What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

Two Thumbs Up!

Ah, it warms the very cockles of my heart to see Hollywood embracing the Wreckage.

For example, check out what showed up on this week's episode of Glee:

As I'm sure you've guessed, this was for the shop teacher who'd just returned to work after accidentally cutting off his thumbs. Naturally they served him a whole hand, too, which he then had to eat without the benefit of a fork:

It's enough to make me think we need a new spin-off: Awkward Cake Wreck Photos. Eh? Guys?

"Ok," you're thinking, "but that's just a TV show. No one would actually order..."

"Uh..."

"Ack!"

Yeeeah. You were saying?

Oh, and we can't forget this gem:

(Yes, it's a repeat; I just couldn't help myself.)

MV, Angela A., & Anony M., thanks for giving me a hand with this post; I think we nailed it.

ugh!

jen, did you see leno last night? (not that i watch!) dl hughgely had a bake sale to help california's budget deficit. he hired a bakery who baked a Wildfire cake, an earthquake cake, and cookie pops that looked like Angelina's children. Good stuff!

"Your day has arrived" is one of my all-time favorites so I loved seeing it as a repeat. These cakes are gross.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDeAnn

"Your Day Has Arrived" with a severed hand next to it. Lock yourself in the bathroom, call 911, and arm yourself. (Arm yourself, severed hand...heh heh, amputation humor....)

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShelly

Okay, I gotta get them out of my system:
"Gotta hand it to you!"
"Is this the dessert you get if you order a knuckle sandwich?"
"It's good to see that Thing finally got married."
"I love thumbing through the cake catalogues."
"I pinky swear, if you give me your digits, I'll take you to Palm Beach on our first date."

Okay, I'm done. It's all in good pun. (Oh no! I can't stop!)

As soon as I saw that cake on Glee, I thought of Cake Wrecks!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterA and M's Mom

Hmm, Awkward cake photos? How about "Cake-engrish" wishing you much "Happy-Marriage..." yeah, I'm just going to think that the dark chocolate videogame cake was made by a Japanese bakery who doesn't even know what the two english words mean... you know, as apposed to thinking it is a grooms cake or anything like that...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVeggieT

Sadly, that card cake might have been cute if those thumbs hadn't been put in there...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

I so thought of you during this week's Glee episode - happy to see it here!

And "your day has arrived" is creepy on so many levels...!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRagtop Day

I watched the episode of Glee and told my husband "that cake should be on Cake Wrecks." Lo, and behold, here it is! Thanks for sharing the sugar disasters.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMrs. Foodie

I saw Glee and thought Wrectastic! Then when I explained why I was laughing I toldmy hubby about the totally Cake Wreck worthy cake. So glad to see it here and so impressed that you have set a standard for us all.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMel

Severed digits....mmm. And...gross!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHalf Assed Kitchen

The "your day has arrived" cake is still my all-time favorite. Can you imagine the happy couple saying, "Hey, don't you threaten us!!!"

It must be disembodied hand day in the blogosphere, because look what they have over at http://lovelylisting.com/2009/09/oh-hai-there.html" rel="nofollow">"Lovely Listing!"

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterNaomi Zikmund-Fisher

I just about died when I saw that cake on Glee the other night! I loved it :o) So glad you included it on the blog...

And who can forget the teacher trying to eat the cake without any thumbs to hold the fork with? LOVE IT!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKatie

Besides the more sinister reading of the "Your Day Has Arrived" sentiment, I keep thinking of another subtext: "We're so relieved you finally got someone to propose to you!!!"

Kinda turns the engagement party into a victory dinner.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnnapolitan

that thumbs up cake is hideous but oh-so-funny.

the royal flush is actually v. pretty. too bad they felt the need to add those nasty thumbs.

thumbs down on the hand cake. whaaa?!?! why???

am quite disturbed by these cakes today.

crawling away to suck my thumb ...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTerry Lee

Are you sure that the 5th one down isn't a big toe instead of a thumb?

