What's a Wreck?

A Cake Wreck is any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate - you name it. A Wreck is not necessarily a poorly-made cake; it's simply one I find funny, for any of a number of reasons. Anyone who has ever smeared frosting on a baked good has made a Wreck at one time or another, so I'm not here to vilify decorators: Cake Wrecks is just about finding the funny in unexpected, sugar-filled places.

Now, don't you have a photo you want to send me? ;)

What The Frosting?

No, no, don't tell me, bakers.

Lemme see if I can guess:

Suffocating snowman?

Two-tentacled jellyfish?

Twin highways beside a poppy field?

Dancing lampshade?

Worm wearing a turtle shell?
(Hero in a half shell: EARTHWORM POWER.)

Running Cupcake Man?

Oh! Or McDonald's Fry Guy?

Elmo in a teal turtleneck doing the hula dance with his mouth wide open?

(Admit it: you see it, too.)

**SIGH**

Look, bakers, I don't...

I mean, I just can't...

[blinking]

Er...

That's it.

I GIVE UP.

Hat tip to Erica, Hollie, Julie B., Emily G., Daemon S., Kerensa J., Rhonda M., & Jullian G., who says she can't wait to scarf one of these down. Heh.

[eyes widening]

Hey, waaaaait a minute...

I can accept that they're hat and scarf combos, but why all the same color? Presumably they were done by different bakers in different places?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterwordphreak

Finally got it on the last cake. But the scarf still looks like those strange socks with toes!

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermamabear

Who decides this should be a thing, a thing people might buy? Is there a celebration that features super worm in a turtle shell -- actually I might celebrate that since I have a turtle and he eats worms but SERIOUSLY who buys a cake to celebrate hats and scarves that look like two tentacled jelly fish? And why are there dots on the hat? Is the message in the dots? Because the snowflakes have dots too.

The only logical answer is that secret messages are being sent out in cakes no sane person would ever buy.

"Jeans and a hat? It's jeans and a hat!!!"
*a few cakes later*
"IT'S A HAT AND A SCARF!!!! RIGHT THERE!!!!"

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenter-Unknown-

Scarf and hat. Throw in boots for good measure. This is how it's done. <nods>
http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/66679

My guess is that...you know how if you wear glasses and you come in from the cold and your glasses steam up so you can't see anything? Yeah. That's my guess....either that the baker did, or they were hoping that the shoppers who looked at these monstrosities had just done so.

Kudos Midnight Writer on both songs!

I'm STILL shaking my head over the fact that several of you figured out what these were supposed to be. I was truly baffled and NEVER would have guessed hat and scarf! And snowflake runes. I'm also down with all of you who wondered if there is some sort of nationwide "crappy design" memo that got sent out to all these bakers. Yet another bad result of the recent polar vortex!

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJodi

I think maybe they are supposed to be a knit hat and scarf...

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersteve

Tis the season for scarf cakes. I guess even creatures on cakes get cold during the winter.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBarbara

Those are supposed to he hats and scarves? REALLY?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMOIST MAID CAKES

I think it is supposed to be a Cuban flag.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterConnie S.

That's not how I remember Rashamon at all!

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterVelvetKnight

Good grief, you mean you didn't recognize that kid from the Fat Albert cartoon show who wears the red sweater cap pulled down over his face? How could you not have?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSarah B.

I haven't commented in a LONG time, but this one....I really and truly didn't get it until your comment at the end. =) Thanks for the laugh today. I REALLY needed it.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMichelle

@The Midnight Writer ~ I'm out of superlatives so you get this one. You are supercalifragalistic :-)

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJodee

What is the most horrible part of this is that cap and scarf are a designated design by the Meijer corporate chain in their bakery. (and it actually looks like that!!!) I always had to edit all my display designs whenever I decorated just so that I didn't have to put out scary looking pieces like that! (Then I'd get in trouble and have to have them re-made to look like crap...) :P

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

Well, I tried. I googled it every way you can think of. Red hat blue scarf cakes, winter outerwear cakes, 2014 winter olympic cakes, winter cakes, deco pac winter cakes, winter cake designs, knitted cake designs etc etc ad infinem or something like that. Not a hit. Not a single, solitary hint anywhere of anything similar. I am mystified.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterjiffer

What is it?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMitch

Oh my goodness. I, too, am seriously going bonkers at not knowing about the snowflake code! What does it all MEAN????!!!!

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMoonflwr912

it's a snowman that's melted....???

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenteririshgirl

You keep making these hat and scarf cakes. I do not think you're making what you think you're making.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

So I too was of the ummmmm WTF is that until the end but the answers I sought were only partially given. FIne supposedly it is a hat and scarf although it looks like a mutant jellyfish on acid. I will buy that but then the question becomes why?
And rather than hurt myself I jumped on my trusty steed known as Google to find the answer I was missing...
But nooooooo
As I was riding towards the answer Google took a tumble into a random pothole and broke his leg. I had no choice. Modern medicine clearly has not come far enough to save poor Google and so I shot him as per drs orders. I feel bad about this but worse about the fact that Google failed me and I have NO FREAKING CLUE WHAT THE "THING" IS THAT PROMPTED ALL OF THIS.

