with whatever is going on at the base. Why? (I wonder if anyone has ever tried deliberately to make a cake that looks like a stack of pancakes. A redundant food cake -- this must be done.)

#5 Subject: ugh. Realization in cupcakes: UGH! The cake board says 'Happy Birthday Laimy' That's a pretty 'laimy' cake, alright.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

I made a Hello Kitty cake that was better than that. And I am no good at making cakes.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

@Kelli, it does appear that the 'finished' side of the cake board is down on the 'Hell-o Kitty' CCC (Spooy Patooie!). That makes it even more bogus.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

The Drama Queen cake made me laugh out loud..the irony inherent in this interpretation is beyond belief..

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commentermizdarlin

Am I the only one who finds the smiley face comedy/tragedy masks kind of adorable?

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

I really would like to know just how OLD that picture of the Nintendo cake is. I mean just LOOK at that controller! (I mean the real one.) Wow. Just wow.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKnit Wit

@Craig... yep! I've make "pancake" cakes twice now!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterWild Cakes

@ Craig: I was thinking Ace of Cakes had made pancakes and a French mouse, but I was mistaken. It was French toast instead. Close!

Hello Kitty....the cake board does appear to be upside down and Kitty seems to be suffering from Cat Scratch Fever. What? The decorators ran out of black icing after they outlined the head and gave it eyes, they had to carve whiskers instead?

I thought Kitty was sticking it's tongue out, but now I realize that's a candle.

Well, good luck one year old. I hope the rest of your birthday cakes get better...

The circle of life...with carbs. Seriously, Jen, you outdo yourself EVERY POST!!!!! Love it :)

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRachel O.

That Nintendo cake was my husband's groom's cake. Here is the story... We did not want the cake like that. We brought the lady the controller so she knew what it looked like. We wanted the whole cake to be the controller. She didnt get it and I guess she thought we wanted the controller on the cake. In answer to someone's question, the cake is from 2007. My husband is a gamer and our idea was great. She just didnt make it how we wanted. She came free with the place we got married, so who is to really complain?

Please make sure you do a couple of animal-oriented charities! They need our help too, and animals are often overlooked because they have no voice.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBridget

Wow, I missed the whole Hello Kitty boat...I thought it was a bunny, a sad excuse for a bunny, but a bunny none the less! And the comedy/tragedy faces? I think it would be impossible to put less effort into duplicating something! Props to the lady who turned herself in for her Wreck! Off to IHOP we go...stupid pancakes....

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTucsonBlonde

I LOVE that the baker sent it in!!! Yay for her (but I'm still not sending you my topsy turvy disaster)

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterT

As a Theatre Artiste (silly misspellings intended), I literally gasped at the Comedy/Tragedy masks. Gasped.
I love your site.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterrene'

Did the baker of the "cracker" cake happen to mention why someone would want a cake that looked like a stack of crackers?
And now I'm not going to be able to look at a Hello Kitty without thinking Hello...crappy!

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterBecs Attwood

Great post as usual. Great cause to donate to also. I love Cracker Barrel! We don't have one anywhere near us. Enjoy the pancakes for me also.-Brook

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterbrook

Ok, I admit it, the Drama Queen cake got a real life LOL from me. I LOVE that the wreckerator didn't even try. "Aw, f*** it. Happy face, sad face - done!" *Chuckle* :D

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGina

OMG what were they thinking

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Love your logic, but wouldn't a better place to go for pancakes be IHOP?

IHOP is also one of those things I do quickly to get away from disasters in icing.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow, the irony didn't hit me until you mentioned it. Plus we don't have Cracker Barrels here in good Ol WA so it didn't fully sink in. Neither did the Hello....Crappy until I thought about how Crappy would be inappropriate. Then I laughed and farted at the same time.

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMissNay

I can't help but wonder what occasion calls for a cake modeled after a stack of Ritz crackers???

December 14, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Maples

Bwahahahahaaa. Ohhh that last cake has me dying of laughter. It looks like Hello Kitty met her friend Mr. Bill and got crushed as flat as a.. well a pancake lol. Now I want those too dang..

December 15, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

To be fair, if you look from the ritz crackers to the cake and back, they do look very much the same. And they also look like pancakes. :) Mmmm, pancakes...

December 15, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

FWIW,

Doctors Without Borders is *awesome*. They go in to provide medical care where even the Red Cross is nervous about going.

Cathy said-
My 3 year old thinks that the first cake looks like a present with a flower on top sliding down a slide. And, to be fair, the birthday girl should get the piece with the flower...

When I first saw that Hello Kitty one, I only saw the top of it and thought it was a Snoopy cake!

I had to re-enter my info to donate again. am i missing something on the donation website that will somehow save my info so i don't have to enter it again every time? because i might as well just go to the homepage of the charity and save them the processing fee if i'm going to have to enter it again each time. just fyi cause i know you tried to make it easier this year:)

I thought the drama cake was cute too. And at least Hello Cakey has a mouth, unlike its inspiration.