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

I thought of CakeWrecks when I was watching Glee! I'm glad you posted that! :)

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBecky

The last one reminds me of a Tom Lehrer song "I hold your hand in mine, dear!" Equally gross!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDrawn to Caricature

I totally thought of Cake Wrecks as I was watching Glee :D

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlyson

i love the look on the guys face in the second picture! and the guys behind him? priceless!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLucille Ball Jr.

i have to get a pun out of my system too...
"man, you really gave those cakes the finger!" ;)

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenter*~kristen~*

At first glance, I mistook the lone toe/thumb cake for something entirely different. I thought perhaps Lorena Bobbitt was celebrating, uh, something.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterThe Courteous Chihuahua

I could be wrong, but I don't see much happy in a marriage where obviously someone (being kind and not automatically assuming it'd be the guy) plays PSP so much that their spouse is forced to sever their thumbs!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLaurenH

The last one looks like a prop from the addams family: the bride of thing

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterkelly

mmm, thumbs

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterFluffy Cow

Congratulations on your warmed cockles!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPaul

At least the fingernails were clean, on all the cakes. That would of been way worse, to see grungy nails!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertims_mom

Okay, show of hands, people...

Who loves Glee?!?

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBuffy

How short are the fingers on the last cake? Nearly as disturbing as the fingers on the Holland Belly cake!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCaite

John Lloyd Young is my favorite.

And him eating that cake was fabulous.

He has pictures of "Tony's" that are thumbs.

But I would be offended if someone gave me a phalange cake after I had lost some...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKatherine

I was thinking "The Big Lebowski" inspired the possible big toe, but it lacks nail polish.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdeckardcanine

And lets not forget the foot Duff and the Charm City cakes team made for a pediatrist!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Taylor, you're too cuticle. Thanks for arming us with the wrist of these puns. Too humerus.

Karen, who gets the point.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Nothing says happiness like biting into a severed body part.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJust Me,Pilgrim

WHY WHY WHY???? Now I envision a cake with a finger picking a nostril to combine the two horrors!!!!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPetalsYoga

That last one puts one in mind of the Tom Lehrer song that starts out:

"I hold your hand in mine, dear;
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

My joy would be complete, dear,
If you were only here,
But still I keep your hand
As a precious souvenir."

Now, after all these years, I understand that the hand was cake!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermadrobins

Nothing like body parts as cake to make me loose my appetite! Yuk!

~Amy B

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAmy

The last cake reminds me of Dwight Schrute's birthday banner: "It is your birthday."
It is a statement of fact.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDootsie

Just FYI, but that part of Glee was one of the funniest things I've seen.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterErika

Icky !

Try to do anything without your thumbs and you realize how lucky you are to have them !

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLynn

HELP!!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterIndy

I was so happy to see it on GLEE!! I laughed and laughed...wonderful stuff. Can't wait until you get to Portland!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKC McAuley

Jen, I feel like it is not said enough, so I must say it for all of us:

Bravo on the puns! Really, though, there is not enough pun-related humor these days so thank you for keeping alive a dying art

I would give you two thumbs up, but, well, given the content of this post...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbrista

Glee cake is CLASSIC!! ha ha

Love it...

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCarrie

I thought of Wrecks the SECOND that cake came in the room. Way to change Hollywood!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteralainalh

That last cake "Your day has arrived" totally cracked me up... It's like it's missing text or something "Your day has arrived that we'll chop off your hand" would be more suitable. lol!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterLinds

I *TOTALLY* thought of your blog when I saw that cake on Glee! HA. Love it.

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterStephanie

Geesh they should of at least painted the last wrecks finger nails a pretty pink for her wedding!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Daphne

I'll give this post a few thumbs up. It shocks me what people want you to put on a cake. I don't think partial body parts belong on any kind of a cake that doesn't include a halloween theme. Oh wait I just did one this weekend with a dismembered foot in a grave. Guess I should keep my mouth shut.
I LOVE your site!

September 18, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterHeidi

Excellent timing. I was just making my son's birthday cake this morning. He asked for a dinosaur so I made a 3-D one, definitely not wrecky ;-) As I was piping the nails on to the feet I thought to myself "I don't think I've ever put toenails on a cake before."