I have failed you all for this I am sorry.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterWreckedNCakefused

Jellyfish maybe?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSara M

My 6 year old says "walking mushroom"?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKim

I realized they were hats and scarves on the first cake. Bear in mind that I DO knit, and quite well I might add. In the early days I produced a few hats that looked like those so inside information to the rescue.

How can this be a thing though? Hat and scarf cakes????? No.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGinger

Are these all from some national chain bakery/grocery store? That's the only reason I can think of for them all looking roughly the same.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrista

My 12 year old (whom I thought knew everything cause hes the all knowing pre teen ya know *sigh*) said he has no idea but maybe a Elmo squid.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentersara

"I think whoever made these cakes should give up and take up dog grooming."

But imagine what the poor dogs would look like! You'd give the groomer a picture of what the dog should look like, and come back to find the picture painted onto its shaven flank.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAviatrix

Clearly, the first one is a large headed, small torso'd, blob-faced angry being wearing wide-wale blue corduroy pants After that is anyone's guess...

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChristina

I don't think these are professional "cakes". I think this is a test to see if they can follow written directions without actually knowing what they were trying to create. That is the only explanation for the bizarre snowflakes that look so similar ... and don't look like snowflakes.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTricia L

I was beginning to wonder how I had missed hearing about the Flying Spaghetti Monster Holiday Movie.

@SuBee: Well writ, m’lady! The cake’s the thing from whence good humour doth take wing….

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermel

I believe it is supposed to be one of those "trendy" knit hats with the long ear-warmer/scarf additions. They usually have the shape of an animal head....

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commentereww

I go away for a while and come back... this is what happens. Someone out there knows what this is supposed to be. Unfortunately (or not), they aren't saying. My vote is a whole new dimension to "Where's Waldo."

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Okay, people, I saw one exactly like these at Meijer last night. Same colors. Same white flakes. Same wreck. I almost took a photo to submit to CakeWrecks...what is it? What the heck is it??? Whaaaaaaaat ?

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKitKat

Y'all, I read through ALL 83 COMMENTS. Every word. Of all 83. Comments. Just to be sure that was clear.

And NOBODY knows why all of the demented hats and scarves have the same color scheme with the snowflakes. PEOPLE I DON'T EVEN THERE MUST BE AN EXPLANATION.

(sorry about all the yelling)

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnise

Why? This can't be a meme or I would have wrangled it out of my daughter by now. (I ask her about all the new 'things'. She is patient.) Is it from Love Story? Jen, I love your comments. Everyone else, I love your comments, too.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterelmosmom1994

I'm with the conspiratorialist at the top of the posts. The white dots, the blue scarf, always the red hat, the ecclesiastical looking snowflake. I'm guessing it has to do with the illuminati.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCorrin

Hats off to you for trying to figure these mysterious cakes out. I give up, but I'd scarf them down, anyway.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

Mr. Haiku said "It's a UFO shooting blue I-don't-know."

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHaiku Joy

I thought it was a hat and scarf pretty early on, maybe because I am a knitter. What I don't get is why anyone would want that on a cake, and so many of them!

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAnita

@Jodi: thank you, thank you....
@Jodee: awww...thanks....I feel as lucky as a chimney sweep...(chim chim cheree....)

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterThe Midnight Writer

:( I posted a while ago, they're all designated by Meijer corporate and sent out in handouts to the decorators and required on the cakes during the winter season. They're awful.

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

Thoughout that entire thing I was just thinking how high were they when they decided to make two stemmed mushrooms. i did not see hat scarf till the very end

January 16, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterCGirl

OK. How many of you Googled "red hat blue scarf"???? WHAT is it? The inconsistent consistency blows my mind!

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTechgator

A variation of "The Pale Green Pants With Nobody Inside Them" by Dr. Seuss

Well…I was walking in the night
And I saw nothing scary.
For I have never been afraid
Of anything. Not very.
Then I was deep within the bakery
When, suddenly, I spied them.
I saw a red hat and blue scarf
With nobody inside them!
I wasn’t scared. But, yet, I stopped
What could those clothes be there for?
What could a hat and scarf on cake
Be floating in the air for?

@ Tricia L, I totally agree with your theory!

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSandy

Maybe it's Mr. Bill run over by a steam roller while wearing a hat and scarf? Lol I really don't understand if that's supposed to look like a hat and scarf why wreckerators have no clue what they look like.

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterArlene

Is it something religious? A heart and ribbon? Is it even a U.S. cake theme? Seriously? The first two have what look like religious symbols in each corner. I know its winter, but I don't think that it is meant to be snowflakes or scarves. I love all the funny guesses, but my OCD won't quit until l know.

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKayMee

Winter hat and scarf. The last one at least sort of look liked it. The rest looked like some sort of play dough fail..

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterweatherlover1

Muwahahaha! You silly mortals think this is merely a scarf and hat set. What you really see is the great demon Cthulu in his winter outfit, the Santanomicon! May the great Cthulu descend upon bad bakers everywhere and spread his wrath like funky chartreuse frosting!

January 17, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterArchpriestess

I think it is like Sips n Splatters (the trendy new painting while drinking parties) only but for cakes. Everyone chooses a canvas (CCC or cake), then they start drinking heavily, then they begin to "paint" or decorate based on the same template. All finished items come out looking similar, but not quite the same.

That's my two cents anyway. :-)
