What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Sunday Sweets: Potter Mania

Whether you're seeing the movie this weekend or not, I think you'll agree that these Harry Potter cakes are sweet enough to rival anything in HoneyDuke's:

Made by Bakingdom

D'awww. Lookit the little broom! And Fawkes! And the itty-bitty potion bottles!!

Ahem.

Sorry.

Next check out this nifty design:

Submitted by Kristin A. & made by Cake Nouveau

I love the tie. And the snitch. And the turrets. And the...oh, you get the idea.

Here's an adorable cartoon-y version from all the way over in China:

Found at DIY Cakes in Beijing

Love it!

And this one is the spitting image of young Daniel Radcliffe:

This was the cake at a faaaabulous Potter-themed birthday party:

Submitted by Rory L., found here (click to see the adorable HP party pics!) & made by Shelby Lynn's Cake Shoppe

Check out the sculpted marzipan on this one:

So perfect!

And finally, I have a special affection for the Monster Book of Monsters:

Although really everything here is amazing. Just look at that wand! And the wings on the snitch! Even the little bag of coins is made of two cupcakes, wrapped in fondant. Wowza.

Have a Sweet to nominate? Then send it to Sunday Sweets [at] Cake Wrecks [dot] com.

I want a Harry Potter cake. Too bad I'm 25 years old.

On the second cake, the tower windows look like mouths, like they're going to break into song.

OH. MY. GOSH. I saw the bakingdom cake even before it was on sunday sweets! I love her blog, and you should totally check it out!

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

How do they get the snitches gold?!? These are so awesome! And it's really nice to see the book inspired artwork.

I love the monster book cake. :)

Saw the movie on Friday.....L O V E!

One thing that slightly bothered me was that Luna's dad should have been much older.

I'm glad I haven't read the book in a while or I'm sure that wouldn't be the only thing that would bother me.

Monster Book of Monsters FTW! Definitely my favorite.

Personally, I'd like to see a mandrake cake.

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered Commentertasteslikeyum

Love the castle towers. :)

Great looking HP cakes!

Thanks for sharing the cuteness =).

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Why aren't Harry's eyes green on either of those cakes???? Otherwise, they'd be gorgeous - but a blue-eyed Harry is all wrong!

I super heart the second one with the tie and the turrets...

I love the simplicity of some of these that shows the theme perfectly

The cakes look fantastic. I especially like the monster book!

When you hear one of your cakes is on cake wrecks the first thing you do is panic...
Sunday Sweets however is a whole different story!! Thanks for liking my Monster Book!! :)

And more HP-related cakes! :)

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKristen

I WANT A MONSTER BOOK OF MONSTER CAKE!!! Wow!! That is amazing!!

:) Mags

I have to agree with the other Joanna (great name, btw!) Why are Harry's eyes blue on these cakes? It is noted over and over again in the books that he has his mother's green eyes. Other than that, I LOVE these cakes, and I also loved the movie. We attended the midnight premiere Thursday night and it was totally worth only getting about 2 1/2 hours of sleep before I had to go to work Friday morning!

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJoAnna

I'm totally jealous of the Harry Potter birthday party!! And all the cakes are amazing!!

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTrish

Love, love, love these! Can't decide which one I like best: the one with Hogwarts with the shirt and tie base, or the Monster Book of Monsters. Oh, and the one with Fawkes is amazing...

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterVicki Price

4th cake: Harry's eyes are GREEN. Duh.

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterClara

Awesome! I'm much more than 25, but I'd take any of them for my birthday!

Boob Nazi -- go for it.

For those wondering about blue-eyed Harry, he's got blue eyes in the movies. (Which somehow doesn't bug me as much as the fact that his hair isn't nearly messy enough!)

WV: whinc. We geeks sometimes have to whinc at changes when our beloved books become movies (or cakes).

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterShanti

Beautiful cakes, but for a 3 year-old? 5 year-old?
"Here Honey, let Mommy tell you all about the rotting dead people coming out of the lake... now, go night-night."

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

And now for some serious Nerditude: On the first cake, I think the letters on the various potion bottles stand for "Felix Felicis" (liquid luck), "Amortentia" (love potion), and "Veritaserum" (truth juice)! Clearly the bakers are die-hard fans, too :D

November 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCNemes

To the 2 JoAnnas: Harry's eyes are probably blue on the cakes because Daniel Radcliffe has blue eyes. He couldn't tolerate the contacts, so Chris Colombus decided to just keep his blue eyes. In the movies, his eye color is never mentioned. All anyone says is that he has his mother's eyes. So, although not technically canon, it works if the actress playing Lily has blue eyes, too. The cake is probably modeled after the Harry in the movies, and thus has blue eyes.

It's a change that many fans have noticed (and many complained about), but I guess as long as the importance of Harry having Lily's eyes is kept, then the color green loses its importance.

Just my 2 cents.

Amazingly, the "portrait" cake in this post is baked in the same pan as the last one in Friday's "wrecks." What a difference the skill of the decorator makes! ;)

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

Though I will say, at least the "wreck" version got the green eyes right!

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterkayk

I guess it would help if I understood the world of Potter. The brown pointy thing to the left of the first cake looked rather poo-ish to me. I guess some things are wrecky only if taken out of context. I liked the cake though, even though I don't understand the red chicken. The rest are really nice too.

WV: fainsua
No snarky comment, I just think it has a cool, Shakespearean ring to it!

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterpikkewyntjie

I loved all of them and I have only seen three of the movies.. guess I really better pick up the pace lol.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

I can't wait for the Potter hype to die down >.<

HI

Great information in this post but there are many students likes these types of cakes.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterMaths private tutor

Why are there cakes for 3 and 5 year olds? Harry potter is not for these kids, Dora and Bob the builder are. Mind you they're awesome cakes and I'd want one I just don't know if 3 year olds get it... Unless of course the cakes are really for the parents to enjoy.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Wow, those are so awesome! I love HP and these cakes are great. The only thing that I have to complain about is that first one. The decorations are so great and so well-done, but... it's on a white cake with little flowers. It looks like they took a wedding cake and stuck some HP stuff on it as an afterthought, lol. But the others are so well-designed!

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

*sigh*

This makes me happy.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered Commenterintothethickofit

I love the inclusion of the Sorting Hat! I'd love a cake just of the Sorting Hat! Too bad I'm as old as dirt. Maybe when I'm as old as a stone someone will buy one for me.

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTom

Saw the movie last night, loved it!!!! I'm not sure I can wait the 8 months until the last part comes out!

But those cakes....wow.
I want a snitch like that....

November 22, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterColleen

Harry Potter is my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love these cakes and i want to eat them all, but then I'd be fat AND nerdy. Oh well, *sigh*
